Not bad. App led elevators, app for status, Automated health check for food delivery....all these looks like technology led changes that were done quickly.

See how government is using social media app like WeChat...they completely control it. Seamless government and corporate linkage where government can force their writ corporate. In US this would be like US government forcing everything through FB.

It illustrates the need for better digitization of services, and why the protestations of 'privacy enthusiasts', anarchists, and the hizzoners who give them legal cover regarding aadhar and other such services need to be crushed in a swift and brutal manner.

Also, as Suryag saar pointed out, this is a PR piece by a wannabe tencenter, so while it might be true in some pockets don't for a moment assume that they have pulled this off across the board. Good points to learn from, but nothing to be in awe of.

Totally agree on this point. Except for a few companies and startups (including IIT-D based startup, DRDO labs etc) we don't really have the infrastructure and raw materials to massively scale up N95 mask manufacturing, but what should be done is deploy our considerable garment manufacturing resources round the clock to make basic 4-layer cloth masks that are sturdy and cheap, and supply each person with a stock of at least 2. People must not be allowed out of their homes without a mask. This by itself is equivalent to social distancing in many ways, probably at a much lower cost.

Thats a good idea. Actually we do have significant capability for N95. The issue is lockdown and worker avaiability plus N99 which was at 10k/day to be taken to 20k+.

N95/PPE are in full swing. We are at 40% PPE availability if some sources are correct. Huge improvement in a months time. As things really started coming online in March first week.

Technology shared with two industry partners will ensure that 15-20,000 suits are now being produced every week, with the first batch expected to be delivered shortly. Similarly, the high demand five layered N 99 face masks designed by the Gwalior-based Defence Research and Development Establishment are already under production, with an expected rate of 200,000 masks a week.

The government is contemplating a partial lifting of the current lockdown on April 15 and imposing another one a month later

The government is contemplating a second lockdown across the nation after May 15 after the current one ends on April 14. This was one of the points discussed at a crucial 16-member Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting in April 3 chaired by Union defence minister Rajnath Singh and including Union home minister Amit Shah. A second lockdown is planned to break the chain of infections--the government believes it has only around 40 per cent of the critical care equipment needed to meet the pandemic. It hopes to delay the onset of the disease until the healthcare infrastructure can handle the surge in cases.

The Union government is likely to announce a conditional lifting of restrictions on April 15. Delivery of essential services will continue but the nationwide ban on public congregations will remain; cinema halls, food courts, restaurants and religious places too might stay shut. Malls will be open but only for selling essentials. Airline travel might resume, but visits to and from foreign countries will be permitted only under special circumstances. There will be special advisories to avoid inter-state travel. The ban on weekly markets will apply only to areas most affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

None of these decisions has been taken yet, but these discussions at the GoM point to the way the government’s thinking. It is clear that the government, at the moment, does not have sufficient evidence to confidently claim life will return to normal from April 15. The duration of the May 15 lockdown will be decided based on the number of infections the spread of the disease by then.

Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, is planning to lift the lockdown in stages. The Yogi Adityanath government is considering relaxing the lockdown with restrictions in districts where no Covid-19-positive case has been reported. These relaxations will gradually be extended to other districts at a later date.

Conducting a video conference with his ministers from his residence on April 5, Chief Minister Yogi sought suggestions from MPs and ministers to formulate a post-lockdown strategy. He feared crowds spilling out into the streets after the lockdown, defeating the purpose of preventing the spread of the infection. He said the government would take a decision on relaxations in the first phase as well as the organisations and institutions to be given exemption only after receiving the suggestions of public representatives. The CM said his government will continue to be alert on the situation and keep a constant tab on the situation. Making the public aware about social distancing and implementing it in public places would remain the first priority of his government, he added.

Posters need to read up on icmr testing guidelines before assuming anything.

All contact traced people are put in quarantines but ONLY those that are symptomatic will get tested. So in TJ case, while 20000 were put in quarantine based on contact tracing and checked for symptoms for s 14 day isolation period, only those who attended and those who developed symptoms are getting tested. That is few thousand at the max.

^^ Cant see anything as shocking anymore once the name Jamat turns up.
Not one among my "educated/liberal" IMs in my contact list has once said anything abt the Jamat antics or the mob videos attacking doctors though few are quick to jump into defending them and showing how the Jamat are "misunderstood"

All of them will of course be the first to jump and put into a snide 1-liner/like when any of my "liberal" contacts will post the usual spiel on big bad Modi or evil Hindu nationalist etc

Its amazing that we are even operating as a nation with 50-100 million such folks all over ( am assuming 25-30% of all IM folk fall into the no-hope category and 50% are in the silent acceptance category)

Left Bangalore last night and just landed in Shanghai today afternoon. I am surprised by how Pudong Airport and this metro city has been running, under the #COVIDー19 challenge. Here are some of my observations:
I was told to get SuiShenCode, a color card showing my health status, in Alipay APP. Green means healthy.
The card is actually a health proof used by everyone in Shanghai. All restaurants and hotels asked me to show it before allowing me in.
A big data product made by Gov. Location tracing by telecom carriers. Moved to a new hotel today. A new step at check-in was providing my travel history. Scaned QR code using WeChat, clicked 'Yes' to allow carrier search my location data, and it showed which countries/cities I had been in past 14 days.
The doctor in video above shows the SuiShenCode App that the CCP has deployed for contact tracing and public health. I think the China probably locks the SuiShenCode app to the user via facial recognition. India should also mandate the installation of such an app (a Digilocker) with a public health function. How the SuiShenCode works is explained below

China’s domestic tourism picks up during the Qingming Festival

Multiple tourist attractions in China welcomed massive crowds during the three-day Qingming Festival holiday which began on Saturday as the tourism industry picked up. However, experts warned there is a possibility of coronavirus transmission and called for stronger regulation of scenic spots.

Huangshan Mountain, a 5-A tourist attraction in Eastern China's Anhui Province received a huge flow of tourists on Sunday after it exempted its 190 yuan ($26.7) entrance fee to residents of the province to promote tourism.

The mass influx forced the scenic area to issue three notices to advise tourists to change their travel

I think the Chinese already knew about this. We saw quite a few videos of pigs being culled in China during the spread.

As usual, they hid the fact.

If this spread in to the meat chain... we are in big trouble.

Coronavirus: India enforces an absolute ban on the export of hydroxychloroquine, several nations send requests for supply as global demand rises

Coronavirus: India enforces an absolute ban on the export of hydroxychloroquine, several nations send requests for supply as global demand rises

Many nations, including SAARC countries, Indonesia, UAE and USA have requested India to lift the ban on the export of hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malaria drug showing promises in the treatment of COVID-19 positive patients.

6 April, 2020
OpIndia Staff

India enforced absolute ban on export of hydroxychloroquine

The government of India had banned the export of hydroxychloroquine back on 25 March as the global demand for the anti-malaria drug surged. Many nations have reported that the anti-malaria drug is showing promises in the treatment of coronavirus infected patients.

After US President Donald Trump advocated for the drug, the global demand had surged. However, Indian doctors have already been using the drug to treat coronavirus infections and the ICMR had recommended the use of hydroxy-chloroquine for high-risk cases, as a preventive measure against COVID-19.

The commerce ministry notification on 25 March had banned the export of the drug except on humanitarian grounds on a case to case basis if approved by the Ministry of External Affairs. The notification, however, stated that exports from SEZ/EOU units may be allowed to fulfil export obligations and in cases where an advance export license has been issued before the notification.

US President Donald Trump had yesterday stated in his White House address that he had requested PM Modi to allow the export of a specific order of hydroxychloroquine tablets.

Soon after the 25 March notification by the Commerce Ministry, the SAARC nations, UAE and Indonesia had requested the Indian government to lift the ban on the export of the drug. Many nations around the world are facing an acute shortage of drugs as the world grapples with the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic.

As per reports, apart from SAARC nations, Indonesia UAE and USA, many Latin American and European nations have also requested India to lift the export ban and allow the export of the drug to their respective countries. As many as 30 nations have reportedly requested India to lift the export ban on the drug.

As per a report on the Economic Times, on 27 March, the Department of Pharmaceuticals had asked India’s drug prices regulator to examine if India has enough stocks to fulfil domestic demand as meet export demand as well.

The SAARC nations had reportedly also requested for paracetamol, vitamins, certain hormones and medical equipment.

However, after due consideration, the Ministry of Commerce had on 4 April notified that the ban on the export of hydroxychloroquine will now be absolute and will not be allowed under any circumstances until further notification.

The new notification reads: “The export of hydroxychloroquine, and formulations made from hydroxychloroquine falling under any ITCHS code, including the ITCHS codes mentioned in the notification number 54 dated 25 March 2020, is no longer allowed SEZs/EOUs or any Advanced Authorisation or under the para 1.05(b) of Foreign Trade Policy 2015-20 or against full advanced payment as specified under para 2 of the notification. The export of hydroxychloroquine, and formulations made from hydroxychloroquine, therefore, shall remain prohibited, without any exception.

It is notable here that India is the largest producer of hydroxychloroquine and its formulations in the world. As the global demand surges, the international pressure on India to lift export ban can be expected to increase. But India’s huge population and the rapidly increasing COVID-19 positive cases in India may prevent India from allowing export under current circumstances

Here's the funny thing: The positive result percentages are remaining more or less constant the world over. And we have governments fudging the death counts by counting deaths with Chinese flu and deaths by Chinese flu together.

Excluding TJ, the positive tests - even among likely carriers is just 2.5% (TJ attendees are under 5% positive).

I don't know why govt cannot bring in a law (under emergency measures if needed) putting severe criminal penalties for not self-declaring or hiding stuff like Jamaat contact. I think the only govt being sufficiently proactive on this is Yogiji's govt, the rest are operating in their own politically correct bubble.

And of course, the Jamaat folks aren't the only ones doing that, though they are the most glaring example. Before them, dozens of yuppie types did the same.

Ultimately lockdown has to be lifted.. This disease is here to stay no matter what we do.. Ultimately world will develop herd immunity against it and this pandemic disease will be converted into endemic disease.. We just need to identify ways of keeping high risk groups away from harms way as long as possible.. This will ensure our hospitals are able to handle the burden..
Some form of staggered exit from lockdown will be needed..
We have too many patients who have no regard to safety of society.. People tend to hide information.. Corona infection has become some form of taboo and nobody wants to be associated with this "stigma".. Today morning I saw a pt who came with loose motions.. he denied any history of suspected covid contact, denied history of fever and sore throat.. His routine chest Xray showed big patch of opacity in right lung.. after too much pressure he admitted that he was having history of fever and throat pain.. he also came in contact with some foreign tourists before lockdown.. He may or may not have covid 19 but the way he was hiding information is worrisome..
The way govt is doing door to door surveys and aggressive contact tracing of suspects is commendable.. We are lucky to have strong leadership at center..

What is so far-fetched about that? We need to think out of the box. A smartphone is a basic necessity right now, not just a fancy gadget for yuppies. Hope you saw the pictures of people in huts or homeless ragpickers lighting candles and clapping to support Modiji's solidarity call. Why should they be left out of access to digitized services? I would be glad for our taxpayer income to subsidize low-cost smartphones for the poor.

After Tableeghi Jamaat, Mamta could be the next massive risk to COVID containment in India. With massive population with significant radicalized pockets and jungle raj in a lot of places, this may be a nightmare unfolding for the country in the coming days.

The TJ attendees have a much higher positive rate. There were about 8000 attendees according to reports. There have already been more than 1000 cases from them if the numbers from the last few days are anything to go by.

Not sure if this makes sense but there is a video from an ER doc at Maimonides in Brooklyn claiming we've all got it wrong and that the virus does not cause ARDS but a form of hypoxia similar to HAPE and that PPV is in fact more harmful.

There is a paper out from China suggesting viral proteins binding with heme and porphyrin disabling its O2 carrying capacity and how Chloriquine and favipiravir may be helpful in this situation.

COVID-19: Attacks the 1-Beta Chain of Hemoglobin and Captures the Porphyrin to Inhibit Human Heme Metabolism

Any intensivists here with thoughts on this? Dr. Ratnadip?

Outsourced supplies of PPEs begin landing in India
Posted On: 06 APR 2020 6:08PM by PIB Delhi
Supply lines from abroad opened up today with the receipt of 1.70 lakh Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) coveralls from China which have been donated to the Government of India. Along with domestic supplies of 20,000 coveralls, a total of 1.90 lakh coveralls will now be distributed to hospitals and will add to the 3,87,473 PPEs already available in the country as of now. A total of 2.94 lakh PPE coveralls have been arranged and supplied by Government of India now.

In addition to this, 2 lakh domestically produced N95 masks are also being sent to various hospitals. Including these, over 20 lakh N95 masks have been supplied by Government of India. About 16 lakh N95 masks are presently available in the country, and this figure will increase with the fresh supply of 2 lakh masks.

Major portions of the fresh supplies are being sent to States with comparatively higher number of cases such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan. Supplies are also being sent to central institutions like AIIMS, Safdarjung and RML hospitals, RIMS, NEIGRIHMS, BHU and AMU.

The commencement of foreign supplies marks a major milestone in our efforts to procure personal protection equipment for the battle against COVID-19. An order for 80 lakh complete PPE kits (including N95 masks) had been placed on a Singapore based platform earlier and now it has been indicated that supplies will commence from 11th April, 2020 with 2 lakh, followed by 8 lakh more in a week. Negotiations are in final stages with a Chinese platform for placing an order of 60 lakh complete PPE kits, which will also include N95 masks. Separate orders for N95 masks and protective goggles are also being placed on some foreign companies.

Giving a further fillip to domestic capabilities, Northern Railways have developed a PPE coverall. This is in addition to the PPE coveralls and N99 masks developed by DRDO earlier. Efforts are now being made to start mass production of these products. Existing N95 mask producers have increased their capacity to about 80,000 masks per day.

Orders have been placed for 112.76 lakhs stand alone N95 masks and 157.32 lakhs PPE coveralls. Out of these, 80 lakh PPE kits will include N95 masks. The objective is to achieve a supply of about 10 lakh PPE kits per week. Looking at the number of patients in the country, sufficient quantities are available for the moment. Further supplies are expected within this week.

TN's Health Secy. gave her usual stats just now. They have a subtle variation to refer to TJ group. Now, they say 'from the same source' and one has to infer TJ. This is apparently not to stigmatize anyone. Out of 50 cases tested +ve today, 48 are from the 'same source'

But is this disease deserving of the heroics?

This is EU mortality data.

http://www.euromomo.eu/index.html

Look at the first time series graph named Pooled number of deaths on the page (below the heat map of deaths by country.) There were bad flu seasons in 2017, 2018 and 2019. It’s more or less average continent wide in Europe in 2020 (A little spike, but not as bad as 2017 and 2018 where there were tens of thousands of excess deaths per week.

So, why all the panic when the deaths aren’t a bare blip when compared to 2017 and 2018 flu seasons?

What does he say? Stop the lockdowns and let the population acquire herd immunity as that is the only way to stop it.

Which to me indicates we are way overreacting. Certainly the mortality monitor data from EU indicates there’re other concerns than public health afoot.

Excluding TJ, the positive tests - even among likely carriers is just 2.5% (TJ attendees are under 5% positive).

Did you see the above? Some of the points they make seem silly, but many others are pretty thought-provoking. They show the mortality data for Switzerland and an affected northern Italian town, no higher than average in both cases. The fraction of positives for the flu as the flu season evolves is also shown. For the flu, testing initially reveals low positive fraction (~20%) at the beginning of the season for symptomatic individuals, then that goes up to 80% at the peak. For COVID, the +ve fraction hasn't budged from a narrow band of 10% to 20% worldwide. For the USA, it is around 20% to 25% (currently <20%). I initially got scared when I saw the exponential rise of number of cases in the USA. Then I found a site showing number of tests performed by day. Same exponential rise, and relatively flat +ve fraction.

This is a strange pandemic, either nothing much is going on after an initial infection, or the timescale is greatly stretched over years instead of months with the flu. The situation isn't helped by the fact that any death with a +ve test for Coronavirus, is automatically labeled as "Coronavirus death." The site mentions several instances of that as well.

Maintaining its record of innovative new technologies to combat coronavirus, the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) unveiled a full-body disinfection chamber and a full face mask for medical staff

https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Hy ... 261371.ece

The Centre for Fire Explosive & Environment Safety (CFEES), Delhi, developed two configurations of sanitising equipment which are spin-offs from technologies developed for fire suppression applications. First is a portable sanitisation equipment for spraying decontamination solution consisting of 1% Hypochlorite (HYPO) solution for sanitisation of suspected area.

The backpack generates very fine mist and is capable of disinfecting an area up to 300 metres whereas the trolley mounted large area sanitisation equipment can spray the disinfectant liquid up to 3,000 metres.

chandrasekaran wrote:Haven't you guys read about Arogya Setu ? Official app from GOI, available both on Android and IOS. Give it a try.
I have installed it and trying it out

Usage
0) took my phone number, name, gender, age, a questionaire on my current symptoms and travel history
1) it turns on my GPS and bluetooth which is a battery drain but not an issue I feel. No idea why blue tooth turning on is required.
2) No QR code, the App is not locked to user identity (no aadhar integration, or facial recognition) Self reporting
3) Can only be used on smart phone (probably 30% of India population probably has smart phones)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... enetration
4) No explanation of how the data being collected will be used.
5) Does not have a feature to Geo locate areas (workplace, home, markets, recreation areas etc) that we want to visit and get safety information of that area
6) Does not seem to be as sophisticated as the SuiShenCode (given that China scans SuiShenCode app at every entry, which seems to give some Shawkinah). Apart from saying that I am safe, it does not give any other information. Does not give any heat maps of suspected cases
7) It also does not seem to have a method to gather data from public. For example I would use such an App to report potential COVID cases that we may hear from via grapevine around us... if many people report such cases then it could help authority to send investigation team and better prepare quarantine zones. Sounds pretty STASI like but I am putting in out there in case GOI is listening
