now, suddenly some stoooopid committees are being formed and an ill considered course of action is being sought to be engineered by people who bear no responsibility for the coming violence by repeatedly stating that protests is a fundamental right.
You have summed up the "pratyaksha" (empirical) facts nicely, but Modi et al are aware of the greater "paroksha" picture and will act accordingly.

Trump and the Failure of the Expert Class
The fascism charge was only the most acute form of the claim that Mr. Trump was carrying out an “assault on democracy.” Some semantic clarification is in order here. When intellectuals and journalists of the left use the word “democracy,” they typically are not referring to elections and decision-making by popularly elected officials. For the left, “democracy” is another word for progressive policy aims, especially the widening of special political rights and welfare-state provisions to new constituencies. By that definition any Republican president is carrying out an “assault on democracy.”

The punjab "farmers" certainly do not want this happening in punjab.

But the center can and will tighten things up through the FCI including getting the procurement details and source of the grains thus shutting down non punjab produce from surreptitiously entering the panjab mandis.

Yogi's actions in UP are the first warning shots across the punjab "farmers" bows

How This Uttar Pradesh Minister Is Keeping A Check On Discrepancies In Paddy Procurement In Purvanchal

Image
Ranvendra Pratap Singh, UP Food and Civil Supplies Minister.

Snapshot
Singh said that CM Adityanath had issued directions to keep an eye on the paddy procurement process in the state.

This resulted in pushing nodal officers into monitoring middlemen and making the paddy procurement centres free from them.

Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Ranvendra Pratap Singh has said that the state is witnessing a strong crackdown on people involved in discrepancies in paddy procurement.

Singh spoke to Swarajya over the phone. He has said that the crackdown has been possible owing to the directions from UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath against corrupt practices.

He said, "The series of actions on people involved in discrepancies is huge — the biggest since Independence..."

Singh said that Adityanath had issued directions to keep an eye on the paddy procurement process in the state. The resulting action included pushing nodal officers into action for keeping a check on middlemen, and to make the paddy procurement centres free from them.

"Usee ke tahat sabhi nodal adhikari laaye gaye thhe (the nodal officers sprang into action under the directions from Adityanath).

Singh said, "It is one of the biggest series of actions against discrepancies and irregularities in the paddy procurement process in UP. Ab tak ka sabse badaa. Vibhaagi karyavaahi ki gayee hai in logon ke khilaf (departmental enquiries have been carried out against the people involved. I will release the numbers soon."

Singh added that action has been taken against more than 1,200 people in the state and that efforts are on to make direct procurement smooth for the farmers.

Last year, Adityanath had issued directions for smooth paddy procurement in the state. He had said that the farmers should not face any difficulty during the paddy and sugarcane procurement season.

Singh has emerged as a prominent face in Adityanath's action on discrepancies in paddy procurement in the state.

He has made surprise visits across districts in eastern UP to get his own view of the situation. The visits will continue in the coming days.

The visits include a surprise visit to a paddy procurement centre in Barabanki district (UP) — recently. This is how he describes the particular centre he visited: "wo bhrashtth se zyada brashtth kendra hai... (more corrupt that the corrupt).

He adds,"... aur unke khilaf humne karyawahi bhi karvaadi hai (have ordered action against them)."

On stumbling upon corrupt practices in paddy procurement, he told this author over the phone: "Barabanki mein maine dekha ki kisan union jo hai wo thhoda... dalali ke madhyam se ho rahi thee kareed, aur kuchh aur log thhe jinke madhyam se ho rahi thhe, to usee par yeh karyawaahi ki gayee hai ..."

At the particular procurement centre in Barabanki, he got hold of the register which carries the entries of farmers who have sold their produce. He conducted a crosscheck to see "whether the details and names of farmers are valid or not".

He took the contact details of names, which were said to be of farmers and were mentioned in that particular register. He picked some numbers randomly and made phone calls to these numbers. The numbers turned out to be of different people.

In this video, he can be seen speaking out a name and saying: Aapne dhaan-vaan kuchh becha hai (have you sold paddy)?" Seemingly, there is some response from the other end.

After a pause he adds, "Apne dhaan nahin becha hai...". He holds the phone away from his ear, waiting for a person from his team to take down details emerging from the call.

He adds, "Mobile number bhi sahi hai, naam bhi sahi hai, inhone dhaan nahin becha hai... theek hai, thank you (the name is correct, the mobile number is correct, he hasn't sold paddy, alright)."

The enquiries revealed discrepancies in the records kept at the centre. He stumbled upon them during his interactions, as the people answering calls on more than a dozen numbers he dialled, hung up on the minister, as soon as they heard his name.

Seemingly admonishing people at the centre, he is heard saying in the video: "Agar yahan do bori chali jayegi kisan ki, char bori chali jayegi, to kaun zimmerdaar hoga? (Who will be responsible if the gunny bags of the produce from farmers go missing)?"

Farmers have reportedly made allegations of the flouting of rules at the procurement centre.

A man, seemingly a farmer, alleges in the video that turns for weighing the produce are compromised against rules depending on the influence of farmers.

He questions why the kattas (gunny bags — each having a quintal's capacity) weighing 80-90-150 quintals are being weighed on days that are allotted for the weighing of the produce from "chhote kisan" (farmers who bring lesser produce) — by the SDM for their convenience.

He adds that he got 30 quintals of produce to the centre on the day allotted to small farmers such as him. "Jo dabang hain unki tol hoti hai, jo dabang nahin hain unki tol nahin hoti hai (those who are influential succeed in getting their produce weighed and those who are not, don't)."

Reportedly, farmers alleged that they are not allowed to sell the produce and "the middlemen brought it for lower prices before selling it back at the nominated MSP to the procurement centre."

More surprise popped up. Reportedly, one person he made a phone call to, even said that he has no agricultural land.

Singh said that he had not come across "itna brashtth" (this corrupt) centre among the 50 centres in the 11-12 districts he had visited so far. He assured action and assured the farmers that the situation would change beginning that day itself and he would make arrangements towards bettering the situation.

Interestingly, Barabanki was in the news for "slow" paddy procurement in December 2020. The report mentions that Member of Parliament from Barabanki, Upendra Singh Rawat, took up the matter.

Rawat and the local MLA made visits to the market to address the situation. The issue came to the notice of Adityanath.

When this author spoke to Singh, he had returned from a tour of Azamgarh and Basti districts.

He told Swarajya that he felt relieved to discover that the farmers of Azamgarh and Basti have a good level of awareness. "kisaan bahut jaagruk hai Purvanchal ka mujhe aisa laga Basti aur Azamgarh mein. Wo apna kisee tarh nuksaan bardashth nahin karta mujhe dekhkar achcha laga (I felt glad to notice that the aware farmer of Azamgarh and Basti will not tolerate any kind of loss on any account in paddy procurement.")

This report quotes Singh as saying that his perception that paddy procurement would be done in the right manner in Barabanki, considering its proximity to Lucknow, was wrong.

He urged the SDM to register a case for false procurement.

He visited Rani Sati Industries Mill in the Safdarjung Market area and found discrepancies there as well. He has ordered an enquiry under a special committee and said that the matter will be taken to CM Adityanath.

The paddy procurement season is tapering towards an end. In districts in Purvanchal, Singh informs, it will end in February.

Singh will head to Bundelkhand next. He say, "The paddy situation has bettered in Bundelkhand this year." He said that he will take steps to ensure that the procurement season ends well for farmers in Bundelkhand.

Looks like the so called Kisan tractor rally will go as planned on 26th. The PJ brokers are claiming there will be 200k tractors, i call it BS and the final number may well be below 10k. They had planned something big similar to Delhi riots for Boris Johnson, but now that he is not coming and GoI has not bothered inviting any other foreign head of the state as the chief guest, i guess making lives of the Delhites even more miserable by running tractors in the middle of the city is the next best thing. The govt is clearly playing it safe, they are not interested in further negotiations nor are they in any hurry to remove the "farmers" from the borders. Saw a video of local villagers and businessmen pleading with the leaders of the protest with folded hands saying their livelihoods are being destroyed because of the blockade but i doubt if they will be vacating anytime soon.

Are there 200k working tractors in all of Punjab?

10k is a huge number, heck even a 500 tractor rally is big. Assuming a 3m length, a 10k rally is going to be 30 km long end to end , more like 60 k long accounting for gaps.

Farmer protest seems to be running out of patience. There is a good chance that Tikait and others present in press conf may be arrested. Apparently they are nowhere to be seen. It is amazing that farmers can gather a press conf of 20-30 media houses in a matter of hours and that too late night.

https://www.opindia.com/2021/01/police- ... rs-to-lie/

A day after the protesting farmer leaders at Delhi border had presented a ‘masked man’, claiming that he was engaged by police to kill four farmer leaders on Republic Day, Haryana Police has confirmed that he was tortured by the farmer union leaders to give false statement against the police. The man was beaten up by the farmers, and he gave false statements under fear, said Haryana police.

In a press conference this evening, Sonipat SP Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said that while the masked man had alleged that he was tasked by one inspector named Pradeep from Rai Police station, actually there is no police inspector named Pradeep in either the Rai police station or the whole district. He said that the person is from Sonipat and is unemployed, who had an argument with the protesting farmers over allegations of eve teasing. He was taken into a farmer camo where he was beaten up. “He has said he made statements under fear”, said that Sonipat SP.

They can do that even today? As I read in a couple of posts above; the locals have already started being inconveniences by the farmer broker gang. And repealing a law is not easy; as it requires a new bill to be passed in Parliament. Parliament is not in session, and most likely would only reconvene for the budget session.

The government seems to have agreed to the farmers broker gangs demands on the rally

https://indianexpress.com/article/citie ... y-7159814/

Essentially, another concession.

Meanwhile more rallies in Mumbai as well

https://indianexpress.com/article/citie ... e-7159067/

They have figured out this government and reckoned it cannot do anything, so all other sundries and have beens are joining in as well.

Well played to opposition. It will now be impossible to make any sort of reforms at this rate.

Expect the Khalistanis to now bring in plebiscite demand for Punjab more forcefully, with the usual gang in Biden and Trudeau administrations providing cover. Thankfully one can be assured at from Modijis side that at least this demand will be contemptuously ignored.

May be I am mistaken, or incorrectly assessing the situation. But I saw a 'silver lining in the dark cloud' ;).
#1 - the rally will only happen AFTER the republic day parade gets over. Which means that the main stream media cannot do comparisons, or kind of play up this rally at the expense of the official parade.
#2 - the rally is happening in three circuits all close to the outer ring road at Delhi. They are not trying their tricks in other parts of Delhi, or in areas where the main government buildings etc. are there.

So let the farmer brokers just spend more cost on fuel - tractor's mileage is not great any ways - roam around parts of Delhi irritating all the residents there. But the question remains. What's next for the farmer brokers? The law is only stayed for two months by Hon. SC.

GoI has very limited to none levers it can pull. Usually in a negotiation, both sides give and take. In this case GoI has been conceding a number of things without any concession on the farmers part. This has emboldened them and others as well. The decision to allow the rally on outer ring road is the latest example. This will now be touted as an example of how farmers captured Delhi, and fodder for the Khalistani narrative.

There will be violence for some protestors will surely try to break away from the planned route. Lets say hypothetically a 100 tractors try to break away and want to go somewhere else. How exactly does the police stop this?

Then there will be some idiots who will try to raise the so called flag of Khalistan on Rajpath...

It is no use saying all the above will cause the farmers to lose sympathy. We had that argument at Shaheen Bagh...GoI got lucky on that with Covid.

@Sachinji,
As to what next, there will be a demand to gherao the Parliament next. All the opposition will be only too happy to join the farmers in this. That or complete blockade of all roads into Delhi. Kejriwal will only be too happy to signpost the roads for this endeavour.

This shaheen bagh idea will be refined even more in future.

Let AS concentrate on winning elections in states where BJP is not in power. With his uselessness, he is joining the esteemed group of jabdakar, purrsaad and other assorted dead weights in the party.

Khan saab, there is nothing Amit Shah or any HM can do. This is India where it is not hard to gather 5000 people for a wedding, so a well funded protest anywhere can easily manage 25k to 30k people and sustain it for months (see my post above of a recent Congress rally in Bangalore). Even with all the intelligence, what do you do when thousands march ? Use force and it guarantees deaths and bloodshed, and which in turn will set off million other fires across the country. And do nothing and you end up inconveniencing and destroying daily lives of citizens in one city. See, these "protests" will never be tolerated or allowed in other states, block Bangalore or Mumbai and the citizens will take the "protestors" to task even if the local governments do not, so the govt makes a strategic decision to just let the nonsense go on in Delhi with the hopes that people will lose interest and the sold-old fake media will move on to the next outrage. The last days of shaheenbagh had <200 dadis sitting in the tents, the farmers protest too will meet the same fate sooner or later, had it not been for the media these protests would have fizzled out by end of December.

The BIF template for these "protests" is word to word copied from the templates of other leftist revolutions the last 70 yrs or so. You use those sections of society that can readily organize but also gets social sympathy and use them to unleash violence, overthrow governments and create chaos. Farmers, laborers, women, minorities and students have been used by the left with great effect for decades across the world, we will continue to see these groups being used against the government until the elections. The only thing government can do is go after the funds and when some of these "protests" subsides, ruthlessly pick off the main sponsors of these protests one by one silently.

Ambar-saar, why do we have ED/IT ministries? Let the sarkaari spokesmen speak soothingly to media and the troublemakers. In the meantime, unleash these departments and attach their properties. Khaalistani idiots have confirmed their support, use NSA and jail the brokers and their families in the comforting jails of Andaman Nicobar. Let the cases have bail hearings post 6 months.

Dontcha think the above could have been done early? No funds no movements. 56 inch mor baapu self promoted from Supreme Leader to weak bladdered Vishwa Guru status too early.

Shaheen Bagh was a disaster, this farmer protests is a bigger disaster. Cowardice is not some Chanakian/4D chess move. Retreat and cowardice is also a strategy I agree, but not expected of a party who have 303 seats.

The days of strong arming to break up protests are long gone. No government should have an appetite for large scale violence against protestors that have been peaceful.

Barring certain mistakes, GoI has not had much choice in this matter

Somehow I think the handling of protests would've gone a lot different if it was pappu and family with 303 seats and hindus were protesting one of the countless issues plaguing the community.

Just hope NaMo and co have a plan they're following and not simply trying to wait out the "protester" gangs. There are plenty of ethical and non-ethical ways of dealing with such gangs and it's absolutely not true that GoI don't have much choice in this matter.

The plan is "no plan". Put the head inside the musharaff and kiss it goodbye. Tomorrow another set of reforms will be announced and same strategy will be employed. One foot on the accelerator, one on the brake, opposition's feet on the a$$.

In a country such as ours the funds for these protests don't necessarily flow through the banking system, hawala is still trusted and used by millions, funds can be raised organically too through religious centers, food and fuel ration is "donated" (by force in many cases). Hindus lack the organization ability to rally behind a common cause even for a day, let alone waylaid Delhi for months, so yes, pappu with 303 seats would have cleared hindus in a day because Hindus don't have a global ecosystem behind them. This is also the reason why Manohar Lal Khattar's govt did not hesitate to gun down DSS supporters ruthlessly but cannot even think of baton charging farmers.

Oh well, inaction as a strategy is good. Atleast, free loading population in Dilli get to face the full brunt of these agitations, it's all right.

There is something rotten in the stench of Dilli-hava, which makes any hindu hriday samraat to turn them into meek friendly billi with a incurable appetite to get nobel piss prize.

When Yogi-baba gets to viraajmaan the seat hope he does not start wearing attar and repeat kalima

Ambar Saar it's true our country has security gaps like the hawala system but it's also true that the anonymous nature of it can be used by either side. I won't spell it out here but it's extremely easy to use it in an unethical way to rein in the protester gangs.

One of the reasons lefty ecosystem is so huge is because they have no qualms in using power ruthlessly. While for Bjp I get the feeling that the unscrupulous elements are just waiting them out because they know they'll never take off the gloves.

This news finally reached CNN after decades and a month after the actual conviction.

She was murdered for catching an Indian priest and nun in a sex act. Three decades later, justice is served

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/23/asia/sis ... index.html

The details are pretty gory:
There was one witness, in particular, who had testimony Puthenpurackal felt was key to convicting the case. Adacka Raju was a "thief by profession," according to court documents. He had trespassed onto the hostel campus on the night of the murder to steal copper plates from the terrace, which he planned to sell, according to court documents.

Raju had stolen copper plates from the hostel twice before. But on his third attempt -- the night of the murder -- he told the court that he saw two men approaching the staircase. He identified one of them as Father Kottoor.

Father Kottoor threatened Puthenpurackal at a protest for Sister Abhaya. According to court documents, Father Kottoor warned Puthenpurackal that he would be "handled in the proper manner," also pointing out that "no one working against the church had ever been spared."
