That is a nice looking vehicle.

So how does it work with these Joint Ventures? Is the cost per-vehicle then cheaper than if they purchased it directly from the OEM? What is Kalyani offering to reduce the costs below what it would cost to just acquire OEM vehicles?

Local manufacture, presumably, to lower labor costs?

That doesn't really look like an on-site photograph from Ladakh. If you look at the transition from the foreground to background, it looks either like a screen background taken off google maps, or recreated, or a very good Photoshop job. These are publicity photos after all.

Screwdrivergiri, unfortunately. Am a little disappointed that the order went to Kalyani, when domestic designed & developed platforms were available

Lets stop criticizing after decision is made.
Mine proof vehicles are South African speciality since Angola War..

Paramount tied up with Kalyani group.
Orders are from the Emergency funds.
Future orders will depend on how these perform.

^^ All MPV by Indian manufacturers are based on South African design. No need to single out Kalyani.

But then again, Army has hundreds of MPV already in service. Why the emergency procurement? Or is this in some category different from MPV?

M4 is big, yet smaller compared to all other MPVs I have seen in person. This one seems to be an armoured Humvee type while others are like large mini-buses which can't go everywhere.
BTW, what's with just 200 vehicles? Any idea which units will receive them?

Jamwal you are correct in your assertion about size being big but small in relation to other mpvs. I feel like this looks more akin to a similar evolution of how the hummer led to the oshkosh JLTV. Suspect these might be similar sizes.

This is definitely a pleasant surprise. I thought the LSV deal had died a quiet death in the MoD. Finally we can replace the venerable Gypsy.

Although the IA ordered 3000 more of those just in 2019, so maybe not yet.

Feel sorry for Tata as they were vying for this deal for years as well. They had a good offering as well but both Force and Mahindra have walked away with orders.

Kudos to Mahindra though with Rakshak+, Marksman and now ALSV accepted.

Tata has not done too bad with Safari contract but are getting bad press due to accidents. Secondly they have taken it off the civil market thus creating a doubt for future contracts

If you give every order to just one company you never will develop an industry.

https://twitter.com/singhshwetabh71/sta ... 15749?s=20 ---> Days after ordering a very small batch of M4, today Army has ordered approx 1300 Mahindra LSV. Remember interestingly we had ordered even Gurkha LSV for paras a little while ago. Also we are already using a very small batch of Mahindra ASLVs of UN duty.

The Mahindra ALSV is an indigenously developed armoured vehicle that is available with ballistic protection up to B7, STANAG Level II. It is powered by a 3.2-litre multi-fuel diesel engine, available with a 4 or 6-speed automatic transmission. The motor is claimed to develop 215hp and 500Nm of torque. It has a top speed of greater than 120 kph and can do 0-60 kph in 12 seconds.

The 4×4 system on the ALSV features front and rear diff locks. Working with all the other tech and mechanicals, the Mahindra ALSV has a 30-degree gradability. It has a payload capacity of 1,000 kgs. The ALSV is sprung on a high travel all-wheel independent suspension with a central type tyre inflation system.

The vehicle can be equipped with a self-recovery winch. To be able to navigate through the harsh desert and dusty terrains, the ALSV features a self-cleaning-type exhaust scavenging and air filtration system. The 318/80 R17 section tyres are designed to have a run-flat distance of 50 km.

The modular design of the Mahindra ALSV allows for it to be equipped with Surveillance Configuration In-Service GPS, or feature an automatic grenade launcher or Medium Machine Gun. It also features Blast Mitigation Floor Mats.

IAF inducts specialist vehicles for airbase security against terror attacks
In a bid to strengthen its capability to tackle terrorists trying to launch attacks inside its air bases like the Pathankot Airbase, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has inducted specialist vehicles that can withstand bullet and grenade attacks.

"The Light Bullet Proof Vehicles (LBPVs) have been inducted into the service and would be deployed at the airbases to be used during any terrorist attack to suppress them," IAF officials told ANI here.

The six-tonne vehicle has been designed and developed in a way that its engine remains hidden from the front and rear side and cannot be targeted easily, they said.

The vehicle has been provided protection by equipping with 6 mm thick armoured protection and a 40 mm windshield, which can withstand AK-47 and sniper rifle bullets, the officials said.

A canopy covered or protected by armour has also been provided which can allow the gunner to fire freely at its target.

The vehicle can be driven at high speeds up to 100 to 120 km and can also be run on flat tyres, the officials said.

The vehicles can accommodate six fully geared Garud commandos or Quick Reaction Team (QRT) members while the open space in the rear can have more men.

The Light Strike Vehicle (LSV), Light Specialist Vehicle (LSV) and Light Bullet Proof Vehicle (LBPV) has been a successful program - created a family of vehicles across all major companies, bespoke to Indian needs. It took a while as the first competition which had original Tata LSV, OFB Flyer, Vectra and Mahindra Axe was nearly 15 years ago IIRC.

Force Motors LSV, Mahindra ALSV, Ashok Leyland LBPV have already been inducted at this stage. Over time, the 3 services and CAPFs are likely to order more.
