This time Vietnam will be played live across MSM and SM.
It won't. If these were normal times then the whitehouse, the Pentagon and the defense secretary would have been skewered by the media on a daily basis, thousands of hours would be spent analyzing the US military debacle, the decisions that went into pulling the troops overnight, the failure of ANA to even put up a decent fight and a thorough investigation into Pakistan's role. Instead there's a completely silence, blockade of the Afghan war news on social media and mainstream media , no one is calling out the failure of the US administration or its military.

Given the political climate in the US, the discourse in the media and the general attitude of the public, i think its safe to say the days of US military adventurism are over atleast when it comes to ground troops. The future military interventions will be fought from the sky or through small special operations.

Question is how soon will Pakistan try to use this as a leverage to push more jihadi fodder through the border ?

Ex-U.S. Army Captain calls America’s friendship a ‘death sentence’ unless Afghan allies can be saved
Emily DeCiccio, Aug 12 2021

Matthew Zeller, who served in Afghanistan as an Army Captain, raised the alarm for the potential civilian toll of the Taliban’s rapid advance toward Kabul.
“Unfortunately, at this point, it seems to be that American friendship is, in fact, a death sentence, unless we save our Afghan wartime allies, they’re going to be murdered by the Taliban,” said the co-founder of “No One Left Behind,” an organization that helps get special visas for interpreters from Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Thus far, I have not heard a single thing from this administration and how we’re going to protect the some 44,000 of those people who live currently outside of Kabul.”
Since President Joe Biden set a Sept. 11 deadline to remove all troops from Afghanistan in April, the Taliban have made far-reaching battlefield advances across Afghanistan with now nearly two-thirds of the nation under their control.
On Thursday the city of Ghanzi fell to the Taliban — their 10th Afghan provincial capital. Zeller told CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith” that he served in and lived in Ghanzi, and the fall of the city reflected poorly on the U.S.
“This is such a shameful day for our country, because we could have saved our Afghan wartime allies before all of this transpired,” Zeller said. “The Biden administration seems to have been so concerned with the optics of a chaotic evacuation that in choosing to do nothing, up until now, they have ensured the very thing that they were most afraid of, a chaotic evacuation.”

There is another angle to Media silence. They would have done exactly the opposite if it was a Republican administration. Also there is very little political appetite for losing troops in foreign soil on both sides of the political spectrum. Plus there is nothing to win in Afghanistan.

Pakis are bankrupt and you can't fool around with Chinese money supply in the same way you do with the US. It is long since GoI has changed the redlines on abduls in the border. Push comes to shove Modi Govt will not hesitate to strike the Pakis at will. Seems like GoI is in wait and watch mode. It all depends on what the Bunnies will do. If US continues to use drones and air strikes it may take a long time before they can gain power. It is still a very fluid situation.

What Happened to the Afghan Army?

From Major Amin. As time goes on, we will no doubt see more information about how the USA “lost Afghanistan”. At the level of American PR/media the blame will mostly fall on Pakistan for now, since there is a lot of truth in it and it gets the clowns who run the state dept and the pentagon off the hook (or so they think) but in time the details about how the US mismanaged its project will also become prominent.. this is one of them. (To some extent it is a structural issue.. Americans live so far above/away from Afghan (or even Pakistani) reality.. well intentioned ones have no framework that remotely resembles situation on the ground, ill intentioned ones only want to make money or have fun killing gooks)

WHAT HAPPENED TO AFGHAN NATIONAL ARMY

Agha H Amin
Arm chair strategists are taking great delight in criticizing Afghan Army for collapsing in face of so called Taliban onslaught.

“A little knowledge of philosophy , inclineth man towards atheism” as the adage goes but , “depth in philosophy bringeth back man to God !” This is how I will describe these novices and critics !

The first point to be noted is that armies are not created by US firms like Military Professional Human Resources International in a decade but a long process spanning centuries.

The real Afghan Army with traditions dating back to 1719 or 1747 was destroyed by joint US Pakistan design about 1978-1992 when a proxy war was financed in Afghanistan.

Characters like Peter Tomsen went out of their way to destroy the real Afghan Army between 1989 and 1992 , just because it was viewed as Pro Soviet or Pro Russian entity.

Afghanistan had no army between 1992 and 2001.

In 2001 the USA initiated efforts to create a new army but this exercise had ulterior motives. First the exercise was awarded to contractors which was the first blunder.

US myopia and petty mindset was such that USSR trained pilots , available in thousands were not reemployed as they were regarded as Russian proxies !

While the USSR trained many thousand Afghans in USSR and Warsaw Pact states, US petty parsimony and narrowmindedness was such that hardly any Afghan was taken to the USA for courses.

Instead characters who no one would employ in USA , and had no options were in Afghanistan training the Afghan Army.

To give an example , the main project supervisor of Schools and Clinics program in Louis Burger was a male nurse ! To entrust billion dollar construction projects to a male nurse was ludicrous.

My driver and many taxi drivers I met were outstanding war pilots trained for 5 years in USSR and with combat flying experience between 3000 hours to 15,000 hours !

Tanks were regarded as future threat and armour was hardly created or organised.

The list is endless but will never be investigated like Louis Burgers billion dollar failure published by Washington Post as a “BUILDING PLAN FULL OF CRACKS” , LATE 2005 !

The simple issue was security ! US trainers were simply SCARED that they would get shot in the back !

SO THERE WAS HARDLY ANY TRAINING !!!

I saw some of these contractors in Kabul when I was living about 110 metres from gate of Kabul Compound or camp Eggers !

These characters were here to do hole punching and make some bucks and not to create an army. So the real spirit was missing .

The USA preferred so called ex Mujahids which was a bad idea.

The best Afghan officers like Ulumi etc were never taken in the loop as they were considered pro Russian.

Many old Afghan Army officers joined but these were sabotaged by the Mujahid Mafia who were a collection of USA, Pakistan or so many other state proxies who had destroyed their own country between 1978 and 1992 !

The unkindest cut was delivered by this character Ashraf Ghani who between 2014 and 2019 summarily removed 90 % of pre 1992 Afghan Army officers , thus totally destroying the Afghan Army !

The incompetent US staff in Kabul did not oppose this most IDIOTIC and FOOLISH step !

Or perhaps it was US design that Afghan Army should collapse quickly so that the Taliban are back in power and then they can be sorted out properly !

The collapse of Afghan Army has to be seen in the context of the fact that FIRST the USA and its proxy states DESTROYED the REAL AFGHAN ARMY in 1978-92 ! Then the RECONSTRUCTION of AFGHAN ARMY by the USA was a SHALLOW EXERCISE , MARRED by MASSIVE CORRUPTION and a BAD TEAM . Lastly no army can be created in 20 years . FINALLY Ashraf Ghanis Removal of the REAL AFGHAN ARMY OFFICERS BETWEEN 2014 AND 2019 WAS THE DEATH SENTENCE OF AFGHAN ARMY !

The speed at which ANA flanks are folding and putting down of arms without fight indicate following possibilities:
1. US really failed to train the ANDSF properly and had only yesmen at commanding positions who are unable to rally their forces.
2. US being desperate to get out of the swamp, has struck a backdeal with their old ally Pakistan/Taliban and has handed over Afganistan to them as carrot for their safe and immediate exit, and one of them has bribed the ANDSF officers enabling to whitewash the Taliban takeover as failure of Afgan army.
3. Seems unlikely so far but, ANDSF is concentrating/regrouping troops and trying to make Taliban stretch and thin out their strength in order to make them the defenders similar to what happened to ISIS in Syria.

Another observation in recent times is Nato members/allies(Turkey and Pakies) are switching to opposing side to get their cheese when things get hard and massa seems unable or unwilling to punish them.
1. In Syria it was Turkey finally who switched/pretended to switch to Russian side when there was stalemate and grabbed Syrian land while US abandoned the YPG.
2. Similarly in Afghanistan, Pakistan are in Russian/Chinese camp in final session, while US pulls the rug under the Afg government.
Whether this is result of waning Us power or a careful strategy to deceive opposition remains to be seen.

Looks like the US military was just running a media campaign. After dropping the "Mother of all Bombs" against the Taliban and Prince Harry telling the media "I shot at the Taliban"....this could be real embarrassment. Either this or murkily "Saare mile hue hain" ...and so this is happening. Or like the ground situation in Afghanistan is hopeless

America will never admit that it made mistake. Because they never make mistakes. I hope the nato countries understand this and come to senses. What they gained in last 20 years? Nothing. One wonder how quickly America destroyed Talibans in 2001. With better intelligence and arms they could do it again. Is it possible they they are going to use mother of bombs in Talibam strongholds? After all Gen Schwartzkoff had this solution in mind. All Europeans have left country.

Even with so much "reforms" and throwing money by Americans, they couldn't buy or shift loyalties of ANA and other Afghans. A huge number of American causalities in Afghanistan were cold blooded murders and ambushes done enabled by uniformed ANA soldiers and other local "allies". They spent hundreds of billions in the country since 80s, yet failed to create or buy local allies who could really help them. Same thing more or less with pakis too.

It makes one wonder what kind of idiots make policies for US govt and how can it go on for decades without any visible course correction in the self-proclaimed greatest democracy in the world. The fools in India who are itching to provide military and financial aid to Afghans should learn from American experience. They will accept everything you give them for free, but you will always be a dirty kafir or outsider worthy of slaughter. With current ideology followed by these people, there is no redemption for them. India needs to let them all fight among themselves and maybe get them to inflict some pain on Pakistanis. No Indian rupee should go for construction of any infrastructure, education or any sort of aid. Many Talibani factions are financed and even manned by Pakis, but it can't be possible without grassroot support for the ideology. Let them poison themselves with opium and blow each other with RPGs. A tribal society with access to weapons and infused with islam is incapable of doing anything else.

^^Along with that, it's also important to note that even though they will fight amongst each other, they will also try to drag others to their level. Hence, their motto is na jiyenge, na kisiko jeene denge. So if there is any terror attack sponsored by Talibunnies in India, there should be a disproportionate reaction.

It doesn't matter for us, who fights with whom and who wins. We shouldn't be sending in any of our men or material.

What is troublesome is that we allowed PA such an easy victory. I hope we have discussed with the NA to set up a safe haven in the Northern region with arms support to protect it. Atleast allow some escape route to the people, who don't like Talibs.

We are lucky Pak is not rich enough to take on us. Otherwise with our Ahimsa,Ghandiri & non-aligment, our nation would have been bloodied left & right by Pak.

Three Indian engineers rescued in Afghanistan from area not under control of Afghan forces
The embassy cited the rescue of the engineers in fresh security advisory while calling upon all Indians in Afghanistan to strictly adhere to the measures advised by it in view of a spike in violence in that country.
Press Trust of India, August 13, 2021

Three Indian engineers, who worked at a project site in an area not under the control of Afghan government forces, were rescued by air recently, according to the Indian embassy in Kabul on Thursday.
The embassy cited the rescue of the engineers in fresh security advisory while calling upon all Indians in Afghanistan to strictly adhere to the measures advised by it in view of a spike in violence in that country.
"A recent case that required emergency air rescue of three Indian engineers who remained at a dam project site, in an area not under the control of government forces, has brought to light that Indian nationals receiving this embassy's advisories are not heeding its advice and continue to put themselves in mortal danger," the embassy said in a fresh advisory.
It is learnt that the engineers were working in an area that has been under the control of the Taliban.
"Embassy of India Kabul once again underscores the need for all Indian nationals to fully adhere to steps in the security advisories provided from time to time," the advisory said.
The embassy had issued separate security advisories on June 29, July 24 and August 10, recommending a series of measures to ensure the safety and security of the Indians living in that country.

In my opinion with the world situation as it is, there is only one way to bring Afghanistan back to civilization.

That is for China to provide funding to Russia to militarily take over Afghanistan. This time the US will not interfere, in fact it should be a huge relief to the US and particularly for the EU for a somewhat functional Afghanistan. China can use the minerals in Afghanistan, it can exploit whatever there is to exploit. Russia can keep the Americans and other meddlesome people out of the region. China has neither the will, nor the access or ability to directly fight in Afghanistan. Russia has the deep institutional history, the motivation to be the big fellow in the region, and overland access via the Stans which still have deep connections with the mother state. There is nothing in it for India, nor does India lose anything if a coalition of Russia/China runs Afghanistan instead of the Taliban. Pakistan will have to acquiesce to whatever iron brother does including providing access to the hundreds of lorries carting off lithium ores, prisoners, brides and whatever else the Chinese want to take back home.

What happens to Afghanistan is not our concern. The issue is about Pak getting horns that it has defeated 2 super power. It's model of arming proxies and making deals has worked for it. It just needs to bid time. The yahoo's in Kashmir will the most glad about this.

It has proved to be the perfect rental state, able to make deal with anyone. We are meanwhile on a "sarve jano sukinthu" and "non-alignment" trip. Until we learn to really maul PA on LC, we will not see the end of infiltration.

I agree with this. Everytime bakis think they have won something they go on a high and become like a mad dog off it's lease. Which results in terror attacks here or a unstable J&K. Whatever happens in Afghanistan, Bakis must not be allowed to feel as winners.

Maybe the answer is ... Unlike Britain & France - Germany (along with Italy, Spain & a few Nordic countries and SK/Japan/Taiwan in East Asia) is/are dependent on USA for Nuke Protection. So they may not be that keen on ditching US.

Check out this article in WION. A US journalist asked the Pentagon's chief spokesman about the irony of the fact that while 2500 troops were being withdrawn, 3000 troops are being inducted!!

Meanwhile the Bunnies controlled by our beloved Porkis are just 80 km from Kabul as of today, it would appear!
Talk about about a house of cards collapsing. The Afghan Army has just silently melted away.

Either the Pentagon got it their assessment all wrong, or they just played along with Sleepy Joe's silly assessment. In any case, Sleepy Joe never, ever got any foreign policy right the first time.

Stating a deadline publically for withdrawal is a silly idea, given its military implications. The Taliban's advance seems to be remarkably timed to meet that 11 Sep 2021 deadline!

In any case, latest news indicate that Ghani & Co are being pressurised to step down by the mediating group in Doha. A mix of local warlords and the Bunnies are slated to take over. So perhaps, it was a 'fixed' match after all?

I sure hope other than the Afghani staff who worked in Indian consulates we are not planning to bring in any Afghani refugees or citizens of people's islamic socialist republic of Kerala who voluntarily went there to join AQ/ISIS/Taliban. We already have enough security headaches thanks to illegal Banglas, Rohingyas, Nigerians, Congolese etc. don't need one more. For the bleeding hearts i just hope they look up the pictures of Bahmiyan Buddha statutes in the late 19th century or early 20th century, the taliban only finished what the Afghanis have been doing for hundreds of years , i.e. systematically wiping out any traces of their history, civilization and completing the total genocide of non-muslims.

All that apart the silence in the US media about this total collapse of US' political, diplomatic and military strategy in Afghanistan is deafening. The failure to even ask fundamental questions about who is responsible for this rout, Pakistan's duplicity, how a tiny Qatar along with broken Turkey and Pakistan outmaneuvered the US politically and diplomatically all goes to show that the US is no longer the power it once was. I think its only a matter of time before KSA/UAE/Kuwait etc. send a olive branch to China.

the worlds greatest sooperpower has been reduced to this sorry pass and that too when confronting an illiterate unwashed and much mocked enemy.

Bidenwa cut and ran abruptly, even in the face of the US military strongly advising a planned and phased withdrawal.

certainly there will be a lot of money changing hands because that is the only language that these jehadi "holy" warriors understand and it is also the one language that the amerikis speak exceptionally fluently.

bidenwa's "advisors" seem to have purposely dropped him in very deep $chitt.

After a poorly planned and chaotic withdrawal, Joe Biden is now begging and bribing the Taliban not to attack our embassy?

Pathetic. https://t.co/BSzOwID0LS

If I keep aside the notion of log kya kahenge type rona dhona, what is our loss. I am sure Taliban like to use electricity and water for irrigation. Instead, it is clear that US has lost face despite high tech war machine. It gives us leverage in QUAD. Sitting on any future planning table, IA will have more leverage . We have seen result of strategic and tactical planning of US armed forces .

Leverage in the Quad? US has shown what a fickle and unreliable player it is. It has shown how susceptible it is to domestic political pull. It has shown unwillingness to engage deeply (other than throwing money which was anyway siphoned back by US contractors). If this is the central player in the Quad, then the grouping is close to useless.

Our leverage in the Quad is that we pay to play. We pay top dollar for P-8Is, we pay for F-404s and we pay for Apaches. Unkil understands greenback. We can make noises about the democratic alternative but when push comes to shove we are on our own.

Sorry for OT, but Afghanistan is once again reminding us why we never trusted Unkil and we never put our eggs into His basket.

Has there been any discussion around Taliban using Pakistan for strategic depth? In the past, the Pakistani army wanted depth and considered Afghanistan under Taliban as it's own real estate. This was meant to deter Indian's from slicing them in war. Imagine if the role reverses now and the Taliban come up with the notion of taking over Pakistan. There are many in the Pakistani army who will help them. Taliban will thus get strategic depth along with access to a large land mass, a large population to lord over and critical control of the Chinese Highway to warm Arabian water. To make matter sweeter, they may also get access to nuclear weapons. This puts them at a significant advantage just like North Korea. They no longer will fear any of the major powers from dislodging them.

Just my random musing but would like to hear from gurus if this is something that has been discussed. Would appreciate if you could point to the discussion from the past.

I am not sure if Talibunnies have any use for electricity or water for irrigation. If they did, they wouldn't have tried to destroy that dam a fortnight ago.

That was ISI in disguise. Now when they have dam in their control, are they going to destroy? Do not think so.

The Americans actively kept ANA at a light infantry level as the bunnies. They didn't even arm ANA with ATGM. Looking at the devastation caused by ATGM, it would have made a significant support for ANA.

The US was probably sh** scared of ANA used ATGM on their troops, plus must have made a deal with PA not to arm ANA with such weapon, in return for bunnies not being armed with one.

Even if we could not have send boots, we could easily send units of ATGM teams to embed them with ANA and provide frontline support. SSG units must be hitting ANA target with ATGM as we speak.

I just wish that US can deflect all the blame on the Pakis. India should help amplify this and give Biden administration a worthwhile alibi.

Mark my words. Pakis are going to be the ultimate loser in this whole episode. Indians should wait and watch this go down while withdrawing from Afghanistan.

It has proved to be the perfect rental state, able to make deal with anyone. We are meanwhile on a "sarve jano sukinthu" and "non-alignment" trip. Until we learn to really maul PA on LC, we will not see the end of infiltration.
You just contradicted yourselves in two paras. How can a rental state get high on defeating two super power BS. Most Pakis know the truth about their role. The others either fake it and have money/franchises in Europe/US or have short lives.

There is no NA this time to support. Most northern warlords are on run and are outside Afghanistan. India is reading this right and is not getting excited. Taliban takeover of Afghanistan is given from day 1. The real game would start after that.

U.S. Embassy In Kabul Tells Staff To Destroy Sensitive Material And Evacuate
Greg Myre, Emily Alfin Johnson, August 13, 2021

A memo obtained by NPR lays out the emergency preparations underway by American diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul — including the destruction of sensitive documents and computers — as most of them prepare to leave the country.
The memo was written for staff at the embassy and shared with NPR on condition of anonymity.
Most diplomats will be evacuated by 3,000 U.S. troops on their way to Kabul to ensure a safe and orderly departure. However, a very small consular staff will work in Kabul, the memo noted.
The embassy staffers were instructed to destroy important papers and desktop computers before they leave, according to the document.
Charge d'affaires Ross Wilson, the acting ambassador, is also meeting his counterparts in other embassies and updating them on the rapidly changing situation.
The U.S. has also called on the Taliban not to attack the embassy and departing U.S. diplomats. The embassy also employs many Afghan workers. Their future was not immediately clear.
Taliban take more territory
The Taliban's swift advance in recent days has far outpaced U.S. predictions about what would happen as the U.S. withdrew after 20 years of war.
President Biden announced in April that the remaining 2,500 troops would be leaving. That pullout was more than 90 percent complete and is supposed to be finished by the end of the month.
The expectation was that President Ashraf Ghani's government could keep at least some measure of control over the country's main cities.
But the Taliban have responded by launching an offensive that has led to the capture of major cities in the north, west and south of the country. The militant group seized its biggest prizes to date by taking Kandahar, the biggest city in the south, and Herat, the main city in the West.

Taliban nears Kabul as major cities fall in Afghanistan: Live
Taliban seizes six more provincial capitals in a single day as the US, European countries evacuate embassy staff.
Tamila Varshalomidze and Mersiha Gadzo, 13 Aug 2021

The Taliban armed group has captured the provincial capitals, Qalat, Terenkot, Pul-e-Alam, Feruz Koh, Qal-e-Naw and Lashkar Gah, hours after capturing Herat and Kandahar cities.
It so far has control over 18 provincial capitals across Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is tipping towards civil war and the West must understand that the Taliban is not a single entity but a title for a myriad of competing interests, the United Kingdom’s defence minister says.
“Britain found that out in the 1830s, that it is a country led by warlords and led by different provinces and tribes, and you end up, if you’re not very careful in a civil war, and I think we are heading towards a civil war,” Defence Secretary Ben Wallace tells the BBC.
“The Taliban is not entirely a single entity, they break down underneath the title into all sorts of different interests,” Wallace said.
