Sorry ramana, these weren't on Netflix. They are from SHQ's network of expat Japanese friends typically on DVD. Some recommendations though:ramana wrote:Suraj,
Can you recommend a few serials on Netflix?
* Idaten: describes the history of Kanakuri Shiso, Japan's first Olympian. How Japan went into the first Olympics, and was discouraged by the sight of stronger bigger Europeans, estimating it would take 50 years for an Asian to win a medal. However they systematically got better at sports, and he was among those who pushed the Meiji administration to make sports a part of the modern Japanese educational curriculum. How cool is that ? It's a great story. Japan later went on to become a powerhouse in many Olympic sports, having accumulated almost 160 golds in the past 100 years. The story is set through flashbacks from the late 1950s, when Japan works hard to host the 1964 Olympics, fixing the postwar city infrastructure, building the stadium and the Tokyo-Osaka bullet train line. Japan finished 3rd behind US and USSR in that Olympics, a far cry from being scared of big westerners 50 years before that.
* Ryomaden: Chronicles the life of Ryoma Sakamoto, a Japanese Jefferson of sorts, who advocated a path balancing western modernity and Japanese traditions in the chaotic early Meiji Restoration years. GREAT story from an Indian context - they faced the 'how do we remain Japanese and be modern' question back in the 1870s.
* Segodon: Chronicles the life of Saigo Takamori, the original 'last samurai', who was killed in the Satsuma Rebellion with the Meiji emperor's westernized military, trying to cling on to old Japanese traditions in the face of modernity. The real story, not some Tom Cruj nonsense supposedly 'inspired' by it where drunk white guy comes and becomes samurai overnight trying to save Japan.
Most of these constitute a category called Taiga drama. I saw Idaten a few months ago.
This is what I'd love to see India doing. It can be Dhyan Chand or Roop Singh or Kashaba Jadhav. It can be Bhagat Singh Thind. It can be Madan Lal Dhingra. I'm just throwing some random names here. Dhingra's statement in court while being condemned is legendary... and mostly unknown. A shame.

There's a belief that anime and manga is mostly mindless scifi with funny cartoon characters like Pokemon. But that's not all. Anime is also a genre documenting historical stories and great personal dramas that have been made into well known TV and movies. Re: India and Japan: News and Discussion
Tbh my first experience with Japan has been through manga and anime when Hindi dubbed versions of anime was broadcasted on cartoon network. It was a beautiful world I experienced at that time. The stories were much deeper than average American comics and even though some of them were fantasy, I as a 10 year old could relate to it much better than I could to superman or batman. As I got into my teens, I was drawn to JapaneseSuraj wrote:There's a belief that anime and manga is mostly mindless scifi with funny cartoon characters like Pokemon. But that's not all. dramas especially the high school dramas. As I got more matured, I went through some critically acclaimed manga, anime and dramas where I could really appreciate their culture and admire how they transformed their country during Meiji restoration and then after the world war.
The point I wanted to make it, a lot of people from my generation had similar experiences as I had and they got to know about Japan and respect for what they have achieved. I believe it all started when Cartoon network started broadcasting Hindi dubbed Japanese animes.

While making serials, movies are certainly welcome the biggest problem we face is to show sections in a favorable light (there is an element of white washing a certain events so as to not ruffle feathers and let it pass censor. It might a little longer to show things without the political correctness and the actual history so that people get inspired by what you mentioned Suraj San.Suraj wrote:... snipramana wrote:Suraj,

All this favourable light stuff is just details to be figured out. It's not like Japan doesn't have controversial characters and even India has had controversial shows. I think most Indians don't know about Yukio Mishima but it's worth reading about him, and particularly how his life ended. Fair warning - it's grisly, and surprisingly recent, not 100s of years ago.

Japan to scrap 1% GDP cap on defense spending: Minister Kishi
“We must increase our defense capabilities at a radically different pace than in the past,” considering China’s increased capabilities, as well as new areas of warfare such as space, cyber and electromagnetics, Kishi said.
The Nansei Island chain stretches from the southernmost tip of Kyushu to the north of Taiwan and consists of small islands such as Osumi, Tokara, Amami, Okinawa, Miyako and Yaeyama. Last month, the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning and five escort vessels passed through the Miyako Strait, a 250 km-wide waterway between Okinawa and Miyako, before heading south to Taiwan.
On regional security cooperation via the Quad -- a loose alliance among the U.S., Japan, India and Australia -- Kishi said he is in favor of a "Quad defense ministers meeting."

Shots were heard and a white puff of smoke was seen as Abe made a stump speech for a Sunday upper house election outside a train station in the western city, NHK said.

Shinzo Abe: The legacy of Japan's longest serving PM
Published July 8, 2022
Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving prime minister, was known for his hawkish foreign policy and a signature economic strategy that popularly came to be known as "Abenomics".
A conservative nationalist by most descriptions, the 67-year-old Abe led the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to victory twice.
His first stint as prime minister was brief - for a little over a year starting in 2006 - and controversial.
But he made a surprising political comeback in 2012, and stayed in power until 2020 when he resigned for health reasons.
Japan was in a recession when he began his second term and his economic policy - built on monetary easing, fiscal stimulus and structural reforms - was credited with helping growth return to a faltering economy.
He also oversaw Japan's recovery from a massive earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku in 2011, which killed nearly 20,000 people and led to a meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear reactors.
He stepped down in 2020 after weeks of speculation, revealing that he had suffered a relapse of ulcerative colitis. The intestinal disease had led to his resignation in 2007 too.
He was succeeded by close party ally Yoshihide Suga, but was still seen as a powerful figure in Japanese politics.

When was the last time India declared state mourning for a foreign leader . Abe was indeed instrumental in building Indo-Japanese ties.
To answer the question in the geopolitical thread, I think this was a crime of opportunity . Japan has been struggling with economic issues due to COVID and their lockdown measures. I can report firsthand in a few weeks but they’re desperate to open up again . They still don’t allow tourist arrivals but at least family visas are available - I got one .
The act itself doesn’t really make sense - LDP are coasting to a win in the elections and Abe retired from PMship two years ago - ironically for health reasons. He would have survived had he stayed PM and benefited from the security it comes with.

As per the crime of opportunity concept - I still cant wrap my head around something like this happening in Japan.
For a Japan novice like me, that country had always been the "boring monotonous political" landscape compared to the much more colorful US, India, Cheen.
Abe was definitely pulling Japan slowly to a stronger position in terms of defense capabilities - I can see why the amm cheeni was gloating over his passing.

Generous tributes paid to Shinzo Abe from Narendra Modi:
My Friend, Abe San
My Friend, Abe San
Shinzo Abe - an outstanding leader of Japan, a towering global statesman, and a great champion of India-Japan friendship - is not among us anymore. Japan and the world have lost a great visionary. And, I have lost a dear friend.
I first met him in 2007, during my visit to Japan as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Right from that first meeting, our friendship went beyond the trappings of office and the shackles of official protocol.
Among his greatest gifts to us and his most enduring legacy, and one for which the world will always be indebted, is his foresight in recognising the changing tides and gathering storm of our time and his leadership in responding to it. Long before others, he, in his seminal speech to the Indian Parliament in 2007, laid the ground for the emergence of the Indo Pacific region as a contemporary political, strategic and economic reality - a region that will also shape the world in this century.
The Quad, the ASEAN-led forums, the Indo Pacific Oceans Initiative, the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure all benefited from his contributions. Quietly and without fanfare, and overcoming hesitation at home and scepticism abroad, he transformed Japan’s strategic engagement, including in defence, connectivity, infrastructure and sustainability, across the Indo Pacific region. For that, the region is more optimistic about its destiny and the world more confident about its future.

Shinzo Abe's Death Celebrated in China: 'Open Champagne!'
JACK DUTTON ON 7/8/22
Chinese nationalists on social media used phrases including "Open Champagne!" to celebrate the death of Japan's former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, who was assassinated Friday morning while giving a campaign speech in support of a candidate in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
Abe, 67, was shot at twice on Friday approximately 11:30 a.m. local time in the city of Nara, close to Kyoto, while he was giving a campaign speech for Kei Sato, a fellow Liberal Democratic Party member and a national election candidate.
Abe was rushed to hospital in a helicopter and later died at 5.03 p.m, bleeding to death from two wounds on the right side of his neck, a doctor told a televised news conference.

There is much anti-Japanese sentiment in China, some of it rooted in nationalist conflict and previous wars. For example, it was a Chinese nationalist government that led China through the second Sino-Japanese War against Japan between 1937 and 1945. Many Chinese still feel acrimony towards the Japanese for the war crimes committed during that conflict, and for seizing swathes of mainland China.
Chinese artist and activist Badiucao tweeted on Friday that some Chinese nationalists were celebrating Abe's death.
"Chinese nationalists on Weibo have began to celebrate that Japan's ex PM Abe is shot during campaign today. they call the attacker "hero" and send death wish to Abe," Badiucao tweeted.
The artist cited a post from WeChat, the popular social media platform in China, that said: "i hope it is the current Japanese PM (got shot)... and Korean one too." According to the activist's posts, others on the platform were joking about eating an extra bowl of rice to celebrate Abe's death.

Japan is a high trust, shame-based culture. Everyone’s trusted to do the right thing - going so far as to let 4-5 year old kids walk or take the subway to school alone . Shame based in the sense that no one wants to be ostracized. But then there are outliers like this guy . Of course there no excuse for lack of security procedures but the kind of low key political rallies seen in the imagery is pretty normal . Walked past such impromptu speeches there before.Ambar wrote:Pathetic security ! Re: India and Japan: News and Discussion
Couple of points:
1) There can be no effective control of weapon creation, if one man can make it, another can unmake and make it again; all talk of gun control is simply a substitute of control or monopoly of violence by "legalised and regulated" institutions. In the older days when weapon technology was limited to swords, bows, arrows, spears, shields, horses, the common peasant was as much secure as his reigning monarch, the only difference being of numbers, if people disliked someone's ruling, they could always band together and reduce the number differential. Even when rudiments such as gunpowder and guns were introduced, smithing could always be undertaken to make such artefacts; the institutions win due to mass production and access to better funded, wider applications, but they are not all pervasive, chokes on supply chain and critical infrastructure can create disproportionate repercussions.
The issue is chiefly of trust and broken societal contract.

2) Shinzo Abe stated on numerous occasions for Japanese people to go forth and multiply, but their falling TFR (may indicate an uptake in recent years due to migration of weeaboos) indicate that he was not heeded to; considering a cause and effect analysis it can be seen that this was a sort of governmental push to include vast sections of society that are simply not interested in participating whatsoever which is becoming endemic in the west as well, combined with the westerners NO family together policy, it is an interesting trend. Lone men with no stakes in society are ever dissatisfied, bringing them into the fold is the government's job, they go about it in a ham-handed manner by thinking only of taxation and numbers, not of complete integration; there is no easy fix and requires changes in societal behaviour.

Are these 50paise people so poor that an extra bowl of rice is a once in a lifetime occasion or am I missing something?According to the activist's posts, others on the platform were joking about eating an extra bowl of rice to celebrate Abe's death.

Japan in Shock After Fatal Shooting of Former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo
Japan is reeling after the assassination of its longest-serving leader while on the campaign trail for the upcoming election.

.....
World leaders reacted to the attack on social media. U.S. President Joe Biden, Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also expressed their condolences.
In a televised press conference Prime Minister Kishida Fumio condemned the attack as “barbaric and malicious,” saying it “cannot be tolerated.”
Abe’s former foreign minister, Kono Taro, tweeted that the “LDP will not be deterred by violence and will continue its election campaign until the end.”
The attack has sparked anxiety over public safety as residents head to the polls over the weekend. There are also concerns over the lack of protection for political candidates on the campaign trail. In Japan security at campaign events is virtually non-existent – as are incidents of gun violence, especially compared to the United States. Abe is believed to have had a security detail present, which failed to prevent the attack.
Abe holds the title as Japan’s longest-serving prime minister. After eight consecutive years in the post, he stepped down in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, citing worsening health in August 2020. Abe was succeeded first by close ally Suga Yoshihide and then by Kishida in October last year. Abe has remained a prominent member of the ruling LDP and held considerable influence, even after his resignation.
Under Abe’s leadership between 2012 and 2020, Japan’s unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in decades. He is also credited for adding some 2 million women to the labor force and used the funds from the consumption tax hike to expand daycare facilities and cover widening gaps in Japan’s social security system.
