The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Executive Board meeting to approve the release of the tranche for Pakistan is expected to take place before August 20, Daily Dawn reported.

The board's approval is a prerequisite for the release of the seventh and eighth tranches of a $6 billion loan programme for Pakistan — that the country had signed with the IMF in 2019. The disbursement of the latest tranches, which amount to $1.7 billion have been pending since earlier this year after the lender objected to Pakistan's economic policies.

LAHORE/SUKKUR: India has released 2,00,000 cusecs of flood water in Ravi, which will reach Pakistan on Monday, as the Flood Forecasting Division (FFC) has apprehended extreme high flood in the river, ARY News reported.

Pakistan’s Indus Water Commissioner has contacted with his Indian counterpart and sought detail of the water released in Ravi in a letter. “How much water will reach in Pakistan in the water flow released in Ravi river,” Pakistan’s water commissioner asked.

According to sources, no response yet received of Pakistan’s letter from India.

Contrary to the government’s claims that poliovirus was restricted to southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts, environmental samples from seven cities have returned positive, indicating the presence of the virus in major urban centres.

The virus was also reported in sewage samples collected from Islamabad and Lahore after a gap of 16 months. Both cities were declared polio-free in March 2021.

An official of the National Institute of Health (NIH), on condition of anonymity, said samples from Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Bannu, Nowshera and Swat were found positive.

Following the announcement by the KE about a technical fault in one of the generating units of its Bin Qasim plant, citizens across the city, who continue to face loadshedding, believe that the fault will exacerbate the situation.

The KE on Tuesday said that the first unit of its Bin Qasim Power Station-3 (BQPS-III) was currently offline following a fault identified during a test being conducted as part of the plant’s commissioning, with an estimated restoration time of eight to 10 weeks.

Pakistan May Have Leaked Zawahiri's Location In Lieu Of IMF Deal: Analyst Makes Big Claim

In a new twist to Ayman al-Zawahiri's killing, Germany-based Afghan analyst Fahim Sadat told Republic TV that Pakistan may have leaked the Al Qaeda chief's location to the US. According to him, the Pakistani security establishment might have helped the US in lieu of the approval of the IMF deal. Coupled with political instability, Pakistan is facing a huge economic crisis with the currency in a free fall, depletion of foreign exchange reserves and inflation. The house in which Zawahiri was staying reportedly belonged to a top aide of Sirajuddin Haqqani who is believed to have close ties with Rawalpindi.

Analyst Fahim Sadat remarked, "I think this shouldn't be strange but will put serious doubts on the Taliban's claim that they are trying to cut their ties with terrorist groups and Afghanistan soil will not be used against any other country by any other groups. This is going to have a long-term impact on the claim of the Taliban. There was already a gap and mistrust between the Taliban and the international community and this will further strengthen that. What is strange is that the Taliban first denied this attack which means with coordination or no coordination, the Americans with over- the-horizon operations are active in Afghanistan."

"If this incident has not happened in coordination with the Taliban, I can also not reject the assumption that looking at the economic hardship of Pakistan, the Pakistani military establishment may have coordinated the whereabouts of Zawahiri with the Americans in return for America's help on IMF and other economic hardships that they are facing. This is already complicated. This will hugely damage the Taliban's claim for legitimacy and recognition by the international community," he added.

Lieutenant General Asif Ghafoor has been appointed as the Commander XII Corps (Quetta), replacing Lt Gen Sarfraz Ali, who was martyred in a helicopter crash, the military's media affairs wing said.
Lt Gen Ghafoor has previously served as the ISPR head.
In his new role, he is "replacing Lieutenant General Sarfraz Ali ... who embraced shahadat (martyrdom) in a helicopter crash due to bad weather during flood relief operations in Lasbela, Balochistan, on 1 August 2022 (Monday)," the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement issued late on Wednesday night.

WASHINGTON: The American drone that eliminated Al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri in Kabul was possibly laun­ched from an airbase in Kyrgyzstan, some US media reports claimed on Wednesday.
The reports claimed that the attack was launched from Ganci Airbase, a US transit facility at Manas in northern Kyrgyzstan.
According to the US Department of Defence, Ganci is a former American military base in Kyrgyzstan, near the Bishkek international airport. It was operated by the US Air Force, which handed it over to the Kyrgyz military in June 2014.
The US administration, however, is still refusing to disclose where the drone take-off from and what route it used. The Department of Defence only issued a brief statement, saying: “Zawahiri was killed in an over-the-horizon operation in downtown Kabul, where he was residing as a guest of the Taliban. The house was struck by two Hellfires missiles in a precision, counterterrorism operation at 6:18am Kabul time on Sunday.”
The National Public Radio (NPR), America’s largest radio news network, noted that US officials were not saying where they launched the drone from, “but the US no longer has any military bases in the immediate region, suggesting the aircraft may have flown a long distance before reaching its target”.
Michael Kugelman, a scholar of South Asian affairs at the Wilson Center, Washington, noted that the drone strike has generated “lots of discussion” in the US on “Pakistan’s possible role” in the raid.
“I wouldn’t overstate its role, but also would take with some grains of salt the contention that there was no role at all.”
Mr Kugelman focused his attention on two possible forms of support: airspace and intelligence. “The geography doesn’t lie. If this drone was launched from a US base in the Gulf, it wouldn’t be able to fly over Iran. Flying over Central Asia is circuitous and hard to pull off if you’re undertaking a rapid operation,” he wrote.
“This leaves the Pakistani airspace as the most desirable option for intelligence support and US officials have indicated the planning and surveillance for this operation took months.”

Though establishment cannot financially sponsor Imran for the scale that is needed to run elections and dharna's he did, what establishment did was to bring moneybags like Jahangir Tarin to him and assured these moneybags that Imran is dim he is just the front face and establishment will make sure that other things falls in place. Without establishments support no one would have joined Dimran. 18 Initial years of his political career are a proof of this.

What establishment did for him starting 2012-2013
- Bring the moneybags
- Make electable politicians switch to him
- Bring Judiciary to taken down Nawaz Sharif and help Imran with the cases where he could have been disqualified (ex. Sadiq and amin despite having an illegitimate kid).

Pak-India ‘backchannel’ talks hit dead end

ISLAMABAD: Backchannel contacts between Pakistan and India have met a dead end as both sides have struggled to agree on the moves that may pave the way for slow but gradual improvement in the relationship.

“Talks have been going on but have reached a point where things aren’t moving anywhere,” a source familiar with the development said.

There has been a desire from both the sides to break the impasse but the issue is how to move forward from this point onwards, the source explained.

What has slowed down the process was the political uncertainty in Pakistan. There was a glimmer of hope for a possible thaw in the relationship following the change of government in Pakistan in April. What spurred the optimism was that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the first leaders to congratulate Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The sources said backchannel contacts that began during the PTI government’s tenure picked up pace in April after the change of government. But despite “intense” backchannel diplomacy, the two sides were not willing to concede an inch on their respective issues.

Pakistan is keen that India must take steps with regards to Kashmir before any process of normalisation of ties begins. New Delhi, however, is more interested in Islamabad first exploring the option of resuming bilateral trade. {Hain, this doesn't make sense. Wasn't it TSP who were crying about trade not resuming due to hindootva agenda of Mudi?}

But India instead of offering any concessions on Kashmir hardened its stance. Some of the developments including efforts to hold G-20 summit-related events in Srinagar did not go down well with Pakistan.

The friction in the relationship prevented Pakistani and Indian foreign ministers from interacting with each other at the recent meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Tashkent.

India, the sources said, is inclined to the re-engagement but reluctant to offer something that would help Pakistan resume the dialogue.

“Our policy is clear. We want to engage with everyone, including India,” a senior government member said, while requesting anonymity. The government functionary, however, was skeptical if the hardline Modi government could show any flexibility on the Kashmir issue.

The sources said that Western powers, including the United States and the UK, were also pushing for defusing tensions and opening some formal channels of communications between the two South Asian neighbours.

4 soldiers martyred in North Waziristan suicide attack: ISPR

Four soldiers were martyred in a suicide blast at a military convoy in the Mir Ali area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district, the military’s media affairs wing said on Tuesday.

The martyred soldiers have been identified as 22-year-old Lance Naik Shahzaib, a resident of Mansehra, 26-year-old Lance Naik Sajjad, hailing from Ghizer, 25-year-old sepoy Umair, a resident of Kohat and 30-year-old sepoy Khurram, a resident of Narowal.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), intelligence agencies have commenced investigations to find out details about the suicide bomber who carried out the attack and his handlers and facilitators.

Senior TTP leader Omar Khalid Khorasani killed in Afghanistan, Taliban spokesperson confirms

Senior Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Omar Khalid Khorasani and two others members of the banned outfit were killed in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan on Monday, according to Taliban spokesman Muhamamad Khorasani.

Omar's real name was Abdul Wali Mohmand and he previously headed the TTP in the Mohmand Agency bordering Afghanistan.

In a statement today, TTP officials said that the car carrying Omar came under attack in the eastern Paktika province near the Barmal district on Sunday evening.

They urged the Taliban government in Afghanistan to investigate the incident and unearth “spies” who could be responsible for the death of senior TTP leaders.

Apart from Omar, the two other men killed in the attack have been identified as Mufti Hassan and Hafiz Dawlat Khan. They were among several TTP leaders who had joined the outlawed Daesh in 2014.

It is pertinent to mention here that Omar was a member of the TTP team involved in negotiations with Pakistani officials, Pashtoon jirgas and recently with religious scholars over the past few weeks.

Omar and a majority of the TTP members from Mohmand agency had parted ways with the TTP and formed a splinter faction Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat Ahrar (TTP-JA) in 2014.

The then TTP chief Maulvi Fazalullah had sacked him after he had announced the formation of his own group Jamaat ul Ahrar, which comprised of almost all the Taliban leaders from the Mohmad Agency. Omar had accused the TTP leadership of deviating from the outfit's ideology.

Islamabad: Pakistan is bartering and bargaining information about High-Value Targets as the country has its own domestic compulsions like financial challenges or pressure from anti-terrorism watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF), media reports said.
Last week, a US drone targeted Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri and as per the reports the intel about the FBI most wanted terrorist was provided by Pakistan. However, it is not for nothing. There lie Pakistan’s hopes that in times of need US will come to the aid of the nation which is in a deep mess when it comes to its economy.
Zawahiri’s killing is another reminder that just like the killed Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, Pakistan had provided close support to the United States this time as well. Pakistan is known for a “walk-in” selling information proposal about High-Value Targets but one thing is quite clear whenever it has done so, it has always bartered and bargained, reported Islam Khabar.
According to the media portal, Pakistan adopts this kind of tactic mostly under two scenarios. First is if Pakistan is trapped in an economic crisis or if they have pressure from FATF. The second scenario is when they know that the ‘target’ in demand is redundant and obsolete for them.
The only word which can be used for this kind of help to US on the basis of its own self-interests is essentially double-dealing. Pakistan has played out this tactic several times. The country has done this even to escape international pressure like in the case of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, when it held the masterminds of the attack, only to be released later.
