Time for Dar to be appointed caretaker PM. He says he knows how to talk to and handle the IMF...
Yawn - Govt refuses to budge on power tariff hike
Yawn - Govt refuses to budge on power tariff hike
Despite strong opposition from consumers, the power division and the power regulator did not budge from increasing national uniform electricity tariff by up to 26 pc (Rs7.5 per unit) with effect from July 1, 2023 as committed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
At a public hearing presided over by National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) Chairman Tauseef H. Farooqui, trade and industrial bodies, mostly from Karachi, protested over such a massive price hike, saying the industry was already at its last leg of survival and the additional burden would lead to closure of businesses, wipe out export market as products become uncompetitive and add to the employment losses.
The flabbergasted consumer representatives, one after the other, expressed their anger in a language that the Nepra chief had to intervene with repeated requests to convey their feelings in a professional manner and appropriate words.

Paki politicians only talk about the need to end army control when they are out of power. When they are in power they are wholeheartedly in support of the need to maintain army control because without it they would be out of power again. Nawaz is no different. If he comes back he'll be the army's best friend again at least until they find him inconvenient once more.sanman wrote: ↑18 Jul 2023 12:48 It's being said Shehbaz Sharif is stepping down to make way for return of Nawaz Sharif to power. So how are army going to coexist with him? Is there new some understanding reached with Nawaz that he won't try to challenge the military establishment?

In the meanwhile, one hopes that whichever sharif gets back, trade is not resumed, especially via the wagah border

Anju, the Indian mother of two children who travelled to a remote village in Pakistan, married her Facebook friend on Tuesday after converting to Islam and now has a new name Fatima.
The 34-year-old Indian woman was staying at her 29-year-old Pakistani friend Nasrullah’s home in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They became friends on Facebook in 2019.
They tied the knot in a local court of a district and sessions judge amid tight security.

The lady seems mentally disturbed due to childhood abandonment. Grandfather was a Hindu but father converted to Xianity (maybe due to rice bags). The girl was living with maternal uncle since 3 years of age. Was married off in late teens and had a child when she was about 20 years of age. Looks like a woman looking for affection and unfulfilled romantic ambitions (since she did not get parental affection, and got tied in wedlock with kids at an early age when women are still in college). Girls suffering from parental neglect or abuse are prime targets of Jihadis. Her father is openly telling the media that her daughter has mental issues and is stubborn (typical signs of children starved of parental affection in early age).

The Guardian continues to debase itself when it comes to reporting on Pakistan. But then with the so many british Pakistanis ready to let their sensitivities be known, it is understandable cowardice.

Cash-strapped Pakistan approves projects worth billions of dollars to Gulf countries for investment purpose
In a major development, cash-strapped Pakistan has in principle approved 28 projects worth billions of dollars that would be offered to Gulf countries for investment with the long-term objective to reduce reliance on loans and imports. . . . The list of the approved projects suggests that if all the schemes are picked up by countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain, the quantum of investment under the SIFC banner can be greater than the USD 28 billion under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), The Express Tribune reported.

PM Shehbaz opposes Ishaq Dar as interim prime minister
Amjad Mahmood, Syed Irfan Raza, July 31, 2023
• Urges appointment of ‘neutral’ person to lead caretaker set-up
• Defends ‘hybrid regime’; says May 9 riots aimed at removal of army chief
ISLAMABAD / LAHORE: Amid widespread speculations, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday ruled out the appointment of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar as the caretaker prime minister, saying a neutral person would be selected to lead the interim set-up to make upcoming general elections transparent.
The premier, who also heads the PML-N, made these remarks on a Geo News programme, Jirga. The remarks came after rumours that Mr Dar would be appointed as the interim prime minister.
“A neutral person should be appointed to this position so that no one could question the elections’ results,” PM Shehbaz said, agreeing with his coalition partners who favoured a non-partisan politician to lead the caretaker set-up.
According to the PM, the caretaker set-up would be agreed upon after consultation with allied parties, PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif, and the leader of opposition in the National Assembly Raja Riaz.
“I assure you there will be a very efficient interim government at the Centre,” he added.
It may be noted that a bill to empower the caretaker set-up to take policy decisions was recently passed by the parliament. PM Shehbaz said he will dissolve the National Assembly a few days before the expiry of his government’s term on Aug 12, which would allow the ECP to conduct polls within 90 days.

Police suspect Daesh involved in deadly suicide attack on JUI-F Bajaur rally
More than 40 killed and over 100 injured; three suspects taken into custody
Abu Bakr Siddiqi, July 31, 2023
PESHAWAR: Initial investigations show that the terrorist organisation Daesh is behind the suicide attack on Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl's (JUI-F) workers' convention in Bajaur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police said Monday.
At least 43 people were killed and over 130 injured when a suicide bomber set off explosives at the rally on Sunday in the former tribal area, which borders Afghanistan.
Emergency was declared in the hospitals of Bajaur and adjoining areas where most of the injured were taken, said District Police Officer (DPO) Nazir Khan. The critically injured were transported from Bajaur to hospitals in Peshawar by military helicopters.
"We are still investigating and gathering information on the Bajaur blast. The Initial probe shows that banned outfit Daesh was involved," the law enforcers said.
The police added they were gathering details about the suicide bomber, while the bomb disposal squad team was collecting evidence from the site. "CTD personnel are busy in collecting other evidence."
DPO Khan said three suspected people had been taken into custody.

I am not surprised, Gautam.
The attack was on JUI-F, the guy Fazl-ur-Rehman who played a role in supplying men & material to the Al Qaeda, Taliban & the TTP. The guy organized a baiyat ceremony at Peshawar just the day before 9/11 where top TSP Islamist scholars, terror tanzim emirs (and even perhaps some TSPA Generals) took the oath on their blood to protect OBL. It was also attended by the leader of the other JUI-faction (JUI-S used to be led by) 'Maulana Sandwich' Sami-ul-Haq. Now, after the assassination of the Maulana (which still remains mysterious like so many before him like Jinnah, Liaqat Ali Khan, Zia, Benazir et al), the only threat was likely to be Daesh. Unless of course, the TTP decided that he was 'wajib-ul-qatl' for some reason (like how they did away with Col. Imam and Khalid Khwaja of the ISI), but missed the target. Fazl-ur-Rehamn's days may be numbered now.

The nature of the military bureaucracy is state capture and exploitation of talent and resources. What they don’t seem to get is that the talent runs out quickly which leads to economic and social collapse and fire sale of state assets including land.

Yawn - Govt hikes petrol, diesel prices by Rs 19
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday announced a massive hike of Rs19 in petrol and diesel prices, taking them to Rs272.95 and 273.40 per litre, respectively.
He said that the government had checked the “working” of Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) until the late hours of the night.
“The delay in the announcement, the basic reason was that we were looking at if there were ways to reduce it, if there was some leeway,” Dar said. “We all know that the international commitments we have with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding the petroleum levy, if they weren’t there […] then we would’ve announced a smaller increase but everyone knows we have a standby agreement,”
A 17.5 pc increase was announced in the producer price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), as well as a 13.5 pc raise in the LPG consumer sale price for August.

Re: Terroristan - March 31, 2022
It's a rhetorical question. They are subsidizing themselves by borrowing money from their future to pay for their present. Taxation of petroleum is a key feature of any non-OPEC nation, so an economy which doesn't tax petrol is clearly unable to tap into a big source of funds. This will lead to more budgetary deficit for them which will affect their ability to fund meaningful developmental - education, health, poverty alleviation. Which means the country will continue to go down in a tailspin.
Instead if they had raised prices to Indian level of about Rs 350/l and used the difference of Rs 75 for development or to pay down their debt... imagine that

They expect others to provide the funds which have been unfairly deprived/taken from them..be it the expenses they incurred for defeating the soviets in A'stan, participating in the WoT, being a victim of climate change, providing the Islamic ummah with the bomb, <insert your own>, etc etc

So Bakis will reverse evolve going from agriculture and industry to subsistence farming, hunting , cannibalism etc. They will export high skilled trained engineers for projects up to no good like the Colombian one , globally earning valuable foreign exchange to service circular debt that can not be repaid, developing more skilled engineers that can’t be employed in any meaningful way and so on achieving parity with Afghanistan in a few decades and thus becoming the strategic depth on the other side of the Durand line.
But there is hope that if they de- fang themselves in lieu of their fizzle toys they might still attract enough Arab and Sinic money to float around and be a mini-Africa of contract farming, drugs testing, contract manufacture of cheap goods - so all in all they will have enough exploitable labour and land resources to be extracted…

Totally nonsensical idea - India pays Pakistan to vacate pok-gb. One time offer of 50 billion usd. Could be used to ease it’s foreign debt servicing significantly but GHQ will take it and run. Still becomes a US-Arab-IMF colony and denuked completely. Sign agreement with China to allow goods to travel through the territory and gives us access to Central Asia.
