1) The 3 Brahmaputras are the only steam powered frigates/destroyers in the IN. The powerplant is an older design and no doubt requires a very large number of personnel in the engine room. Moving to a Kamorta class propulsion with 4 diesels in lieu of 2 boilers/steam turbines is a good move.
2) The sensor / weapons suite may see an upgrade as well. Perhaps replace 16 Urans with 4 BrahMos, install the VL-SRSAM in lieu of Barak-1. Perhaps even get rid of some older radars.
3) The Indonesians did some interesting experiments with their old Dutch Leanders...diesel propulsion + conversion of the helo hanger to fire VLS Yakhont missiles.
Shows the benefits of having a local design

The P-15A (Kolkata Class) and the P-15B (Visakhapatnam Class) destroyers are coming out at a quicker pace (one a year), than her predecessor ---> P15 (Delhi Class) destroyers which was every two years. Even the upcoming P-17A (Nilgiri Class) frigates are having quicker construction times. A very welcome change from the earlier snail pace our shipyards used to work at, which can be clearly seen in the time gap from the P15 Class to P15A Class (13 years) and from P15A Class to P-15B Class (5 years).

The rumour mill is that four follow-on P-15B (perhaps will be called P-15C ?) destroyers will be ordered, till the keel of the first P-18 NGD (Next Generation Destroyer) is laid. Let's see what happens.
Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 12 April 2021
Rakesh-ji,
The rapid turnover : a result of orders well in time (before the lines run idle) or modular building and better adaptability??
Or a combination of both??

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 12 April 2021
Modular ship building.. currently IN experimenting with much larger modular blocks than before.. the shipyards are also spending more on building on scale.. incl CSL., expect the second carrier to come earlier in as much as 5 years. All the blocks are made simultaneoulsy in different locations with pvt ind participation.

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 12 April 2021
This is a poorly thought out article.
The major driver of warships cost in modern day is no longer the size of the ship. It's the EW and Sensor fit, along with the numbers of weapons that a ship is supposed to carry.
Roughly the cost breakup is as follows.
1) EW, Sensors and weapons fit.
2) Propulsion systems.
3) cost of steel and yard space.
4) Crew Size.
In modern threat environment, even your low end combatants will require 360° phased array radars along with VLS for AAW capabilities.
Especially within the Indian context, where the threat is PRC and TSP combined. Along with the fact that PLAN will have basing rights in TSP. Refueling and crew swap facilities in Sri Lanka.
The threat level in this scenario are going to be so high. That even the "low end frigates", are going to require an EW fit on par with the "high end frigates".
You can get by with 30 cell VLS system instead of 48 cell VLS. On such a smaller ship. But the cost savings are not going to be that much different.

Having said all the above, a case can be made for ships similar to the Russian Gremyashchiy class. But these are not Frigates.

जलमेव यस्य, बलमेव तस्य (The one who controls the sea is all powerful.)
Indian Navy will display its operational prowess and capabilities through an 'Operational Demonstration' covering a spectrum of naval operations by the ships and aircraft at the iconic Sindhudurg Fort on the western seaboard of India on 04 December 2023. The event, hosted by Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, will be witnessed from the Tarkarli beach by senior Centre and State government officials, military dignitaries and the local populace. The event aims to celebrate and glorify our rich maritime history and shed the colonial practices.
Built in the year 1660 by the Maratha Ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Sindhudurg Fort boasts of India’s rich maritime history and also meets the Navy’s requirement to conduct an operational demonstration with its frontline assets.
The Navy Day on 04 December commemorates "Operation Trident", the Indian Navy’s audacious attack on Karachi harbour during the 1971 War. The Op Demo is being organised to celebrate the valour and courage of the personnel and their resolve to achieve the impossible under adverse circumstances. The event will also showcase the Indian Navy's state-of-the-art ships and aircraft to the general public and online viewers through a live telecast.
The event will witness participation of 20 warships along with 40 aircraft comprising MiG 29K and LCA Navy as major attraction along with combat beach reconnaissance and assault demo by the Marine Commandos of the Indian Navy. The other major attractions include performance by the Naval Band, continuity drill and horn pipe dance by the SCC cadets. The event will culminate with illumination of ships at anchorage followed by laser show at Sindhudurg Fort.
This is the first time that the Indian Navy will be organising a mega event which is not taking place at any major naval station. The location of the Sindhudurg Fort is 550 km from Mumbai and about 135 km from naval station at Goa. All out efforts have been made by the Navy along with the State Government and local administration to showcase these events.
Navy Day celebrations are aimed at fostering greater outreach, renewing maritime consciousness amongst our citizens and highlight the Navy’s contributions towards national security.
