https://x.com/livefist/status/1892436691912446034 ---> While HAL focuses on ensuring four leased HJT-36 Yashas trainers quickly yield an IAF order for 85 planes, a light attack version of the Yashas for domestic & export customers could be next.

Yashas: India’s New Light-Attack Fighter

India’s HAL is transforming the HJT-36 Sitara, originally an Intermediate Jet Trainer, into a versatile light-attack fighter aircraft. This bold move could position India as a key player in the global budget combat aircraft market, competing with the likes of Super Tucano and FA-50. Equipped with hardpoints, modern avionics, and precision-guided munitions, the Sitara could serve cost-conscious militaries in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia while doubling as a lead-in fighter trainer. For India, it offers affordable air power for border patrol and counter-insurgency, freeing up advanced jets like Rafale. Despite challenges like engine limitations and certification hurdles, a successful Sitara could boost India’s defense exports and global aerospace influence.

Our designs have been plagued by the desire to keep the aircraft length as small as possible. Happened with the LCA and then with the HJT-36 as well. LCA had to go for the LCA Mk2 to address this lack of fineness ratio and HJT-36 needed years of fixing it's aerodynamic vices finally leading to a substantial increase in the leverage that rudder and stabilizers could bring with the lengthened fuselage.

Any update on the IJT? I tried searching net but all I could get was user trails were happening. But I would like to know a little more, as no news at all is disconcerting. I mean, not even an emergency purchase news is seen! Wonder why!!

HJT‑36 Yashas: How AL‑55E Engine Revives India’s Jet Trainer Program

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has taken a major step in reviving India’s Intermediate Jet Trainer program with the delivery of 18 AL‑55E engines from Russia’s United Engine Corporation (UEC) for the HJT‑36 “Yashas”. Designed to bridge the gap between basic and advanced trainer aircraft, the upgraded HJT‑36 features enhanced avionics, improved aerodynamics, and a modern AL‑55E engine, making it a critical asset for training IAF pilots for 4th and 5th generation fighter jets like the Tejas, Rafale, and AMCA.
