Agni-III to be launched within 48 hours

Postby bharats » 11 Apr 2007 15:02

Highly placed sources in the defence set-up have told TIMES NOW that the government is likely to launch the Agni-III within the next 48-hours. But the decision will be subject to a clearance by the Defence Research and Development Organisation which should come by Wednesday (April 11) night.

DRDO scientist had found that hot exhaust fumes went inside the rocket and burnt cables that led to the malfunction the last time leading to the failure in the test launch. Also, a metal plate in the rocket to stop reverse flow of the exhaust did not work. Agni-III will have a three stage lift-off mechanism and will have a range of 4,000 km.

The Agni-III is the most powerful missile in the Indian arsenal. When ready, it will be able to carry nuclear capable warheads. It is an effective counter to any missile in the region and can hit most parts of China, including Beijing.
The Agni-II has a longer range than the Agni-I and Agni-II, which have ranges of 1500 and 2500 km respectively.

From the above Times Now report

The extended range of 4000 is extremely nice can it be increased even further(5-6000 km)? Does anyone know as to how has this been brought about? More fuel carrying capacity or alternative fuel? I am keeping my fingers crossed and I would offer prasadam in nearby temple (Just incase it helps) if the launch is successful.

Only an old marwadi habit to underplay the cards in hand. And out comes Jack of clubs, while the Queen, King and Ace of club are still in hand.

See Arun_S's post on page 1 to get an idea of what the real range of this baby is.
Note that A3 was supposed to be 2 stage.
If indeed it is 3 stage, the range is far greater.

Nobody will believe the 4000 km for a 3 stage missile. GOI will have to claim that Agni-3 warhead weighs 3 tons.

So now, was the previous test really a failure or validation of 2 stage missile and this the test of 3 stage ICBM?

Frankly I would be surprised given that the previous launch was a failure. Maybe they are counting the warhead as a third stage?

It would be quite interesting to say the least if this were in fact an Agni 3++ (or whatever) given the 123 negotiations with the US.

If its indeed a 3 stage missile as the news report says that it proves that we are ready to walk the whole extra mile , But we need to wait and watch till the Fat Lady sings

I just hope the GOI is not too fussy about releasing the A 3 launch pictures as they have been with recent Dhanush launches .

They're going to have to come up with something similar if this thing is really 3 stages.
Estimates for the primitive North Korean Taepodong-2 (3 stages, liquid fuel) with 500 kg warhead is 10 000 km.

Being used to their own heavy weight stuff they dont believe in three stage lightweight payloads as a deterrent. A heavy model they will believe. Called mirroring in pisko talk.

Guys One thing is for sure, History tells us that for every single ballistic missile that India has developed, we have had deployed pre production models with the services. Hope history repeats itself here too.

I'll vager that the last "Failed" test was a validation of some parameters. Imagine a failed test being declared after the missiles travels a thousand odd kilometres. Gawd any other second - third rate missile possessing nation (much like our neighbours BTW) would go delirious with happiness if something they built flew that far.

Snippets from various news agencies:
"The missile has been re-configured and would be test launched tomorrow morning," top Defence Ministry officials said.

'The exact time will depend on weather conditions and other factors,' an official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

'We are keeping our fingers crossed. We hope the test will proceed smoothly,' the official added....

While Agni-III is capable of reaching strategic targets deep inside China like Beijing and Shanghai, it, however, falls short of being an ICBM (inter-continental ballistic missile) that have ranges over 5,000 km, a scientist pointed out.

Other factors such as location of phoren sattelites, fuel-status of phoren recon planes and UAV's etc.

There is a big dark room in Virginia, at a place we shall not speak of, filled with lots of very, very frustrated and impatient people glued to their TV screens wondering what darn 'shubh muhurat' evil indians are waiting for... Their blood-coffee concentration is above legal already (0.08% +).

Not really. In Wings Of Fire it is very clear that Indian missile tests are linked to the monsoon season. The window is from ~ November to ~ May. As for daily weather related stuff they dont want to skew the bias due to atmoshpehric conditions- wind shear etc. Need nominal performance proofed first.

its all in the controls and thrusters.. what is stopping agni itself doing an agni-pravesh once its reached space? it can decide to be dropped at any logical point on earth., provided the thrusters have enough fuel in them. why not cruise in space and reduce fuel use, and then do the prithvi-gaurav with thrusting for guidance ooooonleee. if it qualifies to IC, then it should be able to cruise around., if the thrust controls are mastered.

am i thinking orthogonal?

WHEELER ISLAND -LAUNCH COMPLEX NO 4- 0230 HRS
-----------------------------------------------------------------
She waited patiently ,on her concrete pedestal. The sky was dark and in the surrounding gloom quite far away pin pricks of light could be seen comming out of the port holes in the recessed extra reinforced concrete bunker.Inside every one was tense and quite except the political class who kept on asking some what irrelevant questions on range and payload and warhead options which the scientists tried to answer as simply as possible ,irritated at the interruption but careful not to annoy the political bosses who after all control the purse strings that may well decide the future projects that are likely to grow out of this test.

The moon reflected of her white painted some what voluptious figure ,tapering off sharply at top where the multiple death cones will some day reside but today just a load of steel and instruments all wired to her demonic brain waiting for the moment to unleash the fury of many storms

She alone knew her destiny and the distance she have to fly to meet the destiny some day.In the distance the the waves of Bay of Bengal kissed the golden shore in awed reverence

Up in the sky more than half a dozen satellites converged on her expected flight path-disappointed went off and came back again trying thier best not to miss this moment of history

Her skin was warm to touch and she wanted a release but still had to wait for that tiny shower of sparks that will transform her from a beautiful picture on a sea shore to incarnation of death itself .

Down in the underground bunkers the checks and rechecks were at least over and all the lights were at last green ,the launch was a go

Some one nodded and some one turned inserted and turned a key in slow motion and numbers started rolling down quickly the automated launch sequen a ce was on.

Out in the corner some ones hand was poised over a red button covered by a hard plastic cover still closed

Inside her ruthless emotionless brain tiny flickers of electricity moved quickly section and she grew impatient by the sceond knowing atleast her time to show herself to the world has come

Far from the shores of bhadrak and marshy crcodile infested bhitarkanika deep inside cheynne mountain and hills of bejing,in the underground basement of islamabad and in the situaition room at downing street eyes were red with sleeplessness but still they could not leave their seat as the infra images of her in moon light filled the flat screens .

Strangely in the country of her birth ,people slept peacefully unaware of the moment of history which will be over in less than 12 minutes

Her brain checked and found her to be in her prime and atlast after a microsecond sent a tiny electric impulse down her spine right to the heavy bottom and a small shower of red hot sparks touched the very core of her existence

The ammonium perchlorate in ploybutadile binder ignited with the embeded aluminium powderin a flash and a sound like suppressed rolling thunder filled the sky the air the ocean and the ground which shook as she kicked the firm ground below with all the savagery she could master and reached for the stars climbing on a solid pillar of fire ,slowly at first and then quickly picking up speed as she decided to roll in and tip over slightly
as she left all sound of her existance with scorn and moved up and up and then like a egoistical beast that she was discarded her heavy bottom and pushed free even faster reaching for the stars

The air was thinner now and she could now really throw her inhibtion to the winds as she aimed for that spot of land far away decided to shed some more clothes which were nothing more than a hinderance anyway. She flew on in an arc light and fast and then tipped over once again as she entered the dense air once again. Her skin glowed an angry red as she was now impatient to find her target turned inwards with a vengnance .As her skin peeled of in layers her brain stayed cool and functional and moved her a wee bit this side and then a wee bit that side and then she came down hard on the object of her desire a concrete cross 10 mtr by 10 mtr in the middle of ocean on a remote island and died in a brilliant flash

Her life lasted all of 12 minutes but that 12 minutes changed the world forever
