Congrats to DRDO scientists! Wonder how many tests they will eventually go in for. Hoping to get more details soon on this test, probably K Subramanyam from Hindu I would guess.

India took a major step forward in its quest to acquire a credible nuclear deterrent against potential adversaries like China when it successfully test fired the Agni-III intermediate range ballistic missile from the Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast.
The Ministry of Defence has now officially confirmed that all parameters of the 15-minute flight of the missile have been successfully validated.

Words cannot express how glad and grateful we are for the DRDO team. This is yet another milestone in improving Indian Security from misadventures of chini. Bravo . This is equal in significance to PokhranII.

hey.. somebody forgetting my poppins...... btw.. as nobody was giving us the dear A-3 during the agonizing wait for launch, I cooked some up based on Arun's line drawings... but looks like warhead for A3 needs some major mods...

Same report on Indiadaily but mentions something about a newer, longer ranged missile and ABM. Are they talking aboit the Dhanush or sagarika sub surface system?

They said its development is driven by the need for a more assured retaliation that can defeat emerging anti-ballistic missile (ABM) defences and counter-measures.
Such capability requires a compact missile that can also carry ABM counter-measures along with a warhead, in a configuration similar to MIRV, albeit with state-of-the-art decoys.

I think this would be right time and place to ask one question!
Obviously to test the range of IRBM scientists need to do full fledged test by launching missile to its full range.
But if its ICBM with the range of 10K or more how scientists will manage to do full fledged test to check the range?? If something goes wrong then it is highly likely it will hit civilians in different country.
Let me know where I am wrong..probably Arun_S would help me..

Agni III test fired successfully
Taking a major leap in missile technology, India today successfully test-fired its most powerful nuclear capable intermediate range ballistic missile Agni-III from the Interim Test Range (ITR) here.
The indigenously developed two stage, all solid fuel, 16 meter long missile weighing 48 tonnes blasted off at 10.52 am from a fixed platform with the help of an auto launcher in the launch complex-4 of the ITR, located about 72 km from here, defence officials said.
The surface to surface missile with a strike range of over 3,000 km and capacity to carry a payload of 1.5 tonnes has the capability to reach even remote Chinese mainland cities of Shanghai and Beijing.
India thus joins a select group of nations to field missiles of inter-continental reach.
"The entire flight path of 15 minutes duration validated all mission objectives," a defence ministry spokesman said.
In the successful Agni III test, the spokesman said Indian scientists had for the first time also validated frontline technology of flex nozzle control system for rocket guidance, specially developed composite propellants and guidance and control with fault tolerant avionics.
The sleek missile vertically roared into the clear sky leaving behind a thick column of white and yellow smoke, eyewitness accounts said.
Fitted with an on-board computer, the missile went upto a distance of 90 km vertically crossing the atmosphere and re-entered into the earth targetting the pre-determined impact point near Car Nicobar island, officials said.
The missile was tracked from ground stations at Dhamra, ITR Balasore, Port Blair and Naval warships in the Indian Ocean.
With the successful test-fire, Agni-III is the missile with the longest reach in South Asia and more powerful than any missile in Pakistan's arsenal. However, China has missiles with a longer reach.
After three postponements, Agni III was first test fired on July 9, 2006, but the missile failed to meet its mission objectives due to cascaded failure of booster flex nozzle controller.
Initially, Indian scientists had planned only three tests, before its induction in 2008. However, DRDO sources said with the failure of maiden test flight, more tests would now be required to prove its robustness.
Though DRDO officials are tightlipped, well informed sources said that Agni III costs about 1/6th of similar missiles developed by western countries.
Amongst the range of Agni missiles, Agni III is the country's first solid fuel missile that is compact and small enough for easy mobility and can be easily packaged for deployment on variety of surface and sub-surface platforms.

inshallah by reducing its payload to a mere 500kg (enough for 1 Tnuke + 1 decoy) a micro-A3 with a shortened 1st stage would be possible perhaps with a 7500km range than 12000km
easier for placement in submarines and permits a smashmouth response
anywhere in asia , europe and oceania from submerged platform in IOR.

The "Agni" should now be renamed as the "Xtasy"! Great,great achievement.Now the ungodly can shiver and shake in their lairs and gnash their teeth at our "big boy".If the Xtasy can be fitted into the hull and launched from the ATV,it would give us a quantum jump in our strategic defence.The rail mobile version is very welcome too and absolutely neccessary as part of the triad.

so panda went ahead and kitted them up with a GLCM.
I figure more advanced GLCMs could be supplied if panda has them ready.
also look for supersonic YJ-8x moskit licensed models/clones PLANAF has
been working on to suddenly appear in PAF inventory once they get the J-10.
the Mirage-III 'haiders' are too old and weak to carry them and F-solah wont
be permitted by unkil.
if they have some leverage on the Yuan SSK eqpt suppliers (propulsion) expect Yuan SSK sales at friendship prices to rat.
