Italian Firm Ponders Launch on India's PSLV
[Aviation Week & Space Technology, 12 Dec 2003]

Italy's Carlo Gavazzi Space is negotiating with the Indian Space Research Organization to launch a 500-kg. Agile satellite into equatorial orbit. Managing Director Lanfranco Zucconi witnessed the Oct. 17 liftoff of India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C5) that placed the 1,360-kg. Resourcesat-1 in Sun-synchronous orbit. For ISRO, the Agile would be its heaviest third-party payload yet. The Italian company is believed to have a $9-million budget for the launch. Meanwhile, ISRO says photographs received from the three cameras on Resourcesat-1 indicate they are working well. The remote-sensing platform has a multispectral high-spatial-resolution camera that provides 5.8-meter resolution over a 23-km. swath; a multispectral imager with a resolution of 23 meters and a swath of 141 km., and the Advanced Wide Field Sensor that produces a 56-meter resolution over a 740-km. swath. It is also multispectral, and can image the surface of the Earth every five days.

India, France Still Working on Climate Satellite for Monsoon Region
[Aviation Week & Space Technology, 12 Dec 2003]

French and Indian officials still hope to save a planned joint mission, MegaTropiques, which would collect critical information on climate change in the monsoon region. India is to provide a microwave sounder called Madras for the project, which would be launched in 2006 if French financing difficulties can be overcome. Officials at the French space agency CNES remain optimistic that a solution can be found. India might resurrect its indigenous Climatesat-1 project if the problem can't be resolved.

India formally joins EU's Galileo satnav system
[Aviation Week & Space Technology, Dec 2003]

India has formally pledged its participation in the European Union's 3.2-billion-euro ($3.9-billion) Galileo satellite navigation system, and will insist on uninterrupted access to signals, according to a government source. As expected, India will pick up a $350-million stake in the project (AW&ST Nov. 10, p. 19). India will be involved in the development and operation of Galileo "on an equal footing," said an Indian official. "It proves that the EU recognizes India's expertise in niche areas of space and IT." Meanwhile, four European teams have submitted bids for the concession company that will manage final deployment and overall operation of the system. They are Finmeccanica, Alcatel Space and Vinci; Eutelsat, Hispasat, Logica and ENA (the Spanish air navigation agency); Inmarsat, EADS Space and Thales; and Germany's OHB with unnamed European partners.
