India's only aging aircraft carrier under repair
[www.chinaview.cn, 12 February 2004]

India's only aircraft carrier, INS Viraat, which is the centerpiece of Indian Navy's western armada, will be unavailable this year because it has been dry-docked for elaborate repairs and a refit at Cochin of south India. The 1959 vintage, 23,900-ton carrier had undergone a life extension as recently as 2001, which was intended to have given ita fresh 10-year lease of life. But it is out of action again. According to Hindustan Times, a leading English newspaper, while acknowledging the limitations imposed in having an aircraft carrier on an 'extended life", the Indian Navy claims that the dry-docking of the Viraat is part of its 'routine preventive maintenance.'

At the same time, it uses the case to press its demand for having at least two carriers. "Viraat is not on this season. This is the reason we want another carrier," a top naval official was quoted as saying. India will not get its second carrier, Admiral Gorshkov, before May 2008. The indigenous air defense ship will take nine years coming. And going by the indications, the aging Viraat needsa lot of nursing, putting a question mark over its reliability. A warship is built to last 25 years. The Viraat is now pushing 45, the paper says.

Aircraft carrier production from 2005
[Times of India, 14 February 2004]

Cochin Shipyard Limited will kick off the production of the Navy's first home-grown aircraft carrier or the air defence ship (ADS) by mid-2005. The ADS project was sanctioned by the government early last year. Talking to Times News Network, Navy's chief of material Vice-Admiral Parvesh Jaitly said, "The ADS is in advanced stages of design and planning. It will be among the Navy's most strategic vessels along with Admiral Gorshkov after 2010." The 37,500-tonne aircraft carrier being developed at a total cost of over Rs 3,000 crore is likely to inducted into the Naval armada sometime in 2012. Admiral Jaitly said the Navy's internal design group was handling the ADS project at this stage but specialists from outside could be involved with the project during the production phase. (Fincantieri has been selected).

India's lone aircraft carrier, INS Viraat, is likely to be replaced by 2010 due to the vessel's extreme age. INS Viraat, which was commissioned in May 1987, completed a major refit at the Cochin Shipyard from 1999 through April 2001. This refit extended the ship's service life until 2010 and included upgrades to the ship's propulsion systems, its radar suite, communications systems, elevator upgrades, and new weapon systems.

Vice Admiral Jaitly, the former controller of Warship Production and Acquisition of the Navy, said the shipment of the Gorshkov complete with its armaments was expected by 2008. He said, "In the post-2010 era, we will have two aircraft carri- ers to pack the punch for the Navy. We will set off the production of a second indigenous aircraft carrier simultaneously." To further enhance its capabilities in the stealth warfare zone, the Navy is ready to commission the last of the three Talwar class frigates supplied by Russia . Admiral Jaitly said, "The induction of the Talwar class is a significant addition to the strike capabilities of the Indian Navy. Tabar, the final unit of this class, is being commissioned in March 2004."
