Air Marshal SK Malik to be Vice Chief of Air Staff
[Hindustan Times, 18 August 2004]
By Man Aman Singh Chhina
Ambala: Air Marshal SK Malik will be the new Vice Chief of Air Staff following the retirement of the present incumbent Air Marshal Michael MacMahon on October 31. The next senior most officer, Air Marshal SP Tyagi who was expected to take over the appointment will instead stay put as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command. Air Marshal Tyagi confirmed that Air Marshal Malik would indeed be taking over as the Vice Chief of Air Staff. He said that official orders to this effect had already been issued by Air Headquarters. Air Marshal Tyagi is widely tipped to succeed Air Chief Marshal S. Krishnaswamy as the next Chief of Air Staff (CAS) of the Indian Air Force. Usually, the officer taking over as the air chief is appointed as Vice Chief to familiarize himself before taking over the office of CAS.
Air Marshal Tyagi was non-committal about his taking over as the next CAS but added that in the event of this taking place he would like to continue in his present assignment till the present chief retires. Air Chief Marshal Krishnaswamy will be retiring from service on December 31 and if Air Marshal Tyagi had taken over as Vice Chief, he would have put in just two months before his elevation. Air Marshal SK Malik is currently serving as AOC-in-C Southern Air Command. He is from the fighter stream and has commanded a MIG-21 squadron and an air base in Pathankot and has served as Air Attache in Russia. He has also served as the Senior Air Staff Officer, South Western Air Command.
