India, Israel to hold joint air exercises
[Hindustan Times, 11 September 2004]
India and Israel have reportedly agreed to hold joint air force exercises. Over the last decade or so, Israel has emerged as a major arms supplier to India. But military exercises between the two are unprecedented. The decision to embark on exercises indicates their intention to go open about their blossoming defence relationship. Significantly, reports suggest that the initiative to hold exercises was taken by India, which has been politically coy in the past about flaunting a dalliance with the Zionist nation. The IAF Chief, Air Chief Marshal S. Krishnaswamy, currently on a visit to Israel, was quoted by the Jerusalem Post as having received a "positive" response from his Israeli counterpart Major General Elyezer Shkedy to his proposal for joint exercises.
"We look forward to exercising with the Israeli Air Force," ACM Krishnaswamy said, while talking of "mutual appreciations and interests." The venue and schedule of the exercises is a matter of detail and convenience, he said. "We can learn from each other in many ways as we are learning from the others," the Air Chief Marshal was quoted as saying. While conveying his enthusiasm for foreign engagements, ACM Krishnaswamy made it clear that India was not dependent upon any nation for its defence preparedness. He also denied reports that India is seeking Israeli satellite photographs of Pakistan's nuclear installations.
