Wasnt this Barkha the same one who covered Kargil ? the war where we made Pukes the fall guys due to our own internal domestic problem ?

A reckless and a failed nation like Pakistan would see benefits in any reckless operation it can launch. Nothing more to lose.

Meanwhile, defence minister calls for emergency high-level meeting.

Isloo, Karachi and Pindi will have to burn for this.
Pakistani military/ISI strategic logic goes like this: Attack India and create a dangerous situation. Run to the US and tell them the situation is fraught with nuclear danger, and the danger can only go away if they make India give Kashmir to them.

Plus, they are institutionally incapable of thinking of alternate strategies. Just look at their response to the domestic upheavals they faced in the last two years--they kept trying the same failed tactics (kill, arrest, intimidate, grin ingratiatingly at the West, repeat) over and over again, and didn't have an alternate strategic framework to make adjustments with what passes for civil society over there. (Granted, it would be very hard to change any strategic framework just like that, even if you are not a corrupt military dictatorship.)

They did this with Kargil. It didnt' quite work. But now they sense a new opportunity with ambiguous statement on Kashmir coming from the US president-elect. They don't have any other strategy on the shelf, so they reach for the same old one, and hope that it will work this time, given different actors in Washington.

In the worst case, they would still have inflicted massive tactical damage on India, who has more and more to lose each day. They on the other hand, have little to lose.

A no-lose decision, if you are a Pakistani. Zardari making nice could have been a feint, or irrelevant wishful blathering by a president who ultimately doesn't control anything of strategic consequence anyway.
Great point of view. If the TSP/ISI is conclusively proven to be behind this; this may be their last stance before disintegrating into smaller mini states, ala Yugoslavia. In which case, India should react...scratch that..MUST react.

Paul Cruickshank NYU Center on Law and Security
Terrorists may be trying to decouple India from strategic alliance with US. Mentions it could be punishing US, UK and other countries for Iraq.

Barbara Star :
Intelligence agencies all over the world looking at this as a game changer. The size, communication, training, co-ordination etc. is very sophisticated. US/UK/Indian and other agencies would have to trace back and see who would have the capability.

Another anchor mentions.. LeT and its violent history. Connects LeT to Al Queda. Say Al Queda would love to distract Pakistan, if LeT were involved. (As if suggesting, Pakistan Army will get off Al Queda and go after somebody else)...

Koli folk being interviewed saying that the boats were piloted away after dropping off the terrorists at the landing point. A 'joint operation' between the LeT and the Pakistan Army if ones bothers to make that distinction.

More NSG troops being ferried to Mumbai.

I won't be surprised if another city is also attacked now taking advantage of the situation in Mumbai.

HT is doing a great service of connecting the India Mujahideen to today's attack. They are doing serious job for the first time. As per HT, they(TSP/ISI) used SIMI to do the side show at Jaipur, HYD, Ahmedabad ect., and after the side shows they performed they did the real dhamaka.

The pigs had money, attacked during the night (instead of the usual morning/evening rush hour bomb attacks). I suspect these are not normal pigs, their plan might have been to shoot a few, set off a few bombs and disappear into the crowds. News reports of not wanting to take hostages also substantiate this. The op probably went downhill when they barricaded themselves into the hotels and it stretched on into the day.

These are not jihadi pigs of the local or international variety. They are the same "mujahiddeen" types who attacked us in Kargil.

Remember there were 2-3 separate cells involved in the 7/7 London attacks. If ISI had taken the effort and $ to do this, I doubt they just went for a one-night effort. Chances are we have another group from the boats ready to attack once this one dies down. Multiple attacks spanning days has exponential impact on panic and will bring the country's economic acitivities to a grinding halt for weeks.

With connections to the political circles, Barkha Dutt can lose common sense in the name of reporting. Vishnu Som has to come into BRF and make an explanation.

BTW, he also claims that Pakistan is equally affected by terror.

Cant the I&B minstry talk to the owners and revoke the TV license for Barkha's barking up the worng tree. And making up info. The Minster is sayng no negotiaitions. Why is she reporting contrary position? Is she trying to undermine the state during hostage situation? Freedom of press is one thing but propoganda is another thing.

So far, I haven't seen anyone commenting on the unique depravity of these terrorists in attacking hospitals. They did this in Gujarat this year, as well.

By boat. In other circumstances, their lack of empathy and vacuous statement would have been hilarious. Now they are even below contempt.

Anyway, latest update on the rediff page ...
12:14 PM: At least four terrorists are holed up in the Taj Hotel where 40 to 50 guests were still trapped, says Major R K Hooda, General Officer Commanding of Maharashtra, Goa [Images] and Gujarat. Two bodies have been brought out of the Taj Hotel and taken away in an ambulance.

11:25 AM: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil has said that there can be 10 to 12 terrorists involved in the terror attack inside Taj Hotel. Five of them have been killed and one of them arrested, he told media persons outside the hotel as security forces prepared to launch an assault to end the terror.

Ramana,

Some of us are intimately aware of the inner goings on in the IB. The IB has quickly established that these are Pakistan LET folks. I will like to say that I remain skeptical of this claim. Sure some of the terrorists may actually be Pakis, no doubt.

It can *NEVER* be a fully foreign operation. The meticulous planning, the targeting of Jewish homes, the ins and outs of the Hotels - all have been studies before by *locals*.

And as in Delhi (Previous Diwali Blasts), we know that when some of the pigs escape, which "localities" they hide in, who provides them food, clothing, shelter, and safety so they can slip away, undetected to fight another day.

Forgive my language, but I can bet both my testimonials that as I write this at least some of the escapees are, at this very moment, hiding in Nagpada, Agripada, Dongri and or near Mohammed. Ali Road. These areas are "no-go" areas for everybody else.

The only difference is that the Terrorists have finally given up on the anonymous method of placing RDX in Dustbins in crowded markets. That was not having the desired results and was not creating mass fear. The poor have to work, they have no choice. Politicians have very tight security around them. That leaves only the movers and shakers (with foreigners among them) as obvious targets. The prognosis, is indeed, grim. Unless there are targeted assassinations of ISI folks, this will keep happening. The ostrich approach can not and will not work.

And I will also say this - not out of graciousness - this is NOT the fault of the police, they did the very best they could, under the circumstances. The rot starts at the top of the GOI administration. They do as they are told.

The media reports that 16 + Policemen are already dead (not counting the casualties of the other security forces). The death toll, when it finally comes out, will be close to 500.
