Re: Terror Attacks in Mumbai - III
Hello,
I have been a long time guest on this board for several years and I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the families of the fallen and to all of India.
India has shown the world the bravery, dignity, and courage of her people. Your forces and even the hotels' staff have shown nothing but valor in your time of crisis. Somthing that the TSP lacks. This will be their destruction, for all they have is hate.
Today and tomorrow I shall stand with India in the face of these barbarians. Jai Hindi!
( MODS please forgive me for being off topic.)

Wajid Hasan, the porki High Commisioner to the UK is live on British tv here claiming these are 'Indian extremists' who carried out the attack to distrupt the peace initiatives which Zardari recently announced.
He also claims the Pakis changed their mind re sending the chief of the isi because of Indias 'mud throwing'.
Its sad that these Pakis are getting so much airtime on the western tv networks and even more so that they seem to be more media savvy than all of our political representatives.

I would like to know what fellow members think as most appropriate action on part of GoI should be? We all know about the desire of ordinary citizens to punish Pakistani establishment (ISI and Army) but what options are available? I meant keeping in mind the current set of non-leaders that we have in New Delhi.
Partial list:
1) Raise lot of dust by claiming that swapping patil out of Home Ministry is earth shattering response and all pakis are fainting right now and are terrified out of their mind.
2) Threaten Pakis if they don't suddenly have mass change of personality for all 150 million of them and become peace loving Buddhist that our congress high command would make us believe they might even ask some other nonperson to resign form cabinet as well!! and let loose another round of petrifying attack of anxiety all over pakiland!!
3) Run to world community with Nth set of irrefutable proof of paki planning and execution of killing hundreds of innocent Indians. Claim see Indians been right all along and told you so once more!! Claim again that pakis are such not a good world citizens and have the so called world leaders make placating soothing noises to our PM like one makes to a pet to pacify.

It makes my blood boil. Not just because the entire operation seem to have been low tech. But because they escaped the clutches of our authorities. How safe can India be??

Mumbai - A sensational revelation has emerged from a terrorist caught alive by Indian troops: The attack on Mumbai's top hotels was meant to be India's Sept 11.
Azam Amir Kasav - some reports have his name as Ajmal Amir Kasab - confessed that part of the plot called for him and his fellow terrorists to carry out a replay of the destruction of Islamabad's Marriott Hotel, in targeting Mumbai's Taj Mahal Hotel.
The Marriott was blown up by militants in September, an attack that killed more than 50 people.
According to a report in The Times of India, Azam said the attacks on the Taj and The Oberoi Trident were aimed to create a 'Sept 11 in India', a reference to the coordinated attacks by Al-Qaeda on the United States in 2001. They involved the crashing of hijacked planes into the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon that left nearly 3,000 people dead.
The confessions of the clean-shaven, fluent English-speaking 21-year-old Pakistani have given investigators a clearer picture of what had happened last Wednesday.
Azam said he was member of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, but the Kashmir- based Pakistani militant group has denied any role in the attacks.
Founded as a guerilla group to fight the Indian army in Kashmir, the group was banned by the Pakistani government after the Sept 11, 2001 attacks, but reportedly continues to enjoy the backing of some Pakistani politicians and security officials.
A native of Faridkot in Pakistan- occupied Kashmir, Azam revealed the names of his fellow terrorists, all Pakistani citizens: Abu Ali, Fahad, Omar, Shoaib, Umer, Abu Akasha, Ismail, Abdul Rahman (Bara) and Abdul Rahman (Chhota).
But the 10 men were apparently not the only ones directly involved: Another group, he claimed, had checked themselves into hotels four days before, waiting with weapons and ammunition they had stockpiled in the rooms.
Months of preparation
The 10 men in Azam's group were chosen well: All were trained in marine warfare and had undergone a special course conducted by the Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Preparations were also detailed, and started early.
Azam and eight others in the team made a reconnaissance trip to Mumbai several months before the attacks, pretending to be Malaysian students. They rented an apartment at Colaba market, near one of their targets, the Nariman House.
The chief planner of the attacks also visited Mumbai a month before to take photographs and film strategic locations, including the hotel layouts.
Returning to Pakistan, the chief plotter trained the group, telling them to 'kill till the last breath'.
Surprisingly, the men did not expect themselves to be suicide terrorists. Azam said they had originally planned to sail back on Thursday - the recruiters had even charted out a return route, stored on a GPS device. Are you f*&^*& kidding me?!!
Getting to India
On the evening of Nov 21, Azam's group set off from an isolated creek in Karachi in a boat. The next day, a large Pakistani vessel with four Pakistanis and crew picked them up, whereupon the group was issued arms and ammunition.
Each man in the assault team was handed six to seven magazines of 50 bullets each, eight hand grenades, one AK-47 assault rifle, an automatic loading revolver, credit cards and a supply of dried fruit. They were, as some media put it, in for the long haul.
A day later, the team came across an Indian-owned trawler, Kuber, which they boarded. They killed four of the fishermen onboard, dumped their bodies into the sea, and forced its skipper Amarjit Singh to sail for India.
The next day, they beheaded the skipper, and one of the gunmen, a trained sailor, took the wheel and headed for the shores of Gujarat, India.
Near Gujarat, the terrorists raised a white flag as two officers of the coast guard approached.
While the officers questioned them, one of the terrorists grappled with one of them, slit his throat and threw his body into the boat. The group then ordered the other officer to help them get to Mumbai.
On Nov 26, the team reached the Mumbai coast.
Four nautical miles out, they were met by three inflatable speedboats. They killed the other coast guard officer, transferred into the speedboats and proceeded to Colaba jetty as dusk settled.
The Kuber was found later with the body of the 30-year-old captain onboard.
At Badhwar Park in Cuffe Parade - just three blocks away from Nariman House - the 10 men got off, stripped off the orange windbreakers they had been wearing and made sure to take out their large, heavy backpacks.
It was there that they were spotted by fisherman Prasan Dhanur, who was preparing his boat, and harbour official Kashinath Patil, 72, who was on duty nearby.
'Where are you going?' Mr Patil asked them. 'What's in your bags?'
The men replied: 'We don't want any attention. Don't bother us.'
Thinking little of it, Mr Dhanur and Mr Patil, who said they did not see the guns hidden in the backpacks, did not call the police, and watched the 10 young men walk away.
Then the carnage started.
Killing spree
On hitting the ground, the 10 men broke up.
Four men headed for the Taj Mahal Hotel, two for The Oberoi Trident, two for Nariman House and two - Azam and Ismail - for the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus by taxi.
At the railway station, Azam and his colleague opened fire, targeting Caucasian tourists while trying to spare Muslims.
The two gunmen also destroyed the CCTV control room, throwing grenades into it.
It was here that Azam was photographed, dressed in light-grey combat trousers and sneakers, a rucksack on his back, toting his AK-47.
According to one security expert, the way he carried the assault rifle revealed months of training.
The two men left the main hall of the railway station littered with bodies and pools of blood, then moved on to Metro Cinema and then to the Girgaum Chowpatty area in a stolen Skoda.
It was there that their plans started to unravel.
Capture
At the Girgaum Chowpatty area, Azam and Ismail were intercepted by anti-terror troops from the Gamdevi police station, and they ended up trading shots.
Azam managed to shoot dead assistant police inspector Tukaram Umbale, while one of them also gunned down anti-terror squad chief Hemant Karkare.
Ismail, however, was eventually killed, while Azam himself was shot in the hand. Pretending to be dead, he fell, and the two men were taken to Nair Hospital.
But police soon spotted him breathing and quickly evacuated the hospital's casualty ward, and brought in the anti-terror squad to interrogate him.
At first, Azam remained tight-lipped, but the sight of Ismail's mutilated body broke his resolve.
Pleading with medical staff to save his life, he said: 'I do not want to die. Please put me on saline.'
The bullet in his hand was removed, and after his condition had stabilised, Azam was moved to another location on Thursday for more interrogation.
Reports, however, say that the grilling at the hospital had been so intense that at one point, he pleaded with the police and medical staff to kill him.
He said: 'Now, I don't want to live.'

sometimes situations like these helps us to understand how important others are to us and we to them. A couple canceled their divorce which got cleared after getting caught in one of the hotels.
Seems both were there with their daughter when hell broke loose , they three stayed put together and decided at the end of it against the divorce

Thats because our diplomatic corps have no idea what they are supposed to be saying. There is no clear signal coming from New Delhi. Pakistan on other hand, partly thanks to useless allegations and premature leaks made largely by low level officials in India, know the intel India has. So they are going on a diplomatic offensive. All their wheels are in motion while we are doing a cabinet reshuffle. Colossal failure on every single front so far.sunnyP wrote:Wajid Hasan, the porki High Commisioner to the UK is live on British tv here claiming these are 'Indian extremists' who carried out the attack to distrupt the peace initiatives which Zardari recently announced.

Have these two brave souls been IDed? even they are unsung(though unsuccessful) heroes.Near Gujarat, the terrorists raised a white flag as two officers of the coast guard approached.
While the officers questioned them, one of the terrorists grappled with one of them, slit his throat and threw his body into the boat. The group then ordered the other officer to help them get to Mumbai.

The report is silent on the status of the second CG officer. What happened to him after he was forced to escort the scum till the Mumbai coastline?
Re: Terror Attacks in Mumbai - III
Apparently, even after so much of criticism within his own party, Shivraj Patil simply said "I will abide by CWC decision" rather than "owning any moral responsibility" as the spinmasters are putting it out.
Both Lalu & Amar Singh seem to be saying that Patil should have resigned earlier. They all want a scapegoat now to save their own skin from angry people.

Re: Terror Attacks in Mumbai - III
agree with part that terrorists could have been caught before they started their attack but disagree with the part the attack was low tech. These terrorists did not suddenly get up one fine day and said let's go to india and kill some americans, britons, jews and indians(in that order) and get a ticket to jannat. This attack seems to have been planned since many months with the best trainers who specialize in urban guerilla warfare being used to train these 10 persons without which they could not have held out this long. and the targets have been choosen very carefully, particularly the nariman house which housed the jewish couple. when the first reports emerged that they were terrorists in that house and they had fired at the nearby petrol station not many people in mumbai knew that the house belonged to a jewish couple. many had guessed that the house was choosen as a random target. it was only latter that the real reason(to kill the jewish couple) came to light.Mathew G wrote:Great article. Re: Terror Attacks in Mumbai - III
Lets see your desired action No. 1) Break Diplomatic ties with TSP. Well not go towards addressing the real target should be i.e, ISI and Army, In fact the ISI and Army would love that to happen. Beside we have to make it so that more and more friction and heat is generated between iTSP goverment Vs its Army and ISI, whichever way we can. Action No. 2) Suspend all links: Yes that is a minimal start of response from GoI. Action No. 3) Why wait for another episode at LOC?? we must have a ladger running to 100s of pages by now filled in most painstakingly complied list of all the violations by Pakis at LOC. And as to tell pakis whats coming thats like puting our forces to more of a disadvantage!!! why would we want to do that??manjgu wrote:patni... good question.... my take would be break diplo ties.. suspend all links.. and prepare for the next infiltration at LOC to turn the heat on in POK as a response... use the time to do some preparations... and also some action on Bangladesh border to do a pilot of the strategy ..and also tell pakis what is coming.
I think whats needed is to find out which ever way we can play TSP government against its Army and ISI. Send series of demarche and make it very very hard for TSP govt. to shield TSP army. Go after financial assets of all the heads of ISI, past and present and Paki generals. Make it very hard for brainless paki abdul to feel an iota of pride for any sort of leader!! discredit them all as must spectacularly as we can! I think that very doable heck maybe we can even use some of our DDM for that!! Ensure that pakis really feel all doom and gloom and constant fear from unpredictability from India!

from the reports of karachi training, PN seems to be have almost developed a "naval razakar/mujahid course module" rather than mission specific training.
they were taught how to attach explosives to enemy naval vessels, lay mines in coastal areas and so on.
perhaps this is how they seek to offset naval inferiority.

We should have a massive tiranga draping the whole building. Where the terrorists wanted to see rubble they see the Indian flag flying proudly.
Also the Chabad house should be covered by Indian and Israeli flags.

I had the privilige to attend a gathering of serving and retired officers of a particular regiment today.
I am a civilian. But let me tell you what the General who is the Colonel of the Regiment said in his opening speech.
He asked for a silence, in honor of the dead in Mumbai. And now I quote what brought a lump to my throat:
"And especially, and particularly in honour of 14 uniformed personnel who died in the line of duty, protecting those who could not defend themselves. May the almighty give peace to the souls of these brave men, comrades in arms, all."
Note. Not 14 armymen. Not 14 policemen. 14 comrades in arms.
You could hear a pin drop in the silence that followed.
I am so proud of our armed forces. This is why I write out against the various attempts to drive a wedge between them and the rest of the govt. This is why I write against attempts to tar them with a variety of brushes. This is why I protest, even when there is a chorus of backbiting voices quetioning them, trying to take them down, asking why they should be paid one penny more.
They are simply the best of us.

Its unfortunate that media is returning to "back to normal" from "how much patience" kind of approach. May be Bush knows india better, we are over resilient and tolerant.
Anyway, i guess this will be kind of strategy approached by GOI:
1)Release a final investigation report along with common findings from previous attacks.Send it to countries highlighting points so that even an idiot can figure out as common threats.
2)Tell US/UK/EUROPE/RUSSIA/Other economic partners of Pak to impose economic sanctions. Ask them to block all trade ties and if they revolt, simply tell them they have only one choice. Either they can have ties with india or pak. If their minister will be wise, they will choose india.
3) Launch a PR on international media to create an environment in favor of india. If the babu can't think beyond domain, rope in prasoon joshi
4)Start with a naval blockade of arabian sea. Nothing goes in and out without our permission.

I just heard from a senior IAF source that the defence chiefs took a very firm position with the PM saying that they might face a rebellion within the armed forces if the government goes on with its anti-military propaganda and policies.
It is a dangerous situation with a very unstable government. At the heart of the problem is Sonia Gandhi's unconstitutional position-- as super-prime minister but without accountability.
