Does it mean that our agencies are able to crack Garmin GSM transmissions but need Unkils help only for the GPS data?
We had handed over the recovered Garmin to America for forensic analysis to retrieve data from the phone...

Re: Mumbai Terrorist Attack-News stories and timeline
Guru logs may already know here but just in case...
I have Garmin GPS (ordinary one for car), after the last trip I made, I attached it to my PC and was just "looking" at various files
one (current.gpx) interested me, copied to my computer, took a little look ( using hex editor and later checked out some technical sites) and lo and behold I could see the whole trip (every path I took, how fast I went on each stretch, where/when (and how long) I stopped for coffee etc..) I actually loaded it (and used a conversion program from net) to google map and saw the whole trip...
It was not documented in the manual, but fairly easy to get at the data... so if the GPS receiver is in physical possession, one may find everywhere (since the last trip reset) the GPS has been (and when too) (even older data could be mined even if it is "over-written" without too much technical know-how)
(BTW, in my old Magellan , I was able to copy/run dvix movies.. and it really required very little hacking)

Kasab's trial put off, work on court yet to end
The trial of lone surviving gunman in the Mumbai [Images] terror attack case, Mohammed Amir Ajmal Kasab [Images], scheduled to begin in the premises of Arthur Road central jail on Monday, has been put off by a week as the construction of the special court is not yet over.
"The construction of court's slab is still on and the work is expected to be completed in six to seven days", special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told PTI.

‘No info if Pak proceeding with probe into Mumbai terror attack’
New Delhi (PTI): Questioning Pakistan's sincerity in stamping out terror, India on Thursday said it has no information whether Islamabad has proceeded with the probe into the Mumbai terror attack or allowed FBI to conduct the investigation.
"If Pakistan is sincere about stamping out terror and bringing to book the perpetrators of Mumbai attack, Pakistan should act promptly on the cogent and compelling material that has been given by India.
"So far, MHA has no information that Pakistan's probe agencies have proceeded with the investigation or that Pakistan has allowed an external agency (like FBI) to investigate the crimes," the Union Home Ministry said in its report for March released on Thursday.
It said that after the handing over 401-page documents containing the answers to the 30 questions raised by Pakistan on the dossier of evidence given by India in January 2009, "Pakistan has now no excuse to decline to accept responsibility to take the investigations forward."

Weapons purchased without conducting field tests or evaluating the competitive technologies
MUMBAI: Ill-planned efforts to upgrade the counter-terrorism capabilities of the Mumbai Police may have led to the acquisition of outdated and inappropriate weapons, highly placed government sources told The Hindu.
Last month, the police placed orders for four new weapons without conducting field trials to determine their effectiveness in local conditions or evaluating the competing technologies.
The police planners selected the Colt M4 5.56-millimetre carbine for assault roles, the Brügger & Thomet sub-compact MP9 for close-protection duties, the Smith & Wesson Military and Police 9-millimetre pistol as a personal side-arm and the M107 50-calibre Special Application Rifle.
But experts in the National Security Guards and the Army told The Hindu that the choices made were less than transparent.
For example, the United States military special forces are replacing the Colt M4s with new-generation European-made weapons. And the state-of-the-art MP9 is intended to protect VIPs in environments where it is inappropriate to display guns—a responsibility the Mumbai Police does not have.
The M107 SAR, a lethal weapon designed to penetrate armour and bullet-proof glass, has been selected despite the risk of collateral damage and the fact that the Mumbai Police have no range on which personnel could be trained in its use.
Opaque committee
Highly placed police sources said the weapons were chosen by a committee comprising Police Commissioner Hasan Gaffur, Additional Commissioner of Police (Protection) Vinay Khargaonkar and Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Barwe.
Off the record, Mumbai Police officials said the force chose to bypass testing and competitive evaluation procedures because of the urgent need for new weapons.
Mr. Gaffur did not respond to phone calls and a text message seeking information on how the weapons systems were chosen.
Notably, the committee did not hold consultations with the Maharashtra Police and the National Security Guards (NSG), which have primary responsibility for counter-terrorism roles in Mumbai.
Force One
On April 2, the Maharashtra government passed orders creating Force One, a 350-man crack special weapons and tactics formation modelled on the National Security Guards. According to the order, Force One, than the Mumbai Police, will have the primary responsibility of counter-terrorism operations in the city—making it possible the expensive weapons the committee ordered will never be used.
Later this year, the NSG will begin operations from a new 25-acre facility in the city’s Kalina area. The NSG personnel in Kalina will be equipped with much of the special equipment the Mumbai Police had ordered, including the M107 SAR and the Brügger & Thomet MP9.
Union Home Ministry officials in New Delhi, who granted permission to the Mumbai Police to import the new equipment last month, declined to comment on the controversy. “It is our job to act as a facilitator of modernisation and not to sit in judgment on what equipment best meets the needs of a particular state. While we may have our concerns, we do not wish to be cast as spoilers,” a senior official said.
Does the Indian Army have the M107 SAR? Not likely.
Re: Mumbai Terrorist Attack-News stories and timeline
This is news to me. All I knew was NSG has found acres of land somewhere in Kolkata to start its operations there. So they have finally decided Mumbai apart from Manesar & Kolkata. So the fourth one will be porbably silicon city.ramana wrote: Later this year, the NSG will begin operations from a new 25-acre facility in the city’s Kalina area. Excerpt of portion of interview of Asif Zardari dealing with the Islamic terrorist attack on Mumbai:
President Asif Ali Zardari replies to questions from The Independent
Pakistan’s embattled leader tells Andrew Buncombe what the US should be doing to help him tackle the extremist menace
Wednesday, 8 April 2009 ………………………
India says that Pakistan is not doing enough to assist in the investigation into the Mumbai attacks. How is Pakistan helping? How is Pakistan 's own investigation progressing?
I think the Indian government is not dissatisfied with the level of our cooperation. We have offered to help, and we have helped. We have made substantial arrests of people within groups that may have been involved in the Mumbai attacks. But we need cooperation from India to build the case for effective prosecution of these accused in our courts. Many of the extremists are the same people that conduct acts of terrorism within our own country. Mumbai was attacked and we condemn it. But let us remember that every day Pakistan is attacked by terrorists. They destroyed our Marriott hotel in Islamabad and killed over 50 people. We will cooperate with all nations including our neighbours in identifying and pursuing terrorists wherever and whoever they are. We will prosecute them and we will punish them upon conviction. Remember, this is OUR war. Our children and women are dying, and hundreds of our soldiers have been killed. Pakistan above all nations on earth is in the trenches of the war against these fanatics and terrorists. Our very existence is at stake.
Is there any news about the nine other militants, whose bodies are still in the mortuary in Mumbai. Is Pakistan ready to accept they are Pakistanis - as the Indian authorities allege?
Our investigation into the Mumbai attacks is continuing. Some of these terrorists may in fact have been born in Pakistan. But we believe that this operation was international, with significant support from within India itself. .............

Woman claiming to be Kasab's mom approaches Mumbai police
All sorts of loons seem to be walking over the place. Expect Pak to catch this point and start jumping up and down!!he woman, who appeared to be in her forties, went to the Citizen Facilitation Centre of the police headquarters in south Mumbai and demanded to meet Kasab, who is presently lodged in the Arthur Road jail of the city.
The woman spoke with a Punjabi accent and was dressed in traditional attire. She wanted to meet the head of the Crime Branch and said she had come to meet him since she was Kasab's mother, the officer said.
The lady claimed that Kasab had been kidnapped from her custody when he was a child and asked for a DNA test to be done on her to verify her claim.
However, officials sent her off without allowing her to enter the complex but did not record her antecedents, "doubting her mental stability".

Pak seeks more info on Mumbai to proceed further in probe
Islamabad, Apr 13 (PTI) Pakistan today formally asked India to provide further information and clarifications regarding the Mumbai attacks to enable its authorities to "proceed further" in their investigation into the terrorist assault that killed nearly 180 people.
India's acting High Commissioner Manpreet Vohra was called to the foreign ministry, where the Director General (South Asia) handed over a document "seeking further clarifications (and) evidence from the government of India," said a statement from the Foreign Office spokesman.
The clarifications and evidence are needed for "the ongoing investigations in Pakistan relating to the Mumbai terror attacks," it said.
"The information being sought from India is in the spirit of cooperation with Indian authorities and with a view to enabling the relevant authorities in Pakistan to proceed further in the matter," the statement said.
The statement said Pakistan had also requested replies to some queries it had raised earlier and to which India had not yet responded. It did not give details about these queries.
Pakistan said it was hopeful that "Indian authorities will provide the information requested as soon as possible". PTI

Is such a big operation possible without inside sleeper cells?with significant support from within India itself.
Ansari (the guy caught for Varanasi blasts and supposed to have done recce of Mumbai) was Indian. The entire planning and heading was Paki but surely, a few footsoldiers (OWGs) would have been Indian...
IMHO, of course.
Re: Mumbai Terrorist Attack-News stories and timeline
Local Indian support and involvement of some Indians, still does not absolve Pakistan of terrorism, especially of the cross-border variety. In fact, these Indian sleeper cells have been created, nurtured and kept ready by Pakistan for such an involvement which makes the Pakistani crime even worse. Besides planning, direction, motivation, training and ideological brainwashing, the Pakistanis were the ones who killed more than 170 persons and wounded and traumatized so many hundreds more. They hijacked an Indian fishing trawler and killed people on board. They killed people from a dozen different countries. Pakistan is deep into $hit here.sum wrote:Is such a big operation possible without inside sleeper cells?with significant support from within India itself.

hasn't GoI headed by "Sher-e-Punjab" (in the words of Rahul baba) made a mockery of our response?
The daily tit-for-tat (Paki saying no proof, GoI saying enough proof) is making it sound like two kids squabbling which is what Pak/Unkil want.
Really couldn't find what $hit Pak is in given there has been no price extracted for their brazenness in Mumbai (other than a few B $$ thrown by Unkil), "No action is also action" mantra of BR gurus notwithstanding...

Kasab's mother to come to India to visit him

Mumbai/Jangipur(WB), Apr 14 (PTI) The mother of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman in the Mumbai terror attack case, is coming to India to meet him, as the stage is set for the start of the trial of the Pakistani national in Mumbai tomorrow.
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee referred to the visit of Kasab's mother while stressing that Pakistan should not delay investigations on the pretext of clarifications, a day after Islamabad sought more specific information from New Delhi on its probe into the Mumbai attacks.
Kasab is currently lodged in a high security central prison in Arthur road in Mumbai.
Mukherjee told reporters in Jangipur in West Bengal it was a reality that many people were killed in the Mumbai attacks, one terrorist had been arrested and that he had made certain confessions. His mother was also coming to Mumbai to meet him, he said.
"These are the realities. These are the facts. If somebody wants to evade and avoid these facts, what can we do?" he asked.
"The matter should not be delayed on this or that issue, or on this or that clarification. We are prepared to give them any information that they want, provided we have the information," Mukherjee said. PTI

well pakistan can always send fake mom of kasab so that his dna never matches with that of the pakistani woman.in this case i feel that the mumbai ATS dept who r investigating this case r the stupidest of the police officers that they turned away the 1st woman claiming to be mom of culprit of such a high profile case.they gonna end same as they did in malegaon case.y isnt CBI probing this case.

On eve of trial, 26/11 breakthrough in Europe
60-day global covert operation by Indian intelligence agencies leads to Pak Lashkar operative’s detention in Europe
Pakistan: New suspect arrested over Mumbai attackShahid Jamil Riaz, a key Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT) operative who handled financial transactions and was among the core group of 26/11 conspirators, has been detained in a European country, top officials in the Ministry of Home Affairs have told Hindustan Times.
Interior ministry chief Rehman Malik said on Monday that Shahid Jamil Riaz was arrested in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi.
Riaz is alleged to have maintained financial accounts and helped to plan the November attack, which killed around 170 people in India's commercial capital.

So as expected there was a Barkha special on Kasab tonight (just finished watching it). Among penalists (a Pakistani woman was there too) was TOI editor Sabina (who was killed in Mumbai attacks)'s husband Shantanu. He said that his son told him that he wants to meet Kasab and that he has forgiven Kasab and that we should move on. Towards the end Barkha almost came to tears.
I respect Mr.Shantanu's views but why did NDTV not call for example relatives of Mumbai policemen who were killed by terrorists or the people who were killed at CST station? I mean someone from "aam aadmi" category.

Re: Mumbai Terrorist Attack-News stories and timeline
Kasab may be held alone in a high security cell but in court he seems to be freely mingling with Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmad Shaikh.
I strongly suspect that he is being coached by Ansari and Shaikh, who in turn are maybe being fed instructions from outside through their visitors in prison and this explains his growing confidence and his increasingly escalating demands for a paki lawyer, newspapers etc.

Kasab talked to Fahim a few times, in spite of Judge Tahiliani telling him not to talk to the co-accused. Fahim also signaled Kasab to stop by putting his finger on his lips, but the latter refused to stop. Finally, Fahim was told to shift and Sabauddin was made to sit next to Kasab.

When Judge Tahiliani told Kasab that Anjali Waghmare [Images] will no longer represent him and he will get a new lawyer; Kasab intervened to say that he needed a Pakistani lawyer.
Judge Tahiliani replied, "This is not possible. India's law does not permit it. Moreover, we conveyed your message to the Pakistani authorities but there was no response from the Pakistan government. I am not going to wait for the Pakistan government's decision."
He further observed, "We need to give a fair trial to accused no.1 Kasab. It is vital that a lawyer be appointed who can handle a case of this magnitude properly and with due diligence."
Judge Tahiliani assured Kasab, "We will help you legally in whatever way we can."
Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told the court, "Fortunately or unfortunately, he cannot get one (Pakistani lawyer) because there is no reply from the Pakistan government and there is no communication from them."
When Kasab urged the court to "try once more", the judge conceded, "Okay, we will try again." He then asked Nikam to follow up on the matter.
Kasab also requested that he be allowed to read newspapers, but Nikam retorted, "You can buy a newspaper with your own money."
"How can he have his own money?" queried Judge Tahiliani.
Kasab intervened to say, "When I was arrested, I had lots of money, which the police seized and didn't give back."
"You cannot touch that money because the police have seized it," the judge replied.
