Nuclear Analysts Propose "Minimal Deterrence" Force Numbering 500 Warheads
The existing nuclear posture has the U.S. military embracing "counterforce" targeting -- in other words, going after an enemy's nuclear force, other military targets and national leadership...Instead, the new report advocates limiting U.S. nuclear weapon targeting to a potential adversary's national infrastructure and selected industrial facilities.

Cleanup Resumes at California Nuclear Weapons Research Lab
Groundwater and soil have been contaminated with tritium, uranium-238, the high explosive compounds HMX and RDX, nitrate, perchlorate, solvents and other volatile organic compounds. The primary health threat is drinking contaminated groundwater.

The blog post also provides links to explanations provided by TEPCO for the damages observed after the seismic and fire (latesrt of which occurred in a warehouse on April 11) events. Obviously the Japanese can quite easily afford to forego 8.2 GW of electricity generation over a prolonged period while playing nuclear safety politics.

Iran's UN envoy complains against Israel
Iran's ambassador to the UN filed a complaint with the Security Council against Israel on Tuesday, claiming that the country plans to attack the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities.

Tooele landfill already accepting depleted uranium
The Utah Radiation Control Board heard Tuesday that 49 tons of "DU," as it's often called, has been taken to EnergySolutions Inc.'s specialized landfill in Tooele County since the site opened in 1988.

Nuclear reuse initiative scrapped
"The Department has already decided not to continue the domestic GNEP program of the last administration," said DOE deputy press secretary Jen Stutsman in a statement Wednesday to Nuclear Engineering International magazine. "The long-term fuel cycle research and development program will continue, but not the near-term deployment of recycling facilities or fast reactors."
