I wish the first indian nuclear sub named as

INS Sergey Georgiyevich Gorshko -in honor of the admiral of fleet who was responsible for Indian submarine arm in the first place

and the second one as

INS KANHOJI ANGRE

who pioneered the concept of offensive marine deployment with fast ships

The news of the acquisition of the 45,400-ton Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov takes me back to the early sixties when the legendry Chief of the Soviet Navy, after whom it is named, first visited India soon after the arrival of the Soviet-built submarines at Vishakhapatnam. I was the liaison officer for the Soviet specialists lodged in a prestigious seaside hotel. A special bullet proof car was flown in from Hyderabad during the week-long visit. The leader of the specialists' team used to meet the Soviet Naval Chief every morning. On the second morning of the arrival of the Soviet team I was also asked to join the delegation at breakfast.

Admiral Gorshkov with his 70 medal ribbons stitched on his duck-white jacket looked resplendent. The VIPs seated on the table included the Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Mediterranean fleet, the Far East fleet based at Vladivostok and the Black Sea fleet. They were to visit new sites for a modern repair yard. The Soviet Naval Chief, known for his hard work, efficiency and vision, was the first to start his breakfast. He finished it in 10 minutes while the rest were still having their first course. Suddenly he got up and said, "Gentlemen, let's go." Most of the rest, with their napkins falling beneath the table, got up with a jerk and joined the exit!
Admiral Sergei Georgievich Gorshkov

In the afternoon, Gorshkov used to prefer juice of whole unpeeled kinnows or maltas and fresh coconut water sipped through a straw stick. He was a good-humoured gentleman and talked about superiority of Soviet-built missile boats even in the presence of an American lady with two Siamese cats staying in the adjoining suite during those days of the Cold War. One evening, the two Siamese cats entered his bedroom and started chasing each other on his double bed. Gorshkov took the intrusion sportingly and even invited the American lady, one Mrs Simpson, for a cup of coffee and requested her to rein in her wild tigers.

I also saw Admiral Gorshkov when he visited India again in 1972 when he was briefed about the exceptionally successful role played by the Soviet missile boats during the bombardment of the Karachi harbour in 1971. A local state minister embarrassed us all by addressing Admiral Gorshkov as Marshal Grechko, confusing him for the Soviet Defence Minister. On his retirement, the Soviet government renamed their latest aircraft carrier 'Baku' as 'Admiral Gorshkov'. The imposing aircraft carrier is a symbol of our naval strength and traditional Indo-Soviet goodwill. It is thrilling indeed for me to describe its high strike capabilities to my grandchildren residing abroad and also to tell them about the man after whom it is named!
should we not be big hearted enough to respect Him - by the way the charlie class chakra was transfered to India because of his personal intervention -in case you did not know -shankarosky

But the largest share of credit for laying the foundation for Indo- Russian naval cooperation belongs to Admiral Gorshkov. He intervened adroitly at every impasse. His calibrated release of larger, better, and more modern ships, submarines and aircraft were not only in step with the larger objectives of the of Indo-Russian political, economic and defence cooperation but also in step with his growing confidence that the Indian Navy would cope with whatever Russia gave".

It's a rapid reaction team of the state police which is usually deployed on VIP protection duties. They operate as 4-6 man units to counter armed assault against VIPs and are meant to counter-attack effectively against aggressors using the weaponry at their disposal. Must have been deployed for Sonia Gandhi's visit to Mumbai- I'm sure they aren't used for the CM's security.

The SPG has similar specialised teams which are deployed for the PM's security. I believe the Andhra Pradesh CM also has a 4 man squad of police commandos/Greyhounds who are equipped with heavy weapons.

How about the efforts of so many unnamed Engineers, Scientists who have toiled silently to make this happen. Gorshkov was for arming India for strategic reasons. No country in the right mind would name their first ATV after someone from anoter country. This is the Indian Navy..Wh we could have named our first Aircraft carrier after Mountbaten..or some other British..even from the PR angle, it's such an insulting suggestion. I was more than a bit shocked at the suggeesion in the first place itself..

undoubtedly Adm Gorshkov's contribution to IN was unique and deserves to be recognized but naming something as important as the ATV after him is a bit too much, especially when IN doesn't name ships after recent personalities, discounting the very few exceptions.

perhaps some dept of the various shore establishments which has had some russki connection can be named after him.

IN should setup a massive naval base in A&N and name it INS Gorshkov. It would be ideally placed to monitor the SEA area and the straits.

INS vikramaditya is already named after him and world will call it by its original name then is there any need to name something else on his name?

named after him by russians so that doesn't translate into recognising his contribution to India.

Russia had insisted that the Admiral Gorshkov carrier continue to be named as admiral Gorshkov even in IN service, since the carrier was gifted to India for $1 or free. India did not agree to this proposal, instead choosing Vikramaditya. ( I think all future IN Carriers will have names begining with V - Vishal, Vaibhav, apart form Vikrant and Viraat)

Is'nt this ATV supposed to be more of a tech demo? With the real ones coming right behind?

Statue or statueS? Either way they will be tech demos for the drag these politicians create in real life on the people of the nation.

Also, isn't the first Indian air craft carrier named Vikrant?

How about naming the ATV for our fallen heroes - Capt. Vikram Batra comes to mind. Or after Capt Saurabh Kalia whose mutilation is an affront and personal insult to all Indians? Maybe the ATV will avenge that.

what happened to my post? Did it get deleted.

Vivek
As I sated in my earlier post, which got removed by someone. ATV will be named after Gandhi-Nehru Khandaan. We can't see beyond them. Even better we should name ATV after Morarji Desai.. :P

Before Vikram Batra there were many who showed gallantry and valor like Maj Somnath Sharma, Abdul Hamid, Arun Khetrapal, Maj Hoshiar Singh, Maj Shaitan Singh, Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon, or someone from navy.

Naming something as iconic and potentially controversial hardware such as a nuclear sub after an Individual is not a good idea.
It should have a name that has the required mystique, and splendor to it.

Chakra, chitra, sagarika are just fine. Lets have suggestions along these lines - one with the letter 'c' and another with the letter 's'. Since I think that the Akulas will be named with the letter "C" and the ATVs with the letters "S".
Eg:
1. Chakra
2. Chitra
3. Chaitanya
4. Chetan
5. Chandan (The one who will distribute kamal pushps over a large distance  )
6. Chandraki
7. Chitralekha
8. Chitragandha

1. Sagarika
2. Sagarmanthan
3. Saravati - river
4. Savarna - daughter of the ocean
5. Shaila - stone / mountain
6. Samudra

The Carriers:
1. Viraat
2. Vikrant
3. Vikramaditya
4. Vishal
5. Vaibhav
6. Varun
7. Vajramani
8. Vasuman - born of fire

'But that was not considered feasible. So we are planning the event a few days ahead of that, depending on the PM's schedule.'
I have an eerie feeling they will end naming it after Rajiv Gandhi(PM visiting, no designation for the vessel given till now all seem like a build up). It would be a shame to have the most potent Indian vessel named after an impotent Nehru scion.

Has any Indian ship been named after a contemporary person ? Most ships dont have the name of people, rather than just geography and objects (Brahmaputra, Kukhri etc). The only ships named after people were named after historical figures (Vikramaditya). The tradition bound navy is likely to name it after some Indian river or city or some historical figure. Since Charlie-class was named Chakra and since the project's name is ATV (and there is a speculation it is based on Akula), expect a river, city, mountain or weapon starting with a "A".

Two silly questions
1. How do I add a 'smiley' in my post? I can see them on the left of the 'post a reply' panel, but I am not sure how to include it in my post
2. How do I make the URL associated with a quote in my post to simply say 'link'?
When I place the mouse over the 'URL' button, it seems to indicate it is possible to do it, but I have had no success.
