14-year prison sentence for SMS joke on Pakistani president

It would seem that in Pakistan, there is nothing you need to watch out for more than making a joke about President Asif Ali Zardari by SMS (Short Messaging Service). If you mistakenly, or just for fun, share with a friend one of the hundreds of derisory jokes about the leader floating around electronically, you could get a 14-year prison sentence.

Pakistan's interior minister Rehman Malik announced last week that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has been tasked to trace SMS (or text messages) and e-mails that "slander the political leadership of the country" under the vague Cyber Crimes Act.
In addition to facing up to 14 years in the jail, violators could have their property seized, Malik said, adding that the government would seek Interpol assistance in deporting foreign offenders.

But many jokes hint that Zardari still acts as "Mr 10 percent" - a label referring to the percentage he would allegedly receive in kickbacks in the 1990s during the two terms as prime minister spent by his assassinated wife, Benazir Bhutto.

One such joke portrays a school for demons at roll call. All the demons report for class, except one named Zardari. When the demon teacher asks where Zardari is, a student replies that he has "gone to rob Pakistan".

"We now draft the text in such a way that Zardari's name is not mentioned and yet everyone who receives it knows the joke is about Zardari," laughed Bashir.

"We are not running some organised political campaign against Zardari, but we cannot stop writing about him," he said. "You know, he is such a funny character."

That is why it is still unclear about the plans and operation as well as capabilities of SUPARCO and its space facilities. Due to failure of space launch, Russia offered Saudia Arabia to developed another satellite instead the Arabsat was interested in SUPARCO {Such typical arap behavior. Sharm }. The Arabsat and SUPARCO signed an agreement. The Badr-6 satellite is currently underdeveloped and the satellite is expected to launch in the late of 2009.

Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan also added that" Pakistan has very robust IRBMs which can launch geostationary orbiting satellites. All Pakistan has to do is to erase Delhi or Kolkota from the target and point it towards the sky". India, Iran and Pakistan are racing towards space. Judging from Pakistan’s ballistic missile technology, it can be said that Pakistan Government and Suparco might just be waiting for the right moment to test Pakistan’s first satellite launch vehicle. SUPARCO scientists and engineers working at Pakistan Aeronautical Complex have developed the ultra-electronic systems and tubulance engine components.

At first, SUPARCO decided to send its first astronaut in space, would be from Pakistan Air Force General. SUPARCO-NASA also made sure that the astronaut will have strong background in scientfic-mathematical experience while surving in Pakistan Air Force. Namira Salim, a Paris-based Pakistani artist who has made her mark on the international scene as a talented and internationally accomplished artist with a strong commitment to the arts and humanity, has been selected as an astronaut to go into space in the Virgin Galactic Space Ship in 2008. Tariq Azeem said that Pakistani women have potential to make waves in all spheres of life and Namira Salim is one of them who will set a new direction by venturing into space. He said the concept of enlightened moderation given by the president and the idea to make Pakistan an energy corridor of the region as spelled out by the prime minister are the hard facts, which “we need to comprehend".
