Low presence in terms of those who register, log in and post. At any given time there are dozens of "guests" who may be from anywhere.

In general it is difficult for anyone to survive for long on these forums if you have opinions that are greatly at variance from those of most people on here.

Yes I am on quite few other forums. But most of the posters on some of them are amateurs.
.
My point was that most of the discussions on BR are unanimous, and in symphony.
Though the level of intellect of the posters and the knowledge in the posts is way better than in any other forum I have seen, but I think the Mission of BR will be better accomplished if we can tune our first opinions, on the basis of the replies we can get from the nationals, upon whom those first opinions are based.
.
MODS can always lock any puki member from jumping in Pak Benis Dhaga.
.
I mean let them give privileges to post only on certain threads on which it would be beneficial to have their opinions. Which can prevent their obstruction to other threads on which their knick-pick is not needed.
.
Just my opinion.

2.6% BR forum visitors are from pakland. After adding Non-resident pukis, the figure of total puki lurkers must be around 5-10%.

I wish! we wouldn't have to warn/ban so many people if that was the case! :D
No, we have disagreement but one thing where we are unanimous is that we share the love for Bharat. Our opinions on how things should be done may differ, but the aims are the same.

Dear Admins/Moderators,

I writing this in the backdrop of the current discussion on partition.

We all know that Indian history, especially the past 1000 years, is full of religious conflicts and even a cursory study of a meaningful historical event is bound to bring religious angle. No analysis would be complete and intellectually honest if it does not include how different ideologies contradicted with each other leading to the cataclysmic outcomes that this nation has to live thru.

The very idea of “Partitioning India on the basis of religion” should have solved the religious tension once and for all. However we all have seen and lived thru communal riots almost on a yearly basis in Independent India. One can try to attribute these communal riots to many other social and political motivations but one cannot ignore the underlying communal tension in these painful events.
While I am addressing your total post, I have highlighted the interesting issues.

The thread is on Partition per se. What is the connection with post Partition communal tensions and why should that have to be discussed?

Is the thread's aim to discuss religion and the infirmities?

The religious dynamics of the past 1000 years is well known. It does not require recall and even if it does (in some people's perception) it has to be in context and not brought out for breast beating, lament or as a J'accuse.

This thread is also not a dirge.

Words like 'intellectual honest' though impressive, it does not cut ice.
The Partition was made on the premise that one specific community cannot coexist with the other (Please note that there were other religions too on this side) if that specific community is not in majority. It is not the issue of all communities, but of a specific community.

All post-partition communal tensions involved that specific community with very few exceptions.

I request you to recollect what I have said. I was open to correct myself and delete my post if proper reasoning was given. An impartial reader would clearly see where/who was breast beating
I agree with the common wisdom that it would be nearly impossible to moderate any discussion in the realm of religious-dynamics-of-Indian-history on a open forum like BRF. But then we cannot discuss any historical event that really matters to Indian social, strategic, and geo-political interests. This is same thought process that removed such references from our school text books and we know how it impacted the national consciousness.
That is your view.

There are other views too.

Look at where Pakistan has landed itself by involving everything to religion!
That is the point I was making. There are other views too. Why we are suppressing some views?

Pakistan has landed where it landed because of its ideology. There are other nations on the face of earth who are religious-centric and are doing just fine. Pakistan's case shouldn't make someone to put all religions/ideologies in the same basket.
At the same time I recognize the perceived or real intolerance in some posts. I too am a culprit of doing it. But the point I would like to make is, we will be doing ourselves and our beloved nation a disservice by not discussing anything controversial in the fear of hurting others and/or ourselves. If the objective of BRF is to discuss all aspects of Indian strategic environment then we cannot ignore topics of importance, however unpleasant and controversial they are.

We must find a way to take collective responsibility in having a respectful but honest discussion. Really appreciate some thought leadership in that direction.

Warm regards,
RamaY
One is not wary of addressing controversial or unpleasant issues.

But it has to be in context.

In fact, quite a few threads are thriving on controversies and unpleasantness.
Unpleasantness to whom? As long as it is towards certain posters it is tolerated. But if it touches some holy cows, it is becoming brest beating. Let's leave this here. Lets observe the posters for the next month and revisit this issue.

One suggestion I have is: Just delete any OT post. Without exception and without commentary. People will get the message. See if you can set the forum configuration so that the deleted post goes in the posters "IN" box. So they can contemplate on it and see why their post is deleted.

For example: If a comment on BT was deleted as soon as it was posted, there wouldn't be any response, inviting further rebuttals.

Regards,

If storage is such a problem as some members here point out to be, can we avoid having threads like the "india in the eyes of chinese' thread where a single postor has been posting pages and pages of pretty large images?

I had also posted this on the Newbie corner, but no reply. I really want to know about the costs of indegeneous military equipment vis-a-vis imports

Can anyone tell me if there is a thread for equipment costs and comparisons here.

For example, I would want to compare the cost of MBRLs in addition to capabilities to see how effective Pinaka really is.

Similarly costs of tanks / artillery / ICVs / Guns and Howitzers/ small arms etc.

More importantly, costs of raising a new division / brigade / battalion / company / etc.

I was wondering if it is a good idea to have a "BRF Predictions Watch" or "Monitoring BRF Predictions". It will be a thread to just list the predictions BRFites and other gurus make. There should be no discussion just listing by members. For example if I see somebody predicting that China will attack India in Fall 2009; then I could go to the thread and create a link to that post; and write a brief on it. In addition, gurus could walk in and post their predictions. All discussions, reasons and elaborations will be confined to appropriate threads.

Examples:
Prediction: China will attack India in Fall or Winter of 2009.
Member(s): XXXX
Prediction Date: August 2009.
Effect: October-December 2009.

Prediction: India will conduct nuclear tests
Member(s): XXXX
Prediction Date: August 2009.
Effect: October 2009.

Prediction: India will sign CTBT
Member(s): XXXX
Prediction Date: August 2009.
Effect: November 2009.

Prediction: Pakistan will break/dissolve
Member(s): XXXX
Prediction Date: August 2009.
Effect: December 2009.

I wouldn't. Its too much of an effort.

Besides, if someone posts something in a language other than english, would the mods please instruct them to post a translated version in english too? I remember Ramana saying something on these lines in nukkad iirc.

The "new post" button is very confusing for a new member. IMHO "new thread" is more appropriate title for the button.
IIRC this issue was also brought up sometime back by another member.

The gloom is largely self-induced, and may have largely political party roots. During the period 1998-2004, as India changed from a semi-broke, dissed, outcast "rogue" nation that had just "obstructed" the CTBT and refused to sign up for Carbon reductions on the Global Warming scam, and soared to be described as the next SuperPower, if you read websites dominated by enthusiasts of the Opposition parties you would have seen not just gloom and doom, but explicit calls for foreign invasion etc.

During that time, BRF was quite active, because ppl here had no difficulty meshing their nationalism and pride with their party/religious preferences.

Since 2004 there is this "gloom and doom". Several ppl who were staunch nationalists have now started discovering that they were wrong all along - there is no nuclear deterrent, no Air Force, no Army, no Navy, no economic boom, no independence in foreign policy, and basically NOTHING to be proud of. More, they now articulate that democracy is, well, less than it was cracked up to be because the voters are too stupid to elect the "right" party, and the "right"party is swiftly doing "soosai demos" inside their own highest councils, the "leaders" describing each other as traitors on a daily basis. The idea of a secular govt, the primary distinguishing feature between a modern democracy and a medieval bigoto-terroristocracy, is now claimed widely on the forum to be a really bad one, and many here seem to be wistfully looking at the wonders of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan for inspiration. During 1998-2004, even through the dark days of 2002, those pushing this line were systematically kicked out. No longer.

So my point is that if you start a "Bojitive Neuj Yindoostan" thread, it will be swiftly engulfed by :(( :(( :(( :(( from ppl with mostly politico-bigot motives, who are absolutely DETERMINED to "expose" the Corrupt and Traitorous Nature of All Except Themselves. No mod will have enough time to do the banning needed to maintain order, or to put up with the even louder   :(( :((  that follows.

If you would like to point out the positives, find the :(( :(( and counter it. It's sure easy to find - it's all over the forum.

JMT. Cheers
But I agree with you 400% that there is way too much :(( on the forum, except that I believe that this is the "raisin dieter" of those members here.

I want to address N^3 here.
If I report a post based on what I see as possibly offensive language used by a poster, how does that translate into me being warned? If the forum mods don't believe that the poster is trolling, they can allow the poster in question to continue on the forum.

But why warn the person who intimated the mods? The logic doesn't seem right here.

N^3 is attributing motives to me where none existed.

N^3 I am waiting for a reason here.

I accept Gagan's explanation, since he didn't intend any motive - the warning will be retracted ASAP, and my apologies to Gagan.

I did want to say that I strongly disagreed with Gagan's report, but saw no way to do that in the "post report" response process to say that. Beyond that, yes, I do appreciate people reporting posts that they feel cross the line, and they should be able to do that without earning a warning unless they keep doing it as a habit or to try to get other postors out of an argument.

OTOH, reporting without some clear reasons is not a good thing either, and in this case, I saw no basis for a report.

Anyway, there should be some way of communicating a "no, I see nothing at all here, don't try to get a sincere postor in trouble, why are you doing this?" without issuing a warning. Please let me know how to retract that warning. Thanks, and my apologies again to Gagan.

The other issues with what led to the post that was reported, are unfortunate, but that is what I saw there. No error in that, I'm afraid.

Hi

I wanted to know about the courses related to strategy, defence affairs, international affairs, etc that are being currently offered in India (and maybe abroad also - if online) in different colleges/universities. Is there any thread already for this? Can this warrant a new thread?
