Geelani helps police to nab top Hizb militant
Spin by PTI with headlines.
Tailing pro-Pakistani separtist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani helped Jammu and Kashmir Police in nabbing the most dreaded Hizbul Mujahideen militant Abdul Aziz Dar alias General Moosa from Srinagar city today.

Dar, popularly known as Gen Moosa among the separatists, had been on the run since last year after he was found actively involved in anti-national agitations and later allegedly indulged in liaising between Geelani and Hizbul Mujahideen, sources said.

Arrested twice in 1990's when he was the divisional commander of banned Hizbul Mujahideen, Dar was released by the courts after which he was coordinating with Geelani and carrying out his orders, they said.

it won't be nice at all. discrediting him in the eyes of KMs won't be advisable IMHO.

Geelani was sending KM boys to haqqani run madressa in pakistan while he was still working for state govt. How on earth this guy is still able to roam around free is beyong my understanding. Why cant we put him in place where he wont able to tell diffrence between night & day. This guy alone is responsible for countless innocent death in kashmir. It is just amazing how tolerant we are to people like geelani who is by all means a terrorist. He order murder & rape of family members who he accuse to be pro-India,and those who wanted to keep the fabric of kashmiryat alive.

Geelani has been useful in the recent past. He seems to suffer from the foot-in-the-mouth disease which has been tactically beneficial to us. I think we still have that discussion on this very thread. Please check.

Geelani is like a spent force as far as the kashmiri terrorists and pakistan's vision of kashmir is concerned. The fact is that he is alive on GoI's stipends and untouched so far because people like him serve a very useful purpose.

They prevent new leadership from arising, and they are not much use to pakistan's machinations. As long as they are kept free and at the government's mercy, their insignificance is jarringly visible to all. Last he was heard getting his heart treatment at AIIMS at sarkari kharch.

Not just a useful idiot, but a very very useful idiot  .

Geelani is a poisonous snake, and has been breeding groups of poisonous snake's for decades in kashmir. He isnt useful to anyone let alone GOI,so why use him as a tool while we can make an example out of him so next generation of terrorist would dare twice to keep this tamasha alive.

When geelani rat finally dies he will be call martyr, why give him such an opportunity?

Just realised that yesterday was the anniversary of Indian troops landing in Srinagar in 1947 in the famous dakota airlift. Was there any commemoration of the event, by the armed forces or the govt ?

In every Army station, it is celebrated as the Infantry Day.

Bangalore celebrated its "Infantry Day" at the Parachute Regiment Training Centre (PRTC here). Station Commander of K&K Sub-Area Brig. P.S Ravindranath SM inaugurated the event. Infantry Day marks this event.

sorry, disagree. it was a few foot-in-mouth comments by geelani that finally managed to take the wind out of the azadi movement that had a roy so enthused.

Those baying for geelani to meet his 72 need to consider this.
He is better off meeting the 72 on a warm bed when each passing day he is more insignificant - the people will mourn him and then forget him, he is getting more forgetable as it is these days.

This is preferable than meeting his 72 in a blaze of glory, where he will have a second coming as a martyr.

J&K is cooling off, no sense in re-igniting things there politically for some time.

PM to inaugurate new Railway line in Kashmir today

Baramullah, Oct 28 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will inaugurate Anantnag-Qadigund Railway line at Vanpooh Anantnag in Kashmir valley today.
.
.
A senior Home Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told a private channel that intelligence agencies have intercepted communications between the Hizbul headquarters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and cadres operating in Kashmir which suggested that Salahuddin was very upset over the killing of top Hizb militant Omer Maviya and wanted revenge.

According to the intercepts, Salahuddin has directed his cadres to step up violence ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit and disrupt his programmes. (ANI)

Thanks for the clarification Ray sir. But I do think that we are losing a good opportunity of some serious psy ops here. If I remember correctly, last year the govt had made a big show of highlighting the destruction of Baramulla by the raiders. Even this year, after the hugely publicised show by the Kashmiri groups in UKstan about the tribal invasion, one could have utilized the Infantry Day to highlight the fact that the Indian soldiers were in fact the 'saviours' who protected the valley from the same fate as that which befell Baramulla in 1947.

Guess, we just refuse to play hard ball against the Paki propaganda.

This geelani rat is not going to die so easily.

The Indian government foots all his enormous medical bills and gets him treated at their cost at the best hospitals in India. He also holds an Indian Passport.

Even though he vainly proclaims

"Hum Pakistan hain, Pakistan hamara hai"

He in ungrateful enough not to say

He may well be in the Indian pocket.

"Indian agencies attacked me 14 times but they could not take away even my single hair. I will be return soon hale and hearty after undergoing treatment in Delhi's Escorts hospital," the septuagenarian leader said.

Geelani said the pacemaker in his heart installed on April 25, 1997 is one of the longest living pacemakers. "Its battery has to be replaced and people should not work. It will be a normal treatment," said Geelani.

"Doctors SKIMS has advised me to go for the intestinal checkup
(gastroenterology) at Delhi. I will leave for treatment to Delhi Sunday afternoon and will be treated by the doctors at Escorts hospital," he added.

Man, this guy has it made out for him!!!
He is living off the sarkari kharch in style! No wonder when you consider that the Government spends 14 times on kashmir than it spends on Bihar and 9 times than on Tamil Nadu.

But I suspect that most of the Kashmiri leaders are scared shitless of the terrorists and don't want kashmir to ever go to pakistan. They are OK with India. In that respect what's different between Geelani and Laloo? Both keep the masses humored in their own ways.

What's the percentage of local youth in terrorism these days? I am sure it is at one of the lowest in recent history. The pakistanis have had to once again ask the pashtoon taliban for help in keeping the terror machinery going it seems.

For peace in J&K, we will talk to anyone: Manmohan
In the last five years, the Union government had taken a number of steps to bring development to the State.

“We have tried to revive the traditional connectivity between the people of the region. We took the bold step of reviving the movement of goods and people across the Line of Control on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road and on the Poonch-Rawalakot road. I am happy to announce that the Central government has decided to fund the additional cost of Rs. 385 crore to build the heritage Mughal Road that will connect Shopian with remote areas of Poonch and Rajouri,” he said.
We need similar infrasrtucture and development projects to be executed in the valley pursued with urgency the crores of INR which is pumped in every year needs to be justified .

Brigadier Rajinder Singh laid foundation of victory: Lt Gen Sapru

Addressing a large gathering in an impressive function organised to pay tributes to the great hero Brig Rajinder Singh (MVC), Lt Gen Sapru said that his sacrifice is a unique example in the Military history. Brig Singh actually laid the foundation of victory for the Indian forces in Jammu and Kashmir and enabled landing of troops at Srinagar airport.

Former Adjutant General, Lt Gen (retd) Anup Singh Jamwal said that true tributes to this great commander would be to create awareness among the people about rich ethos, culture and history of Dogras. This great Dogra soldier, who was the chief of Maharaja’s Army displayed great courage, dedication, and patriotism, as on the orders of his ruler, he stopped the advance of the Pakistani army with a hundred odd jawans.

Maj Gen (Retd), G S Jamwal, president J&K Ex-Services League, presented vote of thanks and recalled the contribution of Brig Rajinder Singh in saving Jammu and Kashmir State. He also extended gratitude to Urvarshi Pathania and her sister (daughters of Brig Rajinder Singh) for attending the function organised here in connection with 62nd Martyrdom Day of this great hero.

GOC-in-C, Northern Army Command, Lt Gen B S Jaswal, GOC 16 Corps Lt Gen Rameshwar Roy, IGP Jammu Ashok Gupta, GOC 26 Div Maj Gen K Surendranath, Mayor Kavinder Gupta and former Union MoS (Defence) Prof Chaman Lal Gupta (MLA) were also present besides large number of Army officers and civilian dignitaries.

This is a crucial moment for both TSP and India while the GOP,TSPA and ISI are busy celebrating IED mubaraks , economy at all time low and Taalipaan consuming the society from within ; GOI needs to take the initiative and undo or make up for the lost ground in past 60 years or so as far as J&K is concerned.

Yes conducting free and fair elections and handling the rogue elements with restraint are some of the commendable achievements of the GOI (I can't believe I am saying this :x but for the sake of a balanced pov take it fwiw ) , however nothing has changed from TSP side the momentary cessation in infiltration or cross border firing can be attributed to the present state of affairs in TSP and perhaps an even more watchful world community which is now more aware of the role of the TSPA-ISI combo as far as terrorist activities in India are concerned.

I wish to revisit two articles from SRR/BRM which are still very relevant as far as the resolution of J&K as a disputed territory is concerned.

1. Kashmir Imbroglio- Whose Solution?--Prakash Nanda

I found this piece very interesting for for the first time I saw an article which rebutted the TSP case by not merely being defensive i.e. "continuing the dialogue process" but in fact has references to some original thoughts on how to tackle the TSP ; to substantiate I would quote following references.

# Capt. Bharat Verma
Time is India’s biggest strategic weapon, something that Pakistan does not have. India, the 10th largest economy of the world, can compete in the global economy and win; Pakistan cannot. So instead of agreeing to Musharraf’s timeline for the solution of the Kashmir imbroglio, India must prolong it till Pakistan virtually agrees to the existing reality.

# Arindam Bannerji's ‘Neelam Plan’ and other salient points to tackle TSP.
The Neelam Plan suggests that India should stick to its present position of complete and equal integration of J&K into India and from that position could envisage shifting the LoC to the west and north along the Neelam River, so that the Northern Areas become independent. The rest of the POK could then join Pakistan.
Fourth, equitable distribution of water, the Indus Water Treaty is inherently inequitable – it does not take into consideration that India's population is about 8 times that of Pakistan and Pakistan has eliminated or pushed into India almost all of its ethnic minorities since independence. This treaty must be declared invalid and must be renegotiated on the basis of the population balance on either side of the border {More on IWT in SSridhar's article }.
An equitable distribution would imply that India gets around 40 per cent of the waters currently earmarked for Pakistan. Pakistan has so far depended upon India's inability to use its water resources aggressively and as a consequence not developed its water resource infrastructures adequately. Without such re-negotiation, Pakistan may not realise the criticality of doing so on its own – leading to disaster for Pakistan within this decade.

If this issue is not resolved, the Indus Water Treaty, and not Kashmir, will lead to the next nuclear war – water has already become the most precious resource in India, says Bannerji rightly.

Fifth, no one-sided guns to anybody's head; the only hope for the Pakistani economy is transit fees from oil pipelines. These pipelines will remain pipe dreams unless India agrees to be the key destination market for this oil. One of the main reasons for US interest in peace in Kashmir is related to the big dollars that would roll into the pockets of US oil giants if these pipelines do not flow through Iran.

Unfortunately, if these pipelines become a reality, Pakistan just obtains a large economic gun to put to India's head. To be fair, any gas pipeline should only be considered if at the same time, India is allowed to build up the infrastructure required to completely stop water to Pakistan. In other words, if Pakistan has the ability to shut off energy supply to India, then India must have the ability to shut off water supply to Pakistan, argues Bannerji.
Integration of J&K with India

Again there is an from SRR/BRM archives which I found relevant to the issue.
Jammu & Kashmir: Winds of Change or a Big Deception--Dr Ajay Chrungoo
Over the years, the Government of India has tried to counter religious separatism in the state by patronising apparently moderate varieties of Muslim sub-nationalism. Those political formations, which toned down their public opposition to accession, without altering their fundamental ideograph, were seen as possible instrumentalities to counter pan-Islamism and secessionism. This strategy merely resulted in a symbiotic relationship between the ‘rabid communalists’ and ‘moderate communalists’. We have seen its interplay. The NC opposes the Jamaat publicly but rehabilitates its cadres administratively. The Jamaat curses the NC publicly but supports it clandestinely in elections.

The strategy of the separatists has changed only in form and not in content during the recent elections. They chose to split their support to two political formations; both wedded to Muslim identity politics and its constitutional fortifications. We now have the NC and the PDP competing for the same space.

The new strategy has unleashed competitive separatism and communalism. It has widened the subversive space. Using indicators like tourist inflow to the Valley or the number of people that flock to the rallies of National Leaders, are acts of self-deception. The nation-building strategy in the state has to change. Squarely facing the challenges of Muslim communalism and its militarization, without indulging in subterfuges is the need of the hour.
I think what ever excuse/reason GOI had for being defensive wrt J&K issue no longer exists even Abdullahs have started calling TSP's bluff in open and APHC and JKLF know which side of the bread needs to be buttered ; times have changed GOI itself has agreed to withdraw a significant number of paramilitary personnel from the valley citing improved conditions .Time has come to work towards a complete integration of the valley with the rest of India , article 370 needs to be revisited and separatists dealt with . The more time GOI spends twiddling thumbs or procrastinating higher the chances of TSP recovering from the current mess (thanks to Unkil and ofcourse Lizard) and resume its ops in J&K.

Excellent post Negi. It is critical to show that peace is bought not by pandering and appeasement but by hard line and the future too must be that route.

It would be a pity if the hard won peace is frittered away by calling it a victory of moderate elements and resorting to a different course.

Your post is exceptional because it reaffirms the call for nationalist approach towards JK at the critical moment when calls for WKK approach seems to be in the offing.

Night watch comments on the IA move of two divs from J&K
India-Jammu and Kashmir State: The Army plans to withdraw about 15,000 troops from Jammu and Kashmir State, according to Army spokesman Lt. Col. Biplab Nath, Reuters reported 29 October. Nath said one army division has been moving out of the Poonch and Rajouri districts because the security situation has improved there.

Poonch and Rajouri sectors are on the Line of Control and are notorious infiltration routes from Pakistani held Kashmir. The withdrawal of a division from the Line of Control has no precedent in the last 20 years of fighting in Indian Kashmir. Depending on where the unit relocates, this would be the first major army formation to withdraw and the strongest indication that police forces now have the Kashmir security situation under control.

Rajouri District, at one time one of the most violent and unstable in Kashmir, has a website and office of tourism.
I wish they were moved to Ladakh region to provide contingency.

Terrorists attack Jammu braveheart Ruksana's house

Rajouri: In a revenge attack, terrorists on Friday night hurled grenades at the house of Rukhsana Kausar, the woman who shot into national limelight by taking on armed terrorists of Lashar-e-Toiba killing one of them, but she was not present there at the time of the incident.
.
.
"Ruksana and her family members are at a very safe place in Rajouri", he said.

'After hurling the grenades, the terrorists fled under the cover of darkness.

Singh said the 22-year-old girl was aware of the attack on her house.

He said the attack was expected and that was why she and her family members were kept in a safe place.

Army fears 'spillover' terror from Pakistan in Kashmir

2009-10-31 15:30:00

and Kashmir), Oct 31 (IANS) The Indian Army Saturday ruled out Taliban presence in Jammu and Kashmir but warned of a possible 'spillover' if the situation in Pakistan worsened. It also expressed concern about 'agitational terrorism' in the state, referring to the frequent street protests and shutdowns.

General officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command Lt. Gen. B.S. Jaswal denied the Taliban had entered the state but said that there was a 'possibility of spillover if the situation in Pakistan goes out of control'.

'A stable Pakistan is in our interest,' Jaswal told  a news conference at the Northern Command headquarters in Udhampur, 66 km north of Jammu.

He said that the situation in the subcontinent, referring to the highly volatile situation in Pakistan, where terrorists are frequently targeting civilians and the security establishment, 'could have its effect on Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of India too'.

Jaswal said that though violence in Kashmir was on the decline since 2006, with just 36 incidents of violence reported this year as compared to 276 in 2006, he pointed out that 'agitational terrorism' was a cause for worry.

The term agitational terrorism refers to street protests and shutdowns that started with the Amarnath land row agitation in the Kashmir Valley last summer, halting normal life for weeks together.

Widespread protests in 2009 too rocked the state with the latest being over the alleged rape and murder of two women in Shopian.

Jaswal, in his first media interaction after taking over charge of the command Oct 1, noted that militancy had come down and assured that the army was in a position to tackle all crises.

'The Indian Army would be able to overcome all the situations in the state,' he said.

'Militancy is down. It is visible in the faces of the people, who have shunned fear and come forward to provide us information,' the senior commander added.

Jaswal said that Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), despised by the people of Kashmir, was 'a shield to the soldiers working for a cause'. He stressed that the army would ensure that no human rights violations occurred, but added that 'minor aberrations here and there cannot be ruled out'.

'My orders are to the troops -- not only fight insurgents but also insurgency because that is the root cause of the whole trouble.'

As regards equations with China, he said: 'We are in a mode of strategic trust with China, but the Indian Army is prepared to meet any eventuality.'

Gilgit-Baltistan
Throughout the history, the focal point of the Pakistani establishment and pro- Pakistan Kashmiri leadership confined to highlight the human rights situation in Indian Kashmir and advocating the “doctrine of right of self determination”, conversely, the people of Gilgit Baltistan were ignored both by Pakistan and majority of Kashmiri leadership. In recent years the plight of the people of Gilgi Baltistan was echoed on international fora like European Union and Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) where Pakistan was denounced for its deliberate failure Vis -a -Vis political rights scenario of Gilgit Baltistan......

In this scenario, Islamabad considered indispensable to design some measures to counteract this stern international criticism on Northern Areas issue, thus, recent ‘Self rule Ordinance’ could be viewed as an artifact of that international and domestic needs of Pakistan, however, the development has attracted by and large amalgamated resentment and resistance from major Kashmiri political voices.....

On the other hand, the cheerful supporters from Gilgit Baltistan argue that if Azad Jammu & Kashmir can operate under an interim constitution enacted by the AJK Legislative Assembly in 1974, without damaging the official stance of government of Pakistan over Kashmir, why the people of Gilgit Baltisant can not enjoy the similar political, constitutional and administrative rights?. Additionally, they allege that the people of Gilgit Baltistan were ‘sold’ to Pakistan through reprehensible ‘Karachi Agreement’ participated by some Kashmiri leaders. Subsequently, they insist that inhabitants of Northern Areas should not be sacrificed for the sake of ‘Kashmir case’ and term the package as a stride towards further political, constitutional and democratic reliance and economic development of the region.....

I just finished a detailed book on gemstones and it appears that even today the subcontinental triangle is the best source for precious colored stones. Let me explain
- Myanmar has the best rubies and is also a source of red diamonds (very rare only a dozen pieces avail)
- Northern gravel beaches of Srilanka are a source of multiple precious stones - the best emralds being foremost. Some place called Ratnapura
- Kashmir is the source for the highest quality blue sapphires in the world. Even today

Question: Does anyone know if this mining is still happening in Kashmir? If so which part of Kashmir. Even the karakoram range is known for it's gemstones.

Meanwhile an article on the politics of gemstones. I know a person who was involved with a long term rescue effort in the congo recently and was doing a thesis on diamonds, minerals and supply routes there. He was told by the highest authorities in the US to stop it immediately. It was an interesting discussion.

Per Bal Raj Madhok's book (Kashmir : Storm Center of the world), this can be revoked by issuing a Presidential notification. What are the underlying reasons why this was not done by successive government? Even the NDA and APJ Kalam did not venture down this road.

In J&K, pre-paid mobile connections banned
“Pre-paid connections are prone to misuse. Anyone wanting a mobile connection can always go in for a post-paid connection in Jammu and Kashmir. I think the problem is not so acute in the north-eastern States; we may also have to look at the situation in there,” Mr. Chidambaram said at his monthly stock-taking press conference. He said all service providers have been informed and they had promised to implement the decision.

The decision follows reports that proper verification was not being done while providing such connections by the service providers and vendors. Fake documents and identity numbers were reportedly being used by the vendors particularly, in the case of pre-paid connections. This had given rise to security concerns, officials said.

Every once in a while, we get an interesting email directed at admins, asking questions like "why don't you just leave the Kashmiris alone?" or "why is it that Kashmiri carpets are no longer on sale in Hauz Khas village"? Usually, they are from Pakistanis or POKashmiris pretending to be Pakistanis. But recently we got one from someone claiming to be Saudi. For some reason the urge to respond was irresistible. So here is the Q&A:

__________________________________________________________________
From: Ahmed Ali Usman
i belong to KSA. I just have a question to you people that why are you in Kashmir? Y you are killing the people? Why the people of Kashmir are in so trouble
Please leave them free ! thanks
__________________________________________________________________

And this was the response:

Dear Mr. Usman,

Thank you for your mail. Normally, admins do not respond to such emails which are numerous and tiresome. However, this is one of those rare occasions when an email from Saudi Arabia pops into the box. As one of the admins, I feel an urge to respond. Maybe it is simply that it is a nice morning where I am, coffee is nearby and an interesting opportunity presents itself. I'm going to deconstruct your email, if you don't mind of course.

You say you "belong to KSA". What does that mean? Are you a citizen of Saudi Arabia. While that's possible, I'm inclined to think that you are not - and I can, most probably, pinpoint your national origin. But let's say you are a citizen of KSA. In that case shouldn't KSA belong to you, rather than the other way around? A country, after all, belongs to its citizens. Countries do not own their citizens do they? But, I forget, if you are a Saudi "citizen" then you are a property of the House of Saud, effectively. KSA,is, strictly speaking a family property after all.

Now, you ask, a question to "you people" - meaning us, I suppose the people who run and administer this website in particular, and Indians in general. Out of curiosity, may I ask you whether you include Indian Muslims in this "you people" group? Let's assume, charitably, that yo do. Do you know that there are about seven times more Muslims in India than in Saudi Arabia? Do you still want to refer to us as "you people"? Not that we mind, you can refer to us as anything you want. It simply clarifies your mindset for us. We will give it due respect.

And now comes the clincher: "why are you in Kashmir"? I could have told you that it really is none of your business, which of course it isn't. I could have asked you "why are you in Saudi Arabia" - no doubt to you a meaningless question, but the relevance of your question is similar to us people. But let me be polite to a guest, and say we are not in Kashmir, rather Kashmir is in us. Kashmiris have a claim to each and every inch of India, just as each and every Indian has a claim to every inch of Kashmir. You see, India belongs to Kashmiris just as much as it belongs to anyone else who is Indian. Do you understand the answer? If not, read it again or get it translated by a Pakistani friend you might have. That will help.

"Y you are killing the people"? No one is killing the Kashmiri people, other than terrorists. And we are killing the terrorists, just as Saudi police and military and national guard are killing terrorists all across KSA. If you were Indian, will you not do the same? Please remember Jammu & Kashmir is a part of India, just like Najran and Jizan are a part of Saudi Arabia. Will you allow terrorists to come from Yemen and operate in Najran and Jizan? If you are inclined to research the subject do so. There is plenty of material online, but you must go to non-Jihadi websites as well, to get a balanced point of view. The people of Kashmir are in "so trouble" because of these terrorists.

"Please leave them be free", you demand. You will be suprised at the amount of freedom the Kashmiris have. Much more than you in fact. When did you last elect a government? When did you last have any role in your country in choosing its leadership? Are you free? Do you have any independent newspapers? Can you challenge any decision that your government makes? You can do none of these things. What do you mean, therefore, by "free"? Freedom to do what? Freedom from what? Please use your own brain, and you will see that you are not right. Kashmiris have recently had elections and chosen their own government.

Free your mind. Think, man. Think. Look at the world beyond your little kingdom and see what is happening. I challenge you to do it, if you have the courage to do so. Look at the world with objectivity, if you can.

This guy is more likely a pakistani as you suspected. We all know how desperately these guys want to be arabic. Seems 400% likely the dimwit is living this dream under the anonymous shroud on the internet.

Sikh girl kidnapped

The prominent members of Sikh and Hindu community today expressed grave concern over the kidnapping of a Sikh girl at Bemina Srinagar and her forcible conversion to Islam. They outrightly denied the reports that the girl had eloped willingly with the Muslim youth.

Giving an ultimatum of shifting the girl to Jammu within 24 hours, he warned that in case Government failed to restore the girl to her parents the entire Sikh and Hindu community will come to streets in Jammu.
