Re: The Red Menace
MB's Bengali background will prevent her from being acceptable in current Bihar. Same goes for Assam. In these areas, she can only expand significantly among Muslims [both indigenous and BD immigrants]. Which makes for very doubtful and dubious politics because of backlashes. Things are not necessarily hunky-dory in Orissa too. The linguistic politics has driven a wedge between otherwise traditionally intermingled populations.

West Bengal villagers pay with blood for a steel plant
There is one name that the villagers, almost all illiterate, rarely speak aloud: the Harmath, as the armed Communist party militias are known. The people of Vursa village, like those of Chotokalsingbanga, voted out the Communists last year. The Harmath first visited in December. Driving between the huts and cattle pens, they burned rice stores and this year's seed stock, and torched homes, stole jewellery and clothes and abused women. "We are an opposition pocket in a Communist area. We are day labourers, poor people. We have no defence," said Butnath Ghosh, 70. Repeated raids eventually drove the villagers out. They returned only a few weeks ago. "Without working we cannot eat. We had to return. But we are frightened," Ghosh said.

BSF women battalion : Force to reckon with
Constable Putul Murmu (22), with 36 Battalion, says it was the Maoist problem in west Midnapore which had prompted her to join the force. "I hated to feel like a victim all the time. It is true that the area has seen no development over several decades but being anti-national cannot be the solution. Serving the nation is the right thing to do, and joining the force has also improved my economic status considerably with a starting salary of Rs 11,000," she adds.
Re: The Red Menace
the term is actually harmad, it can mean anything from a hooligan to a paid gunman of the CPIM. in most cases these people are simply criminals on hire with little or no ideological motivation.Gerard wrote:West Bengal villagers pay with blood for a steel plantThere is one name that the villagers, almost all illiterate, rarely speak aloud: the Harmath, as the armed Communist party militias are known. .........
incidentally, the term 'harmad' apparently originates from the word 'armada', from the times when portugese pirates ravaged rural bengal for slave trade.

End of a gory chapter. A lot of youth were misguided and dead before their time thanks to his ideology.

It is interesting to read the rapist goon propaganda yellow daily coverage on this mass murderers' death. Even the word death is not in the headline..
Re: The Red Menace
Good riddance to Kanu Sanyal, came about 30 years too late though but welcome news nonetheless. Did he enjoy the status of a figurehead for the Maoists in recent times or was his influence merely symbolic.
In other news, 3 of our SOG men have embraced shahadat as Naxals are going way beyond their limits. The days are numbered for these glorified dacoits.

March 24, 2010 10:01 IST
CommentAt least three security personnel were killed and six others injured, four of them critically, in a fierce encounter with Maoists in Orissa's Gajapati district early on Wednesday, the police said.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of security personnel including the elite anti-Naxal Special Operation Group and the state police had launched a combing operation in Ambajari forest near Paralakhemundi in Orissa in the wee hours of Wednesday.
A group of Maoists suddenly opened fired at the security personnel, who retaliated.
In the exchange of fire, three SOG jawans were killed and six others injured, the police said, adding four jawans were shifted to Vishakhapatnam as their condition was stated to be critical.
The dead were identified as Sanjeet K Tirkey, Balram Pradhan and Deepak Sonbhoy, while it is not yet ascertained that there was any casualty from the Maoist side, the police said.
The forest area, barely 5 km from this district headquarter town, was being thoroughly searched after the gunbattle to arrest the Naxals who fled, police said.
In another incident in nearby Malkangiri district, Maoists blew up a pump house and control room near the pipeline of a private industrial house meant for movement of minerals in Chitrakonda area, the police said.
About 50 armed Ultras raided the area and triggered explosion after overpowering and assaulting the guards present at the site, they said.
The Maoists had triggered two explosions in Orissa on Wendesday, affecting train services on the Mumbai-Howrah route during their 48-hour bandh call.

The maoists are still alive and kicking in no small measure due to phoren support as much as local support, IMHO. There were reports (leaked by MHA?) of how minutes of cabinet meetings were seized from maoist camps and how the flight paths and plans for our aerial surveillance gliders were also with the maoists very soon only.
Such sophisication in reach, organization and armaments points to more than mere indigenous revolutionary capability, IMHO.

Re: The Red Menace
How come? We barely get to hear the news of any of these dacoits getting killed in numbers. Sorry if I sound like a moron, but why is it that its always the security forces who get ambushed, that too while acting on a tip off? Is our intelligence so badly penetrated that naxal ambushing plans always boomerang on us? And all that after we've sent companies after companies of CPMs to flush them out.Nihat wrote:The days are numbered for these glorified dacoits.
All we get to hear is, this prick was caught here, that ******** was found hiding there and then begins the mahabharat in courts, while our jawans get killed day after day. Not to mention the countless blowing up of railway tracks and damage to infrastructure.
Looks like even they're depressed about it and have started hanging themselves.
Re: The Red Menace
We only have to look at the number of Politburo members and high ranking Maoists caught and/ or Shot during the past one and a half years or so , ever since PC initiated greehunt and clearing Maoists became a top priority.
Killing a large number of low level maoists never seemed to be the ultimate goal of greenhunt. It was always based on accurate intelligence to nab the top leaders and leave them a headless group so that the large number of misguided people who have joined them or have been threatned into doing so can be rehabilitated.
This is how we have curbed insugencies in Punjab, Kashmir and North east, by killing their leadership or forcing them to flee. No matter how strong the conviction, an insurgency cannot be 100% supported from outside India if some of it's leaders are not safe within India.
If the operation was not yeilding results why do you think Maoists are so desperate for it to end. Here's another example of their desperation.

Maoists storm toll plaza in Bihar; kill 2, loot weapons
March 24, 2010 13:28 IST
Hours after targeting the prestigious Rajdhani Express, armed Maoists stormed a government toll plaza in Bihar's Gaya district, killing two people and looting weapons, a top officer said on Wednesday.
Over 200 heavily armed Naxals attacked the toll plaza at Mahapur last night by spraying bullets and hurling bombs, and gunned down a private security guard identified as Wakil Singh, Deputy Inspector General (Magadh range) Anupama Nilekar said.
They also shot dead a truck driver identified as Krishna Kant and injured some personnel in charge of security at the toll plaza, the officer said.
The Naxalites looted 16 weapons, including one rifle, 12 double-barrel guns and three regular guns, besides over 100 rounds of ammunition, from the security guards of the private Magadh Security Force.
The ultras looted cash worth around Rs three lakh. They then blew up the office of the toll plaza using dynamites before leaving the spot, the DIG said.
Earlier, the Maoists targeted the Bhubaneswar-New Delhi [ Images ] Rajdhani Express on late Monday night by blasting a rail line in the district in which hundreds of passengers had a miraculous escape after 10 coaches derailed.

Quite true. Lots of youngsters in the late 60s and early 70s believed in this mumbo-jumbo idealogy, and totally made a waste of their lives. In the "socialist republic" the funny part is that many of the earlier naxalite "leaders"ramana wrote:Kanu Sanyal commits suicide. Off-late I heard an interesting saying in Malayalam "ചുവപ്പ് നരച്ചാൽ കാവിയാകും" (Red due to constant usage, and fading soon becomes Saffron). This was primarily intended against hard-core commies, who have now become religious (especially in Hinduism).
Re: The Red Menace
Sorry Nihat, if they're looting toll boths and derailing India's premier rail services, its not desperation but wanton insinuation and show of strength. In these days of advanced communication means, merely gettign hold of or killing one big pin here and there doesn't make a difference. The communciation lines remain intact. Even the US manages to take out TTP heads every 6 months but the problems remain. one has to make an example of them, in full public view. Make a pile of dead Mofos and distribute the snaps all over. Let Mofos and Mofo wannabes be discouraged.Nihat wrote:If the operation was not yeilding results why do you think Maoists are so desperate for it to end. Here's another example of their desperation.

Dmurphy,
Well put.
I had hopes up when it was disclosed somewhere that the number of battalions raised was big precisely because the strategy was not merely to "clear" an area of maopest terror but to "hold" it, i.e. sit there until a decent civil admin setup is re-established in the area.
That is critical.
Else the maopests like roaches will scurry at the sight of light and return after dark.
And we endup with a situ like the one in Afgn where apparently, the Talibs say of NATO in Afgn:

Re: The Red Menace
Well Hari, clear and hold strategy sounds good. But "Holding" a place by security forces can easily be shown as forceful occupation and Govt dadagiri by the Kobad Ghandys and kishenjis to nubile villagers. It also leaves the door open for HR violation allegations, complicating the problem further.
I think unless a 'bluestar' happens to them, these guys will keep jumping out of the bushes. Some sort of a hangman at the cross roads to portray the Govt resolve.

everybody has to ultimately turn to mysticism whether in this life or the next.
Now I know that this is hardly a commie loving forum, but let us also not lose all perspective.
Kanu Sanyal was a much better man than Charu Majumdar.
Even in those days he had tried to steer away from the "squad torei korbo" ( we'll make squad) business.
It is wrong to blame him for all those deaths in the main. Till his last days he also maintained that the current maoist movement is a crock of shit.
And till his death he did work with peasants. Howsoever misguided his ideology, he was not a bad man, and put his money where his mouth was.

Re: The Red Menace
Its easier to swing from one extreme to another. Its more difficult for the non-committed, hovering in the centre - to swing to extremes. Hitler and some of the top Nazis were quite interested in netting the extremists among the Communists in Germany [KPD remnants after the 1919 liquidation of Spartakists]. I know of several ex-Naxalites now devotees of various gurus, babas, and "god" as well as "Chandi" fearing. Some have even combined it with Buddhism and "Dalitism". Strangely none have chosen to convert to Christianity or Islam if they were born "Hindus"!Sachin wrote

The swing was hypothesized in Eric Hoffer's 1948 classic - The True Believer - Psychology of Mass movements.
But that is a thing of great hope for me! And I think Rudradev-ji will gladly agree!

I don't care much for western superstitions such as critical theory. I think Lacan and Foucault do not deserve the adulation they have got over the years. I have some respect for Derrida but that is about it.
And I also don't have time for western indulgences like communism.
However I do love the Mahabharat. And it says:
"Chakravat Parivartante Sukhani Cha Dukhani Cha".
And so it will be for Bengal, India and the World.

Re: The Red Menace
Why should "harvesting of souls" be an EJ only business?
If "souls" can be turned away from the "red" to a colour more appropriate for the land, we should do it. The suicide of the relatively moderate (of the triumvirate) at 78, and turning of ex-Maoists into "saffron" is part of an as yet imperceptible process of national turning. It is a good sign. I feel more confident about my inner realizations, seeing this.
It is a sign, that India is trying to return to its roots and understandings more appropriate for the civilization. Let us remove the die-hard leaders, eliminate those in the middle order who have made it into a lucrative business. The bottom orders joining them are good material for future "forces" of change. A nuanced strategy necessary - but will become nothing if an equally strong, idealistic, and dedicated "mass movement" cannot give direction. Mere economic rehabilitation will not help.

If they have so much confidence on the ontime performance of IR, may be they should collect their leadership and lie down on the tracks, 20 minutes after last train is supposed to go. Perhaps they can also persuade their friends like Chindu Editors, Arundathi Roy, Romila Thapar, Karat & Co etc., to join them...

Re: The Red Menace
Looks like the naxalite loonies are now realising that their old tactic of killing people are not yeilding good results. People have started seeing through their tricks, and they are considered as the criminals and murders (as ought to be). So now the blame is on Railways and other agencies. Do they naxalites expect Railways to form some sort of a coordination cell, which consults Maoists before running trains? And Maoists going ahead and saying that Railways should not trains on certain times, so that can blast a few tracks. What next? Maoists saying that Railways should run an empty train, so that it can be blasted off (for maximum sensation news)Gerard wrote:Rajdhani wasn’t target: Naxals

Two tropes underpin Arundhati Roy’s rhetoric: the constant equation of weaponry with beauty and joy, and the repeated emphasis – if without much insight – on the militarisation of daily life.

she is a writer alright. she set this up so nicely:
this is so disturbing. and went back to this many times. but then that is only half the story and only half the list of culprits. the other half is those who set these children up for this. no mention of all that all. this whole argument of hers is so irresponsible. she herself enjoys the fruits of modern world. and yet she wants these children to live a caricatured, cliched life.I’m surrounded by these strange, beautiful children with their curious arsenal. They’re all Maoists for sure. Are they all going to die? Is the jungle warfare training school for them? And the helicopter gunships, the thermal imaging and the laser range-finders?

Even we (chinese) have moved Chairman Mao's dead body
out of public sight.
Mao is not in people's mind at PRC. They are busy worried
about water - specifically where to find it.
Yunnan province, QongQin etc are facing a permanent

Mr. Li would like Indian Maoists to stop and join the
mainstream life (even if poor and half-naked) because
its still better than talking to Arun's dhoti Roy and still be poor
and half-naked.

Maoist top gun from Jadavpur univ falls to cops
Sukumar Mahato | TNN
Jhargram: Top Maoist squad leader Bikram alias Abhisek Mukherjee — a former Jadavpur University student—was blown to bits along with three other rebels in an encounter with crack COBRA commandos in Hathilot forest of Jangalmahal’s Lakhanpur on Thursday night.
His senior comrade, field commander Bikash, who has been overseeing the expansion of Maoist base in Jangalmahal, was seriously injured in his first ever encounter with the forces in the forests spread over 48sq-km.
Sources said Bikash was bleeding profusely when guerrilla squads dragged him deep into the forests close to Lalgarh. Gunbattles are still on in the jungle as over 1,500 joint forces personnel tighten the noose around some more senior Maoist leaders, including Chhatradhar Mahato’s brother Sasadhar.
Sasadhar’s security aide Antony was injured along with 10 others in the group, say sources. Police claim at least six Maoists have been killed. The body of Sambhu Mahato — a Maoist squad leader in charge of Goaltore — was found in Bhalukbhasa jungle. At least 22 villagers have been rounded up in Maoist-dominated Salboni and Kalsibhanga areas for interrogation. The Maoists were tracked by forces early Thursday morning. The encounter has been on for over 32 hours now. Maoist defector Marshal Gurucharan Kisku, the husband of Jagori Baskey (who led the Silda attack) and once a close Kishanji aide, is said to be with the forces.
Bikram (28), a third year dropout of JU’s international relations department, was Kishanji’s voice in rebel announcements and would introduce himself in broken Bengali as ‘I’m Bikram, Kishanji’s friend’. A resident of Chandannagore in Hooghly, Bikram was the one who announced the recent 72-day truce offer. Bikram’s death has sent ripples in Jadavpur University.

Battling the Maoists in Jharkhand...
The security forces have dominated the area for the first time in many years, setting up camps in the forests.
For the first time, the forces have established control in as many as eight hills in remote areas like Kesarpur, Pulgoda, Hedelbera, Charinda Jhatijharna and Badajudi.
Troops have now been deployed along the streams and ponds in the forest while guards are keeping an eye on the local grocery stores in the remote villages which rebels rely on.
"Once the supply line is cut, it would force the Maoists to come out of the forests and surrender," said a trooper involved in the operations.

In case of casualties of local troops, like happened in case of EFR, there will be blow back. They after all, come from the same society. Also, the State Government ( of Bengal) cannot blame it's own troops for HR Violations. It is difficult to adopt the Paki strategy of 'running with hares and hunting with hounds" when involved in anti-Maoist operations as the main party.
--By involving IA, the CPM cadre can hold morchas on HR violations and associated tactics. Plus, it raises the conflict to a different level all together. If tomorrow, IA asks for AFSPA in troubled areas (which will be necessary), you can expect the high decibel levels from the usual quarters.

excerpts from the article:
--I think what is being done is the to identify an external target for the Maoists. Something, which is clearly identified as representative of Government of India and gives more breathing space to the State Government. The CPM in Bengal has joined an increasing chorus from the states to deploy the military as the Centre shapes a shotgun strategy counter-Maoist offensive. Ironically enough, Bengal was the first — and remains the only — state in which the army was deployed against Naxalites since the uprising in Naxalbari (1967) spawned thousands of Maoists who now claim influence over a quarter of the country. Despite the clamour for the army, Union home minister P. Chidambaram said even yesterday during a tour of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand: “There is no proposal to involve the army in anti-Naxal operations.” But three days back in New Delhi, Chidambaram had said in two separate meetings, that if need be, the special forces of the army would be called upon to lend their muscle to the offensive he is now shaping.

Interesting observation. There's no way Dilli is unaware of this angle, IMHO. Chances are Dilli will focus attn on clearing up areas like CT, JH and Orissa rather than enter Bengal with central forces till the next state polls happen and CPM is evicted decisively by popular mandate.By involving IA, the CPM cadre can hold morchas on HR violations and associated tactics. Plus, it raises the conflict to a different level all together. Further, seems to me that Green hunt will be continued to be led by a paramilitary or rather a 'militarized' police force under central rather than state command. Special forces lending a hand is a welcome move, so long as their hand is not seen but its punch felt among the maobadis.
I suspect a lot of info of actual ops ging on is classified and only small snippets trickle in from here and there. Need to keep an eye on traditional maobadi outlets, overgroundus, pimtellectuals and phoren support for whines about 'massive' HR violations etc. BTW, the furrin haath would be overjoyed to know the ass_et they created and ass_idously nurtured (Suzanne ARoy) has shown up to be 400% impotent in generating sympathy or even debate for their maobadi agents within Des. Time to activate other bookerish ass_ets I guess. Adigga, where art thou?

As a concerned well wisher of India I agree there are many challenges. But I do hope people have noticed another sham a piece of insidious hypocritic work by Arundhati roy in the guardian and wonder why everytime people have to endure and take it lying down? It is hyprocricy who are these people to decide on behalf of the others? What orgasmic delight on seeing the exotic ness of a gondi? Who are these outsiders to impose their vision of a peoples spring thunder? Lies sham. The state has failed and the administration has broken down. Poetry and the imagined vision is so easy and dangerous and is another getaway to a pol pot regime. As if tamil nadu and goa want liberation What lies what lies? We all want liberation especially from propaganda. At least another activist like balagopal did not ever hanker for a foreign trip and he realized the perils of maoist tyranny and had some sensible suggestion to make . Have these activists done wage labour? Have they washed toilets and worked in burger king have they slept near the stinking toilet of 2626 kerala express from the border to dindigul? No, they do not know what wage labour is because they can write poems as concerned citizens? Can they provide jobs, yes but in a peoples commune after class enemies are killed.
How easy it is to bash India sitting from ac rooms. Most ordinary Indians have been to latehar and paravatipuram and salur 1 million times. What is so great of it? What a sham, India is being broken to pieces. I was so depressed and in poor british public will be poisoned and the India gets bashed another time.
These are people who visit dandakaranya once in a lifetime and make it an exotic orientalistic event. The same intellectuals who abuse the west feed of it like parasites. These are the same capitalist rodents who own acres of land. They exploit the poor and are a part of the award mafia. The poison spread abroad has catastrophic consequences.
Re: The Red Menace
Hope to see another arundhati piece soon? Please also see her countercurrents piece and the epw articels[the present editor is so pro maoist compared to his predecessor who made the magazine a name to reckon with in academic circles] where kashmir is likened as an occupation but people blown to bits the borther and sister and her friend are not considered because they are compredor parasites. What about the soldiers who die?
