Long ago it used to be the Ashoka chakra - IIRC there is a photograph somewhere. I have no idea when and why it was changed.
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous
While the IN was operating the Harriers onboard the Aircraft Carriers [AC], with its vertical landing, the issues of missing the landing deck & having to re-try was never a factor
But now that the IN would be flying the MiG-29Ks, pilots would now have to perform their landings by attempting to hook on to one of the many arrester cables laid out on the deck, failing which he'd have to re-try.
The USN, with its own Refueling Tankers, are able to provide such aircrafts with the additional fuel to stay in the air as long as required.
So how would the IN plan for such a situation - doing a buddy re-fuelling from another AC taking off from the AC would mean that next time there'd be 2 AC attempting to land on the deck. Doing it with another Aircraft that takes off from a shore-based runway would restrict the operating range of the AC
Would the IAF then need to be kept in the loop every time one of these AC goes out on a patrol keeping its Il-78s prepared for such a situation?

It was a major PITA to paint on the aircraft and get it right. so they moved over to the Roundels again.shiv wrote:[

It would take longer and use up more fuel to refuel from a tanker than to go around and try again.Hiten wrote:

When is the MRCA deal going to be announced? Since Gripen is the last plane to trial, it should be soon?
Or did i just jinx it?
Or did i just jinx it?

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous
The deal will be inked as soon as the ink dries on a 155-mm howitzer ( the non-ULH kind) and 2nd line of diesel subs deal. So, one can go figure how "soon" it is going to happen.Carl_T wrote:When is the MRCA deal going to be announced? Since Gripen is the last plane to trial, it should be soon?

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous
hello folks. the excerpt below is from an essay bu Arundhati Roy:
does that explosive type make sense to experts here? who makes it? who is likely to posses it and so on?We’re going to wait for the sun to lose some of its vehemence before we start walking again. We take a nap in the gazebo. There is a spare beauty about the place. Everything is clean and necessary. No clutter. A black hen parades up and down the low mud wall. A bamboo grid stabilises the rafters of the thatched roof and doubles as a storage rack. There’s a grass broom, two drums, a woven reed basket, a broken umbrella and a whole stack of flattened, empty, corrugated cardboard boxes. Something catches my eye. I need my spectacles. Here’s what’s printed on the cardboard: Ideal Power 90 High Energy Emulsion Explosive (Class-2) SD CAT ZZ.

One silent observation.
RayC has started it and others have picked up on it.
Is that (repeated) mention of "dhoti" as something
backward or wrong.
what is wrong with wearing a dhoti? (nothing)
commenting on it is insulting a whole culture
what is so right about wearing pants???? (nothing)
India should be proud that P. Chidambaram etc wear
loongy during important events. And Mr. Antony wears
dhoti. Just like Indira Gandhi wore a Saree.
On the contrary look at all the dapper paki politicians
going around the world with a begging bowl.
Mahatma Gandhi wore a loin cloth during his entire life after
returning to India. So according to RayC he should be
labelled as an idiot too?
besides what is he wearing - Antony is quiet dedicated
and doing his best for the country. There is no way he
can satisfy everyone as far as arms purchases.
It is requested to moderators that oldies like RayC
be told that it is unwise and foolish to keep degrading
dhoti, or judge leaders based on what they wear.
India should be proud of its ethnic wares.

Do we have any thread discussing all the riots that took place in India and how they affected us politically, economically and especially our internal security?
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous
The references to dhoti are meant to be sarcastic humor. That sarcastic humor was designed to mock visiting Paki lurks as well as create a semi-serious image of "Indians" as belonging to a stereotype that Indians are often seriously thought to belong to in Paki internet fora - especially prevalent about a decade ago.Mr_Li wrote:One silent observation.

The Pakistani is always and invariably tall, fair, and tight-assed (TFTA). India is always and invariably short, dark complexioned and rice eating (SDRE). He wears a dhoti and he shivers within that dhoti when faced with a TFTA.
The use of these sarcastic stereotypes has actually resulted in Pakis on the net realizing that they are being laughed at - reducing the number and frequency of occasions when Pakis use the stereotypes. So references to "dhoti" are part of a subtle BR community conspired form of psy-war.
If you take it seriously the meaning is lost. RayC unfortunately took it seriously as some others have also done. It is not meant to be taken seriously. Sarcastic self-deprecating humor should not be confused with facts.

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous
why are our missile scientists/users going ballistic?
Also, why do all the user tests have to be conducted from DRDO facilities in orissa only?
Does the location of launch have any effect on the path/performance of the missile? why not test how the missile will perform in the Rajasthans heat or closer to the mountains.
In war time, the prithvis will not be fired from orissa coast only.
Ofcourse over unpopulated areas only

we cant find 200 km for prithvi?
(From 27°53'43.38"N, 70°28'26.80"E to 25°49'15.49"N, 70°39'0.70"E )
Also, why do user test have to take place in drdo facilities - wheeler island? The prithvis are with the army for long enough. Do they go to the weapons developer everytime they test a tank or an artillery piece? Can't a tried & tested prithvi test take place on the western coast? Preferably near kutch region, to drive the message next doors?
All i am asking is, that should all User tests be conducted in sanitized environs of a drdo facility?

Rony, the jarwa have mellowed down a lot in recent years and the fierce independent spirit is sadly no longer as fierce. the one tribe that still maintains it is the sentinelese, any visit to their island is quickly cut short by a hail of arrows that are fairly accurate to 100 metres.

shardul ?As far as the name for the LCH goes, i don't think that HAL painted a tiger(it is a tiger right?) on it for no reason (though there is an attack helo already named after it!) .So what's tiger in Sanskrit?
does lubdhak translate to hunter ? I thought lubdhak's master kalpurush (orion) was the hunter ?Continuing the Sanskrit star name convention as with Dhruv (Pole Star), then how about "Lubdhaka" (Sirius or Dog Star), translating as 'Hunter' in Sanskrit...

Jarawa is a fine name for an attack helicopter
It is known what the Sentilinese call themselves?

Stone Age tribe kills fishermen
The Sentinelese, thought to number between 50 and 200, have rebuffed all contact with the modern world, firing a shower of arrows at anyone who comes within range.
They are believed to be the last pre-Neolithic tribe in the world to remain isolated and appear to have survived the 2004 Asian tsunami.
The men killed, Sunder Raj, 48, and Pandit Tiwari, 52, were fishing illegally for mud crabs off North Sentinel Island, a speck of land in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands archipelago.
Fellow fishermen said they dropped anchor for the night on January 25 but fell into a deep sleep, probably helped by large amounts of alcohol. During the night their anchor, a rock tied to a rope, failed to hold their open-topped boat against the currents and they drifted towards the island.
"As day broke, fellow fishermen say they tried to shout at the men and warn them they were in danger," said Samir Acharya, the head of the Society for Andaman and Nicobar Ecology, an environmental organisation. "However they did not respond - they were probably drunk - and the boat drifted into the shallows where they were attacked and killed."
The Indian coast guard tried to recover the bodies using a helicopter but was met by a hail of arrows.

It looks like a snake ready to attack to me.
Since cobra is taken Vishdant, Takshak or some exotic snake origin name would be nice
Shardul, Vikraal is nice too. but Shardul and takshak are taken for other projects.
Spear or arrow related names would be great too!
Something like Laskhyabhed would be great!

as long as it is not a sissy name like huffy or puffy I am ok with it.
gerard, I don't think we know what the sentinelese call themselves. if wiki is to be believed even jarwa is an exonym.
as far as tribes go, bhils are quite well known for their warrior skills as well as guerrilla tactics, suits well to an attack helo.

Suggestions for LCH names
=================
Baagh - Word for "tiger" in many Indian languages
Pulicat - Puli = tiger in Tamil and a tiger is a big cat
Black Tiger - The logo looks like a leopard as well.
Muhammad Ali - Because it floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee
