I have been reliably informed that this year Vishu is on the 15th. Maybe due to the "Karuthe Vava" (New Moon) today. I am doing the Vishu kanni for my family tomorrow.
surinder ji, this day is celebrated virtually everywhere in India under various names. in fact a compilation of all the festivals would be a nice read.
the new year celebration goes by the name poila boishakh (1st day of baishakh) in bangla.
Interesting that Baisakhi appears to be closely related to Vaishaka, the month name in sanskrit ( Vaishaka being the second month in lunar calendar, following chaitra ). But it doesn't make sense as Baisakhi is celebrated as a solar calendar event.
Happy Visakhi!! The tenth Guru Sri Guru Gobind Singh was an intellectual of supreme qualities. He not only chose this day but sent invitation to people all over India (Bidar, Dwarka, Dhaka, Hastinapur, Lahore, Jagannath Puri, Haridwara, Prayag) on the creation day of the Khalsa.
Surinder!! Actually the National Indian Calendar (also called Desi Mahine in Punjabi) is Vikramaditya Calendar (Bikrami calendar) which has following names.
Vaishakh is new year becuase it is the time when crops are ready to be harvested in all over India (From Tamil Nadu to Kashmir From Sindh to Nagaland)
1 Chaitra 30/31 March 22* --- Chet in Punajbi/ Chetra in Hindi
2 Vaishākh 31 April 21 --- Baisakh/Visakh -- Time to harvest the Rabi Crops
3 Jyaishtha 31 May 22 --- Jeth /Jsheth --- Hot and dry
4 Āshādha 31 June 22 --- Haad --- Hot and dry
5 Shrāvana 31 July 23 --- Saun/Saawan -- Kharif Crops Monsoon season for Rice, etc crops
6 Bhādrapad 31 August 23 -- Bhadron/Bhadon --- monsoon, same
7 Āshwin 30 September 23 --- Asso
8 Kārtik 30 October 23 --- Katte
9 Agrahayana 30 November 22
10 Paush 30 December 22 poh/ Cold -- time to sow the Rabi Crops
11 Māgh 30 January 21 Maag
12 Phālgun 30 February 20 Phagun
so!! instead of January/February the Indian subcontinent should use these Desi calendars (created during Vikramaditya reign) which are much more practical and goes along our agricultural based economy.
