Yes, I guess so. I have seen the third pic earlier in context of the SFF. The officer in front now lives in Delhi I think. Nice that u could dig up at least this one pic.

pmund wrote:Atreya, i think neither of them is SFF (if u mean Special Frontier Force). They are from the Ladakh Scouts, the youngest infantry regiment. Look closely at the scarf motif in the first pic and the woman's sleeve badge in the second. It's the Urial, the Ladakhis reginmental mascot.
Good Sir, they are all SFF pics. For one, Ladakh Scouts don't were maroon beret and are not Para qualified (as is evident from those "wings" above the breast pocket).

Two, the pic with the lady was discussed on this forum when it first appeared.

Third, check the insignia of SFF here:http://www.specialoperations.com/Foreig ... -Badge.jpg (same as that on the maroon beret of lady officer and troops)

And compare it with Ladakh Scouts crest and beret here:http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/LAND-FORC ... 4/0348.jpg

Hope this helps!!!

I recently visited Brighton and had lesson-101 on its historic linkage to Indian Army. So, sharing the below links for your reference. Not sure if these have been posted earlier - Radhey Shyam

Spotters from world over come to New Delhi Airport & go around to see, photograph, note registrations & just enjoy the absolute magic that aviation is.

Couple of the Brit spotters also got themselves into a soup in Nai Dilli and landed in jail for nearly 2-3 weeks just for doing their job!!!

What IS this? Why are they interested in the comings and goings of aircraft? The website says it is an "aviation magazine".

I've posted about it here - http://www.nycaviation.com/forum/spotte ... 53s15.html

In a nutshell, they were using a SBS Box Image and had the Scanner Image on Speaker + Fine Quality Binoculars which would warrant a stand/tripod.

These are very commonly used by Spotters & Aviation Photographers, i dont have either of them ^ as all precise aircraft arrival & departures info is freely available on the internet but these are great to have if you have the extra money.

They didnt emerge their room for a bit & when the room-service brought-in food they were surprised to see all that gear laid-out in the room & the live ATC Communication on Speakers, so he contacted his supervisor who inturn contacted the Police & once it goes to the Police > to the Media & its a circus from there onwards.

After all that

> charged under the antiquated but draconian Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, with intercepting privileged communications.
> Fined Rs. 25,000,
> Mr. Hampton and Mr. Ayers were informed they could return to the UK.

I don;t agree

we are not a gentle peaceful neighbourhood

we cannot have the same easy attitude.

Its one thing to write about something you see from your airplane window but using gear to listen in to aTc, decode radar etc.

Listen to ATC - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ham_radio_in_India
decode radar - there's no such thing !

Did you click on the hyperlink on the SBS Image ? I suggest you do.

Besides, one dosent really need an SBS box as you can get an absolute & precise detail about any aircraft & what its doing if you wanted to.

Question is you should know where to look besides, years of passionately following airplanes also leads to new places, people, fruitful friendships which is also a source of vital info which cant be had otherwise :)

To give you an example: Anyone can view this - http://www.newdelhiairport.in/livefligh ... px?smode=A
So, if you wanted to see/photograph your favorite plane, you can have a GPRS enabled mobile phone enabling access to the website on the go & sit at the approach area.

What a bit more money (SBS Box) will buy you is exactly what you got from the Delhi Airport Website >>BUT<< in a Graphical/3D Representation and Thats It !

Vishal you can respond aggresively all you want. :)

Bottom line can you guarantee me all spotters are innocent babes in the woods who are just pure hobbyist??
Just because you are one does not mean others are.

Put yourself in the shoes of those in charge of base security - they have enough nightmares with chaiwalas and slums etc that they need spotter types around.

We are silly when we do not allow photographs of gate guardians etc. We are silly when we do not allow pictures of our historical stuff.

But allowing spotters with powerful binocs and other gear around our airbases - No dice.

Mumbai Police's new armoured vehicle....I suppose, so far we have seen only Mahindra Marksman..
This is new one... It looks really cool..It would be good for our QRT's 8)

Quality is not that good...I had to take the screenshot

Image

It looks similiar to Ashok Leyland's armoured bus that was displayed in this year's Defence Expo

^^There are couple of shots of F-16's. One of the Mirage and the MiG 29 pic are not IAF. Neither is the Sukhoi at the end. Maybe this can go in the multimedia thread.

Well as the cliche goes "When you're in Rome do as the Romans do". As I type this there is a guy with no shirt outside my house with a decorated flower bedecked bull and a black Indian pipe (called "waalga" in Kannada) that produces primarily loud noise in the hands of anyone but the most skilled players and this guy is blaring out an outrageously badly played devotional tune and asking that I should pay him money for that. This is perfectly normal for a Bangalore morning. But it would not be in, say, the US of A.

Equal-equally plane spotting equipment is unavailable in India to most people and is unknown as a hobby to most except relatively wealthy elites. Anyone doing it is going to be suspected. If you do it you have to do it surreptitiously, not openly. If you do it surreptitiously, you will be suspected even more, if caught.

@ Gaur : Yeah, I too gave that a thought before posting it, but the way I take is that it is said on the lighter side and hence okay to post, though some people may not take it that way.

@ Raja Bose : That is the backside of a santro that has some sort of a screen along the rear glass. The sticker itself is approx an A4 sized paper, hence had to take a close up with the mobile.

Not a USMC slogan either. The slogan came from the vietnam era and was started by the anti-war crowd. The original started with "Join the army, see the world..."

It pays to look scared when an armed man is telling you to do something. Heroism is for Hollywood. Those are normal humans behaving as they should. The police are doing some job, we just don't know what it is.

You don't expect too treated like a prince after being rounded up for protesting, especially violently and storming a police barrack with clubs and axes. Of course, the tactics used by Manipur Police against protestors are quite brutal too.

A sterling example of Indian press' commitment to ensuring that news, images and other information flowing from troubled parts of India reflect as badly as possible on the State.

Can you imagine ANY, I repeat ANY Western MSM channel or publication carrying an image of their own troops facing down an "unarmed" and "unprotected" civilian with a look of raw fear on his face? No. Not a friggin' chance. Even if the civilian has just rioted, killed, murdered whatever. The Western MSM 'free' media ALWAYS depicts their own troops in a +ive light. Not so our communist-funded 'HR-friendly' DDM idiots.

I am neither saying that this photograph shouldn't have been published nor that it is unfair to criticize it.

Journalistic standards in India leave a lot to be desired, however, freedom of the press is one of our strengths. It allows us to see all aspects. Wherever people have tried to hide away unsavory stories under the cloak of "National Security", there has been abuse.

A free society has the courage to take on this pain and grow from the experience. In a free society, these stupid journo's will be sidelined by watchful readers, just as the above comment points out.

While the photograph looks bad and maybe interpreted as unflattering of the way our forces conduct operations it is still worthwhile printing it.

Being 10 years in (teaching visual communication) new media and communications I would say this image will have negative impact on viewers. Whoever says readers in general will negotiate the message is in delusion.

Working in current affairs TV programme for couple of years in 1994 in New Delhi i saw Indian media (especially English) is ruled by people living in lala land. I had so may conversations with these kind of people but they just don't see the reality. 20 years hence, i know i can't change the world, however, i target one person at a time and i am happy to say i have some success - just like BR.

New media is good for getting the truth out for now. However, there is so much research is being done to control this channel that it won't be long before this becomes one more tool for DDM. In fact, i can see it happening right here in BR.
(i am a lurker here since 1999) - And terribly sorry for OT

I foresee something else.

We live in an era when "media" means Western media and we ape western standards. That is to say "Do not show gore and dead bodies". Gore and dead bodies are taboo in Western societies. In India we show the faces of our dead and gawk at gore on the roadside.

Similarly when you catch a thief taking something from your pocket or from your house and you are about to give him a whack - he will collapse on the ground in fear and cry - acting like he is innocent. No dignity from him. he is doing the right thing. Although guilty he is play acting like you are victimizing an innocent person. I have been in this situation (of catching someone) several times and know that play acting, crying and falling at someone's feet are normal. As a college student, caught by authorities for something I did not do (35 years ago) I was advised by people "Cry and fall at the principal's feet"

Tha Macaulayite Indian, living elite lives, unexposed to the way Indians behave says "Don't show blood and gore" The same Macaulayism falls for the oldest trick in the book "Crying, looking scared and feigning innocence". This photograph and the comments that followed are a testament to the efficacy of the sort f play acting that is common in India.

Let me relate a story from my childhood. I was perhaps 6 years old and was attending a wedding. A chain snatcher got into the wedding hall and grabbed my mothers' necklace but could not get it. My mother - who was as tough a cookie as anyone chased him and this guy ran into a toilet an hid there, not realising that my mother's brother in law, the father of late Wingco Suresh was also there and he was a police officer. The latter broke open the toilet door (when there was no response to knocking) to find this guy cowering in there. The chain snatcher - surprised to find the door suddenly opening started pretending to cry and literally started saying "da da da da da" claiming that he was mute and unable to speak. My uncle (Suresh's dad) a burly six footer, gave him one almighty whack. The man's voice suddenly reappeared and he stared speaking (in Kannada) saying "Sir. let me go i will never do it again" even before he was accused of anything. This was a year when Suresh and his close friend and coursemate Air marshal Rajkumar were just joining the IAF.

When you deal with criminals - you have to use means that are abnormal for others. The methods are not gentle - but typically the really innocent person will not behave overly scared or pretend that he is in a coma. I am not saying these are firm rules, but this also happens. You need to know India from an Indian viewpoint first. Eventually Indian media will dominate the world and get bigger than other media. Then the way people think will also change.
