Regarding the Nilambur train sabotage case, police muster all their wings
Mr. Punnoose said the incident was being viewed with utmost seriousness, and that the investigation was progressing in the right direction. The DGP said he himself visited Nilambur as the case was not of ordinary nature.
Other senior police officers indicated that there would be inter-State links in the incident. “It is not a case of mere mischief,” he told The Hindu after the meeting. He declined to say if the police had made any breakthrough or got any vital clues. “But we are not where we started our investigation. We have made clear progress,” the DGP said.

Sir, thanks to the "Gelf" money politicians (and people as well) of every hue and cry had totally ignored the seeds of terrorism getting thrown in Kerala society. The "Gelf money" could buy out any one. Kerala has not faced any major riots like say partition riots in up North, nor faced any wars. The last major communal riots were in 1921 and now the worthy socialist historians (??) have made even that into a "freedom struggle" (against the British). An average Malayali Kuttappan have been fed with a false security, that Kerala being 100% literate, will not face any terrorism or communal clashes. That is all reserved for the less educated, communal bigots in North India or in "Gujaraath". Now let me see how the society copes up with the new revelations.

Scanners for border trade posts
As part of the initiative to effectively examine consignment coming into the country, the government has decided to install swift and complete scanning equipment in phases at the border road-trade posts.
Even as the debate continues over whether the country should be part of the U.S.-led Container Security Initiative (CSI), the government decided to order six such scanners which will be installed in Jammu and Kashmir and the north-east, sources in the top echelons of the government told The Hindu.
The Ministry of Defence, which has been identified as the nodal agency by the government to procure these scanners, gave the go-ahead recently to acquire these products on a fast track. The sources said these scanners would be in place over the next 10 to 12 months.
However, the security establishment in the country is yet to take a view on installation of scanners at various ports and use technology to pre-screen containers. However, the sources said, installation of advanced scanners at border trade-posts is independent of any view that the government may take on joining the CSI.

Warangal Gold Merchant Arrested
And, Warangal is hotspot for Naxals. It may be recalled that Narsaiah, a small farmer in Mothe village, unearthed a steel box containing gold biscuits while tilling his fields, a week ago. . . But police arrested Narsaiah after the news spread in the village and recovered about 3 kg gold from him.
Sources said the gold biscuits seized bore Swiss and British stamps dated 1994 and 1995. The police are yet to ascertain to whom the biscuits belonged to. But cops suspect that Maoists might have used the agricultural land as their dump. Police said there were similar instances earlier when they recovered weapons, gold and other things hid and forgotten by Maoists.

The Kerala case is expanding in scope
Police sources said they had taken many people into custody at various places for interrogation in connection with the attack on Thodupuzha Newman College teacher T J Joseph.
It has been learnt that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the attack case, has taken three persons into custody for allegedly providing fake SIM cards to those who attacked Joseph.
Police have also strengthened security on the premises of the Aluva Judicial First Class Magistrate Court where the incriminating documents and CDs seized from the residences of the PFI activists have been kept.
Meanwhile, top police officials denied certain reports that the city police had asked the military intelligence to inquire into the failed attempts made by the PFI activists to attend various Defence functions in Kochi.
Navy authorities also said they were not aware of any development in this regard.
Police sources said they would take up their operations against the PFI in a much larger way to unearth any vital leads that might help the police to take the investigation in other terror related cases to new dimension.
Meanwhile, the Panangad police, headed by sub inspector Sibi Thomas conducted massive raid at the houses of the leaders of the PFI and SDPI. In the intensive raids conducted on Sunday, the police team recovered CDs containing provocative speeches and leaflets containing terror-spreading messages.
The police also conducted raids at the houses of local SDPI leader Kalankode Sulaiman, Nettoor Kunnothu Parambil Abdu, Periyad Sudhiyan, and Siddique. The police recovered lethal weapons from some of these houses.
“We are waiting for the outcome of the full contents of the CDs seized from these houses. In wake of the new developments happening in the state the police team is planning to intensify the ongoing raids to prevent the spreading of terror activities in and around Panangadu.
It is learnt that even teenagers are attracted by the terror groups.
Re: Internal Security Watch
To add on to what SSridhar noted. A massive raid is happening in Northern district of Kannur. As per the news report in afternoon, a vacant house and the plot surrounding it has been used to store a huge cache of explosives and other weapons. The house's keys were kept by an old neighbour. A couple of months back a group of youth got the keys saying that they want to use the building for conducting some classes every Thursday. The house is close to a mosque. TV news channels showed some of the stuff seized during the raid. A couple of caps with SDPI printed were also shown. (Asianet News - English).

For al-Qaeda, watching from Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, this provides an opportunity for which it has waited a long time - to hijack Pakistan's "bleed India" operations for its own cause, that is, to pull India into the region's war theater.

Kerala notes...
Bombs, weapons seized at Edakkad (The Hindu)
Bombs, weapons seized from mosque premises (The Daily Pioneer).
The above report also observes... There are reports that the Popular Front has been able in this brief period to post their people in the important Government agencies. The outfit is said to have at least 500 supporters or informers in the State police and their ranks range from those of mere constables to mere Deputy Superintendents.
NIA to investigate the sabotage of a train at Nilambur
Collectorate [Kochi] blast: police face extradition problems. Looks like the main culprit is clearly identified, but now hiding in Oman.
Anti Terrorist Squad would come up immideately (Mathrubhumi-Malayalam)
The state police is also now reforming an Anti-Terrorist Squad. It should be noted that there was an earlier squad which was later disbanded. There were allegations at that time that the investigations by the ATS was getting too close to the current ruling regime and its members, and they were losing their comfort.
Came back to say. Looks like some economy based war-fare has also started. Off course as noted in the article, this would lead to polarisation. There are very many number of RoPers in Kerala, who are into small businesses, or running some trade (workshops, smithy etc.).

Politics in Kerala Assembly discussions on terror
From P. Jayarajan (CPI-M), who initiated the arguments of the ruling LDF, to his party colleague A.C. Moideen, who spoke last from the treasury benches, they were of the view that the Congress and its allies were trying to either blow the issue out of proportion or gloss over its crucial dimensions such as the role of Hindu fanatics in fomenting terrorist violence in different parts of the country. {Is the Kerala Assembly discussing serious problems in kerala or issues in other parts of India ?}
Initiating the discussion, Mr. Mohammed asked the government to take serious cognisance of reports that Kerala was becoming the recruitment centre of terrorist outfits. The police, he felt, had failed in gathering information about terrorist activities in the State and wanted the government to do an introspection on what had gone wrong.
Mr. Jayarajan said Mr. Mohammed's attempt was to place the entire blame for terrorism on the shoulders of Muslims. Kerala, he said, was still not a haven for terrorists {It is becoming one. That's the point Mr. Jayarajan}and added that such talk was an insult to the people of Kerala.

Hmm.. After watching the news & media coverage for some time I am getting a feeling that soon this is also going to be a joke for the Keralites. The political bickering has started. The Min.of State for Home Mullapally Ramachandran now questions the wisdom of the State Govt. (and police) planning to ask NIA to investigate the train sabotage at Nilambur RS. Mr. Ramachandran quipped that if every case had to be investigated by the NIA what is K.P doing. So now it is blame game by a Cong. led Central Govt and CPI(M) led Kerala Govt.
The decision to hand over a case to NIA was taken after due diligence by the home minister and K.P top ranks. When they readily agree for a case to goto NIA, they would also have got valid reasons. But without even considering that the central minister have started his attempts to score brownie points.
The news media is covering the various raids and other police investigation with the same excitement with which it may cover the local temple or church festival. Lots of 2nd rung leaders have also got an oppurtunity to yap away to glory in front of various "news & current affairs" programmes. So soon these investigations may also fizzle out. For politicians it is back to scoring brownie points, the media would dig up for some other interesting news bits and the life would go on.
Mean while Ernakulam Rural police have given a notice to PDP groups in Ernakulam to cancel their "Freedom Parade". These chaps take out a parade on August 15th. They have their own funny uniforms, some rag-tag band out fits etc. And some of them also have that classic beards, which would make any one give a feel "is it a Pakistani army platoon, marching in India?"

Kerala: Is Church boycotting Muslim shops in Muvattupuzha?
Kerala's influential Catholic church has planned a silent boycott of Muslim-run shops in Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam and Thodupuzha areas following the chopping of Professor T D Joseph's palm by alleged Popular Front activists.
Sources in Muvattupuzha rediff.com say there is a silent movement spearheaded by the local parish with the support and connivance of the higher-ups in the community to boycott certain shops belonging to Muslims.
Sources in Thodupuzha said even without the Church's backing, the Roman Catholics of the area have stopped calling cabbies driven by Muslims and are even boycotting shops belonging to the Muslim community.
A senior police officer in Muvattupuzha said that unless immediate action is taken, communal polarisation could happen, which would have wider ramifications across the state.

Navy expressed surprise over why PFI was no keenly interested in the defence related activities. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In continuing crackdown on Muslim fanatic groups following the recent barbaric attack by alleged Popular Front of India activists on a Kerala lecturer, police on Monday recovered a sizeable quantity of explosives and other crude weapons from a vacant building in the premises of Manappuram mosque at Edakkad in Kannur district.
"Ten country-made bombs, swords, knives, cycle chains and rods were found in the building,'' Edappad SI KP Sunil Kumar told TOI. PFI flags and objectionable materials were recovered, he added.
Bomb disposal experts said the explosives were of high-intensity and could cause largescale damage. Only last week, police had seized 300 detonators and fuse wires from a private bus in Edakkad.
Raids on some PFI activists last week revealed that the outfit tried to infiltrate its men into an exhibition organised by Navy in Kochi. It was also found that PFI took undue interest in a mock anti-terror drill jointly conducted by Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Kerala Police in October 2009. Maps of at least three temples and CDs of Al-Qaida and Taliban training were also seized.
Kerala assembly on Monday discussed the recent spurt in terror activities. Participating in the debate, home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the state would ask NIA to take up the probe into the recent sabotage attempt on a train in Nilambur. The trains brake pipes were found broken on July 8, just before it was to leave Nilambur for Shornur.
Congress leader Aryadam Mohammed said Taliban-style courts were operating in the state and that one such court had ordered chopping off of lecturer TJ Joseph's right hand. Chief minister VS Achutanandan called a high-level meeting which is expected to discuss the formation of a new anti-terror squad in the state.

Naval officials collect details of PFI meeting
Staff Reporter
KOCHI: Commodore M.R. Ajayakumar, Naval Officer in-charge, Kerala, and Commanding Officer, INS Venduruthy, along with Commander V.B. Naik of the Naval Police, met senior Kerala Police officials and collected information about a recent meeting of the Popular Front of India (PFI) held in Aluva. The visit came in the light of information that the minutes book of the PFI meeting had mentions about the Navy fest here and about public access to the Naval base during that period. The Naval officers came over to collect the information, after they were alerted to the book's contents.
The naval officials met City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham and then proceeded to Aluva. The Aluva police had found the book during a search for suspects involved in the assault on T.J. Joseph, Professor at Newman College, Thodupuzha.
The inquiry made by the Navy will provide a national angle to the ongoing investigation against suspected seditious activities of the PFI, a senior police official said.
The police said the PFI meeting was learnt to have discussed issues such as the starting of a Police Commissionerate here, which would provide magisterial powers to the City Police Commissioner. The participants at the meeting seemed to have discussed the impact of a decision to give the right to issue gun licence to the City Police Commissioner under the new system, thereby blocking the possibility of seeking licence from different offices as it is now.

Re: Internal Security Watch
Kerala is getting national attention.
Jihad's Southern Outpost
Jihad's Southern Outpost
SS there you have the answer......
However, the most shocking plans of the ISI came to light last week when the Kerala Police raided the house of Mansoor, the Popular Front’s Ernakulam district secretary. The raid unearthed the minutes of the outfit’s meetings, which spoke of plans to monitor the preparedness of the Indian Navy at the Southern Naval Command, Kochi (There were reports that David Headley’s associate Tahawwur Hussein Rana had photographed the Naval installations in Kochi extensively). The plan was to sneak into the Defence exhibition at Kochi’s naval base and collect as much information as possible. However, this plan failed.
That is not all. Sometime back, the Kochi Police had carried out a mock security drill in the city jointly with the Navy, RAW and IB to realistically assess the preparedness of the Forces to counter any terror attack. The documents seized from Mansoor’s house had reportedly contained details of this drill and a declaration that the mock drill would soon become a practical reality, which could only mean that Kochi could witness a terror strike. Security agencies are now asking among themselves the ominous question: Who were behind this?
The raid at Mansoor’s house had reportedly yielded documents that spoke of huge sums of money being pumped into the Popular Front from abroad. Officials say that a cursory look at the documents proved at least Rs 1 crore had been collected in the past one year. Security agencies are now on the trail of these funds. As serious as these revelations is the reported recovery of some disgusting campaign material of Al-Qaeda-Taliban from another Popular Front leader, Kunjumon. These CDs contained visuals of terror men executing the sentences of the Islamic courts of Al Qaeda and Taliban, decapitation of girls and women and repulsive mutilation of their bodies in the midst of cheering terror-mongers. Sleuths say that the Popular Front’s July 4 attack on a college professor at Muvattupuzha was a direct import of this terror method. The professor’s right hand was cut off allegedly for preparing a question paper that blasphemed Prophet Muhammad.
Re: Internal Security Watch
Viqaruddin Ahmed, five associates arrested
Among the arrested Viqaruddin's associates were an Ayurvedic doctor Mohammed Haneef from Gujarat, and Syed Amjad, Zakir, Riaz and Sayeed, all from the city. While Viqaruddin and Amjad took part in the attacks on policemen at Falaknuma in 2009 and Shahalibanda two months ago, others aided and abetted them. The duo admitted to police that they had shot dead a constable in Gujarat in 2007 while looting a bank.
Police records say Viqaruddin, hailing from Malakpet, was initially associated with the Darsgah Jihad-O-Shahadat -- a religious fundamentalist organisation from old city.
He differed with some leaders of the DJS over the persons responsible for Mecca Masjid bomb attack, went underground and formed the Tehreek Ghalba-e-Islam.
Investigation revealed that he was not directly connected to any terrorist outfits like Laskhar-e-Taiba.

Sleuths say that the Popular Front’s July 4 attack on a college professor at Muvattupuzha was a direct import of this terror method. The professor’s right hand was cut off allegedly for preparing a question paper that blasphemed Prophet Muhammad.
Never imagined that even my hometown ( Bengaluru) will one day turn into a war zone within this century!!!
Re: Internal Security Watch
very intensive buildup and training phase seems to be ongoing in north kerala and adjacent belt in coastal & north karnataka ending in hyderabad. perhaps the plan is start co-ordination with naxals in central and eastern india as well for arms and secure training areas. money can always be pumped in via fake charities and businesses fronting for gulf based channels.
Re: Internal Security Watch
Just to add on. The two areas are also infamous for the large-scale usage of false passports, especially by folks who travel to and from the Gelf. Infact there is even a joke about a Kasargod Embassy, which specialised in giving out these fake passports. The whole area from Kasaragod in Kerala right up to Mangalore, I feel needs a thorough watch. And I am sure the agencies would be doing that already.Singha wrote:very intensive buildup and training phase seems to be ongoing in north kerala and adjacent belt in coastal & north karnataka
Re: Internal Security Watch
Might be OT.
Why is Kerala hanging on to Kasargod. It rightfully belongs to Karnataka.Border issues between states are sensitive. But North Kerala is mohammedan stronghold.Kasargod being in Karnataka is safer than being a part of kerala.I hope the nationalists in kerala see the light.

Re: Internal Security Watch
I agree to the above comment, Kasaragod'ians are a notorious lot. There were times when some were refused entry since there was no sureity they would be goign back after visa expiry! As anyone in Dubai and they would know this place!
Iam a native of Mangalore-Kasaragod border region.....there is no doubt a lot of money being pumped in here from 'gelf'. Wait for another 10-15 years and there is going to be a allout conflict. Rop is trying to outsmart others by grabbing as much land and businesses for themselves as possible. Lot of mapillas (kerala muslims) from kasaragod are settling in the mangalore region after buying land. Most of them are well to do and spend most of their time exclusively in the newly built malls and supermarkets. most of which belong to the Rop'ers even though having western or hindu names. Maybe its way of keeping the flow of money 'halal'.
Among the original Rop'ers of Mangalore are Bearys and Saiber. Bearys are closely related to Mapillas (traces of arab blood) but speak a mix of kannada, malayalam and tulu. These guys are relatively less rich (money wise) when compared to the average mapilla. However few of them are very affluent and own a lot of property.
Saiber i think are shias (relate to tippu, haider ali ), speak urdu, are well to do and i believe are the most progressive of the 3. They tend to integrate better into soceity. They seem to be getting overshadowed by the Bearys and Mapillas

Re: Internal Security Watch
The northern part of kasaragod (north of river Chandragiri) no doubt belongs to Karnataka...... the Mahajan comity report suggests the same toosvenkat wrote:Might be OT.
