Cartosat 2B launch scheduled for 12th July 2010
Re: Cartosat 2B launch scheduled for 12th July 2010
Area that could have been imaged today
Putting up the Tracks that Carto2b will cover today around India.
Hopefully they will cover one of these pass ( Generally it is a practice to use central path , but not a norm ).

By the way a confession : There are seven objects ( including the launch rocket components of last stage ) presently orbiting around the same path that I have drawn in this figure.
Which is the exact Carto2b out of that lot is not known to me right now .. hence I have bluffed that it is Carto 2b although it could be studsat/alsat or any of the other 'bhais' of carto2b. But all are very near to each other so there should not be a gross difference.
Will post more accurate figures once there is more clarity in who is who. Till such time please bear with me.

People feel enthusiasm about going into space!
Gentlemen, think more about motivating the youth! (And throwing a bone to us jingos)
Launch trajectory calculations aren't so rigid that they can't accommodate the reality of variations in payload mass from one flight to the next. Neither are designs so frozen that there haven't been new variants of PSLV which have yet to fly. Were there any tests of PSLV-XL before the Chandrayaan-1 launch? PSLV is a mature design which can easily incorporate such changes.
The whole nation faithfully tunes in to see such launches, in order to be part of the experience. People would like to drink in even more, if it could only be provided.
This latest launch may not be of tremendous significance, but the ones which represent historic milestones need to be preserved for posterity. How will future generations be able to experience the arduous climbs of the past? There needs to be more recorded footage, even just for archival purposes.
Onboard camera footage doesn't have to merely consist of a large exhaust plume filling the full camera view. A panoramic camera could even be used, to give a much wider field of view.
As has been pointed out, video footage can gather valuable clues relating to a malfunction.
Even the Moon Impactor Probe on Chandrayaan-1 had a camera running during its descent, although obviously the spin-stabilization made it useless for ordinary viewing purposes. I hope that the Chandrayaan-2 lander will give Indians a nice visual foretaste of landing on the Moon.

TIsat-1 beacon signal as heard during it´s first day of operation (July, 12; 2010) after launch in India by PSLV-C-15. TIsat is an educational Swiss cubesat and the reception was made in Sao Paulo Brazil on 70 cm UHF amateur radio band. For more experimental satellites, check AMSAT on internet.
A small update from my previous post.
Refer my earlier post regarding identifying the objects launched by PSLV.
As on date Cartosat2B and ALSAT2A have been identified ( naming of other objects is yet to be published ) .. but both are almost at the same place ( within 100kms or so from each other ) so there is no point in drawing their paths separately .. hence not done.
Will update further later.

Re: Area that could have been imaged today
Sorry for nitpicking, but the map of India is wrong as it does not show the proper area of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.SSSalvi wrote:Putting up the Tracks that Carto2b will cover today around India.

Edit: removed the link to the image from this post of mine.

I edited the photo, to reflect correct boundaries, was tempted a little to actually remove the line between POWI, India and BD. But, how to upload this correct pic now or send it to you?SSSalvi wrote:@chandrashekhar_m

The graphic is not made by drawing lines on a map by me .. it is cut and paste from the screenshot generated by orbit analysis software.chandrasekhar.m wrote:I edited the photo, to reflect correct boundaries, was tempted a little to actually remove the line between POWI, India and BD. I had not switched off the political boundaries option because it provides some insight about the location of orbits w.r.t india. This was orbit specific and hence no serious political correctness was thought for this scientific application.
Anyway in future posts I will take care to avoid political boundaries.
For uploading your image you have to sign up with some image hosting site ( I use photobucket ) and after you have uploaded the image it will provide you a link for including in your post.

chandrasekhar garu,
There was no intention to represent political boundaries. So no need for further exploration here.

Current relative positions of various objects launched by PSLVC15.
Cart2B, Studsat and Alsat2A have been marked. Remaining who is who is yet to be known.
Notice that Alsat is separated from the other lot .. it is being located as per Algerian requirements.

The scientists presented the prime minister with a replica of the PSLV rocket and pictures taken by the state-of-the-art panchromatic camera onboard the Cartosat-2B satellite.

A line from the above:dinesha wrote:PM Manmohan Singh hosts lunch for space scientists

National security adviser Shivshankar Menon was also present.
That line explains why the image acquisition was not made public.
Refer my post on 29apr in this thread :
So it appears that everything is ok as far as this mission is concerned and let's be happy. Now its brother Cartosat 2B will be launched and in the same fashion we will not know later what happens.
Finally ... ISRO announces and publishes TWO images..
ISRO has put a one sentence curt message ( something like " mera bolne ka kam maine kar diya hai .. khush ho jao .. no argument .. get lost )
http://isro.org/pressrelease/scripts/pr ... Jul21_2010
They were kind enough to imclude 2 images also :The CARTOSAT-2B satellite, which was successfully launched by PSLV-C15 on July 12, 2010, into a polar sun-synchronous orbit, is working satisfactorily. The initial phase of operations of the satellite has been successfully completed. The camera has been switched on, and images of high quality are being received.

Very nice photos - I don't think I've seen boundaries as crisp as in the photo of Madurai city from ISRO images in the public domain before.
Well done, Cartosat and PSLV teams!
