Nawaz Sharif and Ahmadis
Daily Islam quoted PMLN leader Nawaz Sharif as saying that Ahmadis were an asset of Pakistan. He also called them his ‘brothers’ and advised Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take the massacre of the Ahmadis in Lahore as a test case for his administration. He condemned the attacks on the worshipping places of the Ahmadis.
Nawaz Sharif retreats
Daily Pakistan reported that PMLN leader Nawaz Sharif responded to the objections raised by the clerics on his calling Ahmadis his brothers, by saying that he was prepared to die for the honour of the Prophet PBUH and that he would consider himself lucky if he died defending it. {AoA}
Hang Sarabjit for Kasab!
Leader of a Pakistan Think Tank in Europe Masud Iqbal was quoted by daily Pakistan as saying that Pakistan should kill Sarabjit Singh – the Indian spy caught by Pakistan – if the Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab is hanged in India. He said India was involved in doing terrorism to destabilise Pakistan.
Was Allama Iqbal an Ahmadi?
Writing in Express Abbas Athar stated that in a TV discussion Prof Mehdi Hasan stated that Allama Iqbal was greatly impressed by the founder of the Ahmadis Ghulam Ahmad and thought him a great Muslim scholar. Some thought that Allama had turned away from Ahmadi faith in 1931 while some others thought that he did so in 1908.
A record in learning Quran by heart
Daily Islam revealed that the number of those wishing to learn the Quran by heart had increased at a stunning speed in Pakistan. Only in the exams managed by Wifaqul Madaris in Multan annually, 57,000 hufaaz (memorisers) will seek to pass the degree. Other madrassas are seen increasing number of boys opting for memorising. In the last ten years the trend had broken all records in history.
Call them Qadiani!
Chief Editor daily Jinnah stated that Ahmadis should not be called Ahmadis because Ahmad was the name of the Holy Prophet PBUH. They should instead be called Qadiani. He advised Nawaz Sharif that Ahmadis could not be called friends as Nawaz Sharif had called them. They will be friends after they have embraced Islam and left their religion.
Al-Rehmat Trust collects ‘ushr’
Peshawar weekly Al Qalam stated that Al Rehmat Trust had ended its two month campaign to collect ushr from farmers all over Pakistan. Ushr is 10 percent of the farm produce. Already in South Punjab most religious institutions close down in order to go out and collect ushr. The money is spent on the wounded mujahideen and on families of the martyred mujahideen. (Ushr, which means ten, is collected at 10 percent from rain-fed areas and 5 percent from canal-fed areas. In Pakistan the rate for rain-fed areas is 5 percent while the barani areas are exempted.) {I was not aware of this systematic and huge collection by terror groups}
Ulema and Nawaz Sharif
Daily Jinnah and daily Islam quoted leaders of the religious parties as condemning Nawaz Sharif for calling the Ahmadis his brothers. Liaquat Baloch and Farid Paracha of Jamaat Islami, and Ghafur Haideri of the JUI stated that Sharif’s statement was made to please Western masters (maghrabi aqa). Maulana Haneef Jalundhari of the major Deobandi madrassa in Multan said Ahmadis could not be good Pakistanis and praising them would a contravention of the Constitution.![]()
General Zia and Ahmadis
Writing in Express Abbas Athar stated that General Zia imposed disabilities on the Ahmadis that violated universal laws of tolerance of faiths. He went to the extent of preventing Ahmadis from saying As-Salamu Alaikam (greetings) on the pain of a prison sentence. The followers of Judaism before Islam had the same greeting as the Muslims.
Some great Ahmadis
Daily Express stated that Ahmadis produced some great Pakistanis: Foreign Minister Zafrullah Khan, Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, 1965 war heroes Maj-Gen Akhtar Malik, Brigadier Abdul Ali Malik, and hero of Rann of Kutch of 1971 and winner of Hilal-e-Juraat Major General Nasir Ahmad Chaudhry who was killed in Model Town by terrorists on 28 May 2010.

A team had gone there in order to facilitate supply of food and other household goods. In Lahore Jamaatud Dawa held rallies in four locations protesting against insult to the honour of the Prophet PBUH.

So one could have following threads
- TSP Thread for day to day news and discussions of the situation within Pakistan
- Managing Pakistan's Failure for long term evaluation and prescriptions for Pakistan's failure
- India's Official Pakistan Policy for commentary on how GoI deals with Pakistan, including how the civilian GoP deals with GoI.

Rudradev the decrease in infiltration was linked to several things.Rudradev wrote: I refer you to the data. Parakram utterly reversed all trends of Pakistani infiltration into Kashmir. It enabled India to hold the first successful democratic elections in Kashmir, with a nearly 70% turnout, since 1989. It quieted things down to the extent that we were able to kill off huge numbers of previously infiltrated terrorists in the valley, and to build a fence along the LOC that further minimized infiltration.
One was the increasing usage of surveillance devices as well as night vision devices.
Completion of the fence was aided by an agreement with Mushy that put an end to artillery duels that were being used as cover to infiltrate terrorists.
An improved political situation in Kashmir.
To it is not clear that a reactive and previously unplanned army mobilization as a result of an attack on the Parliament did all this.
Here are the Kashmir militancy stats from SATP.org

Pakistan has been torn between two fronts since the idea of Pakistan was mooted. One of borderless universal ummah and the other of a territorially bound nation-state. In either case, Islam and Power go together. That was why they demanded power to be restored to them when Paramountcy lapsed. When their mood swings towards 'ummah', they speak of Arab ancestry or Sayid ancestry because that is powerful. When it swings the other way, they have to speak of how they have Rajput blood (Ms. BB) etc. Then, it has to come from Hindustan.
Now, one can see the bipolar disorder the poor Pakistanis suffer from.

Regardless of whether India should consider this path or not, it is new thinking in the Pakistani side. How can Pakistan get itself out of this situation? The answer is simple: Don't look at the Indus Water Treaty for solutions. The treaty is based on a sort of divide-the-resource-of-the-Indus-Basin theory, which will always result in a zero-sum game for Pakistan. What we need is to look outside the "divide the resource" paradigm and look towards the opportunities afforded by the "sharing the resource" paradigm. What we need to do is see whether it is in the economic, social or political interest of both riparians to cooperate on water, rather than be antagonistic over it. What we need is a trans-boundary water opportunity analysis.
Trans-boundary analysis looks at the positive sum outcomes of sharing the resources of a water basin. The approach is unique, in that it allows the weaker riparian to offer the hegemon some additional benefit.
The idea would be to conduct a full-spectrum trans-boundary water opportunity analysis that will identify the areas where cooperation between India and Pakistan over the waters of the Indus Basin will yield in economic, social or other benefits. For example, if India is building run-of-the-river dams on the western rivers, this need not be a cause of alarm in Pakistan. After all, what keeps Pakistan from purchasing the electricity from India? We are more than willing to pay an extortionately high cost for electricity from diesel-powered rental power projects when everyone knows hydroelectric power is a fraction of the cost.

Militants looking to trigger Indo-Pak conflict, warns US
NEW DELHI - Top US diplomatic and military officials warned Thursday of fresh attempts by militant groups to push nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan into a military conflict.
The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, said he feared extremists would attempt another operation similar to the 2008 Mumbai attacks in order to goad India into armed retaliation against its neighbor and arch-rival.
Mullen said the Mumbai carnage, which India blamed on the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant outfit, had demonstrated how a small group of extremists could have a “strategic impact”.
“One of the things that struck me then and is still of great concern is that those terrorists could bring two countries closer (to a possible conflict),” he told reporters on board his plane bound for New Delhi.
India suspended a peace dialogue with Pakistan in the wake of the Mumbai attacks, which claimed 166 lives, and the two countries have only recently begun to explore a resumption of structured talks.
“I’ve worried a great deal about a repeat attack, of something like that,” Mullen said, adding that he wanted “to focus on making sure this doesn’t happen again.”
Mullen began a two-day visit to India Thursday that coincided with a visit by the US special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke.
Speaking earlier to reporters in Delhi, Holbrooke said the LeT was just one of a number of regional outfits, along with the Pakistani and Afghan Taliban, looking to destabilize South Asia. “They seem to be growing closer together ... (and) their long-term objective is the same: to create the maximum number of problems between India and Pakistan ... to create a crisis,” Holbrooke said. Both men said combating the LeT was a top priority. “I see them starting to emerge as a larger regional-to-global – at least aspirational – global threat,” Mullen said.
India accuses Pakistan of failing to crack down sufficiently on groups like the LeT that operate from bases on its territory, and Indian officials were expected to highlight the same charge during talks with Holbrooke and Mullen.
Meetings were also expected to focus on military cooperation and the situation in Afghanistan, where India is concerned about what it perceives as growing Pakistani influence.
Holbrooke rejected the suggestion that India was somehow being sidelined by Pakistani involvement in the Afghan government’s plans for reconciliation and reintegration of the Taliban and other groups. “You cannot stabilize Afghanistan without the participation of Pakistan as a legitimate concerned party,” he said. – AFP

Pakistan Extends Gen. Kayani's Term
This guy scares me. Get the feeling he is preparing for a war anyone. or in TSP terms strategic over reach.Pakistan's civilian government late Thursday extended the term of army chief General Ashfaq Kayani for three more years to ensure continuity in the military leadership at a crucial stage in the country's battle against Islamic militants.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in a televised speech.
"The decision is taken to maintain continuity in the military's command as the country is passing through very critical times," Mr. Gilani said.
Gen. Kayani, 58 years old, was appointed army chief in December 2007 and was to retire at the end of the year under normal tenure limitations.

India today conveyed its serious concerns over the US military aid to Pakistan being misused against it and asked America to establish a "monitoring mechanism" to ensure that this does not happen.
Defence Minister A K Antony during his meeting with US Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen here also expressed his apprehensions that American arms aid was disproportionate to the war on terror for which it was meant, Defence Ministry sources said here.

Smiles replace aggressive stares at Wagah
India’s Border Security Force and Pakistan Rangers have agreed to avoid aggressive acts of fist-gesture and thumb-showing during the daily flag-lowering ceremony that takes place at Wagah, though the Rangers would like to continue other features of the parade like foot-pressing and leg-stretching.
Weak SDRE soldiers cannot handle foot stomping now look at our mujahids“We had proposed a lowering of the aggression in the gestures during the daily parade, and subsequently took a unilateral decision to implement that,” senior BSF officer Himmat Singh was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times. “Now, the Pakistan Rangers have also agreed to the proposal, and toned down their drill,” he said.
According to BSF, boot-stomping resulted in guards on both sides suffering ‘mild-to-severe’ damage to joints in the lower half of their bodies, particularly the knees.
now that is what I call gaziThe Pakistan Rangers spokesman said that strong intensity of foot-cum-legwork had no impact on Rangers’ soldiers as the latter never suffered such injuries.
Citing an example of Pakistan Rangers’ physical fitness, he said Rangers’ Naik Tariq, who is considered the most active soldier for the legwork exercise from both sides, suffered critical bone fractures in a road accident a year ago.
But after regaining health and ignoring the doctor’s advice he rejoined the duty as parade solider and was currently performing in the same manner as he did before the accident.
