Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed Americans on Wednesday to donate money to flood relief efforts in Pakistan, saying she is leading by example and just made a $10 donation herself.
“I just texted a contribution myself, because we know from our own experience, particularly in Haiti, small donations can add up to make a big difference,” Clinton told reporters on Wednesday.
“Americans have always shown great generosity to people facing crises worldwide. So I urge Americans to join this effort and send some much needed help to the people of Pakistan.”
Clinton urged people to text the word “SWAT” to the number, 50555, and reply “yes” when asked to confirm, in order to make a $10 donation to help the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.
The money will be put toward providing tents, clothing, food, clean drinking water and medicine to the more than 3 million people affected by the massive flooding in the Swat Valley, Clinton said.
Wonder what makes ROPers choose Mosques and nearby places for their peaceful acts...is it to quickly run over for a repentance or is it that they get the inspiration to be peaceful and the adrenalin surge from there?
Aga Khan on Arabic as National Language of Pakistan
I will be surprised if this report is authentic. Aga Khan is the Imam of Ismaeilis and they speak language called Kutchi..very similar to Gujarati (~90+%). They are (it seems per wiki) Shia. This Arab/Sunni shift is certainly news....can you post the link?
KARACHI: A hand-grenade attack inside a North Nazimabad mosque during prayers on Wednesday night left five people injured as the daylong violence which included arson attacks and incidents of firing claimed at least 22 more lives, raising the death toll to 76 in three days.Police said at least two men in shirts and jeans and wearing helmets stopped their motorbike at the Sawari Masjid and Madressah Shams-ul-Uloom in Block N of North Nazimabad and one of them entered the premises.“The Isha prayers were in progress when he hurled a hand grenade which exploded in the middle of the third row,” said an official at the Taimuria police station. “The men escaped, leaving five people injured in the mosque. The injured were taken to the Abbassi Shaheed Hospital and their condition was said to be stable, he said. Allama Maulana Ghulam Ahmed Siyalwi, a religious scholar and senior member of Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan (JUP), was among the injured. He is the patron-in-chief of the seminary attached to the mosque.
5. Now people in America see Pakistan more as part of the Middle East than the growing region of Asia. “Asia now comprises countries such as India, China, Japan and Vietnam for us,” he said. “We see Asia as the center of growth in the future with the Pacific being the ocean of world politics and not the Atlantic.” However, Pakistan has a key position as far as Afghanistan is concerned.
AoA!
Finally one paki dream come true - Pakis are certified araps!
As soon as the plane touched down, the president and his Very Important coterie were chauffeured in a dozen luxury vehicles to a five-star hotel where the president will be staying in a £7,000 ($11,160) per night Royal Suite.
His welcome, however, was less than royal. On the drive to the hotel, protesters held placards reading "Zardari King of Thieves," "Zardari 100% Pure Corruption," and "GO Zardari GO." While Zardari was schmoozing with his cronies in luxe London hotels, Pakistan was reeling from the deadliest floods to hit the country in 80 years. In short, it looks like Zardari's Katrina.
In a move that has New Delhi working overtime . . .
I don't understand why Indian mandarins should work overtime on this request. This request has been with the GoI for many months now. A decision should have been taken already.

Actually, the Ismailis split into the Nizaris and the Bohras.
The Bohras in India speak Gujarati, the Nizaris are split into Kutchi- and Gujarati-speaking clans.
Kutchi is very dissimilar in the spoken form from Gujarati, it is very similar to Sindhi.
I am working as a postgraduate student and medical officer at Liaquat University of Medicine and Health Sciences. Recently, at the end of my training, and as I am interested in emergency medicine, I joined the intensive care unit to deliver whatever I had learned to the patients.
However, it’s becoming a routine to watch doctors being beaten so badly and callously that we sometimes feel it was our mistake to have joined this profession. Doctors are known as messiahs, but due to this horrible treatment we are on the edge.
Whenever I heard about the mistreatment of a doctor I waited for my turn, which came the other day.
I was beaten by unknown persons in the ICU in front of the hospital administration without any reason. I did not expect anyone to come forward to save me. Of course no one has ever done so as no one thinks we are worth much. We work tirelessly for 18 hours, seven days a week, are easily available and are not expected to react to whatever happens to us. The government gives us a Rs20,000 stipend without any protection.
On that day not only was my shirt torn to pieces but my heart, my ego, self-respect and prestige were also trampled under their boots. Everything was broken. The wounds I received will never be healed. Since that day I am overcome by flashbacks of that incident.
Many of us have left or are about to leave the profession. I am making a very simple request to the authorities concerned: please stop all this.
Factually incorrect in above article about Kashmir:
"India won the subsequent war, and continues to hold most of the old princely state."
India controls just 45% of the total Kashmir area. The rest is with TSP and China.
India controls 101,338 km2 (39,127 sq mi) of the territory, Pakistan 85,846 km2 (33,145 sq mi) and China, the remaining 37,555 km2 (14,500 sq mi).
The right statement is "Although India won the Kashmir war and Kashmir state legally acceded to India, still most of Kashmir is illegally occupied by either TSP or China "
But India controls the part of Kashmir that matters, i.e. the valley, with most of the population and the capital. Packees and taller than friends control barren mountain ranges and a few villages/hamlets. Number of square kilometers does not tell the whole story.
Incidentally this is why India is in favor of status quo while Packees are constantly raging about Kashmir.

According to some reports, over 10 terrorist groups have reunited in the face of the crackdown being launched against the militants. These groups have had their differences in the past but now they have found a common enemy in the state of Pakistan. Thus, their decision to work together should not come as a surprise because a nexus between the TTP, SSP and the LeJ is a logical possibility. These militant outfits have always had an ideological and theological nexus but it was only because of the differences within the leadership that they were operating separately.
Friends, the truth is that we have never forgotten the Taliban and other such terror groups as our ‘strategic assets’. And there are people — powerful people at that — who we meet every day who refuse to accept that any such group actually poses any threat to us.{It is the same gung-ho confidence that the PA, which after all refelects the national psyche, has in its ability to control the Taliban and the sectarian and terrorist groups} The only way to win Afghanistan over is to win the hearts and minds there. If there is any part of Afghanistan we want to colonise, it should be the hearts of our Afghan brethren. Similarly, Pakistan needs to stop its regional pipedreams and think of reforms at home. And there goes your strategic asset with a poof. Is it our misfortune or that whatever we commission as our strategic weapon, may it be our nukes or our non-state actor pals, it turns against us and proves to be our weakness, not strength?
A Canadian accused by the US of supplying weapons to al-Qaeda has been freed in Toronto after a judge refused to extradite him to the US......Mr Khadr was arrested in Pakistan in October 2004 after the CIA offered Pakistani authorities a $500,000 (£314,000) bounty.
The US accused him of procuring weapons, including mine components and rocket-propelled grenades, for al-Qaeda to use against coalition forces in Afghanistan.
He returned to Canada after about a year in Pakistani custody, and in December 2005 was arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at US request.
The US sought to extradite him to face charges.
On Wednesday, Superior Court Judge Christopher Speyer halted extradition proceedings, effectively denying the US bid.

WASHINGTON: About 77 million people go hungry in Pakistan while 36 per cent of the population are afflicted by poverty, says a new report released on Wednesday.
And jernails sitting in GHQ want submarines, AWACS, JF bandaar, f solah and all other multi billion goodies
The numbers mentioned above are comming out of some ones musharraf. 77 million is like 77/180*100 = 43%. so how can the % of poor be less then the % of people going hungry. Should in not be other way arround.
So far, Pakistan has four nations accusing it of sponsoring terrorism presently; Afghanistan, India, Britain and Canada. There may soon be a fifth country joining the chorus; Pakistan’s dear ally, the United States of America.
Premchand was one of the 152 passengers killed in plane crash in Islamabad.
Was it ignorance, oversight or bigotry? This is the question doing the rounds on the Internet as young Pakistanis come to terms with the coffin of Premchand — one of the 152 passengers killed in last week's plane crash in Islamabad – being labelled ‘kafir' (non-believer).
A bit of everything seems to be the answer from the discussion triggered on various websites. The reactions range from remorse and disgust at denying the youngster respect in death, to anger at why an issue is being made of what may have just been a clerical error.
Premchand, a social worker from Sanghar in Sindh, was among the six members of the Youth Parliament killed in the plane crash. What made his death stand out was what happened later. Summing it up, the first post on the online discussion forum ‘pakistaniat.com' said: “His death — like the death of everyone on that flight — was a matter of national tragedy; the treatment of his dead body a matter of national disgrace.”
Friends who identified Premchand's body were quoted by news reports as saying that the coffin came marked ‘kafir
.' The word literally means ‘infidel' or ‘non-believer,' but it is seen as an insult in these parts. “It was shocking. He could have been marked as Hindu or non-Muslim, but using the word ‘kafir' is the worst example of intolerance.”
Muneeb Afzal, a member of the Youth Parliament (MYP) said, recalling that the night before the crash he had received greetings from Premchand to mark the 15th of Shabaan.
Pouring out the angst felt by his friends, the post on pakistaniat.com adds: “Literally labelling someone's coffin ‘kafir' and not even giving them the respect to list their religion by its proper name is a shameful and disgusting way to disrespect the last remains of anyone. All the more so, the last remains of a patriotic Pakistani who was on that plane solely to represent Pakistan and to seek to be a better Pakistani – he was on his way to the ‘session' of the Youth Parliament!”

At a grocer's shop there were a mice everywhere. People didn't want to come to his shop anymore.
So, the grocer kept a cat. She chased the mice and ate some each day. The mice had no chance to feed on anything more.
Troubled by the cat, mice held a meeting to get rid of the cruel animal as she killed them ruthlessly and their number was falling down. Each mouse suggested his idea but all ideas were rejected, as they were not practicable.
At last, a young mouse suggested to tie a bell round the cat's neck when she was fast asleep so that when she would move, the bell shall ring and warn them of the danger. So, they will run to safety.
Everybody approved the idea but the question was- who will bell the cat?
All the mice looked at each other in despair and the meeting got over.
Not sure how long the welcome is going to last, if Walter Mead says such things on his current trip to Pakistan:
Henry Kissinger - Senior Fellow for US foreign policy at Council on Foreign Relations and a Professor at Yale University, Walter Russell Mead talking to a group of journalists here Tuesday ... urged Pakistan to change its policies, strategy and attitude towards its neighbours.
He suggested that Pakistan should adopt new strategy to deal with India in the present circumstances as every developed country in the world including US wanted to have good relations with India due to its role as economic giant in the region in future.
Referring to Pakistan’s relations with India, Russell said, due to Pakistan’s policies, India is in a better position and getting benefit while Pakistan remained in more trouble especially due to the issue of terrorism.
“Its time to look into for basic changes by Pakistan to improve its relations in the region,” he added.
Answering a question about India’s involvement in East Pakistan in 1971, Russell Mead said that situation could not be compared with present day situation as the whole world now wanted to have good and strong relations with India due to its economic growth.

Kissinger will be turning in his bed and wetting his diaper listening to what Mead is saying about India.
Talking about role of China in the region, Russell said, the region is emerging into a stable region, and he did not see any chance of conflict.
I don't know about the stable part, but for sure given the pits TSP is in, I sense that TSPA/ISI are not going to provoke a conflict with India at the moment. For one, it won't get the kind of support it needs from its 3.5 friends. But the move is afoot by the 3.5 to stabilize this abomination. TSP's immediate strategy seems to be to get India to talk Kashmir. Thats why its stone-pelting strategy. With some nudging from TSP's 3.5, and of course India's RNIs like Siddarth Varadarjan & Co forcing India to go on guilt trip, India might oblige.
Oh, I don’t know, maybe the Obama adminsistration actually thinks we should now pay the Taliban to kill us. Nothing would surprise me at this point.Hillary wants us all to text a $10 contribution for the Swat Valley, the region in Pakistan that is controlled by the Taliban because they got nailed by flooding. Well, at least Mother nature has the cojones to attack the Islamist terrorist mass murdering beasts! That’s right–the Secretary of State wants the American public, the people whose loved ones are serving in Afghanistan, to give relief money to the very people who are murdering our troops almost every day.

The Wikileaks have achieved one thing, that is - more people are now openly calling out Pakistan. Earlier, it was kind of hush-hush, the experts and analysts knew, but nobody talked about it. Now it is kind of free for all in the public domain.
