A strategic shift towards extremism

The silent majority in Pakistan is not moderate

Move over Wikileaks, the sit-back-and-take-notice piece of information comes from Pew Global Attitudes Project. It’s latest report on attitudes towards extremism shows just how bad the world’s Pakistan problem is.

We are used to hearing the cliche that the majority of Pakistanis are moderate. Well, this is what the survey shows:

Pakistanis overwhelmingly support making segregation of men and women in the workplace the law in their country (85%), and comparable percentages favor instituting harsh punishments such as stoning people who commit adultery (82%), whippings and cutting off of hands for crimes like theft and robbery (82%), and the death penalty for those who leave the Muslim religion (76%). Support for gender segregation and for severe punishments is pervasive across all demographic and regional groups.

This link deserves to be in the 1st post of this thread.

The Arabic language does not have a letter in the Arabic alphabet to make the P sound, which is why a lot of Arabs who are not exposed to English (or other languages that have the P sound) continue to pronounce words that begin with 'P', such as Pen or Pencil, as Ben, Bencil.

But typically the usage of the word 'Bakistani' by Indians is deliberate and in a derogatory context (most often seen on one notorious Indian forum), given that Indian languages do not suffer from the same limitation that Arabic does.
Anyone knows which notorious forum they are talking about?

Creeping Cold War between Presidency & GHQ
This cold war is seemingly escalating and the strongest defender of the president, PPP’s Fauzia Wahab, has almost spilled the beans by bursting out on TV channels that the Army was not following the policies of the political leadership and the ISI chief canceled his visit to the UK on his own, without consulting the political government leadership. {We just saw the DT Editorial today which said that the Frontier Corps acts independently and out of government control in Balochistan, thwarting the civilian government's peace efforts. And, now, this. Slowly, the commentators, editors and analysts in Pakistan are speaking the reality.}

“There are differences and such differences are common everywhere. Even in America this happens,” she said without mincing words. “We have to go on even if differences are there. Each (institution) has its own perception and has its own point of view. What do you want the president to do, follow what the ISI was saying?” she asked.

Fauzia Wahab went two steps ahead and blamed the Army not just for insubordination but bypassing the democratic leadership and process just when Interior Minister Rehman Malik was announcing that the Army could be called in Karachi once again to restore peace and some order. She even raised objections to and mentioned the statement issued by the GHQ on the Kerry-Lugar Bill.

Question: how long will it take for this Dong Feng 21D aircraft carrier killer missile to make it to Pakistan, and how will it change the balance of naval power?

Karachi, Aug.6 (ANI): The Pakistan Army has been accused of bypassing all laws while acquiring huge land pieces to set up cantonments in various different parts of Swat
"We told the army that this is our source of livelihood but they said there was no possibility of the government acceding to our demand of not building a garrison in this area," The Dawn quoted a local resident Sher Khan, as saying.
A local political leader, who refused to be named, termed the price set by the military for as a big 'joke'.

"Paying 73 rupees per square foot for fertile land of Swat is a joke being played on the Swati people. It is less than you pay for a square foot of an average quality carpet," the local leader said. (ANI)

Found this interesting piece on a hiroshima article not sure if this has been discusses many moons ago

http://blog.oup.com/2010/08/remembering-hiroshima/
There is another nightmare, and it is perhaps more frightening because it is harder to predict. A terrorist is supplied with a small bomb built around a core of uranium. He carries the device, fitted into a backpack or a suitcase, into Charles de Gaulle airport, King’s Cross Station, or Times Square, and detonates it. While the blast itself would kill only the handful of people unlucky enough to be nearby, a large area would be contaminated with radioactivity, and the psychological effect of such an attack would probably be shattering. In 1997 General Aleksandr Lebed, a former Russian national security adviser, claimed that the Russians had built suitcase bombs—their targets, allegedly, were NATO command bunkers in Europe—and that several had disappeared since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Just weeks after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States, the Israelis said they had arrested a Pakistani man trying to enter Israel via the Palestinian Territories with a backpack-borne nuclear device. The event worried Western terrorism experts and law-enforcement officials. In December 2005 US air marshals shot dead in Miami a plane passenger who evidently claimed to have a bomb in his knapsack, though it turned out that the man had a psychological condition and had neglected to take his medication; no bomb was found. Atrocious and indiscriminate bomb attacks on public transport in Bombay, Madrid, and London have raised fears that a nuclear device might be used in the same awful way.

Cantonments in and around Swat can help Paki Army so that
[1] the military is overtly (no more hide and seek) closer to Afghan borders and
[2] US drones can not bomb these 'ally' locations.

Well well well

Residing a few miles apart, as citizens of what was supposed to be one nation, we are facing two very different destinies of glory and failure.

India has defeated the Pakistani militarily but much more importantly, psychologically.

Not to speak like a Paki, and its a repulsive thought, but this current Indian govt’s position as articulated by Tharoor holds no water, it is faint, and borders on cowardice; begging TSP to crack down on India-specific terror. Matter of fact, in the face of this position, TSP’s position will appear reasonable to a disinterested white audience who view both India & TSP as naughty brothers who must be made to behave under their tutelage.

TSP position is that we also victims onlee, even your own MMS said so. Mumbai was done by "non state actors", our courts are as slow as yours and you have not provided enough "evidence" bla bla and other stuff that will make you puke. Furthermore, both our countries are plagued by "extremism" and poverty bla bla, self-righteous stuff that will make you puke even more. Finally, with the KM stone-pelters in the background, TSP says the "core issue" bedevils our relationship, and if only the "core issue" is "resolved" (and everyone knows the meaning of that), everything will be hunky dory. So, the solution to all this to set aside all pre-conditions, forget about Mumbai, forget about LET; just sit down and talk about Kashmir for a start and we'll see where we go from there.

And in response to this daylight fraud from TSP, all India can come up with is to beg for some abstract action on terror and so we meet "halfway". For e.g., WTF does "dismantle infrastructure of terrorism" mean? WFT does "meeting halfway mean". TSP's position is even more clear on this one; KMs don't want to stay with you, offer them the "right to self determination". Instead, India should set some benchmarks, like say hand over Hafeez Saeed, Dawood etc. They are concrete demands. And on Kashmir, India must make it clear that its sovereignty is non-negotiable and if TSP accepts that, we can talk further. My point is for India to be a tad more aggressive, clearly set some benchmarks, relate those benchmarks to what USA/UK are also demanding from TSP, and all of India's diplomats must repeat that with deafening repetition. Heck, even David Cameron has shown more teeth on demanding what TSP must do for India to talk to it.

Your conspiracy theory for the day, inspired by Shri David Cameron's unprecedented remarks about Pakistani sponsorship of terrorism. Let's see if the following sequence of events pans out.

1) Shri David Cameron visits India and makes unprecedented (for HM Govt) public remarks implicating Pakistani state sponsorship of terrorism against Afghanistan, NATO and India. Indian media has a field day with these remarks. NOTE that this happens, just on the very eve of a scheduled trip by 10% Zardari to the UK.

2) In Pakistan, interested parties pick up on the Cameron story and make a huge issue of it for domestic consumption. Protests everywhere, effigies of Cameron are burned in the streets. 10% Zardari starts sweating with discomfort, thinking of his upcoming trip to the UK. Dashing his hopes, Cameron further refuses to backtrack on any of his comments.

3) A scheduled visit by the ISI chief to the UK is cancelled. Paki press starts rumbling that Pakistan will "downgrade" and "re-evaluate" its relationship with the UK. The question is pointedly asked whether Zardari will also cancel his UK visit... but Zardari cannot afford to cancel since the begging must go on. You see what is happening here... Zardari is being maneuvered into a politically untenable situation.

4) Just as Zardari is about to leave for the UK, the Fauji-pasand foreign ministry of Pakistan makes things EVEN MORE difficult for him... they announce, publicly, that "Zardari will set Cameron straight" on Pakistan vis-a-vis terrorism. At this point, public expectation WITHIN Pakistan is such that Zardari has to perform an impossible task. He has to go to the UK, meet Cameron, beg for donations and concessions, and ALSO force Cameron to back down on statements which Cameron is showing no sign of disavowing.

Zardari has effectively been set up to fail, by Kiyani and his proxies like Groper Gilani and SM Qureishi.

5) Future: Zardari gets the middle finger from Cameron, comes back to Slumbad with a pittance of aid and no backtracking on the Cameron comments about Pakistani terrorism. He is immediately disgraced before a public that has already been stoked to rabid frenzy with protests over Cameron's remarks.

6) Zardari is asked to step down/ escorted to a lamp-post for his failure. Kiyani replaces him with someone more amenable to Fauji designs. Gilani? Qureishi? Or perhaps PPP itself will be taken down a notch and Nawaz Sharif brought in?

It is possible that Zardari may be after all successful. Please do not ask me logic. See the confidence comes from the way they are able to pulldown WTC towers and get a Mosque constructed there. The level of confidence is 10000 times more that what it was.

Whether it is keeping troops safe in Afghanistan or keeping people safe on the streets of Britain, that is a real priority for my Government, and somewhere where, with Pakistan, we are going to work together in this enhanced strategic partnership." Standing alongside Mr Cameron at his country retreat, Mr Zardari said: ''This is a friendship that will never break, no matter what happens. ''Storms will come and storms will go, and Pakistan and Britain will stand together and face all the difficulties with dignity and we will make sure that the world is a better place for our coming generations.'' A joint statement from the two men revealed that Theresa May, the Home Secretary, is to travel to Pakistan in the autumn, and the Prime Minister has accepted an invitation to make an "early visit". The text also included a recognition from Mr Cameron of the "sacrifices" that Pakistan had made in the fight against terrorism.

Pakistani leaders think they are signing a START treaty whenever they meet any gora leader in a gora nation. Delusion of their nation equal to something big is always shown off. Musharaff not receiving Bush and some low level protocol officer receiving him to be flown to Musharaff's palace etc. also belongs to same delusions. West is the reason for creating such delusions.

On NPR they had an Indian corrospondent who was reporting from India and said Indain controlled kashmir. Well he has to earn a living too, and this is what NPR calls, then he has to call it. It is not the prerogative of a gora or TSP-origin reporter, that is SOP name for Kashmir.

I don't think he will be successful because it is not in the TSPA's interest for a *civilian* leader like Zardari to get the credit/glory for such a success.

What I am suggesting is that the West and the TSPA's interests may have aligned in getting rid of Zardari... and that process is in fact what is happening here, starting with the Cameron saga and carrying on with the Zardari visit.

The West has already supported an extension for Kiyani as COAS. Kiyani may also have asked the West that Zardari should be removed from the Presidency, so that a more pliant candidate (from TSPA point of view) can lead the "democratic political face" of Pakistan.

The West may also regard Zardari with suspicion and dislike, given his overt closeness with the Chinese. However, the West cannot overtly support something that appears to be a military coup in Pakistan for the sake of removing Zardari and putting some TSPA-chosen candidate in his place. So instead they have gone along with this program: set Zardari up in a situation where popular resentment is high and he is expected to deliver the impossible. When Zardari fails, it will appear to be a result of his political incompetence. He will be out, some TSPA-backed candidate will be President of Pakistan, Kiyani will be happy, and the West will be happy.

It is not about teaching a Pakistani anything, but rather to point to the Editorship of Associated Press to institute a policy for its writers on how to refer to Jammu & Kashmir in the future.

Well, its certainly a good point you make. But, I will still maintain that even after this, a Paki cannot keep his mouth shut on Kashmir, he would have still called it Indian-Held Kashmir.

You already have seen what happened with the UN spokesman Paki under Ban-ki-Moon, and UN does have a policy for Jammu and Kashmir.
That said, I do support if we let Yahoo/AP know that Jammu and Kashmir is India's.

The West may also regard Zardari with suspicion and dislike, given his overt closeness with the Chinese.
No less than Kayani or any TSPA crore kammandu's adoration for taller than friends, surely.

What does the West get out of replacing Zardari?

The Yahoo news reporter says: "Indian controlled Kashmir. The header says "Indian-held Kashmir." Blame the Paki editors or maybe even a Indian-pinko
