Cried Cassio in Shakespeare’s Othello: “Reputation, reputation, reputation! O, I have lost my reputation! I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial. My reputation, Iago, my reputation!”
Later, in that great tragedy, arch-villain Iago provokes Othello: “Good name in man and woman, dear my lord, Is the immediate jewel of their souls: Who steals my purse steals trash; ’tis something, nothing; ’Twas mine, ’tis his, and has been slave to thousands; But he that filches from me my good name, Robs me of that which not enriches him, And makes me poor indeed.”
This latter quote was passionately used by Benazir as prime minister, defending herself in the National Assembly in her second round on but one of the occasions during which she was subjected to allegations of corruption, due in no small part to the suspected misdeeds of her husband-minister.
Our president has made a mockery of his country and of the position of head of state. His prime minister has been made a fool of by his loyal aides, and his ministers and administration have shown themselves to be helpless, incompetent and concerned only with their immediate need to be projected in the media as saviours of an out-of-control situation — and this despite the prime ministerial admission that the government is as way out of its depth as are the inundated cities, towns, villages and fields of this unfortunate country.
Yesterday, the nation marked its 63rd year of existence — but of course it does not exist in its original form. Our dear leaders in the run up to 1971 saw to it that half the country was willfully dismantled and given away. The usual annual inane platitudes were issued by the current leadership without their realising that using the name of the founder-maker, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, is an insult to his memory, so distant has Pakistan grown from what it was intended to be and so removed are they themselves from the man that was in every conceivable way.
Is there hope of redemption? For what is left of my generation, the answer is no, as it is for a couple of generations that followed. For the youth of the country, there is always hope, as optimism flourishes in those who have not yet experienced the travails and turmoil of life. But what is for sure is that under this present dispensation we will not find redemption as it is so manifestly beyond its members to make any change other than for the worse.
It seems that even the mighty army is nonplussed. All we can do is wait and see what our mentors, providers and protectors have in store for us, how does the US now intend to tackle the problem that is Pakistan? The ‘deal’ it so laboriously set up between Pervez Musharraf, Ashfaq Kayani, Asif Zardari and its European partners after the loss of Benazir does not seem to have quite worked out as intended — unless the intent was failure.
Zeeshan Aleem, before making comments from your musharraf you need to think there are some sane people reading your BS. Now will you care to explain us how?In fragile countries, the effects of natural disasters quickly ripple far beyond the burdens of repair -- Pakistan’s flooding is generating a security challenge that potentially threatens the entire region of South Asia.
Now here is the answer give us the money or we will unleash the wild dogs on youIn a state of unprecedented vulnerability, many Pakistani hearts and minds are up for grabs. And neither the U.S. nor Islamist extremists in Pakistan are allowing the crisis to go to waste; they have been conspicuously competing for the status of most beneficent.
The Koran: Sura (2:191-193) - "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution of Muslims is worse than slaughter of non-believers...and fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah." Sura (4:74) - "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward." Sura (4:76) - "Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah…" Sura (5:33) - "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement" Sura (8:12) - "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them" Sura (8:39) - "And fight with them until there is no more persecution and religion should be only for Allah" Sura (8:57) - "If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember." Sura (9:14) - "Fight them, Allah will punish them by your hands and bring them to disgrace..." Sura (9:29) - "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, even if they are of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." Sura (9:30) - "And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah; and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them; how they are turned away!" Sura (9:123) - "O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness." Sura (47:4) - "So when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make them prisoners," Sura (61:4) - "Surely Allah loves those who fight in His way" Sura (66:9) - "O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Ibn Ishaq: 327 - “Allah said, ‘A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. I APPLAUD Mustafa Qadri's piece urging the world to help Pakistan ("Aiding Pakistan will protect West's security" World Commentary, 17/8).
However, I'm a bit disappointed he did not dwell on the role India could play.
The best organisation that can help Pakistan in its hour of need is the Indian army, which maintains several hundred thousand combat troops very close to its western border. It would take less than a day for tens of thousands of those troops (sans weapons, of course) to reach the flooded areas and help in rescue operations, distribution of food, medical assistance, etc.
We all have a stake in Pakistan's survival as a stable democracy. The world cannot afford to hand over millions of potential recruits to al-Qa'ida.

WASHINGTON: With almost one-fifth of the country reeling from floods, Pakistan has said its homegrown terrorists have overtaken the Indian Army as the greatest threat to its national security, even as Islamabad battles overcome the world’s trust deficit to win desperately needed aid.
The sudden turnaround in downgrading the Indian ''threat,'' reportedly contained in a recent internal assessment of security by the country’s spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), comes only weeks after the country’s military supremo Pervez Ashfaq Kayani rebuffed Washington’s efforts to highlight the threat of home-grown terrorism while insisting India remained the principal enemy.
The ''recent'' undated assessment, leaked by a senior ISIofficial to the Wall Street Journal, allocates a ''two-thirds likelihood of a major threat to the state coming from militants rather than from India or elsewhere.'' Evidently, it is the first time since Independence that India isn’t being viewed as the top threat.
The purported rethink, received leerily in Washington and New Delhi, comes amid catastrophic floods that has devastated Pakistan and generated talk about the country’s very survival. Some reports say nearly a quarter of the country – an area the size of Great Britain – is affected by floods, and there is fearful speculation that extremists will have a run of the place because of government apathy and inefficiency.
Pakistan’s civilian rulers have tried to highlight this aspect to drum up more aid from world community, but till last weekend its appeal was met with skepticism given Islamabad’s own dodgy use of militant groups to further its strategic depth, a concept which Kayani defended till recently. But that depth now appears to have been washed away; on Tuesday, Pakistan faced the mortifying spectacle of Afghanistan giving it $ 1 million in flood aid, even as it sat on India offer of $ 5 million in aid with more to follow.
The neighbourly concern from countries that Pakistan has tried to undermine for long is in sharp contrast to the indifference, based on suspicion about Islamabad’s bona fides, from most of the world community. As of last weekend, the Indian aid offer topped France ($ 1.5 million), Germany ( $ 2.4 million), Italy ( $ 1.8 million) , Netherlands ( $ 1.3 million). Sweden ($ 3 million), and a host of other wealthy countries.
International experts attribute the cautious and tentative response by the world community to the trust deficit – as also donor fatigue -- arising from the Pakistani establishment’s deep and long ties to terrorism. "We note often an image deficit with regards to Pakistan among Western public opinion," Elizabeth Byrs, spokeswoman of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, bluntly stated over the weekend, even as she and other experts questioned the logic of punishing millions of flood victims for the policies of the country's militarized establishment.
Pakistan's image deficit became evident in the poor response to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s appeal for $ 10 individual donation through text messages for flood relief – an effort that brought in only thousands of dollars in the first few hours compared to the millions which rolled in for the Haiti earthquake and tsunami relief funds.
Similarly, a German lawmaker who is trying to raise money for Pakistan complained to Der Spielgel that he had so far been met with two types of reactions: "Some fear their money will help extremists. Others say: If Pakistan would spend less money on its efforts to arm itself with nuclear weapons then it would have enough money to manage the catastrophe."
Pakistan appears to have gotten the message – or at least is pretending that it did – going by the disclosure of its new threat assessment that runs contrary to what its Armychief insisted only weeks ago – that India remained a bigger threat than home-grown terrorists.

Reminds me of the joke in the Humour thread of 3 people (one Sri Lankan, one Paki and one Indian) coming across a genie who wished to give hem one boon each. The Paki asks for a huge wall to be built all around Paki-land, the Indian being naturally curious asks the genie about the wall and upon knowing that it is 150 feet high asks the genie to fill up the inside with water.Karna_A wrote:

It is two weeks since the rains stopped but water continues to rise in the rivers Indus and Chenab. There was no flooding in India or in Afghanistan. Never before have rivers in all the provinces of Pakistan flooded at the same time without a similar act affecting the upstream, the source. While some parts of the country, like some areas of Khyber Pakhtun Khwa saw flooding in 1929, the simultaneous floods covering all of Pakistan and in all of the rivers flowing in from Afghanistan and Indian-occupied Kashmir is something truly unprecedented.
..........................
There is every likelihood that what we are seeing today is that the Indians and the US-backed regime in Kabul are using water as a weapon for the first time to deluge Pakistan. There is no doubt about it.
...................
How Pakistan responds to this latest Indian water war and aggression is something that remains to be seen. What is confirmed is that the incumbent pro-US government in Islamabad is useless when it comes to defending the Pakistani interest. To be fair to this government, this unusual situation in Islamabad started under former President Musharraf and continues with the current ‘elected’ government with amazing continuity. This water aggression has proved more lethal than the TTP [so-called Pakistani Taliban] and the BLA insurgencies, both of which were started from the Afghan springboard to punish Pakistan.
Pakistan has taken another serious hit, more from its corrupt rulers than external enemies. These Indian Dams now need to be destroyed. India has declared war on us by exploiting and orchestrating these floods.

Way to go Pukes! Kill the very people whom you claim to be fighting for!
The map shows severity of the floods by districts. It's only around the Indus river that the land is fertile and flooded and the rest of the areas to the east are desert/semi-desert. So if the map shows Sukkur as heavily affected district it doesn't mean whole of district is flooded and that just areas around the river are. The area to the east from Sukkur is the Thar Desert.arunabh wrote:In the map above, the most affected areas seem to be bordering jaisalmer and barmer. He contradicts himself right there. First he says "There is every likelihood" and then says "There is no doubt about it". Either it is "likely" (i.e. there is a possibility) or it true beyond doubt.Brando wrote:Another Gem from the Pakistani media:

Talking to the ambassadors of Iran, Syria and the U.S., Sharif said: "the international community cannot remain indifferent to the plight of the flood victims in Pakistan. If we do not fulfil our responsibilities, the flood victims can turn towards extremism."
Sharif also said that the international community, especially the developed countries, should support Pakistan in during this emergency and help rehabilitate displaced people, according to a report in the Urdu-language daily Roznama Express.
The chief minister also thanked the Syrian, Iranian and American people and their governments for their support in relief activities and expressed the hope that they will keep helping Pakistan in rehabilitating the flood victims.
