Building a Nation of Know-Nothings
By TIMOTHY EGAN

Timothy Egan on American politics and life, as seen from the West.
Having shed much of his dignity, core convictions and reputation for straight talk, Senator John McCain won his primary on Tuesday against the flat-earth wing of his party. Now McCain can go search for his lost character, which was last on display late in his 2008 campaign for president.

Remember the moment: a woman with matted hair and a shaky voice rose to express her doubts about Barack Obama. “I have read about him,” she said, “and he’s not — he’s an Arab.”

McCain was quick to knock down the lie. “No, ma’am,” he said, “he’s a decent family man, a citizen.”

That ill-informed woman — her head stuffed with fabrications that could be disproved by a pre-schooler — now makes up a representative third or more of the Republican party. It’s not just that 46 percent of Republicans believe the lie that Obama is a Muslim, or that 27 percent in the party doubt that the president of the United States is a citizen. But fully half of them believe falsely that the big bailout of banks and insurance companies under TARP was enacted by Obama, and not by President Bush.

I am surprised you take all this theater seriously. I mean whether or not you like Obama, and this is not the thread for that, but seriously can anyone with even a room temperature IQ not realize that Obama has been in power for less than 2 years, how in heaven's name can he even make a dent in all the issues of concern? Obama bad, Obama good, Obama Obama ... is to keep US media gainfully employed and and their diligent followers brainwashed; for the rest of us its entertainment value. What I am concerned most is his AfPak and TSP appeasement policy under the diktat of the dem party big wigs: Zbig, Billy boy, NotBright etc.

CIA: Headley & others gave USA reputation of 'terror exporter'
The Central Intelligence Agency harboured deep concerns at the possibility that America might be viewed as an exporter of terrorism, and the case of David Headley, prime accused in the Mumbai terror attacks, only substantiated such fears, according to a confidential memo released by the Wikileaks whistleblower website.

The latest in a string of controversial government documents revealed on the website was a paper titled, “What If Foreigners See the United States as an ‘Exporter of Terrorism'?,” reportedly authored by the CIA's Red Cell, a think tank set up after the 9/11 attacks to provide “out-of-the-box” analyses on “a full range of analytic issues.”

In the report, the CIA argued that the actions of Pakistani-American Headley, among others, might indeed have led to the view that the U.S. was a “terrorism exporter.” Headley, who was linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba, pleaded guilty to undertaking surveillance prior to the 2008 attacks, is now in U.S. custody.

The CIA further remarked that even other terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda must have been aware of how easily operatives such as Headley moved in and out of the U.S., Pakistan and India.
We certainly know that the USA had a direct hand in terrorism in the Punjab in the 80s. A close relationship with and support to a terrorist state such as Pakistan will only add fuel to the fire.

But most people's opinion of Obama is not based on his performance, but on the question of his religious belief. Whether he's been in office for 2 years or 20 is not a huge factor for the common American citizen.

In the NY Times article by Acharya, there is a link to the original Pew Center opinion poll.

Growing Number of Americans Say Obama is a Muslim
Roughly a third of conservative Republicans (34%) say Obama is a Muslim, as do 30% of those who disapprove of Obama’s job performance.

Beliefs about Obama’s religion are closely linked to political judgments about him. Those who say he is a Muslim overwhelmingly disapprove of his job performance, while a majority of those who think he is a Christian approve of the job Obama is doing. Those who are unsure about Obama’s religion are about evenly divided in their views of his performance.
I know, doesn't go in this thread, so apologies.

Abhishek, books, I don't know if there are any. See this article by Shri B. Raman
Excerpts
The problem of terrorism/religious extremism faced by China in Xinjiang has certain similarities with that faced by India in the Punjab in the past and in J&K presently. The first similarity relates to the role of some members of the diaspora in fomenting terrorism. In India, Sikh terrorism in the Punjab was initially started by some members of the Sikh diaspora in Canada, the USA, the UK and other Western countries, with the encouragement of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the USA's Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) during the Nixon Administration, but it could never gather much support from amongst the Sikh population of Punjab.

In 1982/84 Illustrated weekly had a article about CIA funded training camps in unconventional warfare (aka terrorist tactics) Fairfax Virginia, The report was date lined by then Ilustrated weekly US correspondent MV kamath (later Editor of Illustrated weekly after Kush Mad singh).

Plenty of material available. The GOTUS denied saying it was private shooting range training institute and as such had no control.... does it sound familiar....aka Non state actors.
TSP is just HMV.

Mrs IG got wind of this (US involvement to support TSP, {India deplored the invasion of Afghanistan by USSR}hence IG propped up Bhinderenwale to counter Akalis all this started in 1981 with the rout of Congress in Punjab, with Akalis starting to harp on Anandpur Sahib resolution... the dirty tricks go back to pratp singh Kiron ... its along story)

NSC gets a new South Asia director, filling out administration’s India team

http://thecable.foreignpolicy.com/posts ... india_team
The Cable has confirmed that Michael Newbill will join the National Security Council as a director for South Asia, finally completing the U.S. administration's India policy team less than three months before President Barack Obama's first visit there.

Newbill, a well-respected Foreign Service officer, has been serving as the chief political and economics officer at the U.S. consulate in Mumbai. He started out as an intern at the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, then went on to join the Foreign Service and serve in the Philippines, Thailand, and Washington (on the State Department's India desk).
...
Experts also remain concerned that the government is not sufficiently coordinating its India policy with its Pakistan and Afghanistan policy. Jaishankar noted the "lingering concerns of structural and bureaucratic walls at DoD, State, and the NSC" that prevent U.S. policy in India and Pakistan from working in harmony.

...

Over at the NSC, the Pakistan shop is run by a Bush holdover, retired Lt. Gen. Doug Lute. He reports up to Dennis Ross, who oversees an enormous swath of the map termed the "Central Region." Goel, the NSC South Asia director, does not handle Pakistan but also reports up to Ross, we're told. Newbill will join a team that includes Stuart Seldowitz, the other South Asia director under Goel, whose portfolio doesn't include Pakistan or Afghanistan.

Many South Asia expects believe that the split responsibilities inside the administration bode poorly for any effort to encourage a warming of relations between India and Pakistan -- to the great disappointment of Pakistan :(( , which would like to see Washington put pressure on India over Kashmir. Experts also see the bureaucratic separation between Af-Pak and India as limiting the U.S. ability to deal with India's involvement in Afghanistan. The Obama administration has so far resisted Pakistani requests to link its India policy more closely with its Afghanistan and Pakistan policymaking, out of respect for India's views on the matter.

However, there are signs that this may be changing as well. The Wall Street Journal reported in April that President Obama issued a secret directive to his top advisors, ordering them to explore ways for the United States to push forward India-Pakistan relations. The debate over exactly how to do that continues to this day.

Tx for the news item.So the O-Team is now going to engineer under "secret" orders from the Messiah to crack Indian heads and forcibly "marry" us off in haste to the TSP in order that the USA's grand strategy for the region is unaffected. What pestilential piffle and p*ss!

For decades now Pak has spurned every Indian offer of goodwill and better relations with backstabbing and butchery. From Indira Gandhi's most generous gesture at Simla releasing the entire captured Paki army of its former eastern half,in exchange for a poorly kept promise from Bhutto to officially firm up the LOC as an international boundary;Gujral's sentimental ghazals of memories of pre-Independence longings-paid back by Pak's proxy war;Rajiv and Benazir's peace waltz-paid back by her obtaining Ding-Dongs from NoKo;ABV's historic Bus trip-paid back by Mush-a-rat with Kargil and the attack on Parliament, right down to our time with the good Dr.Singh's willingness to make compromises at Uncle Sam's behest and talk endlessly at tables, bartering away India's security-paid back in style by 26/11!

America's role in the Indian subcontinent since the end of WW2 to date has been totally inimical to India. It first through skullduggery and shameful blackmail, with British connivance, kicked out the Chagos islanders of Diego Garcia and diddled Mauritius out of sovereignity of its island territories, setting up a massive naval and nuclear base there meant to dominate the entire IOR and Gulf.It then pampered its favourite "rent-boy" Pak,arming it with lethal weaponry to use against India in all the wars we have fought with it,still doing the same despite Pak's exposed terrorist nature;kowtowed to China to ensure cheap Chinese sweatshops for US manufacturers with Chinese domination of Asia as repayment for such services, and the attempt by stealth to take over the Indian economy and key decisionmaking institutions through a pliable political circus.

Cometh the Messiah to India-his "first coming",where he will arrive and be hailed like a conquering victor, revealed and crowned in all his glory by his butler-cum-constable Dr.Singh, who is making more effort at paving the way for India to become another US satellite state, than dealing with India's problems of the day.For such servilitude,we will receive from the Messiah radio-active crumbs from his high table (not a gift mind you,but to paid with the blood, sweat and tears of thepopulation of India!), where midgets around the world like his good be-turbaned butler wait upon him, eager to do his every bidding.

The "coming" of the Messiah will be a day of lament for all patriotic Indians, who wish that their country remains independent ,that Independence bought with the blood of millions of Indians who partook in the Freedon Struggle.Perhaps it is not too far off when another second...rather third fight for freedom will be neccessary.Perhaps that has already begun with the Naxal insurgency, greivously flawed though that campaign might be.

They look at the events in India and the region as dramatic.
The constant tension and belligerence as amusing and interesting.

"The Paths of Civilization: Understanding the Currents of History," by Jarozlav Krejci.
http://www.amazon.com/Paths-Civilizatio ... 1403938210

The civilization of India, more than 3000 years old, is at a crossroads. The
civilization of the West was only partly imposed on it. More important has
been a voluntary reception, promoted by the intellectual vigour of the
educated strata.

However, the presence of Pakistan, a robust Muslim state,
the border of which, in one place, Kashmir, was not drawn according to the
agreed ethno-religious principle, creates a constant tension; nuclear arms
and belligerent attitudes on both sides make this especially dramatic.

Winning, Losing and War
that the ultimate outcome of this war will not be decided by U.S. combat troops. The future of Iraq will be decided by the Iraqi people.”
“Well, first of all, my family lost in a big way,” said Cindy Sheehan, who became perhaps the nation’s most prominent antiwar activist after her son died in Iraq. “We had one of our cherished members, Casey, murdered by the U.S. empire in Iraq.”
In her view, “the only winners have been Halliburton, KBR, CACI, Xe, Unocal, BP, Standard Oil, Boeing” and other corporations that profited from the war. “People here in the U.S. who don’t know that they lost have lost big time,” she said.
The debate underscores the changing nature of war. The United States claimed victory in most of the wars it has fought from the American Revolution through World War II. The Korean War essentially ended in a stalemate, with American-led troops repelling North Korean invaders but then being pushed back to the prewar border. Vietnam is widely seen as a defeat after Americans withdrew and the South fell to the North. The first Gulf War succeeded in pushing Iraq out of Kuwait.

Interesting turn of events:

Rev. Wright criticses those who think Obama is a Muslim
Wright criticizes those who think Obama is Muslim

FILE - In a March 5, 2009 file photo, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright leaves the Selma Performing Arts Center, in Selma, Ala. Wright, President Barack Obama's controversial former pastor, referred to people who wrongly believe that Obama is Muslim as "psychopaths" and criticized supporters of the war in Iraq during a sermon Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010 in Arkansas. (AP Photo/Jamie Martin, File) (Jamie Martin - AP)

By ANDREW DeMILLO
The Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, President Barack Obama's controversial former pastor, accused people who wrongly believe Obama is Muslim of catering to political enemies during a fiery speech Sunday in Arkansas.

In his sermon at New Millennium Church in Little Rock, Wright criticized supporters of the Iraq war and defended former state Court of Appeals Judge Wendell Griffen for speaking out against it. Griffen serves as the church's pastor.

Wright's only reference to Obama came when he compared Griffen's opponents to those who incorrectly think Obama is Muslim. The president, whose full name is Barack Hussein Obama, is Christian.

"Go after the military mindset ... and the enemy will come after you with everything," Wright told the packed church.

"He will surround you with sycophants who will criticize you and ostracize you and put you beyond the pale of hope and say 'you ain't really a Baptist' and say 'the president ain't really a Christian, he's a Muslim. There ain't no American Christian with a name like Barack Hussein,'" he added.

A poll released this month found that nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, said they thought Obama was Muslim, up from the 11 percent in March 2009. The proportion who correctly said he was Christian was 34 percent, down from 48 percent in March of last year. The poll, conducted by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center and its affiliated Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, surveyed 3,003 people.

Obama cut ties with Wright in 2008, after Wright's more incendiary remarks hit the Internet during the presidential election. At a National Press Club appearance in April 2008, Wright claimed the U.S. government could plant AIDS in the black community, praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrahkan and suggested Obama was putting his pastor at arm's length for political purposes while privately agreeing with him.

Obama denounced Wright as "divisive and destructive" and left Wright's church in Chicago.

Griffen lost a re-election bid for the Arkansas Court of Appeals in 2008, after high profile battles with a state judicial panel over the rights of judges to speak out on political issues. Griffen was elected in May to a judicial post in Pulaski County, the state's most populous county that includes Little Rock.

Griffen said he invited Wright to speak at his church as part of a monthlong focus on the relationship between faith and the community.

Wright defended Griffen's outspokenness on political issues, saying it showed he was willing to speak out even if it would cost him politically.

Wright's sermon focused on the Old Testament story of the prophet Elisha thwarting an attack by the Aramean Army. Wright repeatedly made references to the war in Iraq and suggested parallels with the Biblical story.

"What was his motivation? Elisha had embarrassed him, like Saddam had embarrassed George Herbert Walker," Wright said, referring to the former president.

Wright spoke as Arkansas Republicans hope to capitalize on Obama's unpopularity in the fall election. Obama has not visited the state since 2006, and lost its six electoral votes in the 2008 election.
Fascinating ref to Iraq, Bible, Modern situation and all that.

Sikhism, which emerged in the Punjab region of India in the 15th century, strongly rejects the notion of caste, which lies at the core of Hinduism.

India man in agency 'limbo'
An Indian filmmaker freed from jail after being detained by airport security authorities who found "jihadist" literature in his luggage is now in federal custody, stuck in what his lawyer calls "limbo" between state and federal law enforcement agencies.
After a weekend in jail, Kumar's bail was reduced from $50,000 to $5,000.
After he was released on bail, Kumar's visa, which allowed him to travel between India and America, was revoked by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Because he had neither a passport nor a visa, he was taken into federal custody, his attorney Grant Scheiner said.
"They're the ones who created the situation by tying him in a procedural knot, and we're just trying to untie it," Scheiner said. "If they don't grant him bail, then he's going to continue in this state of limbo."
However, he is being prosecuted for carrying brass knuckles in a prohibited place, punishable by 2 to 10 years in prison, said George Flynn, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

Scheiner said Kumar was relying on the Transportation Security Administration website, which states that brass knuckles are allowed on planes in checked luggage, not carry-on bags.

US move to ease dual technology export control
Under the new approach formulated after a yearlong review by Defence Secretary Robert Gates, agencies will adopt a 'tiered' system, with three levels, to determine what items should be subject to stricter or more permissive levels of control for different destinations, end-uses, and end-users.

I do not know what Indian Embassy is doing but I am damn sure that Houston consulate is not doing anything. It has lost my OCI application thrice and still having trouble returning my passport that I sent for visa after giving up on OCI. When consulate cannot even help you with as much as paperwork (for which you pay), I would not expect much from an embassy.

See the comments. One 400% Paki calling itself "ICare" has used the Comments section to slander the RSS, and Hindus in general.

This scum bag is a Hindu RSS leader. His friend and fellow RSS leader D C Nath gave an interview in India admitting it. Now, let's talk about RSS, you have no idea how racist and violently fanatic the RSS is. In terms of impact, the RSS has had a much bigger impact on hum life as compared to Islamic radicals. We never hear about it because it does not effect the West.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) (Hindi: राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ), (National Volunteer Organization or National Patriotism Organization), also known the Sangh, is a Hindu supremacist paramilitary volunteer organization in India. It is part of the Hindu nationalist Sangh Parivar. In India, a country of about 1.1 billion poor people, there are between 2.5 million and 6 million radical RSS members.
The point is this: RSS has tons of innocent blood on its hands, and RSS is in the USA, and in Houston. It raises money for terrorist attacks on people in India, and on Western companies, and NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT. This damn gang is so radical that it is against the sale of Coca Cola and Pepsi, for Gods sake.
Some of the RSS achievements prove that the US government is absolutely right in keeping is piece of crap i jail, just as it is right to keep Islamic radicals in jail. This guy is not a lecturer or a film maker. He creates terrorists and raises money for terrorism.
All the Pakis in Houston seem to have gathered around to give his Comment the most number of recommendations... so it is on TOP of the Comments list.

I have put in a rebuttal under the username Rocketeer1
Poster "ICare" sports a huge American flag by his username, obviously in the hope that real Americans will overlook his propensity for slander, unsubstantiated accusation, and outright distortion of facts as a result. Also noteworthy is "ICare's" decidedly un-American insistence on declaring Mr. Vijay Kumar guilty of terrorism even though he has not been brought to trial on any charge, and currently does not face any terrorism-related charge. Even on the misplaced charge of carrying brass-knuckles (in his checked baggage), Mr. Kumar has been released from custody on a drastically reduced sum of bail by Harris County.

Forgive me Mr.ICare, but your Islam is showing.

Some legitimate facts for those actually interested: the RSS is not a terrorist organization. Neither the United States, nor India, nor any European country, nor any nation of the world proscribes it as being one. It is primarily a social service organization involved in development of tribals in remote areas of India, disaster relief and so on. It certainly has a Hindu religious identity, but many social service organizations, such as missionary groups, adhere to a religious identity of their own while conducting their activities.

Possessing a religious identity does not make any group a terrorist group, or a supremacist group for that matter. It is hard to remember this in a day and age when Islamic groups have worked overtime to support terrorist activity and identify the Islamic religion with terrorism... but this does not hold true for most religions of the civilized world.
The RSS has no blood on its hands, and despite the wild-eyed allegations of rabid Islamic supremacists, it has never been proven guilty of a single violent incident. It has its own views on globalization, which do relate to the sales of international consumer goods in India; but it has never opposed such sales violently in any fashion.

In fact, for 6 years (1998-2004) the Government of India was led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, a political affiliate of the RSS. During that period, if anything, the consumption of Coke, Pepsi, Nike, McDonalds, Gap, Levis and countless other American-made goods actually increased in India, and many more American corporations were granted access to Indian markets. During this same period, India's relationship with the US and with Israel improved to unprecedented levels of cooperation and strategic partnership. Hardly the sort of policy shift you'd expect to see from an "anti-western terrorist organization" as ICare (ILie?) sees fit to label the RSS.

Karan Dixit wrote: I agree. There is nothing us SDREs can teach TFTA US about terrorism. They know it all.
But the TFTA US can sure teach us SDREs a thing or two about acting in self interest glossed over by Gobblesian propaganda centerd on noble intentions. Imagine in US, hard-core war criminals like Bush/Cheney et. all who are responsibe for so much wanton death, mayhem, and destruction in Iraq lead kushy retired lives and praises heaped on them for helping "spread democracy"; Likewise, 100s of 1000s of white Christian nationalists, white supremacists etc lead by a Nazi thug in Glen Beck can hold a rally in DC and defile the name of one of the greatest civil rights heroes, and yet be portrayed as providing Americans with a "unifying", "uplifting" experience. Can you imagine us SDREs pulling off such grotesque con jobs with a straight face?

I don't think Glen Beck is a "Nazi thug" - that's just leftist propaganda. The lefties say the same things about BJP, too. I see no need to give credibility to the Left, because they just use that to turn around and bite us.

Metro Detroit Muslims work on tolerance, not terror

Trying to repair the battered image of islam.
Many say they feel more comfortable in Michigan because the state is home to 350,000 Muslims. Some 200,000 live in Metro Detroit -- and the community has been described as having the largest concentration of those of Arab descent in North America.

This is not a thread on US politics, much less useless tea party Nazi theater led by Glen Beck, but don't even compare BJP with that clown. BJP has concrete ideas for India's place in the world, its relations with west etc; of course it espouses a form of Hindu nationalism, a much more benign counterpart to what the tea party Nazis and Glen beck rant and rave about, but thats where the comparison ends. The left's, including the west's ranting and railing about BJP is unfair, without merit, and is centered on anti-Hindu propaganda. But pointing out Glen Beck's clowninsh demagoguery is fair & square. Remember his mockery of Indians and Indian doctors using Indian healthcare system as a boogey? Enough said.

And by the way, these chutiyas like Gleck beck and Sarha Palin are given enough leeway and lots of moolah to keep up their antics and provide some entertainment for the white Christian nationalists, but when push comes to shove, they will be slapped on their back sides by your "Atlanticist" and other big wigs who control the decision making should they take themselves too seriously and chart out an independent course.

We always excell in scoring self goals due to our dis-inclination to separate the own form the other. What leaps of imagination forces members to bring in Indian issues into international issues and muddy them? Is the that silly notion of world citizen? Thats psy-ops to make the others submit without a fight to the idea of peace and tranquility maintained by the other.

I was told there is a Marathi proverb:
Do not stab yourself because you have golden knife!

CRams ji, Here I have to agree with Sanjay M.Glenn Beck is no nazi.He is a libertarian who believes in limited govt and low taxes. What's wrong with that?I don't know in which context he quoted indian doctors but in my opinion he is not a racist. This is mostly leftist propaganda(NY Times,Newsweek,Time,CNN,MSNBC etc) which is responsible for creating perception that Tea party is racist.Sure some individuals might be racist but the movement is not.

The primary reason for forming the tea party was and still is the expanding size of both the Federal and state govts.Today US is suffering from a tremendous budget deficit and incurring some serious debts but still the spending is growing without any limits.Lot of this spending is possible because of continuous borrowing from China.States like California are in so much debt that some time back they didn't even have money to pay their employees in cash. They were issuing IOUs.

In such a situation it is the duty of the citizenry to oppose their rulers otherwise USA will become a banana republic.Just look at what happened to Greece.

Another point that is important to tea partiers is their constitutional rights especially their first and second amendments. Now leftists have always supported measures like Gun control which is fundamentally opposed to second Amendment. If there is no opposition from Tea party , Barack obama led democratic administration will hardly take any time to put more gun control measures in place thereby attacking the constitutional rights of Americans. For more info

As far as Sarah Palin is concerned I have no idea why you called her Chut.a.

^^Ramana ji.Robert Gates is actually an efficient administrator. If there is someone who can limit Pentagon's out of control spending it is him.He is the one who actually cancelled F-22 procurement on the grounds that it was not suitable for the wars that USA is going to fight. He is the most pragmatic figure in current democratic admin(Of course he is no democrat himself).

The only question is whether he will contest the polls. Most probably he wouldn't serve as SecDef even for the complete Obama term.

If the Tea Party really cared about "budget deficits" they'd take a knife to the defence budget. Tea Party is just a confluence of resentment at being out of power and replaced by a black liberal yuppie, white christian nationalism, and anger due to bad economy.

Libertarians they are not.

Bob Gates won't be running for anything. He's been planning on retiring for the past two years.

^^ Carl_t ji , I have stated that individuals might be racist. Some people will definitely be racist. The reason you gave above might definitely be true in their cases. But again I reiterate that the movement is not about race.I have given the link also.If you go through the link you will find that it was Ron Paul and his supporters who launched this movement. And Ron Paul is one of the most famous libertarians around.

Ofcourse it is about bad economy. What does spiralling debt crisis and out of control spending indicate? That is what I am saying.

Again there might be some Tea partiers who have are religiously motivated but it would be far fetched to say that Tea party stands for christian fundamentalism.

Look Tea party is a very large movement and you will see their influence in upcoming senate and house elections.Such a movement consisting of millions of people will never be monolithic. There will always be people there who are prejudiced in some way. There will be others who are not.

In fact even democrats and leftists are part of the growing Tea party movement.Check out this.

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/pol ... m-or-indie

I am saying that the driving force for this movement is fiscal conservatism and constitutional rights which brings all these disparate groups together.
