Interesting article on Gilgit Baltistan
PART 1
'Pakistan, China must leave Gilgit-Baltistan'
'Pakistan's foundations are flawed'
I would recommend these articles as they do offer an insiders perspective of the lost region we know little about
PART 1
'Pakistan, China must leave Gilgit-Baltistan'
Gilgit Baltistan, high in the northern ranges of Kashmir, has been in the news of late due to the reported presence of a large number of Chinese troops there. Senge Hasan Sering, the director of the Gilgit Baltistan National Congress, believes the number of Chinese troops in the region could be lot more than 11,000.
PART 2Tell us about Gilgit Baltistan, and your interest in Kashmir.
Gilgit-Baltistan is part of the former Princely State of Jammu & Kashmir, and we have been affected deeply by the unresolved issue. As a cultural and human rights defender, I have great interest in the Kashmir issue. The interest also stems from the fact that the Sufis and Shias of Gilgit-Baltistan share religious ties with Kashmiris and Ladakhis. Ethnically and linguistically, the people of Baltistan are related to the Ladakhis while the people of Gilgit, Chitral and Kashmir are Dardic, who speak related languages. All our historical trade routes open towards Ladakh, Kashmir and Tibet. Kashmir and Tibet gave us civilization, which is now plagued by violence, extremism and drug culture introduced by Pakistanis.
We want to re-establish relations with other parts of Jammu & Kashmir to revive our social values and traditions. The socio-economic development of Gilgit-Baltistan is something that every citizen of the region, including myself, aspires for. We believe that opening of the Line of Control and resumption of trade over the historical trade routes between Gilgit-Baltistan and Ladakh are critical for alleviating economic hardships, especially in the districts of Astore, Skardo, Kharmang, Gangche and Shingo-Shigar.
Hence, resuming links with Kashmir will help solve both socio-political as well as economic problems of Gilgit-Baltistan.
'Pakistan's foundations are flawed'
I would recommend these articles as they do offer an insiders perspective of the lost region we know little about

Anup there is one fallout of this that we have not discussed at length here. The total "mass" (numbers) of technically educated Pakis is actually minuscule. The reason I mention this here is that yesterday I was reading something (online in another forum) about Indian nuke weapons testing and deterrence and saw the usual angst and lack of confidence in Indian nukes. It suddenly struck me that for all the hundreds of analyses about Indian tests and the Indian deterrent written by (retired) Indian armed forces people, Indian scientists, analysts, media and enthusiasts, dissecting every little detail and nuance - you find that next to nothing has appeared from Pakistan on the subject. Media and enthusiasts have written little of note.anupmisra wrote:Those are "paki" college education standards for you.Brad Goodman wrote:Funny I always thought paki's took offensive to be called as "paki" but seems like now they have taken a liking to it
Culture of Corruption is deep-rooted in Pak
Look at the banner held up by a student on 1st slide.
The only two consistent sources of info about Paki nukes is Hudoodbhoy and Xerox himself. What is worse - and fit in well with what has been discussed in this thread about the "Romance of Packeestan" and the ignoring of anything bad from Pakistan - very very little has appeared out of Western analysts either - while many have had enough takleef to join Indians in dissing any Indian effort and proving the fizzle. It's almost like "You laugh and the world laughs with you. You cry and you cry alone"
If you go back to the events of 1998 and revisit Pakii tests you find that only one test was done, but was called as 6 tests and the seismic signature of that one test indicated about half the yield of Pokhran I of 11 May 1998. Not a chirp of analysis about this from anywhere. I would be glad to be proven wrong. All that I hear on this issue only supports the people who do not wish to say anything - i.e "Oh Pakistan got its nukes from China so we need not look at any further details". But it is curious that there is no Paki analysis and that fits in well with the minisucle technical base of Packeeland.

Two interesting points:Muppalla wrote:Pakistan stares into a void - By Syed Saleem Shahzad

Second and this is what amazes me - the blatant hypocrisy that we SDREs miss as we wallop ourselves in sorrow and self doubtNone of the villagers owned farmland - they were all laborers.
"All farms belong to the feudals of Nowshera city. We are laborers. After six months, we are bound to pay Ijarah [an agreed amount of money] to the landowner. No matter that the flood has destroyed everything, we still have to pay the Ijarah," a visibly upset Ibrar said.
Hussain and his fellow villagers had no idea where they would get the money to pay the Ijarah, but they were determined to get it somehow.
This is a big issue all over the country, especially in southern Sindh province. Many people have left the fields and moved to the southern port city of Karachi, saying they do not want to have to pay Ijarah as the land on which they had worked had been lost.

Gul began his military career in 1958 and helped lead forces allied to the United States during the effort to end the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.

Controversial Spy Cheif, Often Misquoted, Joins Veterans Today
Veterans Today believes that General Hamid Gul, one of the most controversial figures of our era, is the kind of person we need, a true friend to American veterans and our military, someone to consistently tells the truth. With America a nation threatened on all sides, led into disaster by liars, weaklings and those with questionable foreign allegiances, Gul’s “straight talk” and “shooting from the hip” has been a breath of fresh air for those Americans lucky enough to hear his unedited and undistorted views. Gul has stuck to the truth even when demonized for it.
Hamid Gul is one of the most respected authorities on the Middle East and South Asia, continually turned to by western military and intelligence leaders when the chips are down. With lifelong personal friendships that stretch the great divide from the Pentagon to Langley and beyond and wide respect from elements critical of the United States, Gul has been an enigmatic figure, one often seen as a threat to the “party line” scripted by Washington’s powerful Israel lobby.

You are making the mistake often made by western people in thinking that Islamists are separate from the rest of Paki society. The Paki Army are Islamsts, as are much of the RAPE, and some of the hoi polloi who are powerless anyway. In this case the RAPE and Paki army are dangerous to India as they can play the game of pretending to cooperate with the west enough to keep them engaged while targeting India and getting away with it. The pure Islamists on the other hand would reach out and threaten the west, and hence for India's perspective are way better than the so-called moderates, as has been pointed out by many on this thread. Basically all Pakis are out to target us, but the difference is that the pure Islamists would target the west and the Anglos would have some actual takleef instead of sitting back and happily watching India being targeted.VikramS wrote:There is an inherent assumption in the group-think here that if the Islamists become stronger, the Anglo customers/friends of TSP will ditch her and that some how will be good for India. I do not think so.
Just like the strong moral fiber of the Anglos caused them to prevent the genocide of 3 million in Bangladesh, whereas the authoritarian Soviet Union put pressure on India not to prevent it?If the Anglos ditch TSP the customers left will then dictate terms and these customers are authoritarian. If it serves their purpose, they will not blink an eye if millions of Indians die; they do not have any elections, or a business constituency or a liberal constituency to answer too. In fact the Panda will not mind if a nuclear exchange occurs as a TSP drowning in the cess-pool tries its best to take India down with it.
RAPE-Islamists and PakjabiArmy-Islamists can be co-opted to some extent though that will only result in a pretense of co-operation rather than any real cooperation. However the real Islamists cannot be controlled by them, its like you can tame a coyote or a leopard even but not a rattlesnake. If the Anglos decide that TSP is too important to leave to the other customers, they will then strike deals with the Islamists themselves. At the end of the day the Islamists too want all the trappings with power. Why would they be any different from the RAPE TSPA Generals? The land-owners like the Sharifs/Rashids are any way in bed with the Islamists. In fact the Anglos will be more eager to court the Islamists since the risk of a JDAM in the West becomes greater without the bought RAPE controlling the crown jewels. The Islamists too will be co-opted like the RAPE have been.

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/No--C ... -US/679273
The US had taken up concerns by Pakistan on the perceived ‘Cold Start’ strategy of the Indian Army that envisages rapid deployment of troops on the western border to escalate to a full blown war within days but has been told that such a doctrine does not exist but is a term that has been fabricated by think tanks.
The matter was repeatedly taken up by senior US Defence delegations after Pakistan voiced concerns that diverting more troops to the Afghan border would not be feasible given the Indian ‘Cold Start’ strategy that could bring offensive elements of the Indian Army to its eastern border within four days.

We are getting numerous signs of the TSP flailing:
- Floods response by official state organs
- Deer in Headlight syndrome for TSPA in early flood
- Reports of flood relief supplies being looted
- Reports of PRC troops/personnel in POK
- Now Russians want to engage the TSP
- India assuring US of no Cold Start!

Acharya / Ramana,
I always felt that the CSD was a reactive measure to deal with the aftermath of a terrorist ourage. Is the TSPA genuinely worried about it. Even in the absence of a Pakistani terrorist outrage. Or is this just an attempt of pulling wool over the eyes of the Khans?
If I had to guess. I would guess that it was the latter. So the threat of a coup against the civillian govt is overstated at the moment. Cause even the Army will not be able to salvage the situation. The only way to save TSP is to tone down the hatered of India and focus on the rule of law and human development.
They will rather destroy themselves, then focus on solveing the problems faced by them.

Balochistan says ‘No!’
QUETTA: A key directive by Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Wednesday that all police powers will be transferred for three months to the Frontier Corps (FC) in Balochistan was rejected by the provincial government in a drastic turn of events.
However, a spokesman of the Balochistan government later rejected all of Malik’s decisions announced at a news conference at the CM Secretariat on Wednesday.
An official handout categorically stated that the announcements made at the news conference by Rehman Malik were his personal views and the government of Balochistan had nothing to do with them.
“I have recorded my protest with Indian Foreign Minister Chidambaram and Afghan President Ahmad Karzai and also with America, about their alleged involvement in Balochistan,” he said, adding that he has informed the Afghan government that Brahamdagh Bugti is in Kabul and commanding insurgency in Balochistan. “I told the Americans that you people are watching the militants through satellite but we are watching them with our naked eyes,” he said.

Pakistan's army has launched several offensives in the northwest over the last two years, but has resisted moving into North Waziristan despite US pressure. A major militant faction there, the Haqqani network, is blamed for attacks against US troops in Afghanistan but has refrained from striking inside Pakistan. Analysts believe the army views the network, with which it has historical links, as an important tool to secure its interests in Afghanistan once foreign troops withdraw.

A British journalist held captive by militants in north-west Pakistan since March has been freed.
Asad Qureshi was abducted in the Pakistani tribal region of North Waziristan along with two former Pakistani intelligence officers. His release was confirmed by the British High Commission in Islamabad.
For months there have been considerable fears over Mr Qureshi's safety after he was kidnapped by a militant group calling itself the Asian Tigers
Mr Qureshi, a British national of Pakistani descent, had been working for an independent production company on a documentary commissioned by Channel 4 on militancy.Channel 4 said "family-led negotiations" resulted in the release and he was treated well while being held.
The high commission was unable to give any further details.
all's well in the family now.The captors had been demanding a ransom and the release of Taliban militants.

Pakistan Inflation Rate Accelerates as Kardar Takes Charge at Central Bank
Pakistan’s inflation accelerated more than economists estimated after the nation’s deadliest floods damaged crops and washed away roads and bridges, hurting supplies of farm and manufactured goods.
Consumer prices rose 13.23 percent in August from a year earlier after climbing 12.34 percent in July, the statistics department said on its website today. The median of 14 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey was for a 12.4 percent gain.
in terrorism business the risks are naturally high isnt itRising prices may put pressure on Shahid Kardar, who was appointed as Pakistan’s new central bank governor today, to increase interest rates, already among the highest in the world.
yep flood waters will cool itKardar, 57, said his primary task is to cool inflation.
The Food and Agriculture Organization has called for funds to replace half a million tons of wheat seed stocks depleted by the floods, with planting of the staple due to take place over the next three months.

Palm Oil Imports by Pakistan May Drop as Floods Destroy Demand
Pakistan, the world’s third-biggest importer of palm oil, may buy 10 percent less of the commodity in October and November than in July after the country’s worst- ever floods destroyed villages, a traders’ group said.
