Another "Heavy". This one is my favorite. The Mi-26 of course trumps it in size and power, but it has got to be one of the meanest looking helicopters around.

I remember thinking the same thing many moons ago but none of the sources I had in those days, including the Observer's Book of Aircraft or Jane's said anything about the Kiran being even influenced by the Jet Provost, let alone being a "bought" design which would have been fairly open info. Even today, no connection is made in Wikipedia or any other source all of which point to the Kiran being an Indian design which just happens to look like the Jet Provost.

The Jet Provost was the jet upgrade of the propeller-powered Percival Provost.

Victor - the other funny thing is that the tailpipe of a lot of jet trainers look similar - I will try and put up pics. The shape is shared by more than just the Provost and Kiran

When one designs a side-by-side jet trainer that has roughly the same handling qualities as all the other jet trainers of the time, it is natural to arrive at a similar configuration. Here is another one:

I thought it looks similar to this (Eurocopte Dauphin)

This Agusta Bell helo looks like the Blackhawk in shape (not in color of course) but has anyone seen a Blackhawk without Camo

I remember reading somewhere that the Fenestron rotor is a registered trademark of Eurocopter. Kamov is then paying some premium for using the design on its chopper?

It's possible ArmenT - but I select the photos based on size of image from a page full of thumbnails produced by an image search. The model, if it is one is a close enough approximation. I am looking at so many images while trying to add to this thread that there may be errors here and there hopefully not too major.

AW129 and Eurocopter Tigre indeed look very similar. I can't differentiate between them. Now other attack helos are quite easy to identify. Rooivalk looks fatter from nose to tail angle (the above image), Apache is unmistakable because of its popularity, legacy, cockpit windows and cruel ugly looks, LCH is most easy to identify because of its simple and clean design.

For the buffs: I identify these aircraft and say what is the identifying feature. "It just looks like xyz to me" is also a valid answer. You need not know why Aishwarya Rai looks like she does as long as you can identify her.

IIRC, the F-18 doesn't have a huge pitot tube sticking out of its nose. This is a YF-17 Cobra.

Mihir, good catch but that is apparently an F-18 not a YF-17. It was modified by NASA to test the Active Aeroelastic Wing. You can see the video here:

Vivek, the Su-30K is basically a modified Su-27UB 2 seat trainer. There is little external difference between the Su-27UB and Su-30K. In the above pic, the aircraft in front is a 2 seater while the one behind is a single seater.

Take the Su 30 (in front) in your hand and give it a tight slap on its neck (behind the cockpit). The neck will then bend down get an Su 27.

Russian's wasted so much money & time for upgrading Su 27 simply they should have slapped all the su 27
