Unfortunate for us - Australian foreign policy under Rudd will remain as virulently anti-Indian as before.

That is saddening..

This reshuffle is indeed baffling.. Mr Rudd had been removed as prime minister because the government had lost its way and because he could not work with other people in his own party, and he was now responsible for Australia's relations with the rest of the world. Wow!

It's a job that Rudd ruthlessly sidelined when it was held by Stephen Smith, in order to boost his own profile and ambitions, albeit without any noticeable success on his part other than offending both Japan and India.

Already bleak prospects for Uranium sales to India under the current government have now negligible.. Green's that played a pivotal role in the Labor retaining power have demanded ban in exports..
Greens could use their newly-formed alliance with the center-left Labor government to lobby to stop billions of dollars in planned uranium projects.
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/austra ... 2010-09-14
Greens nuclear spokesman Scott Ludlam says his party will use its power to try to stop planned uranium mines, phase out three existing mines as soon as possible and halt exports.
Colin Barnet in Radio interview tried to knock some sense into the Greens..

Greens outdated on uranium: miners
WA Premier Colin Barnett said the only way the Greens could play a role in stopping uranium mining was to convince the federal government to ban the export of uranium. But uranium was a rapidly growing mining sector for Australia, which probably had the largest reserves in the world and was the second or third largest producer, the premier told ABC Radio.

"I understand many people have a philosophical objection to uranium but if the world, particularly the developing world is to have clean, low-emission energy for health, education, living standards, then nuclear's going to play a bigger role." Mr Barnett said most developed countries got about 20 per cent of their energy from nuclear power while India and China wereonly at three per cent, "so clearly the industry's going to grow".
Only if Tony Abbott was in power

Economy vulnerable to shock from China
THE Reserve Bank's chief economist has warned that Australia is highly vulnerable to any downturn in China and India and urged the government to redouble efforts to lift productivity, while also encouraging continued consumer restraint.
Dr Lowe saidhe was confident that the long-term development of both China and India would support the Australian economy for decades to come.
Australia's economy, which used to track the US, now follows closely the fortunes of China's economy.

Racist scandal in Oz: Cops joke about Indian's electrocution

Our Ministry of External Affairs has released this statement on the racist e-mails circulated among the Police in Australia:
India expresses serious concern at reports of racist emails by Australian Police

October 09, 2010

Following the report in the Australian media today about racially offensive emails between Victorian police officers in Australia, the High Commissioner of Australia was called in to the Ministry of External Affairs and a demarche was issued to him on this matter.

It was conveyed to him that such an entrenched bias among sections of law enforcers towards the Indian community is a matter of serious concern. Such behavior and attitudes had no place in any society.

It was hoped that the Australian authorities would take necessary and effective measures to address concerns regarding the safety of all people of Indian origin in Australia.

The High Commissioner conveyed his Government’s condemnation of the incident and handed over copies of the statements already made by the Premier of Victoria and the Chief Commissioner of the Victoria Police in this regard.

Racist emails: Australian cops sacked for joking about Indian's electrocution

For what its worth, some action..
Four Australian police officers were sacked and disciplinary action initiated against 15 others in connection with the circulation of racist emails wherein they joked about the electrocution of an Indian. While four have been sacked, one has been demoted, another five have been fined up to 3000 dollars and placed on 12-month good behaviour bonds for their involvement in the case. Nine officers will front the disciplinary panel on October 12 and October 15, with six to be heard the following week, 'Herald Sun' reported today. Two officers quit rather than face the secret hearings.

Yesterday, top police officers were caught in a racist e-mail scandal joking about the electrocution of an Indian train passenger and suggesting that it could be "a way to fix the Indian student problem" in Melbourne. The emails that were probed by the Ethical Standards Department's Operation Barrot contain *****, homophobic, racist and violent material. The Victoria police officers circulated sickening video footage showing the death of the man, who was travelling on the roof of a crowded train in India, the daily reported yesterday.

Victoria police had said that it would resume disciplinary hearings this week into the circulation of ***** and racist emails within the force. The newspaper said it was also discovered that some of the force's highest-ranked officers have been implicated in the scandal, which also involves ***** material.

Well, the govt. of Oz has acted firmly and immediately and one must appreciate that.I think that this has shocked even the most lenient of Oz politicos and a message is beign sent out to the police establishment, especially when the govt. has such a slender majority.

I don't know how many members have seen that classic Russel Crowe film,"Romper Stomper" about neo-Nazis in Melbourne. This was made quite a while ago, when immigrant-bashing in those days featured attacks on the "yellow race".The land of Oz has been an insulated place for the better part of its history, with few immigrants to "discolour" the continent as a land of white people. Most of the immigrants earlier were also white and the sudden influx of coloured immigrants from Asia in the later half of the last century, hard working immigrants who started picking up "their" jobs (when the past time of an Ozzie is to have a ball on the beach, surf, watch sport, etc. and do as little work as possible).Adolf Hitler also suffered from the same fears and paranoia when as young man in Vienna,he saw his city engulfed with refugees from the east who threatened the cosy lifestyle of the ethnic German population. This left an indelible mark on his political mindset and we know what happened later on.

The worst time for ethnic strife is when a nation's economy is down in the dumps. That is when one ethnic group looks at another better off than themselves and blames their misfortune on their neighbours. The Jews for centuries in Europe suffered also because of the fact that they lived in "Christian" lands, where it was common to remember that the "Jews" killed Christ, while the "Christians" conveniently forgot that Christ was also a Jew! The globe is still trying to recover from the financial meltdown thanks to the limitless greed of capitalist bankers.Oz is not a land out of trouble as yet and its small population depends heavily upon skilled immigrants.I posted some time ago the crisis in the Oz navy's sub fleet with no submariners able to crew more than two subs, where a cook got a salary almost equiv. to that of an admiral! This has only added fuel to the fire and the flames of the burning issue has not yet been put out,but this is a stern signal from the new govt. that enough is enough .

New Zealand at centre of another race row as beauty contestant booed
A blue-eyed blonde beauty contestant is at the centre of a race row in New Zealand after claims she was booed for "not being Indian enough".

Jacinta Lal Photo: YOU TUBE Jacinta Lal, 21, whose father is Indo-Fijian and mother a white New Zealander, claims she was verbally abused while taking part in a pageant called Miss IndiaNZ.

The ugly scenes came to light days after the Indian government delivered a diplomatic protest to New Zealand over what it said were racial slurs against Indians by Paul Henry, a TV host.

Ms Lal said that during the Wellington heat of Miss IndiaNZ some spectators "were saying I wasn't Indian enough to win the pageant".
Several complaints had been laid questioning her eligibility to take part because of her skin tone and hair colour, she said.

"There is no difference between what Paul Henry is saying and what those select few Indians were saying," she told the New Zealand Herald.

"They are all wrong and they should not say things like that."
She added that other members of the Indian community had encouraged her to take part.

Her ordeal was revealed by Serena Fiso, the mother of her boyfriend, who posted a photograph of Ms Lal on a Paul Henry fan site set up on Facebook in support of the TV show host.

Mrs Fiso said: "It was just appalling, it was so disgraceful.
"We were just dumbfounded.

"The Indian community seem to have taken great offence to Henry's comments but, when I attended that beauty pageant, I saw huge offence coming back the other way."

Dharmesh Parikh, the Miss IndiaNZ organiser, said he had received "two or three" complaints about whether Ms Lal was eligible to take part in the heat in Wellington.

He said she had also raised eyebrows when she later appeared in Auckland at the national finals of the contest.

"People said: 'Oh my God, look at this blonde girl coming to Miss IndiaNZ, what is she doing here?' "But this event is called Miss IndiaNZ, with an N-Z, and I strongly emphasise that this event is not an Indian event, it is a Kiwi-Indian event," he said.
Ms Lal finished as one of two runners-up in the finals.

The new controversy is indicative of the way the Paul Henry affair has divided New Zealanders, with thousands of fans calling for him to be reinstated.

India last week reacted with fury to footage of Mr Henry, a Breakfast show host for Television New Zealand, ridiculing the name of Sheila Dikshit, the Delhi Chief Minister.
The diplomatic protest led to his resignation.
Mr Henry had earlier apologised for questioning whether Sir Anand Satyanand, the governor-general who is of Indian extraction, was a New Zealander.

Australia is the dumb blonde of the world!

http://www.smh.com.au/travel/travel-new ... 16k44.html ;)
Our beauty is only skin deep
October 14, 2010

AUSTRALIA is viewed as the ''dumb blonde'' of the world, attractive but shallow and unintelligent, says a visiting British branding expert.

Simon Anholt, who has advised more than 40 countries on national identity and reputation, said Australia's one-dimensional image meant that events such as attacks on Indian students could do greater damage than in countries with which people were more familiar. ''A well-rounded national reputation is an insurance policy against that kind of thing,'' he said.

Yesterday Mr Anholt addressed a conference on international education conference in Sydney organised by IDP Education, the international student recruitment company half-owned by 38 Australian universities.
Advertisement: Story continues below

Australia's international education industry, which is worth more than $18 billion annually, is facing a large drop in enrolments as a result of a number of factors, including the strong dollar, changes to migration rules and the fallout from several attacks on Indian students.

Mr Anholt said the results of an annual national reputation survey he oversees with public affairs company GfK Roper showed Australia's reputation in India had been badly tarnished.

Overall, the survey of 39,000 people in 26 countries ranked Australia the ninth most admired country. But Mr Anholt said the success of tourism promotion campaigns had produced an ''unbalanced'' view of the country.

Indian students number to dip in Australia by 80%

Surprise surprise.. Thats what happens when a Indian students die on your soil and nothings done about it..
The number of Indian students enrolling at Australian universities for the 2011 academic year is set to plunge by 80 percent, an academic said. Melbourne University Vice-Chancellor Glyn Davis said that higher education across Australia, including Victoria, is taking a big hit after reports of attacks against students from the Indian sub-continent.

Davis told reporters here: "According to our best sources ... the fall in applications from India into Australian tertiary education ... are predicting at around 80 percent, some institutions are reporting up to 90." "We did have a system where everything was growing. It's no longer true, so we are going to have to go back and look again," Australian news agency AAP quoted Davis as saying Thursday.

There had been a string of attacks on Indian students in Australia, causing outrage in India. The assaults took place here as well in Sydney. One of the attacks proved fatal when a student, Nitin Garg, was knifed in January. Davis said: "We are the only country in the world that is having this sharp fall, which tells you that whatever the factors are that are driving it, they're about what we do in Australia."

The academic said Australia had never been the first destination of choice for Indian students. "There's no doubt that the climate in India was deeply critical of the way Australians had handled it, and there was also no doubt it was going to affect people's willingness to come here."

He went on to say that "it takes a long time to rebuild a reputation...You only do it through patient diplomacy, you do it through endless delegations, you do it through scholarships, and you have to work very hard with the community at home to make it clear that there are ... really disturbing consequences."

Cricket loss makes Oz athletes take it out on washing machine
NEW DELHI: At the top of the medal tally and the undisputed champions of the Commonwealth Games, the Australian team, sadly didn't show any sporting spirit when their cricket team lost the Test series to India on Wednesday.

Enraged by the humiliating loss, some athletes, according to highly-placed sources in Delhi Police, went berserk, destroying electrical fittings and furniture in their tower in the Games Village on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Not just that, policemen posted there say they also shouted slogans against batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, :rotfl: who played a pivotal role in ensuring India's victory in the Bangalore match, and flung a washing machine down from the eighth floor of their tower.

Their hooliganism started on Tuesday when Sachin scored a double century. "The house-keeping staff tried to stop them but to no avail," said a senior police officer handling security inside the Village. Stunned by the little master's stellar performance, they first damaged electrical fittings and fixtures in their block.

On Wednesday, when India brownwashed Australian 2-0 to keep the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Australian athletes reportedly threw a washing machine down from the eighth floor, said a senior officer. Mercifully, no one was injured.

Delhi Police, which received a complaint about this vandalism, tried to downplay the incidents to prevent them from snowballing into a diplomatic embarrassment for Australia.

On reports that some Australian athletes went berserk inside the Games Village after their cricket team lost the Test series to India, a senior officer posted there said that they have not received any complaints from Organising Committee (OC) which owns the property inside the Games Village. "Therefore, we have not registered any case," said a senior police officer.

Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: "No complaint has been received. We have found a broken washing machine from the block where the athletes were staying. We are trying to establish as to how the machine reached there."

OC officials didn't pursue the matter. "We have not given any complaint and the matter has been sorted out after discussion with the Australian chef-de-mission," said an official. When asked whether the Australian athletes have tendered any apology, he declined any comment.

This is hilarious.. Check out the defense mounted by Australia's Commonwealth Games boss Perry Crosswhite!!

No Aussie involved in Village hooliganism: Crosswhite
Australia's Commonwealth Games boss Perry Crosswhite on Friday denied involvement of any Australian athlete in the vanadalism at the Games Village. It has been reported that some Australian athletes went on rampage at Village following India's fabulous Test series win over Australia, out of frustration.

The report said the Aussies also raised fans against Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, who was pivotal in India's victory. According to 'Herald Sun', "Crosswhite confirmed that a washing machine was thrown off the eighth floor of an Australian residential tower in the athletes' village."

However, Crosswhite said he would be surprised if it was an Australian and blamed athletes from other countries who were in the Australian building at the time of the incident. :rotfl: The Delhi Police said it has not received any complaint from the Organising Committee but confirmed the rampage. Reports the matter has been sorted out after talks between OC officials and Australian chef de mission.

This has far more impact than all the strongly worded MEA statements put together. Oz will discover that its an economic problem that can not be solved by diplomacy, or by paying for the right kind of PR. There has to be an attitude re-adjustment starting from the political class, and working its way down through the police and legal system. I think it will happen; the money at stake is big enough, Aussies want to believe that they offer everyone a fair go, and Indian parents will not risk their children's safety lightly.

Foreign enrolment numbers going down has more to do with the shadiness of the immigration process and quality of education (or its lack thereof!!!) than other reasons. I have forwards of internal emails from decent schools that say "no big deal" esp with respect to enrolment numbers.

Surely, attacks on Indians did nt help in terms of across-the-board behavior, but the elephant in the room is the Labor government's cutback on overwhelmed sectors such as the food and hairdressing industries (!). It could have been even worser with the Liberal government (uh huh), esp on cutbacks on the immigration process. While much of the bandwidth was hogged by the boat people issue, the election promises of Tony Abbott left even some hi-fi qualified folks a bit weary. All based on what I heard onlee.

Aussie 'cry baby' wants a shot at Poonia..

Champ Dani's $20k challenge to Poonia
TOI reports..
She pulled out of the Commonwealth Games but now she's seething for a showdown. In a challenge straight out of the Wild West, Australian discus world champ Dani Samuels has demanded a duel with Krishna Poonia, who led a historic Indian 1-2-3 sweep of the event at the Games. The prize is $20,000, and the winner takes it all. But Samuels is unwilling to face Poonia on her home ground and wants the face-off to be held in Australia.

"A sponsor has offered $20,000 winner-takes-all, making it the biggest cash prize for a discus event in the world. The Diamond League offers $10,000 prize money, well we have doubled that to give Poonia her shot at the champ," Samuels' coach Denis Knowles was quoted as saying by the Australian media. Poonia is ready to take up any challenge, but only if it is before December. "It has been a gruelling year," Krishna's husband Virender Poonia told TOI on Monday. "She would be resting after December. So, if Dani has any challenges in mind, it had better be before that, and at a neutral venue."

Poonia is ready for the face-off with Samuels but is yet to get any communication from the other side. "We have neither received a phone call nor a mail from anyone associated with Dani regarding this challenge," said Virender, who accompanied his wife to Patiala on Monday for a training camp. "We can only commit after we are told about the date."

He added that Krishna would under no circumstance compromise on her Asian Games participation for this challenge. "We will go for the gold there (Guangzhou)," Virender said. "If Dani wants Krishna to compete with her during the Asian Games, our answer is no." Samuels had pulled out of the Delhi Games at the last minute, and the media reports said the Australian champ is apparently hurt at Krishna's statement that "Dani did not compete in the Commonwealth Games due to poor form".

"Krishna had never said that," Virender clarified. "She just said that so many athletes are coming to Delhi and there is no reason to be afraid." He added that the Australians are unnecessarily making an issue out of nothing. "They have this habit." Virender is also unhappy with the fact that the Samuels camp wants this challenge to be held in Australia. "That will definitely give them an advantage."

Krishna threw her personal best of 63.69m in April this year. Samuels has thrown over that distance four times this year, with a personal best of 65.84m in February. The Australian, however, has not been in very good form recently. "Look at her performance in the Continental Cup (held in Split in September) and you will know that Krishna has been a better thrower in recent times," Virender said. Samuels' best throw in Split was 61.43m, as against Krishna's Commonwealth Games gold-winning throw of 61.51m in New Delhi.

Krishna had beaten Samuels in a competition in California in 2008. At the Melbourne Games in 2006, Samuels got the bronze behind India's Seema Antil. "She is definitely not unbeatable," Virender said. "Krishna would be glad to accept the challenge."

The challenge has been accepted. The Indian coach said Don't understand why such a thing has been asked by the Aussies. And that she is ready for the challenge at a neutral venue after the Asian games.
So the Aussie must now get ready to settle at the neutral venue rather than return to Aussie land after her failure. May be Aussies not finding a washing machine will throw her into the sea.

India won the cricket match by five wickets.
Videocon must run it's washing machine production unit at full capacity. There is good opportunity in Australia since many washing machines will be destroyed today.

Australia court charges teenager for murder of Indian student Nitin Garg
An Australian court today charged a teenager with the murder of Indian student Nitin Garg and heard that the victim was threatened and chased on at least two other occasions before his death. A 16-year-old boy, whose name has not been disclosed due to legal reasons, appeared in a Melbourne children's court today and was charged with one count of murder. The boy's defence lawyer told the court the charges will be contested at a committal hearing early next year.
The prosecutor said one of Garg's workmates told police about an incident early last year in which the student was threatened and pursued by a stranger. He said the stranger had gone to the restaurant in April or May looking for Garg. The defence lawyer said the first assault in 2009 had involved a knife, and the stranger's return to the restaurant some months later was relevant to the case. The prosecution opposed the cross-examination of that witness, saying the evidence could be covered by other witnesses and the police informant. The magistrate said she would be unable to make a decision today on which witnesses would be compelled to testify and adjourned the case until next week.
Hope Nitin and his family get the justice they so truly deserve.

Oz mission pays damages for Commonwealth Games Village vandalism
The Australian mission at Commonwealth Games has paid Rs 10,000 as damages for the vandalism of some members of its squad who threw down a washing machine from the seventh floor of a Games Village apartment.

The alcohol-fuelled vandalism, first reported by TOI, could have taken a fatal turn if the machine had struck someone and led to condemnation of the behaviour of Aussie athletes concerned though no formal complaint was lodged. The amount paid covers the cost of the washing machine. No fine was imposed.

Australian squad were involved in at least two other incidents of overly boisterous behaviour in the dining area and on one occasion were led away by their managers.
WTF???? How can they be let off so easily???? :x

It's financial folly to view India's power as stomach-churning

HERE's a sobering fact - of every dollar raised in world cricket, 81 cents is generated by India.

Here's another one - whatever money Australia makes out of this summer's Ashes series it will budget to make four times as much when India tours here again.

India is the home not just of the sacred cow but the cash cow as well.

When a Victorian cricketing sponsorship manager spoke to an Indian billionaire about a prospective deal two years ago the Indian didn't even bother looking up from his chicken tikka masala to nonchalantly drop the line "how much would your home ground cost to buy?''

He offered to buy the MCG.
:rotfl:

The secret for other nations is to learn how to milk the cow not to run scared into the next paddock when they hear a stray "moo''.

You cannot fight India's influence in cricket. That battle has been long lost.

Australia should not be scared of Indian money propping up its own domestic scene.

The ending line:
As a wise man once said, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
Good on Robert Craddock's part to clearly state what they consider us to be.

I don't think we can extend this (feeling of keeping your enemies closer) to the collective "they" (Australians) based on this column. Craddock may just be another idiot who thinks he is too smart to proof read what he has written before submitting it for publication.

Meanwhile the attacks continue.
The next generation already learning from the current ones:Kid undergoes surgery after attack in school

And In australia , you drink beer and use the bottle to attack Indians.
He was smashed with empty beer bottles on his head at least thrice when he protested against derogatory remarks made by the teenagers, who also used aggressive body language and called Indians 'curry munchers.'
Which is why the first response should from the GoI should be massive. Issue the goddamn travel advisory already!

India will top China: Howard
Former prime minister John Howard has predicted China's one-child policy and its political philosophy will allow India to supersede it as the dominant nation in Asia before the end of the 21st century.

Mr Howard also said China would never overtake the US as the world's military or financial superpower.
''I think one of the problems China [has] is eventually she will have to decide whether she can maintain a position where the country is economically liberal and open and, politically, still closed and controlled.

''I think at the end there'll be an unravelling and they'll have to make … quite a hard decision.

''The other problem China has is she will grow old before she grows rich, she's got a terrible demographic problem because of the one-child policy. [China] is a rapidly ageing country, whereas a country like India is a younger country and I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the century India is a more powerful country.''
