No arm done here

http://www.hindustantimes.com/No-arm-do ... 15573.aspx
Our excitement knows no bounds, come November Barack Obama will come calling, along with Michelle with her sleek and toned arms. While we are graced with these, the US clearly does not want our neighbour Pakistan to feel left out. So it has thrown a mere $2 billion in its direction so it too can buy a few arms of a different kind for itself.

Now Pakistan will surely find good use for these arms and we should not worry too much about them finding their way to our borders. Given its track record of peaceful co-existence, we imagine that this money will go towards a new line in furnishing and décor in its public offices. Of course, we can trust the Pakistanis to be innovative with this latest round of largesse as it has been in the past, giving it to such retailers as the Taliban and the jihadis, all for development purposes.

Now imagine the scene in Islamabad when Indian foreign minister S.M. Krishna goes calling on Pakistan foreign minister S.M. Qureishi. “I say Mehmood old chap, have you gone in for a makeover here? I must say the furniture is very interestingly shaped. That table over there looks like a dead ringer for a Hellfire missile.” To which old Qureishi will say, “All these new-fangled designs really leave me cold. But yes, you are right, it has a dual purpose. When one fine day if, say the Maldivians were to threaten us, we could whip off the dust cloths and let them have a few volleys. Oh do be careful, that grenade-covered cushion could hurt you.” Well, we

are not too upset. We have our aam aadmi, they have their aam aadmi. :rotfl:

Obama to visit Pakistan in 2011: White House
WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama will not visit Pakistan during his trip to Asia next month, but he is committed to a trip there in 2011, as well as welcoming Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari to Washington, the White House said on Wednesday
is this soothing the ruffled H&D for visiting paki delegation?

Depends on which Iranians you are talking about -
Yes, sir. In this case, I hope it is obvious that I was talking about the Iranians that run press.tv, i.e. the current regime.

Pakistan and the United States: Frenemies in Need Can Be Friends Indeed

http://afpak.foreignpolicy.com/posts/20 ... nds_indeed
General David Petraeus is promoting (or wants us to believe he is) a peace process in Afghanistan sans Pakistan but with the very groups that the Pakistani military-intelligence apparatus has urged the United States and Afghan President Hamid Karzai to reach out to. Yet, at the same time, the United States is asking Pakistan to smack the hornets' nest in the North Waziristan tribal area, home to the Haqqani network.

Why would Pakistan create bad blood with an entity that could very well be integrated into the Afghan power structure in the coming years in a U.S.-endorsed reconciliation process? So its own Taliban-style insurgencies can live on even after the Afghan war comes to an end? :rotfl:

In surprise appearance, Obama delivers tough love message to visiting Pakistani officials

http://thecable.foreignpolicy.com/posts ... tani_offic
Dozens of U.S. and Pakistani officials are meeting this week at the State Department in 13 different working groups spanning all elements of the U.S.-Pakistan strategic dialogue, but the real action is in a few, select side meetings, where participants tell The Cable that the Obama team is taking a markedly tougher tone with the Pakistanis than before.

One key meeting Wednesday afternoon was between National Security Advisor in-waiting Tom Donilon and what's known as the "core" group of Pakistani officials: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, and Ambassador Husain Haqqani.

President Barack Obama dropped in on that meeting and stayed for 50 minutes, according to an official who was there, and personally delivered the tough love message that other top administration officials have been communicating since the Pakistani delegation arrived. Obama also expressed support for Pakistan's democracy and announced he would invite Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari to the White House in the near future.

Earlier Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton dropped in unannounced on another meeting between Special Representative Richard Holbrooke and Kayani. She delivered the message that Washington's patience is wearing thin with Pakistan's ongoing reluctance to take a more aggressive stance against militant groups operating from Pakistan over the Afghan border. A similar message was delivered to Kayani in another high-level side meeting Wednesday morning at the Pentagon, hosted by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Michael Mullen, two senior government sources said.

The message being delivered to Pakistan throughout the week by the Obama team is that its effort to convince Pakistan to more aggressively combat groups like the Haqqani network and Lashkar-e-Taiba  will now consist of both carrots and sticks. But this means that the U.S. administration must find a way incentivize both the Pakistani civilian and military leadership, which have differing agendas and capabilities.

"The Obama side is calculating that Pakistan's military can deliver on subjects important to the U.S. but doesn't want to, while the civilian leadership in Pakistan wants to, but isn't able," said one high-level participant who spoke with The Cable in between sessions.

The carrots are clear. A State Department official confirmed to The Cable that the two sides will formally announce on Friday a new $2 billion military aid package for Pakistan, focusing mostly on items that can be used for counterterrorism. Unspecified amounts of new funding for the reconstruction effort related to the Pakistani flood disaster are also on the table. In exchange, the United States not only wants increased Pakistani military operations in North Waziristan and Baluchistan, but also increased operational flexibility for U.S. special forces operating inside Pakistan's borders.

The sticks are less clear  . Former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad argued in a New York Times op-ed Tuesday that the Obama administration should threaten to take down terrorist havens in Pakistan, without Islamabad's consent if necessary. The Carnegie Endowment's Ashley Tellis wrote that the United States should condition aid to Pakistan on increased cooperation and even consider throwing more support toward India's role in Afghanistan, an idea the Pakistanis despise.

The timing of these op-eds and the change in the Obama administration's tone is not being seen by many as a coincidence.

The Pakistanis believe that their extensive efforts to expand military operations in South Waziristan don't get enough recognition in Washington. They also say privately that whatever incentives the United States is offering are not enough to compensate for the huge political and security risks that would come with a full-on assault on insurgent groups they have tacitly supported for decades.

Hanging over the whole discussion are reports that the United States is supporting and even providing escorts for the reconciliation talks in Kabul between the Afghan government, led by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and senior Taliban officials. The New York Times reported Wednesday that these talks were going on without the approval or involvement of the Pakistani government, ostensibly to prevent elements of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) from moving to thwart them.

"Pakistan is still resisting [moving on groups in North Waziristan] because it still hasn't fully finished with its ongoing operations [in South Waziristan] and also because it doesn't know what will happen with the talks with the Taliban and would much rather not antagonize the Haqqani network at this juncture," said Shuja Nawaz, director of the South Asia Center at the Atlantic Council.

Nawaz noted that the Strategic Dialogue with Pakistan has now reached the third set of meetings, and that there is more pressure to show concrete results to validate the need for such a high-level format. "I hope there will be some clarity on what the objectives are on both sides and also some clarity on red lines so we don't have to relive this movie again and again," he said.

Nawaz also predicted that another point of contention will permeate the chatter in the hallways between Pakistani and American interlocutors -- Pakistan's desire to have Obama visit sometime soon.

"The big underlying issue that won't be on the agenda but will probably be discussed is President Obama's upcoming visit to India and that he won't be coming to Pakistan," he said. "It will point to the imbalance in the relationship."

In a read out, the White House said that Obama has committed to visit Pakistan some time in 2011.

Qureshi, Holbrooke, and USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah will talk about all these issues at a joint Brookings/ Asia Society event Wednesday evening.

Abhishek, Pakistan most certainly will *not* go against the Haqqanis and the Haqqanis do not do suicide or IED bombing in TSP anyway.

Pakistan has very clearly pronounced its redlines as follows:
  1. No role for India in Afghanistan
  2. No talks with the Taliban without Pakistani involvement
  3. Pakistan's strategic interests must be taken care of in any resolution of Afghan problem
  4. Pakistan justifies terror in order to protect its interests against a bigger and better India
  5. Haqqani and Hekmatyar are strategic assets
  6. PA is India-centric and its priority is the Eastern border
  7. It will be PA and PA alone that will determine when and how any action should be initiated in North Wazirisan
It will be interesting to watch which of the several options that are available to the Pakistanis that it will use to delay acting in North Waziristan. In the worst case, it can always engineer another terror attack on India and make the border tense and use it as a reason to avoid action.

Depends on which Iranians you are talking about - there's millions of Iranians with family in the US who would like to see better relations with the West.

The mass anti-American frenzy of the revolution died back in the 1980s. The regime tries to keep up the facade, but its largely hollow.

You have an easier time getting young Iranians to chant "Death to China" today, something that happened during last years Quds Day when they were supposed to chant "Death to America".
The mischief originates from Press TV and iirc it is an Iranian govt. propaganda organ, nothing to do with the Iranian people per se. Press TV stirred up trouble in J&K recently making getting the locals (even more) enraged, by playing up the weirdo minister in Florida who wanted to burn the Quran.

They will just shift them from North Waziristan to some other location and claim 'Mission Accomplished'. When the pressure subsides (or when Americans leave), they will return and Karzai will become another Najibullah.

I don't think this fall-back option will serve TSP well. Reason being that the huge Mumbai 26/11 cash + interest is stacking up in the bank, even as TSP is cashing it bit by bit, and so another terror attack will bring unncecessary spotlight on them. With "when you talk, the world listens" award conferred on his highness, CEO of the "South Asian" country called India, he (MMS) has fallen in line with what the board of directors in Washington/London have decided for the "South Asian" region (your list), and hence there is no reason for TSP to rock the boat. Washington is astutely managing the equal equal to perfection. TSP's game plan right now, as AfPak unfolds, is to maintain the equal equal status quo, milk US to whatever extent it can, and then fight another day.

I guess things have got to the point that news about the violence going on in Karachi barely registers a blip on the radar.
Karachi mayhem continues with 10 more dead
Ten people have been killed in more political and ethnic violence in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, taking the toll to 35 in barely a day.
....
....
Karachi police chief Fayyaz Leghari said security forces patrols had been stepped up and the situation was improving.

But gunmen have continued to target civilians around the city, says the BBC's Syed Shoaib Hasan in Karachi.

More than 60 people have been killed in the city since the weekend when a provincial assembly by-election was held.

Pakistan left out of Afghan-Taliban talks, official says

Heading tag:
'We are out of the loop,' a senior Pakistani security official says. The exclusion could endanger ties between Washington and Islamabad and ultimately doom the peace effort, analysts say.
A little further into the article, we see who the analysts are:
"If Pakistan isn't involved, it will again think that the U.S. is an unreliable ally that has bypassed it," said Talat Masood, an Islamabad-based security analyst and former Pakistani army general. "They could express their unhappiness by throwing out the whole process of cooperation."

Another Pakistani security analyst, retired Brig. Javed Hussain, said that leaving Pakistan out of talks probably would doom the chances for success, because Pakistan, particularly its Inter-Services Intelligence agency, exercises a large measure of control over Afghan Taliban leaders based in Pakistan. Without Pakistan's acquiescence, Hussain said, Afghan Taliban leaders aren't likely to go along with any peace proposal.

"I don't think the Taliban would agree to a full-scale settlement without Pakistan," Hussain said.

Nuggets from TFT
Ch Nisar apologises to Ranjit Singh

Reported in Jang, PMLN leader and head of the public accounts committee in parliament, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, stated that he had often likened the chaos of governance in Pakistan to the regime of Ranjit Singh in Lahore, but after reading a book on the maharaja, he had realised that he was wrong and now wanted to apologise to the soul of Ranjit Singh. The paper commented that Ranjit Singh had made a lot of Muslims in Punjab suffer and had stolen their kingdom from them. Ch Nisar had read the book on him written by Khushwant Singh, which was presented to him by PMLN leader Khwaja Muhammad Asif.

Muhammad Asif’s wealth

Reported in daily Nawa-e-Waqt, fast bowler Muhammad Asif came from the family of a poor farmer of Machchikay near Sheikhupura, but owned a luxurious house in Phase Four of Defence Housing Society in Lahore worth several crore rupees. He also owned a number of very expensive cars.

Muhammad Amir’s wealth

Reported in Nawa-e-Waqt, 18-year old fast bowler Muhammad Amir, playing for Pakistan only for a year, came from a poor house from village Changa Bangial in Gujjar Khan. In one year, he had bought an expensive (aali-shaan) house in EE block of Defence Housing Society in Lahore. Another senior player Shoaib Malik is counted among the richest sportsmens of Pakistan.

Salman Butt’s wealth

Daily Nawa-e-Waqt reported that Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt came from a middle class family and was living in Johar Town but had bought a number of plots in Lahore’s most valued housing societies. Kamran Akmal came from a simple family but now has two one-canal houses in Lahore Defence, in addition to an Internet Café. He and his brothers own expensive cars.

India responsible for flood!

Great Jamaatud Dawa leader Hafiz Saeed was quoted in daily Pakistan as saying that India was responsible for the historic flood that hit Pakistan and destroyed people’s lives. This was done by India by allowing water to flow into Pakistani rivers. :rotfl: He said India was also building dams on the rivers belonging to Pakistan for which it was being helped financially by western powers while Pakistani government watched without any reaction

Israel did it!

Daily Aajkal quoted Iranian president Ahmadinejad as saying that the attack on the Al Quds rally in Quetta was carried out according to a plan prepared by Israel, as no Muslim could have attacked a procession taken in favour of the Palestinian Muslims. The Quetta killing of Shia in the Al Quds rally was owned by Lashkar Jhangvi Alami, which is a part of Al Qaeda.

PM has houses worth 16 crore!

According to daily Express, Prime Minister Gilani has declared his assets at Rs 67 lakh while the entire land belonging to his family is only two and half squares. Yet the PM had acquired two houses in the Lahore Defence area worth Rs 8 crore each. He had sold his house of two kanals to meet his election expenses, but now on the same land a new house was coming up complete with fountains including a bomb-proof boundary wall worth Rs 28 crore built at government expense.

Diary of a Social Buttefly from TFT
Last night I slept without my AC on full blast. That means that summers are going. And that means winters are coming. And that means wedding and party season is also coming.

I told this to Janoo yesterday and he said that I had astounding powers of seduction. Or was it reduction? Or deduction? All I know is that he is impress with me. And so he should be! After all I’ve been to Kinnaird College and Convent of Jesus and Mary. Koi mazaak hai? And this also, when only khandani khaata peetas used to get admission and not just any old aira vagheras.

You know, if I was to start a school – which I never will because I tau can’t do all that bhaag dorh and work shirk – anyways, if I was to start a school, I would be least bothered about children’s test results and things. I wouldn’t have any of these stuppid jaisay admission tests. I would do only one check up. That of bagground. Those with good baggrounds – children of sugar mill wallahs, and big textile typhoons and other business magnets and big landlords would get in foran. Janoo, who was sitting there as I was telling this to Mulloo over the phone, asked me later, “And where do you stand on children of generals, civil servants and politicians? Would they get into your exclusive school?”

Hmm, must say I’m a bit double minded about that. As far as being khataa peeta is concerned, there’s nobody as blessed as generals and afsars and politicians. But are they khandanis? Well if the politicians were landlords in the first place then tau they’ll get admission, I told Janoo. “So your selective school is open to khandani chors? How reassuring. What about the rest?”

I think so if they’ve had money for thirty years then they become khandani.

“So the generals who had their snouts in the trough during Zia’s time, they’re all khandani now?” asked Janoo. “Bhai, I don’t know,” I said. “Why are you eating my head with such stuppid stuppid questions?” “Because you raised the subject.. .”

“I didn’t raise anything, achha? All I’m saying is that wedding season is coming and my friend Bubbles who does event managing is saying times are so bad that even khaata peeta types, poor things, are having to make do with just four functions worth five crores rather than six functions for eight. Honestly, it’s so heart rendering. What-what else is this economic slum going to force on us?”

“I shudder to think,” said Janoo.

SuchGup from TFT
Damage control

When Mush launched his party in London, he fired some pretty nasty salvos at The Man of Steel. The Man didn’t respond in the same personal style and bided his time. Later, his partisans filed a charge sheet against Mush and waited for the response. Mush & Co were all set to display copies of The Man of Steel’s “maafi nama” or plea for forgiveness which led to his exile in 2000, at their party convention in Manchester. But a “healing hand” from London, says our mole, stopped this revelation in the nick of time. This healing touch came from the khakis’ most prominent and long-standing arms dealer, who has often been involved in acts of damage control. He divides his time between two plush homes, one in London and the other in Isloo. This retired brigadier, whose arms dealing began in the 1980s reign of Tyrant Terry Thomas, has all the efficacy of one who doles out the goodies. And so it was with Mush; he back pedaled in the matter of The Man of Steel and no more was heard from him. After the Manchester convention, when asked why he’d omitted mention of the maafi nama, Mush said he forgot.

PS: we hear the Brigadier is careful to employ relatives of the high and mighty in his arms dealing company so that he remains in favour whoever happens to roam the corridors of power. So, who’s at the receiving end these days? No prizes for guessing.

Miffed majesty

His Majesty Al-King is said to be miffed with The Man of Steel. This is because, we hear, he was very keen on a quick unification of the Leagues, including The Man, the Pir of Pugs and the Chories. But The Man refused to play ball, Al-King or no Al-King. His Majesty is said to be keen on a joint front against Hubby because he is a Shia, as was his late wife Big Ben. Hubby has been asking for an invitation to the Holy Land for months, we hear, but Al-King hasn’t extended the olive branch yet.

Pakistan has existed for 13 centuries if one has to go by the following excerpt in Pakistan studies
“…as a matter of fact, Pakistan came to be established for the first time when the Arabs led by Muhammad-bin-Qasim occupied Sindh and Multan in the early years of the eighth century, and established Muslim rule in this part of the South-Asian Sub-continent. Pakistan under the Arabs comprised the Lower Indus Valley.”

“… during the 11th century the Ghaznavid Empire comprised what is now Pakistan and Afghanistan. During the 12th century the Ghaznavids lost Afghanistan, and their rule came to be confined to Pakistan… By the 13th century, Pakistan had spread to include the whole of Northern India and Bengal… Under the Khiljis Pakistan moved further Southward to include a greater part of Central India and the Deccan… Many Mongols accepted Islam. As such Pakistan remained safe for Islam… During the 16th century, ‘Hindustan’ disappeared and was completely absorbed in ‘Pakistan’… Under Aurangzeb the Pakistan spirit gathered in strength. This evoked the opposition of the Hindus… After the death of Aurangzeb in 1707, the process of the disintegration of Mughal Rule set in, and weakened the Pakistan Spirit… The shape of Pakistan in the 18th Century was thus more or less the same as it was under the Ghaznavids in the 11th century.”

“Shah Waliullah accordingly appealed to Ahmad Shah Durrani, the ruler of Afghanistan and ‘Pakistan’ to come to the rescue of the Muslims of Mughal India, and save them from the tyrannies of the Marhattas… Ahmad Shah Durrani died in 1773, and with his death things became dark for the Muslims both in ‘Pakistan’ and Mughal India. In the ‘Pakistan’ territories the Sikhs raised their head in the Punjab and became a great headache for the successors of Ahmad Shah Durrani… In the ‘Pakistan’ territories, where a Sikh state had come to be established, the Muslims were denied the freedom of religion. The Mujahideen set up an Islamic state in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) which was a manifestation of Pakistan spirit… Thus by the middle the 19th century both ‘Pakistan’ and Hindustan had ceased to exist; instead British India had come into existence. Although Pakistan was created in August 1947, yet except for its name, the present-day Pakistan has existed, as a more or less single entity, for centuries.”

Damage control
This healing touch came from the khakis’ most prominent and long-standing arms dealer, who has often been involved in acts of damage control. He divides his time between two plush homes, one in London and the other in Isloo. This retired brigadier, whose arms dealing began in the 1980s reign of Tyrant Terry Thomas, has all the efficacy of one who doles out the goodies. And so it was with Mush; he back pedaled in the matter of The Man of Steel and no more was heard from him.
That would be Brigadier Niaz Ahmed, who was also involved in various shady nuke deals and Bank of Credit and Commerce International, which at one time was reputed to be "biggest clandestine money network in history" and financed the Soviet Jihad, various other ISI drug money laundering schemes and payments for nuke deals. Trivia: The movie "international" which talks about the shady bank which finances shady deals was loosely based on this bank.

Gung ho posture by India
Azz am Khali
It is well known that Pakistan is ahead of India by 15 to 20 years ( i thought that was 1400 donkey "ears") as far as the nuclear missile programme is concerned, and that it has a potent capability to respond even if it is subjected to a nuclear strike by the Indians. Hence, this forced the Indian leadership to fall in USA’s lap and compromise its nuclear programme in return for American technology, which the Indians believe that it will allow them to achieve parity in the field of nuclear weapons with Pakistan.
Above all, it is the responsibility of our government to make it clear to the Indian administration, and its supporters in the West, that if India thinks it can defeat Pakistan in three weeks or months, Pakistan will respond with full force which would ensure the total destruction of the Indian military infrastructure and its economy. But as it is sheer madness to think about a nuclear war between the two neighbouring countries, it is equally important that the Indians are made to understand that Pakistan will not hesitate to use its strategic weapons in case the India decides to follow the path of self-destruction. Certainly, the statement of the Congress leader should be enough to open the eyes of the US administration that is now asking Pakistan to open another front in North Waziristan, so that NATO troops can comfortably fight the Afghanistan war.
The US is aware of the fact that action by the Pakistan army in North Waziristan will be quite a treacherous affair, which can only be carried out if our economy improves dramatically, especially after the hit it has taken due to the unprecedented floods. In addition, Pak army would require uninterrupted supply of weapons that could play a vital role if the insurgents are to be defeated quickly in North Waziristan. But it would not be proper, if the US makes a half-hearted attempt to supply the much needed arms and ammunition to the Pakistani forces. One would, therefore, expect that the Pakistani representatives would be able to successfully negotiate terms and conditions that will not only help to stabilise Pakistan’s economy, but would also result in the provision of weapons that will allow our brave soldiers to win yet another war against the insurgents.
Pakistanis should also make it clear to the US administration that they must use their influence to find a respectable solution for the Kashmir dispute, and make it clear to the Indians that they must stop financing and training insurgents in Balochistan. Because unless the Indians adhere to the internationally accepted norms of good behaviour, it will not be possible for the US and the western world to achieve anything worthwhile as far as their strategic interests for this important region are concerned.

They have no clue what has happened in the global nuclear weapons program.
All of these are in the false talk and to come up with something to get over the insecurity.

They have no clue to what is happening to their world.

Why bring in India for their own problem elsewhere.

There is nobody to help Pakistan in this world. Not even PRC or the west.

Pakistan suffering trade losses because of its hostility to India:

Tense relations with India are costing Pakistan $1.8 billion in annual trade and that can be saved by changing the policy to one based on the concept of ‘trade now peace later’, suggests a regional think tank in its latest report.

“The report has tried to sell an idea, which is opposite to what is the policy of Islamabad towards New Delhi,” said former secretary foreign affairs Akram Zaki. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has also advocated ‘trade first then peace’ between both the countries, he added.
