….In interviews, however, American intelligence officials and high-ranking military officers said that Pakistanis were indeed flown to safety, in a series of nighttime airlifts that were approved by the Bush Administration. The Americans also said that what was supposed to be a limited evacuation apparently slipped out of control, and, as an unintended consequence, an unknown number of Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters managed to join in the exodus. The Administration ordered the United States Central Command to set up a special air corridor to help insure the safety of the Pakistani rescue flights from Kunduz to the northwest corner of Pakistan… [According to] an Indian assessment, thirtythree hundred prisoners surrendered… A few hundred Taliban were also turned over to other tribal leaders… That left between four and five thousand men unaccounted for. “Where are the balance?” … None of the American intelligence officials I spoke with were able to say with certainty how many Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters were flown to safety, or may have escaped from Kunduz by other means. India, wary of antagonizing the Bush Administration, chose not to denounce the airlift at the time….Diplomatic notes protesting the airlift were sent to Britain and the United States. Neither responded… Indian intelligence was convinced that many of the airlifted fighters would soon be infiltrated into Kashmir. There was a precedent for this… Our reading is that the fighters can go only to Kashmir….” (source: centre for research on globalization)

The ‘airlift of evil’

.
Yet in the past week, a half dozen or more Pakistani air force cargo planes landed in the Taliban-held city of Kunduz and evacuated to Pakistan hundreds of non-Afghan soldiers who fought alongside the Taliban and even al-Qaida against the United States. What’s wrong with this picture?

THE PENTAGON, whose satellites and drones are able to detect sleeping guerrillas in subterranean caverns, claims it knows nothing of these flights. When asked about the mysterious airlift at a recent Pentagon briefing, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, denied knowledge of such flights. Myers backpedaled a bit, saying that, given the severe geography of the country, it might be possible to duck in and out of mountain valleys and conduct such an airlift undetected.

krishnan,

thanks...that is a smoking gun if any....of how the war on terror was nothing but a GOAT. Indians are expedient when it comes to US interest and the patience of these powers for Pakistan's indiscretions is amazing. Not even an event like 9/11 has changed their approach on Pakistan. The only use of Pakistan is to keep India down.

shiv has been stating that all this while that the power that wants India boxed down is the US. Pakistan is as much a cat's paw for the US and the West as it is to China. These leaks and the incident of the "Airlift of the Evil" is a clear indictment of the US and its poodle the UK.

India should neither forget or forgive these guys for their crimes of omission and commission.

rangudu,

I have always maintined a clear vision of what we must do to Pakistan. Take over. That's the only way we can ensure lasting peace in the Asian sub-continent, and balance the Chinese threat. Americans will just stand and look and might cheer if we start winning.Russia might provide support in case china tries to jump in.
The real question that haunts me is "How?" The strategy to take over governance in Pakistan region is not even vaguely conceived by any politician in India, though some might have it in the back of their mind.
The crucial part of the mission would be safeguarding Paki nukes, preventing any retaliatory use of the nukes, and swiftly taking over the Pak Army's remainging forces that survive after the initial surprise.Believe me, agression is needed for this, we cannot just cannot take over Pakistan if we keep talking to them.We got to hit, hit hard, swiftly, consolidate, eliminate resistance and then govern.
One of the first moves should be a swift cyber attack on their communication networks, followed by a heavenly blizkreig on their communication sattelites, and then eventually, storm in from land, sea and air.
We shouldn't even give them a day to react. How do we secure their nukes though.......still haunts me.

Breaking news from WikiLeaks :-).

'Al Queda high-command shared 9/11 attacks research with USA and its allies'

The information is contained in a 2001 cable from Indian Ambassador to Pakistan.

"To prevent another potential attack, we need to keep channels of co-operation and information sharing open…our goal is not only to bring the perpetrators of this [9/11] attack to justice, but also to begin a dialogue that will reduce tensions between USA and Al Queda high-command," the ambassador said.
And what would be the purpose of such a dialouge? In order to ensure that such attacks don't take place in the future, find ways and means of resolving the Palestinaisn Israeli, and the larger Arab Israeli conflict, cede colonial control of Arab oil resources to their rightful owners, the Arabs; and a roadmap to withdraw all US forces from the region.

I see some similarities of this fiasco with that of H1N1 Influenza in terms of the tensions created between nations and the dynamics created around US DoS, it will be interesting if there are things related to H1N1 in the leaks. If anyone finds anything, please do post.

This is part of the global change in the news update so that there is no internet based news discussion(reality based) which is far different from the mainstream news reports.
The difference between mainstream news reports and underground news information had grown so large that they had to do a 'reset' in the news also.

US cable: China leaders ordered hacking on Google

(AP) – 2 hours ago

BEIJING (AP) — Sources told American diplomats that hacking attacks against Google were ordered by China's top ruling body and a senior leader demanded action after finding search results critical of him, leaked U.S. government cables show.

The American Embassy sent a cable to Washington saying a source told diplomats the Chinese government coordinated late last year's attacks on Google under the direction of the Politburo Standing Committee.
....
....
A separate cable released by WikiLeaks showed a Politburo member demanded action against Google after looking for his own name on the search engine and finding criticism of him.

The May 18, 2009, cable did not identify the leader but The New York Times reported it was propaganda chief Li Changchun, the fifth-ranked official in the country.

The cable classified as confidential cited a source as saying the Chinese official had realized that Google's worldwide site is uncensored, capable of Chinese language searches and search results, and that there is a link from the home page of its China site, google.cn, to google.com.

The official "allegedly entered his own name and found results critical of him," and asked three government ministries to write a report about Google and "demand that the company ceases its 'illegal activities,' which include linking to google.com," the cable said.
These people are truly insecure.

Wikileaks: India sought US help to deal with 'assertive China'
China's neighbours, including India, are worried about the Asian giant's increasing assertiveness, the Wikileaks cables have revealed.

In a cable sent to the US State Department in February 2010, US ambassador to Beijing, Jon Huntsman had said that Indian ambassador S Jayashankar had sought closer co-operation with the US because of "China's more aggressive approach", the 'Guardian' reported.

Earlier, when US President Barack Obama had visited China in late 2009, a joint Sino-American statement had called for the two countries to “work together to promote peace, stability and development in that (South Asia) region”. This had, in turn, raised more worries about China's role in Asia.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in his visit to US in late 2009 had raised worries over China officially, specifically talking about 'China's greater assertiveness'. The PM had also brought up the mention of India and Pakistan resolving their disputes in the US-China joint statement.

India is not the only country worried by Chinese assertiveness. According to a Guardian report, Japanese officials also filed similar complaints to the American ambassador. Japanese diplomats complained that officials were "aggressive and difficult" during summit preparations.

Japan was also concerned about rising tensions in the East China Sea. The cable claimed that it had specifically warned about "the increased aggressiveness of Chinese 'coastguard' and naval units…" which had provoked "many dangerous encounters with Japanese civilian and self-defence force ships".

Russia saw Pak as 'greatest' threat to region: WikiLeaks
Russia views Pakistan as the “greatest” potential threat to the regional stability and has de facto imposed embargo on the sale of weapons to Islamabad, according to a secret US diplomatic cable leaked by vestibules WikiLeaks website.

In his ‘secret’ dispatch, US Ambassador to Moscow William J Burns said Russia viewed Pakistan as the greatest potential threat to regional stability and Russian Foreign Minister ruled out weapons sales to Pakistan as far back as 2003.

“Russian decision-making process has led to a de facto embargo on weapons transfers to Iraq, where Russia is concerned over leakages to Iraqi insurgents and a-Qaeda; to a hands-off policy towards Pakistan, the country Russia views as the greatest potential threat to regional stability (with then-Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov ruling out weapons sales to Pakistan as far back as 2003),” Mr Burns communicated in dispatch to Washington in October 2007.

Analysing the Russian arms export in which India and China remain big-ticket customers, Mr Burns wrote: “While Russian experts still downplay the ability of the US to displace Russia in the Indian arms market, for reasons of cost and the legacy of decades’ old dependence, they recognise increasing American inroads and growing influence.”

“Senior officials maintain that Russia does take into account the impact on the stability of the region in determining whether to sell weapons and shares our concern about weapons falling into terrorists’ hands,” Mr Burns, currently Under Secretary for Political Affairs with the State Department, noted in his analysis of the Russian arms exports.

2 Years before 26/11, US asked Pak. to crack down on LeT/JuD
Exactly two years before the 2008 Mumbai attacks, American officials pressured the Pakistan government to crack down on the Lashker-e-Taiba and its front Jamaat-ud-Dawah but were unable to make much headway, according to a secret U.S. diplomatic cable.

A cable sent on November 27, 2006 by former US Ambassador to Pakistan Ryan C Crocker, one of the hundreds released by WikiLeaks, said the U.S. embassy had raised the operations of the two groups with “contacts throughout the Government of Pakistan” after the LeT was designated a terrorist organisation under U.N. Security Council resolution 1267 the previous year.

Mr Crocker took up the activities of LeT, Al Akhtar Trust and Al Rashid Trust — all designated under UNSC resolution 1267 — with the then Foreign Secretary Riaz Khan and the then National Security Advisor Tariq Aziz while other U.S. officials engaged the Foreign Ministry’s U.N. Directorate and the Information Ministry.

“No (Government of Pakistan) official, however, has committed to taking direct action to close the operations of these entities,” Mr Crocker wrote in the cable two years before 10 terrorists launched by the LeT carried out attacks in India’s financial hub killing 166 people.

During his meetings with Pakistani officials, Mr Crocker presented “a press report on the declaration of the Ministry of Defence Parliamentary Secretary that he was proud to be a member of LeT and that he seeks to extend support to jihadi organisations when they seek his ‘cooperation’”, the cable said.

Then Foreign Secretary Riaz Khan asked Mr Crocker whether the U.S. had evidence linking JuD to terrorist activity and the envoy “replied affirmatively, noting that the (U.S. Government) has shared such information with (Government of Pakistan) intelligence agencies”.

Mr Crocker wrote that he “advised the Foreign Secretary that there is a growing concern in the (U.S. Government) about LeT/JuD support to the insurgency in Afghanistan”.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010 ... 7RIYADH367
SUMMARY: Assistant to the President for Homeland
Security and Counterterrorism Francis Fragos Townsend covered
both counterterrorism cooperation and regional political
issues in her meeting with Foreign Minister Prince Saud
Al-Faisal at his home in Jeddah on February 6. Saud
described the February 2 arrests of ten suspected terrorism
financiers in Jeddah and Medina as a positive step that could
well result in other leads and arrests. On the proposed
Charities Commission, Saud said that the SAG is leaning
toward establishing a government entity that directly
disburses charitable funds. He characterized engagement with
Iran as a two-pronged approach involving frank dialogue and
security pressure. "We will supply the logic and you supply
the pressure,"
he said, adding that the US Navy's recent
strengthening of presence in the Gulf was a good example of
the force element. In response to APHSCT Townsend's request
to use SAG influence with Arabsat to block Al-Manar
broadcasting, Prince Saud replied that Iranian-financed
cultural centers in Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan are a
greater source of Iranian influence in the region than
Al-Manar television. On Arab-Israeli issues, Prince Saud
hoped Secretary Rice would return to the region soon to
address the "key substantive issues" of Jerusalem and
Palestinian refugees. In a subsequent private meeting,
APHSCT Townsend renewed US concerns about the Saudi
Ambassador in the Philippines; Saud said that the ambassador
would be ending his tour shortly. END SUMMARY

Cables Suggest Mideast Resists U.S. on Cutting Terrorists’ Cash

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/06/world ... ncing.html
A classified memo sent by Mrs. Clinton last December made it clear that residents of Saudi Arabia and its neighbors, all allies of the United States, are the chief financial supporters of many extremist activities. “It has been an ongoing challenge to persuade Saudi officials to treat terrorist financing emanating from Saudi Arabia as a strategic priority,” the cable said, concluding that “donors in Saudi Arabia constitute the most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide.”

The dispatch and others offered similarly grim views about the United Arab Emirates (“a strategic gap” that terrorists can exploit), Qatar (“the worst in the region” on counterterrorism) and Kuwait (“a key transit point”). The cable stressed the need to “generate the political will necessary” to block money to terrorist networks — groups that she said were “threatening stability in Pakistan and Afghanistan and targeting coalition soldiers.”
While federal officials can point to some successes — prosecutions, seizures of money and tightened money-laundering regulations in foreign countries — the results have often been frustrating, the cables show. As the United States has pushed for more aggressive crackdowns on suspected supporters of terrorism, foreign leaders have pushed back. In private meetings, they have accused American officials of heavy-handedness and of presenting thin evidence of wrongdoing by Arab charities or individuals, according to numerous State Department cables.

Kuwaiti officials, for example, resisted what they called “draconian” measures sought by the United States against a prominent charity and dismissed allegations against it as “unconvincing,” according to one cable.
The documents are filled with secret government intelligence on possible terrorist-financing plots, like the case of a Somali preacher who was reportedly touring Sweden, Finland and Norway last year to look for money and recruits for the Shabab, a militant group in Somalia, or that of a Pakistani driver caught with about $240,000 worth of Saudi riyals stuffed behind his seat. One memo even reported on a possible plot by the Iranians to launder $5 billion to $10 billion in cash through the Emirates’ banks as part of a broader effort to “stir up trouble” among the Persian Gulf states, though it was not clear how much of the money might be channeled to militants.
But many other State Department cables draw the opposite conclusion and cite the group’s ability to generate money almost at will from wealthy individuals and sympathetic groups throughout the Middle East while often staying a step ahead of counterterrorism officials.

“Terrorists avoid money transfer controls by transferring amounts below reporting thresholds and using reliable cash couriers, hawala, and money grams,” a recent cable warned. “Emerging trends include mobile banking, pre-paid cards, and Internet banking.”
In hundreds of cables focusing on terrorist financing, the problem takes on an air of intractability, as American officials speak of the seeming ease with which terrorists are able to move money, the low cost of carrying out deadly attacks, and the difficulty of stopping it. Interdictions are few, and resistance is frequent.

In Kuwait, for instance, American officials have voiced repeated concerns that Islamic charities — largely unregulated by the government there — are using philanthropic donations to finance terrorism abroad. But a Kuwaiti minister, in a meeting last year with the United States ambassador, “was as frank and pessimistic as ever when it came to the subject of apprehending and detaining terror financiers and facilitators under Kuwait’s current legal and political framework,” a memo summarizing the meeting said.

Saudi Arabia, a critical military and diplomatic ally, emerges in the cables as the most vexing of problems. Intelligence officials there have stepped up their spying on militants in neighboring Yemen, and they provided the tip that helped uncover the recent parcel bombs. But while the Saudis have made some progress, “terrorist funding emanating from Saudi Arabia remains a serious concern,” according to a cable in February. Mrs. Clinton’s memo two months earlier said Al Qaeda, the Taliban, Lashkar-e-Taiba and other groups “probably raise millions of dollars annually from Saudi sources, often during Hajj and Ramadan.” Officials said they believed that fund-raisers for extremist groups had often descended on the pilgrims to seek money for their causes.

The United States Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, reported in February that the Saudi authorities remained “almost completely dependent on the C.I.A.” for leads and direction on terrorist financing.

...

In conversations last week, Obama administration officials said that since the latest cable released from WikiLeaks, from February 2010, the Saudis had made notable progress, including the arrests of some major donors to terrorist groups. Despite such pledges of cooperation between the countries, tensions have occasionally flared behind the scenes. In 2007, a senior Bush administration official, Frances Fragos Townsend, told her Saudi counterparts in Riyadh that Mr. Bush was “quite concerned” about the level of cooperation from the Saudis on terrorist financing, and she brought a personal letter on the subject from the president to King Abdullah, according to a cable summarizing the exchange.

Ms. Townsend questioned whether the kingdom’s ambassador to the Philippines, Mohammed Ameen Wali, might be involved in supporting terrorism because of his involvement with two people suspected of being financiers, the summary said.

Prince Saud al-Faisal, the Saudi foreign minister, challenged the assertion, however, saying the ambassador might be guilty of “bad judgment rather than intentional support for terrorism,” and he countered with an assertion of his own: an unnamed American bank handling the Saudi Embassy’s money in Washington was performing unnecessary audits and asking “inappropriate and aggressive questions.”

American diplomats said that while the Saudis appeared earnest in wanting to stanch the flow of terrorist money, they often lacked the training and expertise to do it. “Their capabilities often fall short of their aspirations,” a cable last November said.

Saudi leaders appear equally resigned to the situation, according to the cables. “We are trying to do our best,” Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, who leads the Saudis’ anti-terrorism activities, was quoted as telling Mr. Holbrooke, the special representative to the region, in a May 2009 meeting.

But, he said, “if money wants to go” to terrorist causes, “it will go.”

The flip side is, if we don't take over Pakistan, we have to deal with increasing insurgency, taunts by Pakistan, misguided calls for Azaadi of Kashmir,Chinese taunts and even taunts from America. What do you think is easier to deal with? The one factor that comes to play decisively is the intervention in political matters by Armies. It seals the bickering for a long span of time.India needs to expand its control in S Asia, not reduce it.By pwning (owning) Pakistan we return to the pre-1947 scenario.

9. (SBU) Mali - At 12:30 p.m. on June 18, RSO Bamako was notified by the Surveillance Detection Team that a man was closely observing the Chief of Mission,s (COM,s) residence. The man then walked over to the guard post and questioned the guards about the COM and why so much security was needed. An investigator interviewed the man and discovered that he is an Indian national with an Indian passport that displayed extensive travel to West Africa. (RSO Bamako Spot Report)

17. (S//NF) SCA - India - LT member Shafiq Khafa possibly preparing for operations: Tearline reports, &Hussein, an India-based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LT) member, continued operational planning on three tasks in early June. The tasks were associated with a possible operation against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendar Modi, the establishment of a training camp, and unspecified work involving a car. Hussein would coordinate his activities with an India-based colleague identified as Sameer.8

18. (S//REL TO USA, FVEY) Separate tearline indicates, &Pakistan-based Shafiq Khafa prepared in mid-June with India-based associate S J for possible operations in India. Khafa was looking for information on possible training sites in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.8

19. (S//NF) DS/TIA/ITA notes earlier credible tearline suggests Khafa,s network is striving to stand up two teams in southern India that rely on the support of LT members based in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Nepal. Although specific details of planned LT attacks remain unknown, late-May intelligence indicates Khafa,s cells were engaged in surveillance activities of potential targets, likely in southern India. Early-May reporting further suggests Kerala or Tamil Nadu may be used as a base of operations following the establishment of a facilitation team in Sri Lanka, with the estimated time of completion for setting up the facilitation route and camps to be two to three months. What needs to be done is not necessarily a takeover, but similar to what was done in Germany after WW2. The TSPA has to be removed from the scene, so a new power center can nurture an open society.

Wikileaks has set up a form for interested media to request access to the cables.

Jitesh, the "self appointed frontrunner" thing is DDM media hype. Hilary did use those words, but referring to all four countries, India, Japan, Germany, and Brazil. In the context, there was nothing wrong with the words. DDM grabbed on to it because it was the first day of the leak and they couldn't find anything controversial referring India.

Would you mind checking if a cable is already posted here, before posting it? Many are repeats.

Well, the exact modality will emerge, eventually after the military intervention is successful. As it stands today, TSP is just a handful of thugs who manipulate finance sources in UK,USA and Middle East. These thugs are headed by Zardari, who has investments in UK and UAE and perhaps in a lot of other places.he is just riding the sympathy wave after Ms Bhutto's death and this wave will fizzle out fast.

To change the society the education and media has to be changed. This requires political control.
But the deep state is too deep that this is a long term project.

WikiLeaks Ready to Release Giant 'Insurance' File if Shut Down
Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, has circulated across the internet an encrypted “poison pill” cache of uncensored documents suspected to include files on BP and Guantanamo Bay.

One of the files identified this weekend by The Sunday Times — called the “insurance” file — has been downloaded from the WikiLeaks website by tens of thousands of supporters, from America to Australia.

Assange warns that any government that tries to curtail his activities risks triggering a new deluge of state and commercial secrets.

The military papers on Guantanamo Bay, yet to be published, have been supplied by Bradley Manning, Assange’s primary source until his arrest in May. Other documents that Assange is confirmed to possess include an aerial video of a U.S. airstrike in Afghanistan that killed civilians, BP files and Bank of America documents.
One of the key files available for download — named insurance.aes256 — appears to be encrypted with a 256-digit key. Experts said last week it was virtually unbreakable.

Cables currently released so far...
837 out of 251,287

I guess they are going to do this slow and steady for weeks or even months.

Guys,

its not a trivial matter, but should TSPA/ISI/LeT take out Modi, it would trigger a civil war in India. Modi is so hated and reviled by many in India, that an LeT attack on him will actually be justified by many on the street and in the media and above all, in the halls of power and media in the west, that it would only induce a counter reaction from his supporters. Gujarat riots will look like a picnic in contrast. Thus, as much as MMS & Co may loath Modi, I hope & pray for the sake of the country that all holes are plugged and Modi is protected at any cost, whatever that maybe. Bceause if Mumbai didn't elicit a strong response from India, is there any chance an attack on Modi will move the current ruling regime?

I think people have learnt that Pakistanis are fair game, but Indians are not. That also ties in well with the ideology of the INC, which blames Pakistan for all ills.

Jiteshn, here's the "self-appointed" cable. Very damaging but for an entirely different reason.

Rudd the butt of WikiLeaks exposé
The disclosures in the cable, posted online by the British newspaper The Guardian, will complicate Mr Rudd's already testy personal links with China after his reported reference to Chinese negotiators as ''rat f---ers'' during the Copenhagen climate change conference. :rotfl:
