in suketu mehta's book on mumbai, he talks about the concentric rings of organised crime, politicians, police, and various business interests weaving in and out of each other with all manner of overlapping interests and conflicts - with the mango person at the receiving end of all the hassles, with possibly the police next in line for the cr@p. all shades of politicians and the mafias seem to blur into each other
these games are perhaps not a surprise then...

It is now very clear. Diggy Raja is raising this issue to attack the main opposition party in the Parliament. This is a well-orchestrated political campaign that has no other merit whatsoever. The rising crescendo, from PM and now Mrs. Sonia Gandhi point to the tactics. I have no issues with the normal political battles that the INC & BJP play with each other. But, the INC is clearly willing to wager India in their political gamble. Mulford's assessment was after all correct.

I spoke to Karkare hours before 26/11 attack: Digvijay

"I have got records for that. Absolutely, I am firm on this. I did speak to him and I have stated that already," he told reporters in Guwahati.

How will a individual keep record that he had a phone call with XX ? Is it possible to save a call log of the mobile before it gets overwritten with newer data?

Isn't the only way to do that is to scan through the cell provider records and in this case, the provider says there were no calls?

In what capacity of Digvijay Singh would Sri Karkare speak to him about whats going on in Maharastra? He might talk to the Maha Mome Minster or Chief Minster. In other words what is the locus standi of Digvijay Singh in regard to the Maha ATS and police?
Is Digvijay Singh's contention that Maha police officials would rather talk to him than the chain of command in Maharastra? Isnt this subversion of the Consititution?

-
LM its should be nailed and not ignored. This guy is distorting the truth and claiming to have spoken with people who are not alive to defend themselves.

And he is underming the prosecution case in Mumbai terrorist attack.

Its a short step now for Kasab and or his lawyers to claim that the whole trial is farce when an Indian national leader is insisting about who was involved in the attack. And no one is refuting him.

Similar ( a lot of time exact :) ) things were written on here on BRF on various thread. They were treated as CTs though.

Entire UPA-1 regime specifically with Shivraj Patil was just with one agenda and that is by hook-or-crook to convince the muslims that they do not have any alternative except INC. Please please desert all other secular parites. The last nail was 26/11. Important pointers were Pragnya and Purohit.

Any analysis why Digvijay is talking like that and why BJP was partially silent will get marked as CTs here. But you never know as a CT once upon a time are realities at a later date.

Depends on how tech savvy DS is or whether he has such an aide (even from family). It is easy to set up automatic recording with most of the modern phones. In case he was using that phone as an insurance policy, for not just this supposed occasion, it would be natural to expect.

Marten ji,
would be very glad to get the electoral data. I have tracked in three phases - Varda Bhai period until Dutta Samant. Dutta Samant to Dawood -Gawli split. Dawood Gawli split-rise and ebb of SS 2009. current is incomplete.

Bji, The rot is in INC. Not helpful blaming the locals. Also it was local police that got Kasab.

Congress played Minoritiy politics post 26/11

Report in MSN India based on wikipees:
Congress played minority politics post 26/11

New Delhi: The United States believed that the Congress party backed the “outlandish” conspiracy theories over the death of Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare in the 26/11 attack for “crass” political gains.

A diplomatic cable that is part of the latest disclosures by WikiLeaks, reveals that the then US Ambassador to India, David Mulford, wrote to Washington that the Congress, despite having done well in the recent state elections, made a "cynical political calculation" to boost the conspiracy theory.

The secret cable -- sent a month after the Mumbai terrorist attack and revealed, extraordinarily, the day after senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh told The Indian Express that his first "shocked and demoralised" reaction on hearing of Karkare's death had been 'Oh my God, they (rightwing Hindu groups opposed to his probe into the Malegaon bombing) have killed him' -- shows that the US thought that the Congress went on to "implicitly endorse the conspiracy" after initially distancing itself from the then minority affairs minister AR Antulay's "completely unsubstantiated claims".

Days after Karkare's assassination, Antulay had said the chief of the Maharashtra ATS could have been a victim of "terrorism or terrorism plus something".

"Antulay's completely unsubstantiated claims gained support in the conspiracy-minded Indian-Muslim community. Hoping to foster that support for upcoming national elections, the Congress Party cynically pulled back from its original dismissal and lent credence to the conspiracy," Mulford wrote.

However, regardless of later dismissals of Antulay's claim by the Congress, the "Indian Muslim community will continue to believe they are unfairly targeted by law enforcement and that those who investigate the truth are silenced", the Ambassador added.

According to Mulford, the Congress's about-turn from initially dismissing Antulay's statement was based on narrow identity politics.

"As support seemed to swell among Muslims for Antulay's unsubstantiated claims, crass political opportunism swayed the thinking of some Congress Party leaders. What's more, the party made the cynical political calculation to lend credence to the conspiracy even after its recent emboldening state elections victories," reads the envoy's cable.

The Congress, Mulford wrote, "will readily stoop to the old caste/religious-based politics if it feels it is in its interest... While cooler heads eventually prevailed within the Congress leadership, the idea that the party would entertain such outlandish claims proved once again that many party leaders are still wedded to the old identity politics".

Antulay, the cable reads, was "probably bewildered to find that his remarks, similar in vein to what he would have routinely made in the past to attack the BJP, created such a furor this time".

On Saturday, the Congress said that the purported contents of the leaked cable were communication between a US Ambassador and his government, to which it could not react.

"All Ambassadors and High Commissioners keep on giving reports to their respective governments. This is between the two of them (Mulford and the US government). Any responsible party cannot react to claims made by anybody, which are not authenticated," Congress media department chairman Janardan Dwivedi said.
So if one wants to dig ( 8) ) deeper lets try to explore MMS reported comment to MKN when he offered to resign for the fiasco, "You did your best " etc. What did he do that failed so miserably? or what was the game plan? Was there a thread that connects the ATS chief, the L-e-T attack, and consolidating the vote bank?

ramana ji,
if you observed, my method has been to throw up the unsupportable alternative points first into the ring. As I mentioned in one of my posts above, there were two alternatives - either the "people" "allowed" or the parties in power at the time - Congress "allowed". I "presumed" that the latter cannot be "presumed" and that leaves the people onlee. That has attracted its legitimate share of criticism.

But then again, Congress did not operate in a vacuum. It had to enlist the support of local networks to do what it did. Not everyone at all levels of the aam aadmi, but some of the more entrenched and longer , "deeper" circles must have given initial access.

I had been very closely involved in directly observing the "trafficking" process, and at one stage it led me to investigate the connections that run through NE/Nepal/BD/Myanmar through several points in WB, to Bihar, Maha, and so much always led to Mumbai. At every stage, I found certain types of political influences and networks around networks that reached out to levels of the aam aadmi. It is my direct, field experience that it is not a one way process of only leaders and mafia bosses imposing their will on the "aam aadmi" - but rather a two-way process of financial and other dependence relations. Not all trafficked women are in it out of "force", etc.

Programs to clear the process fail becuase they usually follow the supposed wisdom of "clean up the top only" and the "bottom" is peachy - leave it alone. If I ever get a chance, I will see to it that both the top and the bottom are simultaneously cleaned. They depend on each other. It is a deep personally emotive issue for me - from my youth. I have no illusions about culprits being restricted to usual suspects only.

To understand what happened at Mumbai perhaps need to start looking at the family name Sasoon. Too early perhaps, and the last connection was in 1929 I think, but what the name meant has firmly remained in context ever since.

Yes they were Baghdadi Jews who settled in Mumbai as shipbuilders and businessmen. they came in 1700s to Mumbai. The Sasoon docks is named after them. Seigried Sasoon, the WWI English poet was a member of the family. The perfume maker Vidal Sasoon claims to be related to them.(?) There is an Arabic version of the name Sasoon. I wonder if the roots of the name are same as hash and the contract guys?

Can you elaborate more?

May go OT for this thread. But the real fortune of Sasoon family was made out of the opium trade. Their base was in the west of India for a long time, and the name and connections crop up in a lot of international intrigue ranging from USA to UK to "British empire" to China. They appear to have been intimately involved in the buildup to the wars that took place in China. The trail of drugs trade has remained intact.

Will BT make the leap from "Marathi" to "Maratha"? One is about locking oneself into a corner and staking the claim to the west gate of the house only. The other is about staking a claim to the "andar" of the house - the heart of India.

In Ireland, whenever the armed republicans of the IRA held on to a region or town, they did keep the area more or less clear of "vice", especially drugs. Whenever the state moved in on them - sometimes under pinpricks from the ex-master neighbour - the drugs trade emerged in an orgy of violence.

A really serious BT could have managed the same. A really ideologically motivated SS could have cleaned up the area. So much so that the local nets that facilitated D or 93 or 26/11 wold not have functioned. But then again they only decided to be Marathi and not claim the legacy of the Maratha.

For anyone inclined to do so, a request not to read my political leanings for or against BT from this.

Huh? India's a democracy now, so BT has to build a large enough coalition under those circumstances. In any case, Sharad Pawar is the Maratha overlord, but because of the democratic system, he was not strong enough to overthrow Sonia in the 90s.

Now Digvijay Singh cant' find call logs.

I think its because they dont exist.

Has he made the case of why Late Sri. Karkare would call him of all people? Is it prior contacts or to bypass existing adminstration in Maharastra? or what?

What is unique about Digvijay Singh that a chief of ATS would call him and not talk to his superior officers or political points of contact in the chain of command?

I dont know what gains he and his party seeks but his repeated claims are undermining:

1) Kasab prosecution that he and the other terrorist killed Karkare and the other ATS officers in an ambush

2) India's diplomatic dossier exchanges with TSP that rest on the basic fact that the terrorists who attacked on 26/11 came from TSP

3) The credibility of Sri Karkare that he is worried about phantom Hindu terrorists when he was about to face real TSP terrorists in afew hours and lost his life.

4) Credibility of INC that was accused by US Ambassador Mulford in Wikipees of being cynical and manipulating minority vote banks after 26/11 terrorist attack.

This guy is bad news on all these counts.

So what gain is he getting with all these losses?

Digvijay Singh should be encouraged to make even more outrageous claims. They will have to invent more lies to hide the previous lies. it is good for the long run. How else will the entire power structure behind him be exposed? Without that exposure how can you do the necessary clean up? It all needs a completely new restart.

The INC is ultimately making a fool out of all of its spokespersons - but the one leader remains silent and issues only vague statements of broad non-committal nature. it can only reinforce the belief that the one leader really has no clue about what to do - and hence the party is shielding the leader as someone unsullied by explicit utterances.

This is not a good political strategy for India. The grassroots will welcome a leader if he/she takes a clear cut stand on issues - even if it turns out to be a blunder, but then that leader should have the courage to acknowledge his/her blunder. Decisive is the keyword. The INC is risking its political future by appearing to experiment with various lines through mouthpieces - all the while concentrating all appearance of authority in a single person who remains inscrutable, detached, without a voice of his/her own. This is a country which even expects the most inscrutable divine to come and walk and talk like ordinary humans. Here we are increasingly getting the impression of a non-person, a non-existent entity. How long will that carry through?

Even if they exist and karkare did talk to him, they prove nothing. A smart politician would have kept records just to pretend as if he is trapped and then take out the records.

Karkare may even have said someday that his life is in danger of right wing elements. But right wing elements are not just Hindus. Is Islamic terrorism left wing? If there are just 2 wings, left and right, everyone except Communists come in right wing. For e.g. in US hardcore Christian politicians are considered right wing politicians.

DS is a King of a very small town in MP. I have been to that town.

The town is so small that it had at that time no red light, and narrow meandering streets and is in middle of nowhere with Bhopal , Indore etc. few hours drive. I think that has made him servile to the G-Company as he lacks the confidence and grandeur of Scindia, but still craves for it and will jump when he is asked to just walk.

Torrent of lies continues from the mouth of congress general secretary Digvijay Singh

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/did-k ... g/724706/2
Continuing his tirade against the BJP, Singh said immediately after the incident, former Governor Julio Rebeiro had also said that Karkare had met him a few days before the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Karkare had told Rebeiro that "he was sad as senior BJP leaders Lal Krishna Advani, Rajnath Singh and some Hindu outfits were levelling baseless allegations against him and had raised questions on his honesty and integrity.

Without being too cynical, we can safely say that now Digvijay has inserted himself into the Kasab court case.

My guess is that we will soon see Kasab's lawyers either ask for Digvijay as a witness or at least ask for additional phone records, which are not available. Then, we'll see attempts to bring a "senior" leader on the stand as evidence.

The attempt will be to muddy the waters abut Pakistani involvement and this is clearly something that Digvijay knows - otherwise he would not have made this announcement so soon after Kasab's claim on Karkare.

Essentially we'll have another Samjhauta express on our hands, where in spite of US treasury department indictments against Pakistanis - elements of our administration insist that the yindoos did it.

Given Digvijay's public mollycoddling of the families of terrorists in Azamgarh - we have to assume that this is exactly what he's aiming for.

Congress Double Speak by Commi Kapoor
...
The Congress party has a history of doublespeak. To run with the hare and hunt with the hound may be justifiable to some degree in a national party which has to pitch an appeal which cuts across caste, creed and regional divides.

But the ruling party’s recent mixed messages on sensitive and emotive issues like the Batla House encounter, welcoming back Kashmiri militants, resuming the dialogue with Pakistan and the formation of Telangana is simply duplicitous, divisive, damaging to the national fabric and irresponsible. ....
It is a common political ploy for a leader to adopt a stance which is at variance with the stated position of the party and claim he is acting independently. In a disciplined, authoritarian and hierarchical party like the Congress, this is simply not possible.

The truth is that the party finds it convenient at times to speak in different voices while addressing different constituencies. It plays the game of good cop and bad cop, with the Gandhis keeping an enigmatic silence and their options open.

The strategy of speaking from both sides of one’s mouth cannot be a permanent solution. At some point the contradictions are bound to catch up. This is what has happened in Andhra Pradesh, where the Congress finds itself caught in a cleft stick. To woo the Telangana electorate it promised a separate state. Now, faced with a backlash from other parts of Andhra, it has retracted and tried to buy time by setting up a pointless committee.

But will this really work? As the saying goes, you may be able to fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time.

Recalling Karkare

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/Recal ... are/724896
As the self-appointed captain of the Congress party’s B team, he has styled himself as the party’s Faustian secular spokesman even if it has meant unnecessarily rubbing his own colleagues the wrong way. His attempt since to play the same hedging game on the controversy yet again (“I never said RSS was behind 26/11”), however, falls flat in the context in which he revived the controversy. He made the comments at the December 6 launch of a book, RSS Ki Saazish? 26/11? (26/11, an RSS conspi-racy?), by Aziz Burney, editor-in-chief of Urdu Sahara newspaper.Singh may probably not be aware but, besides Antulay and Mushrif and now Burney, there are scores in Pakistan who subscribe or want to subscribe to this conspiracy theory, one that the perpetrators of 26/11 themselves tried to push in the days after the attack. This writer had met Karkare a day before he was killed and filed a news report saying that he seemed to be rather tormented by the allegations being made against him and his team for unearthing an alleged Hindu extremist link to Malegaon, including by no less a leader than the BJP’s then prime ministerial candidate, L.K. Advani (IE, November 27, 2008). Hours after the report was published, it was prominently displayed on the homepage of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the religious cover of the outlawed Lashkar-e-Toiba, and stayed there for days. There was no commentary or explanation, but the message could not be missed. Many months later, Pakistani American Lashkar operative David Headley reportedly told his interrogators that he had bought red holy threads from a Hindu temple in Mumbai while planning for the attack and the 10 gunmen who came by boat from Karachi had tied them around their wrists. Unfortunately for Lashkar, Ajmal Kasab did not get killed as planned and damaged the key obfuscation element of its strategy. Singh may have his motives for bringing back a ghost from 26/11 to perpetrate his streak of dangerous “secular politics”. It could be the shock and awe of the pathetic Congress performance in Bihar and the big test of assembly elections in less than two years in Uttar Pradesh, whose Muslim constituency Singh has been assiduously cultivating on behalf of the Congress. Or it could be yet another attempt to light small fires all over the place to deflect attention from the inferno of the spectrum scandal. But the motive does not matter. Singh’s cynical brand of politics could once again feed the fears of the Muslim community, stoking a sense of persecution and alienation. But it may not produce any electoral dividends for the Congress if the outcome of similar attempts the party made in the late ’80s is any indication. In fact, the party may actually be better off with a little more intellectual arrogance.

No losses to the Party.

Meanwhile,
Kasab's lawyers have argued that death for the Pakistani terrorist will make him a martyr, hence if a sentence is to be given, life-term is appropriate.

Someone should ask him: if he did have evidence about an ongoing case, why did he not submit it to the honorable court?

Uncle. Already forgotten David Headley urf Daoud Gilani a US undercover agent?

Chefs->ISI-> LeT etc.
But lookee here at Amaresh Misra's article published on Nov 27 2008 blaming the Mossad and RSS while the attacks were in progress. It's almost as if the article was ready, waiting for the author to hit submit. Now we have Digvijay Singh propounding the same theory in the press and by attending Burney's book publication. So some people in INC may very well have hired the LeT or have had advance knowledge about the Mumbai attacks - only thing is once Kasab was caught, they had to defer the next phase of the project until the attacks were more distant in time.

Please help me understand. Why would Late Sri. Karakare call Digvijay Singh of all people?

In other words what is Digvijay Singh to Karkare that he would call and complain about the subject? What did he expect Digvijay Singh to do about it?

While at it, explain the police officer Gafoor's fears that he remained incommunicado while the terrorists were on a rampage.

Digvijay Singh may have been providing suggestive input to Karkare. As in preparing the ground so that police adopts the Hindutva terrorists theory once bodies of Hindu looking people (red threads around wrists) were found after the terror attack. And Karkare could have been set up by being told that he would be able to capture the terrorists easily. In this scenario, someone like Gafoor would come forward after Karkare was killed and connect the predetermined dots.

We should question the timing/circumstances than the chain of command. Most senior police officers right from SI maintain political connections to help them get out of trouble, plum postings, promotions etc. So DS might well have been a 'good friend' of Shri Karkare. Ofcourse, when a top-cop is about to go on a high stakes mission, why on earth would he call this 'mentor-friend' should be anybody's guess. For argument's sake let us assume that they did indeed talk, Karkare might have thought it is better to keep DS abreast with the unfolding situation so that he (DS) can brief 'dus janpath' and others.

RR Patil dumps Digvijay Singh's theory, says Hemant Karkare is a martyr
Published: Wednesday, Dec 15, 2010, 1:04 IST
By Shubhangi Khapre | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh may be hinting hard at slain anti-terrorism squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare’s troubles with right-wing fundamentalists, but nearly 24 hours before he fell to the bullets of 26/11 attackers, Karkare’s bigger worry was the game of one-upmanshipamong top police officials.

Home minister RR Patil, who met the ATS chief a day before his death, revealed this to DNA on Tuesday.

The state government has been steadfast in its assertion that Karkare led the force from the front and laid down his life fighting the terrorists.

Both Patil and chief minister Prithviraj Chavan have been dismissive about the suggestion that he was a victim of Hindu fundamentalists and intra-police rivalry.

Patil said the slain ATS chief rushed to the spot after hearing news of attack by terrorists. The images of Karkare wearing the bullet-proof jacket tell the story, he added. “I really feel bad about him. He was a wonderful officer and human being,” Patil said.

“When he met me he almost had tears in his eyes. He was not very happy as there were malicious campaigns against him, both within and outside,” said Patil, who resigned post-26/11 taking moral responsibility for the incident.

The home minister said Karkare was so unhappy with the goings on in the police department that he was willing to relinquish his post and take up some other responsibilities.

Patil said he did not disclose this earlier as it would have hit the morale of the police force.
It is no secret in the home department that the rivalry among top officials in the police has been intense. Karkare’s rivals in the police force — senior officers in the crime branch and the DGP’s office— were tapping his telephone conversations to keep track of the Malegaon bomb blasts investigation.

In one instance, the crime branch hired a private plane to interrogate a person detained along Gujarat’s border after coming to know that the ATS team had set off by road to meet him. The ATS team suffered humiliation when their counterparts in Gujarat informed them that a Mumbai team was already there and done the job.

Meanwhile, Digvijay’s remarks have not gone down well with the senior leaders of the party here. “I am really amused with Singh’s revelation. I wonder how many people Karkare called a day before he died. You don’t politicise somebody’s martyrdom,” said a cabinet minister.

A senior officer in the home ministry said, “There cannot be any scope for debate about Karkare fighting the Pakistani terrorists and laying down his life for the country… As far as the state is concerned, he is martyr.’’
