Why would BRF have this news linked on its home page?? Its clearly just mud-slinging and not written in good spirit.

Strange but When it happens it happens in 3.
Re: Military Flight Safety
The chopper which crashed was a Cheetah from army while Dhruv was from air force. One of the pilots in the recent Cheetah crash is from my native place. Sigh!

One of the first images from the crash site, posted by someone on FB. The airframe looks remarkably intact.

Re: Military Flight Safety
Kudos to the IAF pilots. From first look, it seems the pilots tried everything they could before ejecting. The body of the jet is more or less intact and also they crashed away from population.
Re: Military Flight Safety
Thank god the pilot's are safe. That plane is most probably salvage-able. It happens very rarely when the pilot(s) eject(s) but the plane lands itself. Example: Cornfield Bomber
But this picture is very interesting. It is almost looks like the pilot's stayed with the plane as long as possible. The tried everything: flaps are down, the air brake was deployed (and torn off), parachute's deployed. Tried to land on it's belly? Possible failure of left engine?

Yes seems like the pilots stayed with it to ensure a safety on ground.indranilroy wrote:Thank god the pilot's are safe. That plane is most probably salvage-able. It happens very rarely when the pilot(s) eject(s) but the plane lands itself. Example: Cornfield Bomber

Check the engine nozzles, seems like asymmetric thrust due to flameout?

IAF reviews its flight safety performance
Link: http://zeenews.india.com/news/india/iaf ... 87720.html
New Delhi: Highlighting the need for safe and result-oriented operations, top officials of the Indian Air Force on Monday reviewed the flight safety performance of the force with focus on handling airborne emergencies. Addressing the annual Aerospace Safety Council meeting held at Air Force Station in Palam here today, AOC-in-C Air Marshal SS Soman AVSM VM highlighted the need for continued prioritisation of safe and result oriented operations.
The Headquarters Western Air Command also took stock of its operational and flight safety performance. The IAF flies close to two and a half lakh hours per year of which Western Air Command share is more than 25 per cent, a statement issued here said.
The quorum comprised senior functionaries of the HQ WAC and field commanders of its airbases. DG (Inspection & Safety) Air Marshal S Neelakantan YSM VM reviewed the Flight Safety performance of the IAF with focus on situation handling and dealing with airborne emergencies. The incident and accident rate has been showing a steady decline in the last 10 years, however, a word of caution was sounded by SASO Air Marshal BS Dhanoa YSM VM so as "not to let the guard down".
Bird hits remains a cause of accidents and needs the effective participation of the district administration at most places, they said. The Airospace Safety conference comes close on the heels of the recently concluded Commanders conference of the IAF.

I pray that God grants peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved families to cope with this irreparable loss.Sources said that at around 7.20 p.m. the helicopter struck the mountains leading to fire. However, they said that actual cause of the crash will be found by the inquiry. Police is investigating the matter.
The pilot has been identified as Lt Colonel Gulathi and co-pilot as Major Tahir Khan. The helicopter belonging to 202 Squadron had taken off from a Dhru army aviation base at Mansbal and was on training sortie.
A Srinagar based army spokesman said that Army Aviation Helicopter crashed at Safapora Heights while it was on a night flying training sortie. “The helicopter had taken off at about 7 pm from Manasbal base and the contact was lost after 40 minutes of flying. Search and rescue mission revealed that two officers, both pilots, suffered fatal casualties in the accident”, he said.

IAF crash investigation report don't come online so we can only speculate , below are the two BSF Dhruv crash report prepared by DGCA
ACCIDENT TO BSF (AIR WING) DHRUV HELICOPTER VT-BSH
AT KUNTI VILLAGE, NEAR RANCHI ON 19th Oct 2011
Investigation revealed that the accident was caused due to loss of Situational
Awareness wherein the flight crew got spatially disorientated. As a result, the
helicopter went beyond the flight envelope exceeding its structural limits and thereby
leading to failure of the rotor system. The Pilot had inadvertently entered clouds
while executing a turn to return back to the base for a cautionary landing, due to ‘Tail
Gear Box Hot’ warning. The route weather was marginal. The contributory factors for
the accident were inadequacies in IF experience, training/ knowledge of aircraft
systems and failure of Cockpit Resource Management. ALH being a recent induction
in PHHL, crew’s experience on type was limited which hindered effective use of
onboard systems for a recovery. HAL’s product support to the aircraft operator and
monitoring its sub contractor activities were considered inadequate.
ACCIDENT TO BSF (AIR WING) DHRUV HELICOPTER VT-BSN
AT RAIPUR AIRPORTON 15th JAN 2012
Investigations revealed that the accident was caused due to loss of Situational
Awareness wherein the helicopter entered Vortex Ring during descent in OGE hover.
Excessive lowering of Collective Pitch had resulted in high rate of descent which led to
onset of the condition. The situation was not comprehended and the pilot raised
Collective lever to arrest the sink, without breaking the Vortex Ring state. This led to
intensification of vortices and thus increasing the rate of descent. The helicopter
continued to descend and impacted ground uncontrolled. Inadequate knowledge of
onboard systems and fixation to speculated failures were contributory factors.
Inadequacies in training, consolidation and Cockpit Resource Management were other
contributory factors. The Flight Crew had not undergone Simulator Training

Mi-17 in Arunachal in foggy weather
Another Mi-17 in Uttarakhand in foggy weather
A Jaguar on a training sortie during day light
the point is after platform Obsolescence and engine trouble causes, CFIT is the most causative

The design has done its job. It must have been subjected to its maximum force or more. The aircraft looks like slammed into the mountain at Mach 0.9.

Re: Military Flight Safety
Not sure you can call it "done its job". Crashworthiness score seems to be less than perfect here.
Sure, the storage didnt explode, but it doesnt seem to have had much of a safety margin left either. Recall that these are placed where such a flight into terrain would not cause them to be so badly mangled. The nose took the impact, not this part, and nothing says so far that it was at M0.9 (at least where I read) when it crashed either. It should have come out in a better shape than this.
