Government sources said the administration has held up Israel's request for the AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopter. The sources said the request was undergoing an interagency review to determine whether additional Longbow helicopters would threaten Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.

Russian arms exports to grow by up to $800 mln in 2009
Varlamov confirmed that the Chinese and the Indian share of Russian arms exports decreased to 16-18% last year and could dwindle even further. However, Russia is expanding its presence on other markets, including in the Middle East and in Latin America.
"We are increasing our arms exports by penetrating the markets of other countries," Varlamov said, adding that the U.S. remains Russia's key competitor in global arms sales.
In military-technical cooperation with India and China, Russia has shifted focus to joint development of weaponry and defense technologies, he said.
Russia and India, in particular, have developed the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, and agreed to jointly develop a medium-haul military transport plane and a fifth-generation fighter jet.

note the distinctive feature of GIGN forces, their heavy ballistic shield on their helmets. I think it can stop even a 9mm at close range. it gives unprecedented protection but its also heavy.
but heck if they can hold it why cant our boys.
also one of the operators is holding an unusual buttstock for MP5 (AK 47 style). they sure have wide variety of weapons/accessories to choose from.

But I think that we ought to review the pics of all major counter terror and Commando units the world over. The equipment they carry is for reasons of their operational doctrine and needs.
considering that our own special forces don't exactly lack funds, we need to see where we can upgrade / build commonality.

Saab says during a typical 4 vs 4 the team of SU-35's would beat team JSF 8 times out of 13.
Big reason being the number of missiles they can take to a fight.

IDF tells officers: Lose the PowerPoint presentations
The deputy chief of staff, Brig. Gen. Erez Weiner, wrote a damning indictment of such presentations in last month's issue of the IDF journal Maarachot. PowerPoint presentations, he wrote, represent "a strong point that has turned into a weak point. The Americans have concluded that using them makes discussions shallower and compromises analysis. The IDF remains addicted to this tool, and is paying for it dearly."
Weiner also quoted U.S. military scholar Col. Douglas Macgregor, who has published reports on senior defense figures discovering that the officers were simplifying complex ideas with "sound bites and amusing pictures." Since they were not forced to explain their positions over several written pages, the officers tended to resort to less coherent arguments.

Mi 24s role in eelam war IV emphasised
by Shamindra Ferdinando
The Hingurakgoda-based Mi 24 helicopter gunship squadron played a critical role in the recently concluded eelam war IV with nearly 400 missions in the Northern and Eastern theatres. Known as the No 09 squadron, it had caused devastating losses in coordinated attacks directed at fortified LTTE positions situated close to what Wing Commander Sampath Thuycontha, Commanding Officer of the squadron called forward location of own troops.’
In an interview with The Island, the veteran flyer said that despite having a range of weapons, including dedicated anti-aircraft guns the LTTE never succeeded in threatening their operations. "Of course, they hit our choppers on many occasions, maybe about 35 instances during the entire offensive. Some times, damaged choppers had to come down in areas where fighting was raging," he said, adding that their engineering section always responded swiftly and decisively to any emergency........

Dashed Hopes for Poland's Defence
It seems that Polish hopes have been dashed two-fold recently. During talks in Brussels, Polish Defence Minister Bogdan Klich was told that Poland will not receive MRAP-type vehicles, and while they will receive the promised Patriot missiles, the missiles will be unarmed.
Re: International Military Discussion
A very very interesting weapon concept indeed , that fact that Israel have developed this fives me hope that maybe we could acquire it and use it in forests of Kashmir to greatly reduce our soldiers casualties and even other marshy areas like NE and BD border. The Israeli military has reportedly designed a robotic snake which can spy on enemies and plant bombs.
A robotic snake
The robotic snake can even stand up vertically to peer over obstacles
The remote-controlled reptile is able to sneak through cracks in buildings to gather information on enemy combatants, according to Israel's Channel 2 TV.
It can even stretch its neck up vertically to peek over obstacles in its way.
Researchers studied the movements of snakes to ensure that the robotic equivalent mimics them correctly.
A soldier controls the snake from a remote laptop and can follow what it sees via video cameras.
Footage posted online shows the six-foot long snake in camouflage gear, winding its way through rocks and tree stumps.
The video is getting thousands of hits on YouTube after a user called "Korozzz" posted it.

A long time back I remember seeing some of the really gory pics of Russians in captivity getting buggered and tortured. At the time of those pics, US would gleefully point how the 'gallant' Afghans were giving it to the Russians and supporting the free world. Now that the US troops are the the receiving end, the same 'gallant' Afghans have now conveniently become terrorists! - you reap what you sow

Times they are a-changing: US Air Force training more drone operators than fighter or bomber pilots combined
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/06/16/ ... 245153649/
Highlights:
More troops will be trained as unmanned airplane operators than as fighter or bomber pilots combined, the U.S. Air Force said.
The Air Force said it will train 240 pilots to fly Predator and Reaper drones compared with 214 fighter and bomber pilots for fiscal year 2009 ending Sept. 30. Officials said there are 550 drone operators compared with 3,700 fighter and 900 bomber pilots.
"The capability provided by the unmanned aircraft is game-changing," Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz told USA Today. "We can have eyes 24/7 on our adversaries. The importance of that is clear in the feedback from the ground troops -- this is a capability they don't want to be without."
