Gunman, six others dead at Wisconsin Sikh temple
OAK CREEK, Wis. — At least seven people, including a gunman shot by a police officer, have been killed in an attack on worshippers at a Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on Sunday, police said. The officer was wounded but “returned fire, and that shooter was put down,” said Bradley Wentlandt, the police chief in nearby Greenfield, who briefed reporters. Investigators who picked through the building afterward found four bodies inside the temple and two other victims outside, plus the gunman, Wentlandt said.Though early reports had suggested there may have been more than one attacker, he said officers had not identified any other gunmenThe wounded officer, a 20-year veteran, was in surgery Sunday afternoon after being shot multiple times, but was expected to survive, Wentlandt said. He was sent to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, south of Milwaukee, after a 911 call about 10:25 a.m. (11:25 a.m. ET).Carolyn Bellin, a spokeswoman for Milwaukee’s Froedtert Hospital, said one of three men brought there from the incident was in surgery early Sunday morning, while another was in the surgical intensive care unit. The third was being evaluated in the emergency room. All three were in critical condition. The temple has a congregation of 250 to 400, according to its website.“I just want to say this temple was built a number of years ago and there have never been any problems with this temple,” Oak Creek Alderman Dan Jakubczyk said. “They’ve been a plus to this city and to my district.”

Amardeep Kaleka, a member of the temple whose mother and father were inside at the time of the shooting, told WISN that there were multiple shooters and it was a "well-coordinated" attack.

Police say they have done a few sweeps and think there was only 1 gunman but that things were still fluid. Early reports said that a gunman (or more) may have escaped. One person said the gunman/gunmen was/were "Caucasian". The cop who confronted and killed one gunman outside the Gurudwara received multiple gunshot wounds.

3 including cop critical in hospital with multiple wounds to face and extremities. People allowed to leave gurudwara now. Early reports said about 30 people were shot with "several bodies visible in the parking lot".

One of the terrorists is a caucasian male in his 30's.
The Gurudwara had a priest come specially from India for the occasion.
This same temple has been the target of hate crimes before.

CNN was still debating whether it was a terrorist attack or not. I guess it is terrorism only if a non-white is the perpetrator.

They have IDed the perp but the name is not going to be released by the TV channel until the police give the go ahead. Police in a neighborhood of Cudahy near Oak Creek - looks like the perp's home is there. Two blocks are cordoned off and people evacuated from one block. Holmes avenue is shut down.

Several police cars on Holmes Ave, Cudahy. There are FBI vehicles, and an armored vehicle and an ambulance on stand-by. This is supposed to be the house where the suspect lived. 3700 block on Holmes Ave. (?). The area has been evac'd 2 hours back. Some of the people around area have been told to stay indoors. Either they are looking for clues or there could be other people involved. Started around 4:25 PM.

Condolences to the families of the victims. was there any special occasion in the Gurdwara today? if so, the police should investigate the possibility of planning this massacre for a long time. usually, if attack happens on important occasions, it means he/she planned it out for a long time and chose the "right" timing to inflict maximum psychological trauma.

This is so sad for everyone. My condolences to all of the families affected by this terrible act of terrorism.

Since 9/11, too many people of Indian origin have been harassed, attacked and murdered. A general travel warning should be placed by the GoI for all Indians who travel to the US.

I shed a silent tear for the families affected. When someone across a border attacks you, it is terrorism. When someone whom you call your own attacks someone from across a border, it is a fight for freedom.

People with off-white skins and dark beards are killing Americans, and US patriots are fighting back to protect freedom.

Security checks are required for for multiplex movie theaters and some temples in India. A childhood friend of mine old who later became a relative by marriage had once mocked airline security in India by comparing with the ability to walk in freely in US airports in the 1990s.

But the US is a far safer place than India no? Lots of people who say they know India and America tell me that. I am sure statistics are available. Let me state one of the most sick jokes I have heard over the years. People keep theorizing that video games where players are required to shoot and kill are creating a mindset that finds the idea of mass killing attractive. What is so sick about this is that a lot of the cheering I hear about mass killing that comes from America is mass killing and America's power to kill its enemies en masse. Expressions like "rolling thunder" and "highway of death" where designated enemies of America have been exterminated in large numbers are cheered with the Star Spangled Banner or hard rock playing in the background. Youtube videos of machine gun fire, or even PGMs are shown taking out groups of men or vehicles are used as triumphant examples of what happens to you when you "mess with America". Mass killing is actually cheered and celebrated by the USA in the name of patriotism and freedom.

Massacring blacks in the US was well known just a few decades ago within the lifetime of my grandfather, and blacks are now a dhimmified group in the US. Here you have a case of plain racism that will be passed off as the act of a psychopath The word "psychopath" is the proto-Indo-Germanic word for "person with bad thoughts". One man will get arrested and it will be called "justice" A gun can never kill on its own. People kill people. So you must not eliminate guns. Eliminating people is sometimes required.

Firstly my condolences to the families who lost near and dear. The place of worship has been desecrated, innocents have lost precious life. Very sad and I at a loss to express my grief....

While all this was happening the lone brave police officer did his Dharma of protecting the innocents who sought help.

So there is still vestige of righteous, honor and duty bound who are even while losing the battle against the evil are standing up for a fight.

My prayers and thoughts extend to that law official family which lost its father, son, husband, brother

Actually I have lots of observations on the intense insensitivity that exists, but I will make them elsewhere in great detail. This incident just raked up thoughts that cannot be expressed in Twitter style one liners.

Guys, I am not in US at the moment, and so I won't be able to give you the subtle condescending, white-racism exonerating media coverage of this massacre, but someone already gave me a hint. By calling it "terrorism" instead what it is, a hate crime, there is a subtle attempt to make this out to be something alien, "oh someone de-ranged", "not one of us" kind of crap. I know how Sikhs and Muslims (and Hindus and Buddhists, notwithstanding US pomposity in embracing the Dalai Lama) are treated and the contempt with which religions other than Christianity and Judaisam are held at, but unlike the case where if such a massacre took place in India, you won't have "freedom house" or "human rights watch" issue religious freedom BS reports. To me, it does seem like some racist mistaking Sikhs for Muslims (not that killing of Muslims is justified) went on the rampage.

No No. I won't be writing about this particular incident and probably not even on BRF. The presence of good and bad individuals is well known to everyone without a cursory hypocritical nod at a man who did his duty. My interest is in cultural and social norms that are designated as good and bad in societies. Not even for BRF this time.
