NEW DELHI: In a huge turnaround, Bihar has emerged as the fastest growing state in the country with figure of 10.9 per cent, overtaking Gujarat whose growth has dipped.
According to the Planning Commission data, Bihar was the slowest growing state during 2001-05 period with GDP figure of 2.9 per cent. However, between 2006 and 2010, it grew at 10.9 per cent, becoming the fastest growing state and shedding the tag of BIMARU (an acronym for sick states).
On the other hand, Gujarat was the fastest growing state between 2001 and 2005 with figure of 11 per cent. But during 2006 and 2010, its growth dipped to 9.3 per cent and was overtaken by Bihar and four other states -- Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Maharashtra and Orissa.
I, guess more than Nitish factor MNREGA is at play here . Bihar also tops chart in MNREGA disbursals.
The Paid Media has begun to build up Nitish Kumar as a counter to Modi's PM ambitions. Nitiish's credibility is being built up for the top post. The argument would be: If economic development of Gujarat is the sole criteria for making Modi the PM, then hey, we have a perfectly secular Nitish who has been growing his state ever faster. Nitish is much better qualified than that communal Modi."
Bihars's SDP is 1/2 that of Gujarat on a good day. So if Bihar is 100 units, Gujarat is 200 units. At 10.9 Bihar adds, 10.9 units to itself annually. Meanwhile Gujarat adds 9.3x2 = 18.6 units to itself annually.
18.6/10.9, means that Gujarat is adding 70% more to itself annually. Bihar is actually falling behind.
Though the real elephant in the room is Maharashtra, its economy is 200% of GJ & TN. And it is growing just as strong as these two. So in effect it is adding 100% more to its economy than GJ & TN. In effect TN & GJ are falling behind MH and have been for some time.
