Why was there a Genocide In Northern India?

Hello, I am a student in Australia, I was wondering why there was a genocide in northern India after partition. What caused it? Where was it taking place (specific locations) ? Who was involved in the genocide? What was learnt from the genocide?

I know why partition happened, I am only interested in the questions above.
If possible could you please include references with your answer.
