US prosecutors charge four more LeT men over 26/11
Four more Pakistani conspirators have been charged by US prosecutors with carrying out the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks on behalf of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In a second superseding indictment filed by the federal prosecutors before a court here yesterday, the four were identified as Sajid Mir, Mazhar Iqbal, Abu Qahafa and one by the name of 'Major Iqbal'. Besides, the indictment mentioned an unnamed individual "Lashkar Member D." All are residents of Pakistan.

The four men identified were previously mentioned but not named in the indictments that charged Pakistani-American David Coleman Headley and Pakistani-Canadian Tahawwur Rana in connection with the Mumbai attacks which killed 166 people, including six Americans.

Sajid Mir was associated with LeT and supervised others linked with the outfit.

As suggested by a guru earlier, only the half-brights analyze Af-Pak, Indo-Pak, Iraq scenarios.

The really intelligent ones do the US-China thing these days.

I have been thinking, that all the attempted terrorist attacks in the mainland the US, post 9/11, none have succeeded, what could be the possible reasons for that. Could it be that the attackers were incompetent, or, could it be that they knew exactly what they were interested in, and yet some how extremely unlucky. Or could it be that the attacks were designed to fail to begin with.

Of all the possibilities, I find the last one most troubling.

The blasts came just days after Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the army chief, claimed to have broken the back of militants in the country.

Nobody really retires from ISI. That's because no one really permanently joins the ISI. That's the very basis of operations for the ISI. Officers are deputed to ISI from the three military services and paramilitaries, while still earning majority of their keep from the original parent services. They serve a few years and then rejoin their original groups. Some stay on. Like Hamid Gul, for instance. But, they always remain beholden to the ISI for their careers elsewhere (in public life or in the forces). These "retirees" can be called in to serve ISI's interest at any time. There are no "retirees" from the service. Hence, that statement by Athar Abbas, although factual, is meant to deflect opinion and mislead the west.

Kayani did not lie. Karachi is not "the country". It's a city not under control of any authority. The country only includes land under control of the army. Like Pindi.

Personally I think, Najam Sethi has got a pretty good idea of how Pakistan works, and he manages to give a pretty honest commentary from his PoV.

He is calling the current impasse between USA and Pakistan sanjeeda - serious! So the Pakistanis too are reading the relationship to be in dire straits.

NS is generally spot on re pakistan's internal affairs. ISI+PA mishandled Davis case. Being swallowed by CIA they caught hold of it's tail, thought biting it would make CIA scream and they can escape the grip. But instead the snake is now biting harder.

interesting time ahead...

The big coincidence is that both facts were know by the west for four years, and nothing was done aboiut them.

pakistan india trade talk
While no major breakthrough seems likely, on the table would be an Indian offer to export electricity and possibly sell petroleum products to Pakistan, which is faced with an acute energy crisis, officials say.
again mention of electricity export!! whats going on??
Pakistani officials also question the utility of MFN status, given the balance of trade which remains heavily tilted in India’s favour, citing “non-trade barriers” such as quality standards and customs procedure against Pakistani exports.
Riding high on pakistan love GoI can waive quality standards for the pakistani products. Can't take anything for granted.

Only way India can help pakistan to grow economically is to export our best economist "MMS" to pakistan. MMS should become the finance minister of pakistan. Problems solved for everyone.

OT for this thread.
But the US is now going to deploy Armed Preadator and Reaper drones in Libya against the Government forces.

Now we will get to see how effective these really are in the face of actual gunfire. The libyans will surely have anti aircraft and manpad cover present, rudimentary but still present.

Interesting thought: What happens if the Libyans shoot down a drone? The abduls in Pakistan will go crazy that their army and fizzaiya couldn't shoot down even one drone, while the libyans have shot down dorne(s)

Military spokesman Maj-Gen Athar Abbas has hinted at involvement of retired ISI officials in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, but categorically denied any role of serving spies.

First I thought they were suicide bombers and so only one dead meant a hit wicket. Now it looks like it is a little more sophisticated and they used remote control bombs. So suicide bombers in short supply?

No, they are just getting smarter. Remember recently a captured suicide bomber claimed almost 1000 professionals are being trained in NWFP academy.

Pakistan's hypocrisy has run its course; it needs a new relationship with U.S.
In the short term, Islamabad and Washington need to negotiate a new counterterrorism relationship. The old strategy of ambiguous private compromise veiled by public dissembling has run its course. Pakistan's legitimate concerns should be weighed against the immediate threat to the American homeland and to U.S. forces in Afghanistan. This is a herculean task given the underlying strategic differences, but the alternative is likely to be much starker.

Stephen "Uneven" Cohen was the lightest of minds in the late 70s. along the way he morphed into a TSP loving-India hating pit bull. The worst thing is due to his heading a politicial studies dept in Uty of Illinois he managed to shape/guide quite a few 'experts' Indian origin and otherwise.

What else do people expect the ISI to do?

Their primary job is to keep the Pakistani Army in power, well funded, and above and out of reach of all power centers in pakistan.

Fixing politicians is an important part of that game. If there are politicians who will subvert any anti-army move from within parliament and from within the government, and will play the shadow games with other countries at the behest of the army, that is what the army wants.

So it traditionally picks up politicians who are weak - like Imran Khan today, like Nawaz Sharif a few decades ago. These political newbies don't even have politicial parties, have no philosophy in life except to be politically expedient to advance their own careers. The ISI sets these guys up, makes a party for them, gets them alliance partners from the established political parties, advises them, and then fixes elections for them.

For example, they are setting up Imran Khan these days. They are going to the extent that they are selecting his electoral candidates, getting a party ready for him. They've made a deal between Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf and the MQM, and one can see a huge amount of media space being given to Imran biradher these days.

The guy is at best a bumbling politician for godssake! And he is being set up to be PM of Pakistan.
:D

Expectedly all the netas and parties who are bereft of the ISI's grace are up in arms and cribbing like hell.

The rumor is Begum Zia persoanlly used to serve samosas fried by her dainty hands to Unven Cohen to win him over. (Narrated to his own student!)

It was that kind of fawning attention that buys them over. Back in US they have to make their own coffee and eat a week old donut!
