Hockey as well as cricket are angrez in origin. In fact, most ball sports as we know them today (including tennis, a bit of golf, rugby, etc.) have origins in Victorian Britain* or before that in what we vaguely call UK today. Even if the Scots, the Welsh, the Irish and the Anglo-Saxons will quibble over who had a bigger stake in its origin. Most of these games were played in India first in british cantonments. They were played solely by brit soldiers for their amusement and Indians just served as cooks, ballboys, menial laborers, etc. Not just India, most of the Commonwealth saw these games first played by soldiers and officers trying to have a "decent time" with booze, women and good food, trying to recreate UK like conditions amidst heathens and browns. That is how the claim goes, and there is little to quibble with these facts. Crikkit was not Indic in origin even if you may want to claim gilli danda as Indic.
The problem with hickey as well as most other sports (barring crikkit) is one of poor administrational ecosystem. If crikkit can make money in India, so can any other sport IF packaged and sold well. The fact that it is not is not crikkit's problem. Demonizing crikkit only kills the one thing that survives. More money needs to seep into hickey and a high fraction of that money needs to go to players. Even with crikkit, till the late 80s, a good fraction of the money that BCCI made did not go to the players. It went to the Board under the tab of running the game. Only with the ad revenue in the early 90s because of the explosion of cable tv and a growing middle class did money started revolving around the 2nd rung players and backposting pension schemes started developing. Today hickey is where crikkit was in the 70s. Lack of attention, lack of money, poor administration which swallows every little thing that comes hickey's way, rank jealousy if players make more cash esp if that cash does not go through the IHF/HI route, etc. are all common ailments. This has nothing to do with regionalism, every region based administrator is purely selfish to the point of raping the system. Jyothikumaran was caught in a sting and that was just the surface. Batra is not agmark gold. Nor is Vidya Stokes. Most of the administrators in Indian sports today are there in it for ego reasons, not even to make big money and run off with that. If crikkit is left to industrialists, they take it the capitalist way. But then, you will see IPL related injuries. What we need badly (to start with) is that capitalist/entrepreneurial mindset in hickey administration. Sourly, that is missing.
Ajay Maken, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, tried to bulldoze a bill that will remove all these vainglorious politicians from admin posts and make them run their constituencies. Sadly, that bill did nt even pass on for a vote. It was knocked out by all the stars who actually run the show today. I have no idea why Farooq Abdullah is so keen on some sports, nor any clue why Arun Shourie or Jitin Prasada are keen on some. Except for some gymkhanas they dont even have a clue about these sports. But they do run the game. The case of Suresh Kalmadi is just one extreme in this. We have one Prof. VK Malhotra, who used to run much of the IOA show in the interrugnum period. He has a Phd on Sohan Lal Dwivedi, but no Prof. (
http://vkmalhotra.in/). Across partylines, we have such people. You cant bulldoze no changes with such people who have a vested interest in protecting their silly turfs and their giant egos. Aka, cant do much else for now.
Regarding Punjab in hickey, people have been having grouse on this matter for god knows how long. My grandfather used to have some grouse on this from what I hear, and having seen a bit of the stuff written in Campus and Pastime (a Madras based "glitzy" sportsy publication pre-dating Sportstar in the 50s-60s), the old Madras Province based players were all helpless on the selection policies of the then team. In fact, in the first 2 OGs, 28 Amsterdam and 32 LA games, the OG bound team was picked just a few days before the event. You can see the team stacked with way too many Anglo Indians (80% of em). There was hardly any space for Punjabis even if Pakjab was prominent in team selection matters. Dhyan Chand was just a rare Hindoo exception. The team was led till the infamous final by Marang Gomke, Jaipal Singh Munda from JHK and then by an Anglo in the final of course. Hickey through 47 was primarily a "minority" sport with too many Anglos, Muslims and Sikhs flocking the game. There was a reason why it became a symbol of "secular" India and not crikkit, which came to be called a Brahminical game (no kidding!). Plus, the pre-47 standing up to the brits sentiment, the jump in joy when the Oceanliners hit Mumbai port and the keenness with which the game was followed by leaders. Crikkit was still glitzy, CK Nayudu did nt make waves for a while, Lalaji did nt score that 100 till a while, and 1952 had nt arrived. With the predominant Muslim contingent opting for pakistan and the Anglos leaving for greener pastures to Scotland or Oz, the Sikhs came to rule the roost and started throwing in random players who excelled in Punjab leagues. The height was in the 60s when 8 or so players for the OG bound team were from Punjab. We have had a 108 Balbir Singhs in our history. No kidding.
What we see now is a democratization of hickey, with multiple centers coming to the fore. Sundergarh has had only one or 2 players except for now. Coorgis too have been left out. You hardly see anyone from the Munda (JHK/Orissa/CTG) belt even if it is a clear hickey stronghold regionally. Panposh Academy used to be big news locally a lot earlier before it started sending teams to national level events. And 90% of em still play with locally made crappy sticks that are bad for trapping and will lead to ball rising and hitting the eyes or worse. Soon, we will see someone from Panposh making it to the Nat team. In fact, we have a Manipuri in the 50 club even if he plays for Mumbai clubs. It may be hard to see this democratization in slow mo, but that is clearly what is happening. Punjab is not as dominating as before, but we do see some shittiness once a while. In the under-18 Asia Cup conducted in 2008 or 9, a big Punjabi junior contingent went in. Badly cooked up birth certificates too. They got whipped by the pakis in the semis. So much for an exposure trip. Most people like Arumugam of s2h have been blatantly pissed by such a hijacking. You can see his whines sometimes on this matter.
* Dont ask the idiotic chinis though, they will claim they invented the moon and then put a ring around it. These uncivilized neanderthals had been drawing a picture of a man on a stick till that picture became another weirdo picture that they use today as chini script. Anyway, I digress.
