In chess, I am wondering as to why Indian men GMs (barring Vishy) and women dont get to play often in the 27+ rated tournaments. There was a time when Vishy was plugging in Sasikiran and then Hari, and with Ganguly being his second, him for a while. But these days, I hardly see any of these people taking part in oiropean events as much as other people do. Even in the women, I see so much exposure that the east oiropean damsels get. I see Harika once awhile, but below that it is so irritating. How do you improve your ELO rating without playing more, which is the standard strategy of the chinis and the oiropeans?

Pillai also hit out at his one-time India teammate Pargat for having taken up a senior role in HI, which he said, was the brainchild of former Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi - the man whom the former skipper had despised earlier. "The same Pargat Singh had called Kalmadi a mafia. He took up the job in HI which has been foisted by Kalmadi once the carrot of a position was dangled in front of him," said Pillai. Pillai said he would go all out in support of WSH as "it's a very good thing for all Indian players". "I am going to sign with them," he added.

American football enters India via EFLI
There is a rush among sporting bodies to follow the Indian Premier League (IPL) way to build their sport. The latest to follow this route is American football even as broadcaster Ten Sports has signed up a multi-year deal for telecast coverage so that the sport makes a mark in India.

The Elite Football League of India (EFLI) is making an entry with its first edition ready to kick off in November 2012 in Pune.

The franchise-based league will initially have eight teams - Mumbai Gladiators, Hyderabad Skykings, Goa Swarm, Pune Blacktigers, Kolkata Vipers, Delhi Defenders, Punjab Warriors and Bhubaneswar Warhawks.

The EFLI is working with the government so that a governing body for the game can be instituted along the shape of India's cricket board, the BCCI.

EFLI founder Sunday Zeller said, "The launch of EFLI in India is a momentous occasion for us and indeed for the game. American Football is an inherent part of the American way of life. With a history of over 100 years, the game has acquired cult status in US, which can be mapped alongside its history. India is known to assimilate cultures and that, coupled with the immense pool of talent it has, makes it an ideal choice for a concept like EFLI. We are certain that these factors will combine to make India a force to reckon with in this great game of American Football, apart from creating the most lucrative sports league in the country."

Teams will be sold through the auction route like the IPL. There will be 59 games including two play-off games to decide the top teams. EFLI CEO Richard Whelan said, "India is beyond doubt a great market for the sports and entertainment sectors. A concept like EFLI presents a huge opportunity and the perfect platform for brands to get visibility and reach out to their potential customers. We felt that India didn't have enough games or sport to watch on television and, thus, see a huge potential here. We are training coaches from athletics, volleyball and wrestling and hope to be ready for the first season in time."

The league plans to add eight more teams during the second year and four in each subsequent season until 2022. By then, the league would have 52 teams representing all Indian cities with a population in excess of 1 million. ELFI will share 15 per cent of its revenue with the Sports Authority of India.

The EFLI will invite 600 companies to attend an orientation program to discuss strategy for long-term business affiliation. The league hopes to attract not just corporate backing but also support from the army, city municipalities and political parties. The Super Bowl is the most watched sport on American television.

After 8 rounds, Girish Koushik, is sharing a thin lead with Hovhannisyan Robert. Adhiban and Vidit are trailing by 1 and 1.5 points respectively. I expect (wish) one of them to be in the top three. Nice if one of the wins :-)

In the Girls section, Padmini Rout is trailing by 1.5points at the 6th spot. There is another bunch of Indians from the 12th spot. 5 rounds more to go, I doubt India has any serious chance in the Girls section this area.

And in other sad news, India loses out to Russia now in hosting the 2012 FIDE tournament. There is some talk of the Indian bid being leaked. FIDE has offered Chennai the opportunity to host the event in 2013. What will amma do?

Report on the leak.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/spor ... 558823.cms
Curiously, Russia had put up a bid initially for the match and then revised it after sensing Chennai would better it in the last minute. This has come as a big surprise to the chess fraternity in general, especially as it came at 11.59 pm on July 31, one minute before the deadline. "This was a big setback to us," said Prabhakar. However, he refrained from commenting further on Fide's decision.

The Russkies updated their initial bid somehow figuring the Indian bid. And that plus, no Anand home adv meant it was some no name place funded by some russkie oligarch that gets the event. In some sense, anand has only had bad luck in big events in India, so this shall also pass... Next time Kirsan bhai is unwelcome in India. Hopefully, amma will divert it to hickey and fund a wsh team with that 20 cr booty from the taxpayer. Already we have a 300 cr booty paid for the assembly building.

Stan Sir, other Indian GMs excluding Vishy are always fluctuating between the 2685-2625 bracket. Yeah they do not get to play the big ticket events(2700+) because of their performances in the CAT.B events too.If you had seen last year in WIJK ANN ZEE , Sasikiran fared poorly in the B group. You need to take those chances as they come. The field is much more crowded at the top nowadays with at least 50 players on the 2700+ list. we can blame it on rating inflation and such but its the same for everybody. Both Sasi and Hari play in the European league every year and i remember Hari even as a part of the Baden-Baden team which Anand plays for in the German league.Somehow things have not worked out well. These days 2 bad results might cost you a tournament invitation as there is so much competition.

If India has its own chess league like Europe/China or Russia then we can really groom the talent and players will start getting noticed.

FIH sends message to govt: No Champions Trophy in India
Taking a hard stance over their repeated objections to power-sharing governance in Indian hockey, the International Hockey Federation (FIH), on Monday, stripped India of hosting the 2011 Champions Trophy, which it claimed is in contravention of their Charter. “We regret that we have to move the Champions Trophy from India,” FIH president Leandro Negre said in a statement. “It is difficult for the teams, the organisers and the fans. But we feel that this is the only way to maintain the integrity of our sport,” the statement added.

NEW DELHI: Indian hockey team overcame arch-rivals Pakistan to win the first edition of the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament on Sunday.

India, with a blend of experience and youth in the team, beat Pakistan 4-2 via penalty shootout in the summit clash.

India have surprised everybody in the tournament and in their last group tie came back from 0-2 to draw the match against Pakistan which catapulted them to the final.

Indian forwards performed well in the tournament and that was reflected in the +7 goal difference that the team enjoys in the league stage.

India's newly-appointed coach Michael Nobbs has tasted success in his first major assignment.

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh cools Indian Grand Prix doubts
McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has played down speculation the Indian Grand Prix could be boycotted because of wrangling over tax.

The 12 Formula 1 teams and drivers are concerned they will be hit with big tax bills at next month's race.

"The teams are concerned about the implications of withholding tax in India and being taxed locally," Whitmarsh told the BBC.

"But I don't believe [the race] is seriously under threat."

"I am sure this will be resolved," he added.

The sport's expansion into new territories can mean big business for both its participants and the host country but Whitmarsh says the team want guarantees that they will not fall foul of local tax legislation.

"You don't go somewhere if you're going to be penalised," added Whitmarsh, who is also the chairman of the F1 teams' association, Fota.

"This affects all the teams and the drivers that are going there and at the moment the teams are working together to resolve it.

"But we have been unable to thus far get assurances from the Indian tax authorities that this manner will be resolved in a satisfactory manner.

"There is a concern, we do need to get it resolved but I'm sure it will be resolved, so we shouldn't get too excited about it. It'll be fine."

The new coach must be doing something good!!! GO!!!
Pakistan's Dutch coach displays the great Pakistani quality of lacking sportsman spirit.

India beats Pakistan, takes trophy
The high-voltage summit clash was marred by Pakistan coach's unwarranted action of constantly abusing Indian players from the roof of the stadium. Whenever there was an infringement from the Indian side, he abused liberally. And whenever the umpires blew against India, he hollered ‘Thank You'.
Indian Express story
Abusive coach

The high-voltage clash was marred by Pakistan head coach Michel van den Huevel’s constant stream of abuses at the Indian players from the roof of the stadium, even leading to his eviction between the game. There were tense moments on the field as well, with regular skirmishes between the players. SV Sunil was the first to be shown the green card for a rough tackle, shortly before Pakistan equalled India on that front.

Asked if the ill-tempered happenings had any effect on his performance, Sreejesh claimed that it only helped raise their game. “See, in any case an India-Pakistan match is high on emotions. Especially playing in the final, it was always expected to be intense. But after things heated up in the match, it only worked to push us further. It started as a match and ended as one but it did turn into something like a mini-war and I am glad I was able to help the team come out victorious. It feels great,” Sreejesh said.

The pakis have shown selective angst against India in many matters. Notwithstanding this fact, something truly irksome and bothersome would be DDM's show here. For one, the head coach of the paki team is Michel van den Heuvel. Not some Michel Henricus Maria. In fact, MHM is a politician in Netherlands: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_van_Hulten

So every DDM is dropping off the same name and posting the same message. There is only one source given the lack of Indian media coverage in Ordos. In fact, there were no Indian mediapeople in Ordos. No one went, not even the Hindu stable sent Thyagarajan to Ordos on china bahadur expense account. In fact, there were no mediapeople from any country except the chinis who covered only the chini matches and ran off after carrying the wooden spoon, which in itself was only deserved cos they hosted the event. For the 6th team, there should have been noone. Just like the women's event should have been a 3 team contest. Sometimes when you contest an event, there should some parity between the teams. That means some dissing at CR Kumar and his wards, but eh they chose to dump MK Kaushik on some spurious charge. But that is another aside. Going on the aside trajectory, people who have been crowing about chini plogless should note that there were absolutely no takers for any matches. In fact, Mike Nobbs called Ordos a ghost city, not just him, the same caricature was used by many others too.

Back to the point, if every media source is splurging this roof top act, the source is HI. They are the only ones who have access to the team report from the manager/coach that gets faxed back right after the game. See, there are no gross anglais errors in contrast to those of the bygone era. You know who is writing most of the reports. Not like knowing anglais is a virtue, but lets try to piskanalyze stuff without getting chaddis in a twist. Hickey in India is giant politics.

The fact that Sardara Singh and Sandeep Singh got shoved out before the team departure is not forgotten. The fact that this is third repeat violation of the same crime is not forgotten. The fact that Pargat Singh has been batting below the waist is not forgotten. The fact that CT was taken away is not forgotten. The fact that CC was bestowed is not forgotten. The fact that Leandro Negre is here soon is not forgotten. The fact that the Hon'ble SC stopped payment of WC dues to HI is not forgotten. The fact that the passing the buck has gone on for so long that the Honble SC has to get involved is not forgotten. The fact that Indian wealth is piped off for personal grandiosement is not forgotten. The fact that the Indian mafia-giri only understand the danda that comes from the Judiciary is not forgotten. The fact that the lack of dues settlement was the main issue behind packing off CT even before Negre is due in India for talks with Ajay Maken is not forgotten. The fact that Ajay Maken's bill in the now-ended session in the Lower House got bulldozed by the same vested interests like "Prof." VK Malhotra and Sharad Pawar and Farooq Abdullah is not forgotten. The fact that these same vested interests were the close cabal of Suresh Kalmadi that was responsible for the CWG scandal is not forgotten. The fact that this is a bipartisan issue with everyone from INC to BJP to NC to this and that party is involved is not forgotten. The fact that the youngistan such as Jitin Prasada and Sachin Pilot are cahoots is not forgotten. The fact that the CVC's report on the CWG scandal indicts everyone in a bipartisan way is not forgotten. The fact that the PMO wanted some low-key announcement of this issue is not forgotten. The fact that India will be India is not forgotten. The fact that at the end of the day, it is all about money and prestige is not forgotten. The fact that the poor sods who won the ACT in Ordos will end up regretting the very fact that they won sooner than later when the next amnesia sets in the collective braintrust of this forum as well as India at large is certainly not forgotten. So overall... aar paar ki ladaai, bas ek aur safai. Cut and paste chini style.

PS: Ok, I take it back, his full name is Michel Henricus Maria van den Heuvel.
http://cwg2010.dawn.com/2010/10/hockey-squad.html
http://www.sports.gov.pk/Participation/ ... Games.html
The point remains that he has been known as van den Heuvel to anyone who has followed hickey reporting in Dawn, of which there are many Indians if one goes by the comments section to India's win report. If someone uses brochure to put his name, the attribution is to HI. In the main forum, its called brochuritis. Thats afflicting sports reporting in DDM. No pisking gisking, all that is for brf consumption onlee.

The last paragraph of the letter from FIH to HI, which read: “The other point upon which I am being pressed by my Executive Board is in relation to the amount of approximately US$500,000, which is owed to FIH, pursuant to contract for the men’s World Cup held in Delhi in March, 2010. The release of this money is apparently being refused by the Reserve Bank of India. It would help if a written explanation is provided as to the reasons why this money is being withheld together with the steps that the FIH is required to take in order that payment can be made. The money is clearly the property of the FIH”.

Sorry it was not the Honble SC, but the RBI in terms of $ exports abroad etc. issue. At the end of the day, this is just a money affair. Negre is in India in a cpl of days, and there will be some back-channel pissing contest on when the monetary settlement can be done. If Maken-ji can give a GoI guarantee that this matter will be settled in due course after the RBI takes its time, the CT will come back to India. Else no. So much for a banana republic that is FIH. Now, one should wonder, what is that 500K US$. That is a part of the sponsorship money from Hero Honda.

From what I understand, here is the adulterated sideshow with my own masala of what is going on:
1. Suresh Kalmadi and his IOA cut down IHF and created an ad hoc body called Hockey India to run the WC which was offered to India.
2. This new body re-negotiated a previous contract that IHF had signed with FIH in return for a higher price (KPS Gill claims 5cr INR above the one he negotiated).
3. At the 11th hour, Hero Honda was roped in to sponsor the event. Hero Honda had banked on India doing well. A clause in the agreement was that Hero Honda will continue to sponsor all hickey related events in India for 2 years or so. So the new found love for India in FIH.
4. With India doing badly and the bickering in HI vs IHF and the case going the legal way, Hero Honda saw no point in continuing with the losing end of the bargain.
5. It pulled out of supporting all subsequent tournaments incl CT and the World Club challenge. Instead it put in some money into WSH which was the brainchild of KPS Gill & co.
6. The RBI clause pulled both Hero Honda and FIH by surprise and the former is happy, the latter aint.
7. Negre is here in India to negotiate a deal with MSYA. So all the whine about lack of governance in Indian hockey is all a smokescreen. Indian sponsorship money is essentially running FIH today, even if India does nt get much in terms of where to get in terms of rules or regulations. The last WC before the 2010 version did nt bring much profit to FIH as the Indian one did.

Bottomline: So this is all a game. FIH wants India as much as India should ideally need FIH. FIH wants a sweeter deal than it gets, hence the bakwaas in terms of whines and all. Indian bumbling is actually preventing family silver from going out. As long as the team does badly, there is no cow to milk. So one would rather put the cash bonus on the team rather than run useless events like CT where we will end up 6th or worse. Winning the CC and qualifying for the OG does nt seem like a bad idea. But for that the FIH may partner with IOA and ban India from the OG qualifying which may even happen outside India. Ideally, it should nt as FIH would nt want to kill the goose that lays some squalid eggs once a while now.

Some more data-points:
WSH was planned long before HI came into the picture. After it had recognized HI, FIH went all the way and retroactively ensured that WSH will become a persona non grata in hickey matters.

In the meanwhile, HI and IHF went for each other's head with folks who were bickering in one tent getting divided vertically. Some (like ASK, Pargat, etc.) saw the writing on the wall with the FIH recognition and IOA backing of HI to come back into the fold as opposition camp instead of sitting as dissidents in the IHF camp. Pargat fights elections against Vidya (Stokes), MSYA uses a >70 y.o. clause to cause some shock and awe in the HI ruling group, Narinder Batra sues for peace, throws away Vidya and becomes de facto head, gives away some family silver to Pargat, Pargat gets khudkushi, goes after dissenting players as if he was discipline personified in his playing era.

I still remember in the aftermath of the major Azlan 90 win, Pargat and Jagdev Singh became major stars and P&SB started acting cocky on the field. They were openly spatting at everyone on the field incl fellow mates on the National team. BH has this to report:
In 1995, the final of the famous Aga Khan hockey tournament in Mumbai had to be abandoned after the rough tackling Jagdev Singh of Punjab Police broke the knee of Indian Airlines forward Shakeel Ahmad. Mumbai's sports loving crowd then spontaneously stormed onto the Bombay Gymkhana field, ready to thrash the Punjab Police players. Jagdev Singh, Pargat Singh and other stars ran for their lives into the dressing room. The final was abandoned, the sponsors turned away from the tournament and the prestigious Aga Khan tournament was held only one more time over the next decade! None of the Punjab Police players were penalised. Instead, the victim, Shakeel Ahmad, lost his place in the Indian team after the incident.
Not just P&SB, also Namdhari XI and Punjab Police have been the worst criminals on the field. Everyone from Kanwalpreet Singh to Gagan Ajit Singh to Jagdev to Manpreet, we have had extreme violence from some of the Punjabi players. May be the easy pardons from KPS Gill must have been responsible. There have been huge grouses in non-Punjabi people such as the Sundergarh camp of which the Tirkeys, the Lakras, the Xalxos etc., Coorgis, Camp TN of which Md. Riaz was a major star, Camp Army (folks such as Dhananjay Mahadik who never got a chance till it was all too late), Camp BSF, Air India and Indian Airlines with Dhanraj copping the blame almost often, Mukesh who stood alone in his own world, about the bad influence and punching above their weight from Camp Punjab.

Once Pargat said this:
Team coach Pargat Singh can’t answer that. ‘‘This is bad, I know, it’s not good for the game. But hockey is an aggressive game. Josh chahiye, par josh ke saath hosh bhi hona chahiye’’’, he says.
Pargat has been a great player, I loved Azlan win in the 90 and the Sydney 2000 run before the Poland hungama happened, but he has also been the worst person to enforce discipline on the field. So when he questions people such as Sardara and Sandeep, and throws them as if he has been spotless clean, it is all solpa complicated to accept as life and move on.

Xlating the Bard, Politics, thy name is hickey... No wonder our team is effed up.

Stan,

To me it looks like that Punjabi players are exploiting the hockey management in charge people for their narrow goals. How do you fix this so that Hockey is not hurt and best players are picked!! only way to do so is to popularize hockey and demonize cricket at the same time!! Hockey is our national sport Cricket belongs to Angrez!! then more Indians will play hockey and with more money there won't be any such petty "violence" issues.

Each of the winner of the first hockey Asian Champions trophy got Rs 25,000. That's roughly US $500.00.

Cricket which was created by Angrez is revived by "Dhimmi Desis" while sport which was invented by their own ancestors is put down by the same Dhimmis!! offering temples to their pseudo "Cricket" Gods. PATHETIC!!

Hockey as well as cricket are angrez in origin. In fact, most ball sports as we know them today (including tennis, a bit of golf, rugby, etc.) have origins in Victorian Britain* or before that in what we vaguely call UK today. Even if the Scots, the Welsh, the Irish and the Anglo-Saxons will quibble over who had a bigger stake in its origin. Most of these games were played in India first in british cantonments. They were played solely by brit soldiers for their amusement and Indians just served as cooks, ballboys, menial laborers, etc. Not just India, most of the Commonwealth saw these games first played by soldiers and officers trying to have a "decent time" with booze, women and good food, trying to recreate UK like conditions amidst heathens and browns. That is how the claim goes, and there is little to quibble with these facts. Crikkit was not Indic in origin even if you may want to claim gilli danda as Indic.

The problem with hickey as well as most other sports (barring crikkit) is one of poor administrational ecosystem. If crikkit can make money in India, so can any other sport IF packaged and sold well. The fact that it is not is not crikkit's problem. Demonizing crikkit only kills the one thing that survives. More money needs to seep into hickey and a high fraction of that money needs to go to players. Even with crikkit, till the late 80s, a good fraction of the money that BCCI made did not go to the players. It went to the Board under the tab of running the game. Only with the ad revenue in the early 90s because of the explosion of cable tv and a growing middle class did money started revolving around the 2nd rung players and backposting pension schemes started developing. Today hickey is where crikkit was in the 70s. Lack of attention, lack of money, poor administration which swallows every little thing that comes hickey's way, rank jealousy if players make more cash esp if that cash does not go through the IHF/HI route, etc. are all common ailments. This has nothing to do with regionalism, every region based administrator is purely selfish to the point of raping the system. Jyothikumaran was caught in a sting and that was just the surface. Batra is not agmark gold. Nor is Vidya Stokes. Most of the administrators in Indian sports today are there in it for ego reasons, not even to make big money and run off with that. If crikkit is left to industrialists, they take it the capitalist way. But then, you will see IPL related injuries. What we need badly (to start with) is that capitalist/entrepreneurial mindset in hickey administration. Sourly, that is missing.

Ajay Maken, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, tried to bulldoze a bill that will remove all these vainglorious politicians from admin posts and make them run their constituencies. Sadly, that bill did nt even pass on for a vote. It was knocked out by all the stars who actually run the show today. I have no idea why Farooq Abdullah is so keen on some sports, nor any clue why Arun Shourie or Jitin Prasada are keen on some. Except for some gymkhanas they dont even have a clue about these sports. But they do run the game. The case of Suresh Kalmadi is just one extreme in this. We have one Prof. VK Malhotra, who used to run much of the IOA show in the interrugnum period. He has a Phd on Sohan Lal Dwivedi, but no Prof. (http://vkmalhotra.in/). Across partylines, we have such people. You cant bulldoze no changes with such people who have a vested interest in protecting their silly turfs and their giant egos. Aka, cant do much else for now.

Regarding Punjab in hickey, people have been having grouse on this matter for god knows how long. My grandfather used to have some grouse on this from what I hear, and having seen a bit of the stuff written in Campus and Pastime (a Madras based "glitzy" sportsy publication pre-dating Sportstar in the 50s-60s), the old Madras Province based players were all helpless on the selection policies of the then team. In fact, in the first 2 OGs, 28 Amsterdam and 32 LA games, the OG bound team was picked just a few days before the event. You can see the team stacked with way too many Anglo Indians (80% of em). There was hardly any space for Punjabis even if Pakjab was prominent in team selection matters. Dhyan Chand was just a rare Hindoo exception. The team was led till the infamous final by Marang Gomke, Jaipal Singh Munda from JHK and then by an Anglo in the final of course. Hickey through 47 was primarily a "minority" sport with too many Anglos, Muslims and Sikhs flocking the game. There was a reason why it became a symbol of "secular" India and not crikkit, which came to be called a Brahminical game (no kidding!). Plus, the pre-47 standing up to the brits sentiment, the jump in joy when the Oceanliners hit Mumbai port and the keenness with which the game was followed by leaders. Crikkit was still glitzy, CK Nayudu did nt make waves for a while, Lalaji did nt score that 100 till a while, and 1952 had nt arrived. With the predominant Muslim contingent opting for pakistan and the Anglos leaving for greener pastures to Scotland or Oz, the Sikhs came to rule the roost and started throwing in random players who excelled in Punjab leagues. The height was in the 60s when 8 or so players for the OG bound team were from Punjab. We have had a 108 Balbir Singhs in our history. No kidding.

What we see now is a democratization of hickey, with multiple centers coming to the fore. Sundergarh has had only one or 2 players except for now. Coorgis too have been left out. You hardly see anyone from the Munda (JHK/Orissa/CTG) belt even if it is a clear hickey stronghold regionally. Panposh Academy used to be big news locally a lot earlier before it started sending teams to national level events. And 90% of em still play with locally made crappy sticks that are bad for trapping and will lead to ball rising and hitting the eyes or worse. Soon, we will see someone from Panposh making it to the Nat team. In fact, we have a Manipuri in the 50 club even if he plays for Mumbai clubs. It may be hard to see this democratization in slow mo, but that is clearly what is happening. Punjab is not as dominating as before, but we do see some shittiness once a while. In the under-18 Asia Cup conducted in 2008 or 9, a big Punjabi junior contingent went in. Badly cooked up birth certificates too. They got whipped by the pakis in the semis. So much for an exposure trip. Most people like Arumugam of s2h have been blatantly pissed by such a hijacking. You can see his whines sometimes on this matter.

* Dont ask the idiotic chinis though, they will claim they invented the moon and then put a ring around it. These uncivilized neanderthals had been drawing a picture of a man on a stick till that picture became another weirdo picture that they use today as chini script. Anyway, I digress.

This is the kind of pathetic face of Indian governance not to support India's national game - Hockey in this way. What else do you expect when everyone is busy in making money out of everything in the present government? There is no sense of nationalism!

Our hockey’s instant wonders – Aslam to Walmiki
http://stick2hockey.com/ViewArticle.asp ... leOID=8614

A wonder of talent spotted long ago by ever-green Merzban Patel ‘Bawa’. Walmiki was supposed to play in the last Junior World Cup. However, a selector from his city favoured another forward from the same city, Victo Singh. He lost out a great chance. He waited. Was in the Bangalore camp, won the heart of new coach Nobbs. Scored on his debut match itself. Not many noticed. Went on to score some more goals, not many considered them vital till in the final penalty shoot out, the youngster did his job of scoring perfectly.
Let me also remind the case of Diwakar Ram, who has been here and there, from his WC junior days. Sadly, the attention span of an Indian is measured in nano-seconds. And no, that is not a happy thing despite the khudkushi spirit induced by another Nano.
Due to terrorists fear, the 2007 CT was shifted from Pakistan. The FIH felt sad about it. It said that it won’t allow players of Pakistan to suffer on account of shifting; the country will be accommodated wherever the event would be shifted. It stood by it. 2007 CT was shifted to Malaysia. Ok. The six-nation event was enlarged to -- believe me, not a seven-nation one so as to accommodate the hosts Malaysia -- eight nation! England was brought in. It was a huge bonanza, advantage for England which was in the India’s group of OQ and thus got invaluable match exposure.

At the hospitality of an Asian nation, Malaysia, England was accommodated. India also made a bid for the 2007 CT, but lost out to Malaysia, simply because Malaysia was ready to dance to the tune of FIH for winning the bid. India stuck to seven-nation while Malaysia offered free cheque.

Why do I elaborate this? To bring home a valid point. Here lies the question: Where is the same logic which was used in 2007, now? CT is now shifted from India for whatever reason. Why do you allow a set of players (India) suffer for not fault of theirs. When 2007 event was shifted, the FIH elaborated the logic that Pakistan players should not be deprived of their right to play CT, their participation should be ensured. We appreciated the FIH’s logic. Why can’t the same logic be used now with respect to Indian players, who are facing OQ and are desperate to play CT? In 2007, the same FIH used a godsend opportunity – shifting CT from Pak – to accommodate England, besides Pak. Why do they not even talk about Indian players being deprived of their right now? Why not the HI, which sub-served the FIH interest, think on this line?

Sardara and Sandeep are back, with selection left to Mike Nobbs based on fitness, form, fit in the team etc. Another case of complicated politics in the back-alleys. HI at least did a decent thing and give them one last chance, yet again. Good job on that. Another good thing is both are vital cogs to be detrimental to India's chances of OG qualifying if absent. Sardara in fact makes the defence look as strong as it used to be. Not much needs to be said about Sandeep. Bad thing is the Rajpal-Sandeep dynamic in the wake of this official pardon. Will they step back and focus on the CC and the OG qualifier? Hard to tell. The whole team seems to be energized after Mike Nobbs. Is it a chimera, is it a real thing, will it last long enough, will it be half as decent as it should be? God knows.

The focus on Noorani's piece is primarily on BCCI, but I will ignore the sucker punch and go for the left upper hook on the idiocy of the whole show.
