Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.

Post by SwamyG »

They are testing each other, looking at the opponent's preparations, training, conditions ityadi. With computers and seconds behind them, it is a testing of the whole team plus reflexes and strength of mind now. They will plod and poke each other, happy with draws and suddenly one will win and the match will become interesting for "spectators" & additional pressure on the loser. 8 games with draws, adds different pressures on the players. And the experts predict, Anand will get tired earlier than Carlsen. So a win for Carlsen on the 9th or 10th will become almost deadly for Anand.

Last time too, we saw so many chess fans complaining how boring the WCs have become. The goal is not to play interesting and bloody games, the goal is to become the Champion. It is name and fame. The prize money difference is not that huge, even the loser takes in a handsome money.

Anand is always known for his abilities to play fast, even at that age. I like Anand even when he is curt and grim; on the other hand Carlsen appears to suffer from chronic constipation and phlegm. Oh well, he is the "sex symbol", model, role-model, motivator and the messiah for the Europeans/West. He is good to reach so far, but he can stuff himself with his attitude.

It is a marathon. And after all it is chess

anand kind of beat the guy, cause he had to pull back and play for draw, he had to apply "emergency brakes"

MC said to have capacity of not allowing simplification of position and going for win even in positions which offer no advantage. In the first he was in a condition to draw by repeating the moves or lose a Knight. By the way Bobby Fisher lost his first game against Boris Spassky. So MC is in a better condition on comparission.

The onus was on Anand to break the cycle. Carlsen had to protect the knight with Queen. Anand preferred a draw.

I call a win for Anand on the 2nd round (oh well I have two glasses of wine), and just now entered a chess pool betting $5 for an Anand win of the match.

In my experience every additional glass of wine makes you increase your bet by an order of magnitude, i.e. exponential growth.

IMO, Anand's move 7 (Bf5) as against expected Bg4, very crucial pawn exchange leading to strong knight attack were simply brilliant. MC's Bb2 followed by c4 were not the best moves I think and were capitalized by Anand. This is what we should keep expecting - MC's loose move will not go unpunished.
Oh BTW, it is clearly MC, the "challenger", who offered draw plying white and Anand agreed which is quite OK.

This wasn't a boring draw but an extremely dynamic draw with initiative shifting very early on. If anyone thinks this isn't a jolt for MC, they probably aren't very serious.

Very amateur observer here, this is what struck me. It wasn't boring at all. And some reports claimed Anand, since he was wary, settled for a draw

^^ Yeah true, that's why I was surprised at a few reports that claimed otherwise.
Seems like Anand is losing the edge in this one.

yup, as I expected.

@saravana, I think his Ne4 was a mistake. he should have gone for a slower but more secure development with Ne2. carlsen saw a chance to erode anand's advantage and jumped on it.

I thought Anand was upto something when he assembled both rooks in tandem with g pawn and finally putting that stuck Bishop to use but no...either he developed cold feet or was setting up for move repetition.

It was said that once Carlsen got the opening part right the rest would be a cruise for him given that he has the "superior" rating. In spite of a novelty today that surprised Anand (of course not with white, Carlsen) Anand was still able to dictate how the match would go just as in the first game.

One school of thought says, if Anand gets 4-5 draws in the first four games of the match, Carlsen will get even more fidgety and will be more motivated to do something to open up the match. Quick draws are good for Anand. He conserves the energy for the longer war.

Sat Nov 09 2013
Anand - Carlsen (0.5 - 0.5)
Round 02
Location: Chennai
Anand opening with e4 and MC defending with Caro Kahn.

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5 5. Ng3 Bg6 6. h4 h6 7. Nf3 e6 8. Ne5 Bh7 9. Bd3 Bxd3 10. Qxd3 Nd7 11. f4 Bb4+ 12. c3 Be7 13. Bd2 Ngf6 14. O-O-O O-O 15. Ne4 Nxe4 16. Qxe4 Nxe5 17. fxe5 Qd5 18. Qxd5 cxd5 19. h5 b5 20. Rh3 a5 21. Rf1 Rac8 22. Rg3 Kh7 23. Rgf3 Kg8 24. Rg3 Kh7 25. Rgf3 Kg8

Anand continues with his aggressive play keeping the initiative with him. His response on 5th move (Ng3) followed by h4 and Nf3 developing his pieces and pushing MC on defensive set the tone of the remaining game.

Overall this further solidifies Anand's confidence and should make MC very uncomfortable at what is being thrown at him.

Just started looking at the game but didn't think there was a single move/moment to cause the above concern.
Anand had space and development advantage. Perhaps a tempo ahead on either side of the pawn structure would have been huge but no way would result in a worrisome possibilities, IMO.

Based on what we have seen in the two games so far, the only thing Carlsen will need to worry Anand is a lot of pindi channa and f@rt the f away during the game.

One of the many advantages of hosting these highly visible tournaments. It inspires people.
Their mother, B. Tamilarasi, traveled with them 450 km (280 miles) from Madurai to Chennai, allowing them to miss school to watch the Anand-Carlsen matches and take part in chess games throughout the two-week event.

"When I watched the inaugural ceremony for the World Chess Championship, I dared to think that they too could eye the world championship crown some day," she said.

With India having overtaken France as the nation with the most players rated by the World Chess Federation, the country that invented the predecessor of the strategic game is finally proving to be a hotbed of chess talent.

The enthusiasm for chess ignited by Anand in the 1980s is now a fervor as India hosts the world championship this year.

frankly, the amount of trash talk and abuse that anand is getting in chess forums is astounding. the way nearly everyone is assuming he will simply roll over in front of carlsen is blood boiling. right now I'm hoping he crushes carlsen mercilessly.
