Military Flight Safety
Re: Military Flight Safety
FL is not the same as ft. FL250 is 25000 ft as measured by a altimeter calibrated to standard atm pressure (1013.25 hPa) at sea level. In this case if the engine caught fire seconds after takeoff that would have happened at 250 ft not FL250. The report is correct.

https://twitter.com/Defence_XP/status/1 ... 59841?s=20 ---> IAF Dornier Do-228 aircraft during take off at Palam airport experienced a tyre deflation. The captain of the aircraft took prompt and correct actions of aborting the take off. Crew on board are safe. Some damage to aircraft, towed off runway.

Mug 29 is one of the safest aircraft in IAF. Last few days slew of bad news all around - 4/5 gas leaks, mi 17 (which is also one of the safest helicopter), mig 29, railway disaster, before that Halwara encounter....

A look at BRFs Aircraft archives does suggest that Mig 29 seems safe.
Mig 29: (18 crashes of 70 inducted)
Jaguar: (56 of 165 inducted)
Mirage: (12 of 60 inducted)
While crashes are a natural phenomenon in all Air Force's which flog men and equipment hard, the following observations are:
Mirage , though single engined, seems to have least attrition of 20%, and surprisingly Mig 29 is better than Jaguar, though both are twin engined.
So , while aero manufacturing/ engineering, make the sub systems more redundant and Mirage like, modular in nature, self diagnostic, and reliable as hell, have good technicians at hand for MRO, and good quality supply chain from reputed suppliers.

I mig29 crashes did you include navy’s crashes? If yes then include Navy’s numbers as well.

Jags quite often have low -low flight profile. Crashes would be higher for them.dinesh_kimar wrote:fanne wrote:Mug 29 is one of the safest aircraft in IA..

Re: Military Flight Safety
Is there a breakup (Engine failure, Pilot error, Bird hit,.. ) available? That would give a clearer picture

Just a few days ago a naval officer on leave had lost his life in a parasailing accident on a Karnataka beach IIRC. He was with his wife and child at the time. He got caught in the harness and died due to his lungs filled with water and delay in ambulance services.

Did Dassault ever get to root cause for the FC that led to M2K upgrade crash?
The COI concluded erroneous signals from FC which was still Dassault OEM caused the crash.

Praying that the missing pilot if found alive by rescuers or fishermen floating on some debris. Any learnings / usual suspects from past Mig29K crashes?

By 'recovered' they mean recovered safe and sound( at least relatively anyway) Not recovered as in body recovered one hopes. The imprecision is very annoying.

Re: Military Flight Safety
Not a happy event, second trainer loss.Inquiry must find outthe cause.
Dhruvs can certainly operate from the helidecks.I can't remember the 2 designs for the ( Inshore) Shallow Water ASW corvettes ,but if there is a helideck as in the K-class corvettes, the Dhruvs could also operate from their decks. It appears that perfection for easy hangar ops is pending.Nevertheless, the fact that 30+ have been ordered is a v.good reflection of the confidence of the IN and CG in the helos capabilities. With this order, another push for sale/ lease of these Dhruvs could be made in the export market.

Re: Military Flight Safety
Unable to trace the pilot and earlier 2016 Avro loss with no trace; does this signify a hole in our SAR capabilities?
If one pilot was found, then how far away can the other ejected pilot travel from the crash location?

Re: Military Flight Safety
I was hoping the same, that the second pilot would be within a few kms of the first. But as time passes, ocean currents can displace a floating mass quite a distance in a day. Its been several days now
Do Navy pilots carry a radio locator beacon on them for getting located in such ejection on sea situations?
